By the late 90s DV cameras and computers with firewire connections made all of this obsolete. Which happened at the same time I became an adult and got a decent enough paying job where I could afford a new DV camera and a computer. So I guess I lucked out. A few years prior and I probably would have invested too much in analog gear. At the same time, I also kind of miss all this stuff and kinda wish I had gotten the chance to use it. But that's just nostalgia kicking in.

Streaming is still big but streaming is replacing CDs for listening on the go and is consumed completely differently from vinyl and cassette tapes. Cassette tapes are also making a come back.

We had professional-level cameras on rolling tripods, a video toaster, and a random-assemble edit system (I think a Panasonic AG-1950 commercial-level VCR with remote) where you programmed the start and stop points, then told it to go and the system controlled the source and target VCRs in real-time to create the final edit.
Ooh what is a Video Toaster.... hehe sounds coolio imho... sounds imho like a person that toasts to the work done by the production crew... as in rasies a toast... I faintly btw recall iirc vaguely maybe having heard that phrase once or twide in digital film class back in iirc 11th grade or 2018-19...,ostly because of me being intentionally secretly imho asking over na over about retro consumer types kf tech liks vhs/dvd based camcorders vs a then seemingly boring and alsl torment of a small af camcorder what kind of human hating monster makes camcorder this small I thought...and a,so my hand gurdle is not working for shrinking my hand to fit the cam better.* eg the faux leather strap for holding said cam in jindsight even though I pretended to myself not to know it was not a gurdle lol. But. This is not just a lookback on how vcr videos are edited, but also gave the simplest explanation of the fundamentals of video editing regardless of the medium used especially on the part where they tackle continuity and proper usage of text and graphics. A lot of young video editors today (2023 as of writing) could learn from this.

I used to love picking up Videomaker Magazine whenever that was on sale at a local convenience store I went to. You should review the Videonics line of equipment if you ever find them. A high school "Media Arts" teacher just gave me his old MX-1 unit!

30:10 This is known and practiced even today. Audio is more important than video as far as quality is concerned. You can make mistakes on your set or in your video editing and as long as a solid sound track is there, the audience typically won't notice or care
I remember back in the day family members would record a TV show they had the vcr set and TV volume loud so the vcr would 'record' everything. I laugh now because it has nothing to do with either. You just have to make sure the vcr is getting the signal. Test it and you can turn the TV off. It's only purpose is the output no bearing on recording.
Now try EDITEC or EECO paired up with 3x 2-inch VR2000s, and an HS100 disk. Put a an old analog mixer in the middle... Add some extra TR-70Cs to keep the boys in ‘blue’ happy. ... or CMX340 plus any variety of A,B,C or D2 machines and a digital desk... All that just for video, audio is on a different room or place ! D1 was a transient phase, we can leave that out! There was a lot more - as you can guess... around 1000+ switches/pots and 2000+ indicators!
I'm still living this analog nightmare. I got lots of SVHS tapes, mostly nonsense, but some funny stuff and I can't get it into my computer. Aaaaaaaaaah! I bought all this analog equipment in the mid '90's, when digital was first coming out, but there were lots of different formats, so I decided to hold off on buying ........ anything. I used to go to marketing seminars that were pitching digital editing hardware and at the time you needed a giant computer and external hard drives that could hold, wait for it (I mean, Really, wait for it) 8 Whole minutes of video. Not only that, to load those 8 Whole minutes it took 8 Whole minutes to load it, which was pitched as 'real time.' To which I said, "Real time? That's kinda slow." Which brought forth a giant wave of laughter from the rest of the attendees. That was the beginning of digital editing, which I decided to wait for technical advances.
This video is going to give me nightmares. It brings back memories of what a hellish mess video used to be in the analog days. I got so frustrated with it that I abandoned it until digital became well established. In fact I had some of the equipment in the video. A lot of money spent and still absolutely abysmal quality in the final product. Good riddance to all that. Thank goodness that it’s ancient history.

Anyone considered taking a PC that has 2x AMD PHENOM II X6 processors without UEFI and install BeOS 5.0 Professional and UltraDV plus the ATI AIO Wonder card and have done with it as BeOS can handle large media files from 600GB and larger would that not be better and you know what it won't crash ever.

@@TheNiceJackass The D type computer connectors were only ever used for connecting computer peripherals, but they were out a long time before SCARTs were ever invented. They could have been used for audio and video but never were for some reason, even though they were a standard connector used world wide.
@@7rorre I guess the main advantages to SCART is they were very durable and easy to plugin. Euro TVs back then usually had multiple SCART sockets to connect all your devices much like HDMI today. I have heard that some really expensive TVs of the late 90s/ early 2000s were able to send 1080i over SCART.

As a European I find it really strange how SCART never took off in north America dispite it being superior to any other connector at the time.
I never understood why SCART was invented when we already had 9 way and 25 way D type connectors for computers.
