  • Sid & Judy (2019): Sid & Judy tells the story of Judy Garland’s phoenix-like rise from the ashes to the absolute heights of fame driven by her great and turbulent love affair with Sid Luft, her third husband, who managed her through triumphant highs and crushing lows, during the course of their 13-year marriage. It is the story of how The Star became The Legend.
    Based in-part on Sid Luft’s recently published memoir and a wealth of never-before-seen (or heard) personal archive, the film puts the viewer inside Sid and Judy’s intimate world.
    It is a privileged view inside the lives of one of our greatest icons of the stage and screen, full of all of her passion and wit, her madness and her magnificence - and lots and lots of her songs.
    It is a new look at Judy for a new generation, and a celebration of Judy for those who still remember, cherish, and love her.

    Proof that Judy Garland was not tragic. She was a gregarious, happy, silly, resilient, and witty person

She was so beautiful and she had light that she loved, her smile gives me thousands of years of life, so much fun. Holiwood destroyed a great artist and woman who is no longer in this world. Wow, is that Judy's mother Ethel with at 2:01? They look affectionate, which differs drastically from her image as the world's worst stage mother.

    • @jonathankieranwriter
      @jonathankieranwriter 2 месяца назад

      @slygreen6227 … Noticed that. Genuine affection from both. I’m sure Judy’s relationship with her mother had its happy moments as well as its complicated private ones. Surely she must have tried to keep things pleasant with her mother when she could, but people have many sides in daily life, and the sense of betrayal Judy felt from her mother somehow overwhelmed everything else in the end. It is my understanding that the mother frittered away a LOT of Judy’s MGM earnings on harebrained investments, and Garland’s earnings were enormous after 1939. Garland trusted her. Then Sid Luft gambled millions of her earnings on horses. Then her trusted agents during her great Vegas, TV, stadium concerts, Capitol Records years stole from her. She was richer than Bob Hope and Perry Como and anyone, but did not keep an eye on her immense earnings. But that was typical of the day-let the men handle “all that.” Happened to Doris Day and Debbie Reynolds and other big names, too. But Garland was not as resilient as they were when it came to such personal betrayals.

  • @normadesmond6017
    @normadesmond6017 2 года назад

    maybe, when you look back at all the men she married, this was the best one. But then again they all used her to get the last dime out of her. She would have made hunderds of millions had she lived today.

    that instrumental music is horrible. for someone who was so musical as Judy, couldn't the morons that be choose something more Garland like and pleasant to the ear. It is very interesting that this doc tells of Judy's rise from the ashes when this bonus, when this bonus footage as beautiful as it is (and I do love everything about Judy) appears to be her and Liza in the late 1940s. Which was thrilling to watch, but was before her time with Sid. Judy looked stunning in this turbin, and MGM slim, and not her fuller self when she met Sid

      Judy was a mainstream superstar, beloved by people around the world, from all walks of life, for the greater part of her career, but like most larger-than-life performers, she did have a loyal cadre of gay fans, in or out of the closet in the old days. When mainstream audiences looked away in horror as she was obviously dying before the world’s eyes in her final years, the gay audience was (for the most part) the demographic that remained fiercely loyal to her, and did much to preserve her legacy.
      But the entire paradigm has shifted today. With the release of all of Garland’s movies on disc/streaming, the continued popularity of classics like Oz, Easter Parade, A Star is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis, etc., her performances on RUclips, books, bio-films, she has been restored to a more mainstream appreciation where she belongs. Her body of work is the focus once again.
      Surprisingly, many in the gay community seem to sniff at Garland these days because some feel that liking her somehow stigmatizes them (whereas being wild about Britney Spears and Madonna and Gaga does *not* carry a stigma? 🤔)
      Things come full circle. Garland was always a major entertainer for all audiences and her legacy has returned to those parameters. But there’s no question she was bled dry by a troubled stage-mother, a greedy studio, some questionable husbands and managers, and her own resulting insecurities/troubles. Still, she lives-on brilliantly via a staggering body of broad and classic accomplishments in virtually all media.
      Work was just about all she knew, from the time she could warble as a toddler.
