I stopped going to a garage when there is nothing obviously wrong with my car. One time I thought I had scored a great deal on a Volvo XC70. Bought it for 3k. All was working well. I thought I'd just get a quick check at a Volvo dealer. They came up with something like 7k in repairs. I ran away all desperate thinking my car was a wreck. But than a friend of mine said: What are you winding about. Everything works. Just drive it and enjoy. I had the car for 2 more years without spending a dollar on it and than sold it for 3k 😂
Eh while this would work for a 3K beater, I wouldn't recommend this strategy in the long run for most cars. Yes it'll run but cars need preventative maintenance and regular fixes. You can drive on leaking struts but is it safe? You can ignore motor mounts but at one point, you'll start damaging things. That $7K repair bill probably recommended replacement of a lot of parts that needed replacement from a while ago.
@@donmynack Is this what is call sh1t posting? Making yourself out to be an idiot like this? Please explain what failure goes on between your two rude brain cells that you think this is appropriate.
7k is no wreck, go through the list and be selective. I used to have a very tuned and modded VW new beetle, I'd have her checked every 6mo-1yr and just take care of the small stuff before it becomes bigger, bill was rarely over 1k$ including filters, flushes etc. Consider it was a heavily modded and tuned car, driven hard at times, but I always took care of stuff in time and kept on top of it, thus avoidin bigger hits. Biggest was 3k or so, motor mounts, all belts, hoses, fluids, plugs and complete checkup.
Nah, when that old timing belt lets go and totals your engine, you won't be driving and enjoying it. A friend with a garage always talks about the players who come in with their "great deal" BMW or Mercedes, and can't believe the cars show out with $7-10K in deferred maintenance items. Why was it so cheap?
Good to see them using the guide pin when removing and replacing the wheel. Too many mechanics think they don't need it..and then wonder why the threads get messed up and the calipers get scratched.

Apropos those rods, it looks to me like McClaren has people who don't know how to use finite element analysis (properly). One has no business designing an engine if one does not know how to do FEA properly.
Glad your able to post a video midweek. Hopefully you can keep doing it! Alex your amazing fuel door switch that cheap! What a mark up! The interior looks incredible! She’s a beauty!
I would definitely get them to tune it. You have no idea who tuned it or if the engine can handle what they flashed to the car. You don’t want you engine to be added to the destroyed parts table.

@@longsleevethong1457 Having a Nissan LeMans racing engine( even though it was designed by TWR, a British Racing Team) can't be a Bad thing, just change them Rods when you want more Power😅
one of the reasons for the longer change interval is because of synthetic oil. We are told it is supposed to protect better, thus the need to change as early isn't needed. I have been doing 10k change intervals for YEARS, and have never had an issue.
Awesome video. Not a huge fan of McLarens but still very informative and entertaining. Ivan did excellent on camera. I'm very picky and I wouldn't mind him working on my stuff (though I don't own a supercar lol).
You're slowly starting to become my favorite RUclips channel again. It's between you and Cleet now. My son (almost 2) loves anything to do with cars and same here!
Alex this was a Great video! Can’t wait to watch you change the water-pump. You need to take her on some really twisty country roads to appreciate her!
I would definitely look into the oil change interval thing. Mobile 1 claims the filters can almost go about 20,000 miles and the oil easily 10,000 miles. As long as there is no contaminants or it breaking down like natural oil does it should be fine. Older non-synthetic oil degrades under heat where the synthetic doesn’t so you would have to change it every 3000 miles. I tend to change it at about 8K miles instead of 10k just because, but would love to see what Amsoil says about it.
3000 miles, no more no less as the only people telling you otherwise want you to buy a new car or lease a new one every 3 to 5 years, and oil and filters are less than the cost of a new engine, plus also when the engine starts let it do its start up procedure where it automatically revs high for about a minute or two and then drops down to get the oil to the bearings, then drive off which will probably do more to save the engine in general than anything else.
5k mile OCIs on any engine w/DI. DI tends to cause fuel dilution of the oil - I have seen in many UOAs across different engines, and it's just not worth pushing the oil life in these low bearing clearance engines when the oil is dropping a viscosity grade due to fuel dilution.
These other guys obviously are not mechanics. The oil and additive packages as well as filters being much improved does make 10k no problem. If you change it every 3k not only is it a PITA but your creating 3 times the waste oil and dirty filters and also means 3 times the production needed. The 3000 started when quaker state sold a non-detergent oil that almost ruined them. remember the "Quaker State Motor" comments and the sludged up engines that resulted?Save your money and the environment and your time. 10k hurts nothing!
Oil change intervals got longer mostly cause the oil got a lot better. Its 10,000 miles with an oil and filter capable of lasting that long, not cheap conventional oil.
Love all this new content, and the McLaren build. You're one of the RUclipsrs who inspired me to grab one of my childhood cars for cheap and start fixing it myself. I'm restoring and hopefully improving an old MR2 Spyder I got for a few grand last fall. So far, everything has been done by me in my home garage. I might have to get someone to weld the custom exhaust, but that's about it. I don't have a welder but it was tempting to buy one and give it a go, but don't have a pipe bender either. Hope to see more of the Eclipse as well! F&F came out during my college years!
New to your channel, but I can see without a doubt that you are the perfect owner for this car. I look foreward to seeing your confidence build in this beauty becoming your everyday driver in future videos. Enjoy!
really good video. Cant wait to see the next one. I know what is going on with the tune, the torque map is incorrectly setup and you are seeing torque intervention. A proper tune and I am telling you the car will make much better power, probably in the region of 650 wheel. I have just finished tuning my 12c myself and its epic.
So STOKED for a midweek McLaren Video!!! Nice 👍🏻 so glad water pump is all for now can’t wait to see it tuned and running smoothly (and safely) on the dyno!
I was wondering what was happening with the race car. Now I think they are designed with job security for all McClaren employees in mind. It was funny when you said you have a repair shop just a half hour from home, and the shop owner says, "Its fate." At least the mystery of after market products has been solved.
Buddy of mine worked for Nissan Engineering. Told me they did oil tests to see how long they could get out of an oil change without any change in protection. 10K no problem. They went up to 15K and oil was just starting to show some downward trends.

You need to explain how you figured out the fuel door part was a clone of cabinet hardware. It’s easy to figure out replacement spark plugs, plug packs, etc, but how did you figure out the fuel door?
If you are missing the catalytic converter(s), you could have a lawsuit against whoever sold you the vehicle. Also, whoever removed them could be subject to a criminal action.

Obviously Peter is out of a job. Maybe you could start your own channel and give him a job. Maybe Alex will bring him back, but that won't be any time soon. So it does'nt help to chirp in the comments about it either, what ever happened is none of our business.
I think it`s good that engine brakes afetr tuning. It means it was engineered to it`s limits. Is the LS can hold 3 time the power from stock it means it ha alot of mass that could be removed. Ferdynand Porshe said: “The perfect race car crosses the finish line first and then crumbles into its individual parts.”
I would highly recommend getting a tune from someone like M Engineering. McLarens are missing basic ECU safeties, which cause a lot of blown engines. M engineering adds a bunch of safeties with their tune.
I used to work on light aircraft many moons ago, they had in the workshop a wheeled cutter for filters. It worked like a can opener. It did not add any metal particles to the filter. It looks like a filter removal tool but had multiple cutting wheels. Wrap round a filter clamp and rotate until filter casing parts, clean cut straight through. Found easily on the web as oil filter cutting tool. Inexpensive easier disassembly of filter case and more accurate diagnosis of particles in filter.

Awesome project! No updates? It’s been 11 months! I’m dying for the ending haha!
28:55 - 22mpg 😵. My brother's VW T3 auto only gets 18mpg. Time for him to get a McLaren engine fitted.
Small Car Performance just released a swap option for Tesla drive units in the old VW vans. They've got a 450hp P85 unit in their van that makes it look like it's going to lift the front tires while smoking the rears.
a good mechanic always imparts his knowledge, top work
to clean leather, Cadillac said 5 parts water to one part woolite detergent, and for fingerprint gunk on steering wheels or shifters, try spray nine from home depot cleans tires the best as well
Alex you’re a brave man stepping into the McClaren world. Best of luck and great vid!
It’s just a glorified Nissan.
@@longsleevethong1457 What kind of Nissan has a Carbon Tub? Might need to snag one 🤣
@@leepicgaymer5464 was teasing a bit but every mclaren uses the same engine. It’s the Nissan v8 out of the r390.

Having a Nissan LeMans racing engine( even though it was designed by TWR, a British Racing Team) can't be a Bad thing, just change them Rods when you want more Power😅
@@markwalton8644 notice on his other videos that regular Nissan parts were working on the mclaren?
one of the reasons for the longer change interval is because of synthetic oil. We are told it is supposed to protect better, thus the need to change as early isn't needed. I have been doing 10k change intervals for YEARS, and have never had an issue.
Looks like a great garage with awesome people.
Would love to see more videos from there
That shop is amazing. Awesome to have them so close to you.
Awesome video. Not a huge fan of McLarens but still very informative and entertaining. Ivan did excellent on camera. I'm very picky and I wouldn't mind him working on my stuff (though I don't own a supercar lol).
Alex, you're an awesome man for giving Kevin his dream car at such an incredible deal..
Just showing again why you're one of RUclipss best car guys !!
I think it was Jeremy Clarkson that said "Alfa Romeo builds cars to be as good as the can be, briefly." I think that applies to McLaren as well.
Maybe, but McLarens cost a fortune in maintenance, just ask Jay Leno.
How to do a FORENSIC OIL CHANGE at 24:40
You're slowly starting to become my favorite RUclips channel again. It's between you and Cleet now. My son (almost 2) loves anything to do with cars and same here!
Crazy hearing Gilberts IL...spent 15 years there and moved from there to Alabama in Dec.
Alex this was a Great video! Can’t wait to watch you change the water-pump. You need to take her on some really twisty country roads to appreciate her!
Just me? Or does Ivan look a little bit like the Edge from U2? 😊 What a calm and gentle demeanour! Great video Alex!
3000 miles, no more no less as the only people telling you otherwise want you to buy a new car or lease a new one every 3 to 5 years, and oil and filters are less than the cost of a new engine, plus also when the engine starts let it do its start up procedure where it automatically revs high for about a minute or two and then drops down to get the oil to the bearings, then drive off
which will probably do more to save the engine in general than anything else.
5k mile OCIs on any engine w/DI. DI tends to cause fuel dilution of the oil - I have seen in many UOAs across different engines, and it's just not worth pushing the oil life in these low bearing clearance engines when the oil is dropping a viscosity grade due to fuel dilution.
3k if you love your car :)
He's tested other brands but here he's comparing blended to full synthetic.
ruclips.net/video/qCsQMpaNmw8/видео.html
"I don't do pricing" Damn, this guy really does work on McLarens.
I’ve learned so much with this channel. Keep up the great work.
It’s crazy how this car even with mods is still 200 whp short of a 765lt. Amazing what ten years of progress Can do.
I take it no update on this one?
So STOKED for a midweek McLaren Video!!! Nice 👍🏻 so glad water pump is all for now can’t wait to see it tuned and running smoothly (and safely) on the dyno!
Where is this car now?
What a beautiful car! It's design is timeless. I'm looking forward to seeing you fix all the issues and get all that lost horsepower back!
I was wondering what was happening with the race car. Now I think they are designed with job security for all McClaren employees in mind. It was funny when you said you have a repair shop just a half hour from home, and the shop owner says, "Its fate." At least the mystery of after market products has been solved.
Great video. Tell that cool ass dude he's a natural on camera, and should start his own channel.
I love Arne. One of the chillest guys I've ever met
Buddy of mine worked for Nissan Engineering. Told me they did oil tests to see how long they could get out of an oil change without any change in protection. 10K no problem. They went up to 15K and oil was just starting to show some downward trends.
DME making McLaren engines go kaboom since 2018.
ROFL... yup... The internet hype and marketing always seems not to include that part in the brochures... oil change interval...my E46 M3 interval is 15,000 or 1 year...I've changed it at 7,500 miles or max 1 year. @105,000 miles, Blackstone oil analysis for rod bearing copper...excellent shape. VANOS excellent shape (visual by my mechanic). Valvetrain zero sludge or heat discoloration
I bought my E46 M3 with 40k miles and put 125k miles on it, I only ever followed oil change intervals according to the car's computer. The car never had any issues from the oil change intervals the entire 7 years I owned it, same with my E90 M3 granted I only put 30k miles on it.
Excellent content as usual Alex ! Fixed that baby up for 2 dollars haha , laughed so hard at that. Awesome !
What a great group of guys! Can't wait to see them re-tune and dyno her.
Loving the content LSC ❤❤
Thanks brother!
I love Pontiac like you I had a 2K Grand Prix GT, I had it twin 4 door family care running low 9's the 3.8 took 44bls of boot before i had a window. Then I pulled the body tubed it made it RWD and mad room for and LSX with no hood.
McLaren engines are made to perform as they leave the factory.
They need lightness to hit those high RPMs. Try and rev your LS to 9k and I'm sure you will get the same outcome as those broken rods and Pistons from those modified McLaren engines

You need to explain how you figured out the fuel door part was a clone of cabinet hardware. It’s easy to figure out replacement spark plugs, plug packs, etc, but how did you figure out the fuel door?
I want to know this too
I don't know, but my guess would be a google image search.
There is a factory part number on the latch. Just google it and see what pops up
that hand lotion keeps the wedding ring from rusting.
I like that trick in the vice! I’ve cut filters, but never squeezed them out.

What happened to peter?
Please shut up about this. I'm sick of hearing about it.
@@Private011 don't read it then
Obviously Peter is out of a job. Maybe you could start your own channel and give him a job. Maybe Alex will bring him back, but that won't be any time soon. So it does'nt help to chirp in the comments about it either, what ever happened is none of our business.
@@scottsinaz3000 negative attitude
I think it`s good that engine brakes afetr tuning. It means it was engineered to it`s limits. Is the LS can hold 3 time the power from stock it means it ha alot of mass that could be removed. Ferdynand Porshe said: “The perfect race car crosses the finish line first and then crumbles into its individual parts.”

Any ide what the paint looks like under the wrap?
This mechanic in cannonball garage has your same energy or did a great job matching your energy. Super nice video as usual
I would highly recommend getting a tune from someone like M Engineering. McLarens are missing basic ECU safeties, which cause a lot of blown engines. M engineering adds a bunch of safeties with their tune.
Yep, that's the plan
Love that you cross reference parts to find an alternative. Major win finding that part for $1.99!
Perfect edit. I liked how you said fire the exact moment the flames come out of the exhaust at 1.07
