This video has many metaphors. He is Sadness, the people who try to stop her are things like (just an example) job, problems, dysfunctional love, and the people around too, but problems not so hard.
She stares at sadness like confronting it, she drinks, she laughs at it, she dances and doesn't care if sadness and her problems see her, she tries to be happy. Then the hardest problems try to stop her, try to manipulate her, try to make her do what they want. She fights them, she wants to be happy. But Sadness stands, Sadness won't let them hurt her, she fights Sadness, she wants to avoid Sadness, but she realizes Sadness is inevitable, Sadness will always be there. Sadness is a way to let your waters flow, to let things out. Sadness embraces her, she is safe. Sadness is not bad after all. Sadness is a Blessing.
Oh my gosh I love what u wrote!!! It makes sense!
***** some people see through and some people don't, that doesn't make them dumbs. People see things different.
I loved you vision of it, but I, personally, prefere to think that the other people are just real people around her judging her for all the sadness she has. Just like someone with depression and people are like "c'mon get over it"
Dang , That was deep man. I already loved this song but that gave me a completely new understanding of it,so I thank you for that! Its amazing how we can all interpret things differently.
Beautiful interpretation :) Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it...
8 years later this is still one of the best videos i've ever seen
And one of the greatest songs ever created
Didn't know it was that old. I just heard it last year.
14 years later it is still one of the best for me too
this dress is everything
I've been trying to figure out who designs it for years!! I want it in black 🤤
@@MimsCreativeArtistry and did you discover who designed it? i need that info, too :3
A lot of people see the older man as her father. Maybe he is. I see him as her "boyfriend", as her sadness. It is old and heavy and grey, you know it isn't right for you... but it's also familiar, strangely comforting and sometimes you just give in and let it take control... You can read so many things in this video, I think it's quite beautiful x
I saw him as her bf too
Yeah, her „boyfriend“. Whose name is depression. Like, they are familiar with each other, he’s her friend, but he’s also someone who holds her back. Toxic and comfortable at the same time.
I see my past relationship and he was 3 years younger
Boyfirend for the context of the song lyrically. I know this all too well.
alluring explanation!
Stellan Skarsgard is so ridiculously handsome
+aeroga he's too sexy, he shouldnt be let out lol ._ hes great in BBC River, wow he can sing and dance...
I love his paper in Melancholia
I mean he did create such a hot family
I love him
?
Lykki Li is a true artist and her videos are art masterpieces in motion.
Well said and I agree. 💯
Laughed in the beginning (because of the awkward tension), cried at the end. God, I love this singer, she has a spot in my heart next to Susanne Sundfor.
YES!
Today December 23rd 2021 we lost the amazing writer Joan Didion. Through this song we remember her. Lykke Li was inspired by Didion's book "The Year of magical thinking" to write this masterpiece. Lykke has quoted Didion a few times in her interviews. Lykke introduced me to Didion and I thank her.
Rest in peace, Joan Didion.
Lykke Li is a blessing
we exist
Those eyes of Stellan 's OMG.. Stunning
Tarik Saleh is an extremely talented, brilliant director.
That butler is the most butlerishy butler I ever saw in my entire life. I hope that actor gets to play a butler for the rest of his life. Amen.
I guess if Tariq Saleh was going to put his name on a music video production, he was going to make sure everything in the scene was perfect, starting with casting.
Life is not about wishing storms to pass. It's about learning how to dance in the rain.
Beautifully said
I used to know how to dance in the rain but life made me forgot about it 😥
When we choose not to focus on what’s missing from our lives but are grateful for the abundance that’s present… we experience heaven on earth.
Everybody's ended up speaking in facebook-post speak. It's twee. Personally, any post that starts "Life is about..." makes my toes curl.
Thank you
This remains the most beautiful video i've ever seen.
She so before her time, timeless artist and true old soul
I keep coming back to this year after year.. As much as the "main characters" are extraordinary in their portrayal, can we please acknowledge the brown-haired "cigarette" actress? The observer, teetering herself on the edge of an unfulfilled life, eyeing the possibility of release.
I noticed her specifically as well.
This is a very powerful piece, from beginning to end. ❤
This is me when I'm at family dinners.
***** haha same here!! :D
***** hahah, your comment made my day!
+PiraClue Yeah! Mine too!
+Ian Valero jajjajajaajaja:)
+Ian Valero I pour a glass of wine everytime one of my aunts asks me where my boyfriend's at
To those of you who have no idea what this is all about. The guy is sadness. She is trying to convince him to stop holding on to her by showing him what he does to her. She is trying to dance away the problems, run, drink a smile about all what makes her usually cry... but in the end, we all end up in the arms of sadness because it defines who we are. It is a part of us.
There's something totally enchanting about the way she drinks and dances. She's absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful video and a song.
Yes, and also very powerful. ❤
I’m a middle-aged man, but Lykke Li’s, Björk’s and PJ Harvey’s songs about love, heartbreak and sadness speak to me like no other.
You have good taste
Same page man, have to add Cat Power also
Polly every time for me.☮️🇬🇧
I am 20 years old and during my life I've been always trying to fight sadness somehow but it always comes back. Sadness and loneliness seem to be the only friends are always around. I identify a lot with this video... No matter how much you dance and/or try to fight it (be positive), it will always embrace you one way or another
Gabriel Wayne It will get better, somehow, eventually. Hugs.
it does. thanks my friend
So effffin true. One day I can be happy as hell dancing in my room then the next day crying in the train
No it’s just a lie , it will never get better , sadness will always come back
+fazie nova only of you allow it
Sadness makes people so uncomfortable. But it needs to be embraced or it festers and drives you crazy. Such a well made video...
People who have never felt this way, will never know how hard it is and sometimes think you just want to get attention, thanks for this song.
Masterpiece!!
I love her album concepts :) This song is great though and if you listen to each album you can tell how much her voice has developed. Just stunning, unique and underrated by a lot of people. Then again I like her to be a secret indulgence that not everyone knows about :D
The man represents her grieving soul, which is so painful that she starts suppressing it. Dancing out in life, ignoring the sadness in her, but you can only hide from your soul for so long. Once she’s forced to face her sadness and traumas, she’s healed by integrating this part of herself.
I have a crush o Lykke and on the entire Skarsgard family
Maria M. Alex, Bill
Maria M. Me too
Maria M. Wait wait wait, they are related????
April R no they're nor
Lykke Li is quite beautiful
Sometimes, love hurts so much, that you never feel as alive as when you're truly sad or desperate, after having your heart broke.
Sadness is a blessing, because it feeds you with so many feelings, it allows you to feel something inside, something you'd never feel with only happiness in your life.
This lady is fantastic. She has renewed my hope for imaginative great sounding music in the 21st century.
So many songs stay forgotten in the clutter of daily produced music for the masses, shamefully not heard and enjoyed. Shame, because songs (and videos) like this definitively deserve far more attention..
Skarsgård is a genius actor !!!
This is such a beautiful video. And seriously, depending on my mood, it got different layers for me. I used to think it's about depression, but it's only depression when you let the waiters dictate the way you are allowed to feel and behave. However, in this video, she refuses to let herself be guided to her place. Instead, her dancing looks as if she neither wants to deal with either sadness or depression (the suppression of negative feeling, which in the end results in the suppression of ALL feelings as well), until Sadness approaches her and helps her to calm down again.
I think that's the lesson after all: LET sadness be close to you.
All those other people, so well-behaved and composed... they don't react to her display at all. They are emotionally numb. The trouble is, they don't feel sadness, but neither do they seem to enjoy anything anymore. So, no matter how much it hurts, choose sadness. It's your friend.
I think the key point in this video is that through sadness she expresses herself totally dispatched for everyone around her... she does not see them and they dont 'see' her... sadness is an isolation that no one around can see or sympathise with... in sadness we are alone...
I'm in love with Lykke Li ♥
Art as a music video.
Has she won any Grammys? Because if not she deserves one. Not that im trying to implicate that you need a trophy to manifest how talented you are, but this video definitely substantiates all her hard work.
Interpretation: Sadness is in everyone. Everyone was sad. The rich are sad. In the beginning you notice everyone silent. Serious. Except for her, she shows she is mature in her feelings of sadness. She is singing to her boyfriend of how to deal with his sadness: SADNESS IS A BLESSING. Her message is basically to own when you're sad. For it is when we are sad that we grow, and we become better. To be free-spirited when we are sad, and to choose to see sadness, as a blessing.
Tom Flores thank you
Tom Flores good
Wise words. Sadness and suffering help us awaken to our selves and helps to deepen the self. Gravity builds muscle, sadness builds the soul.
At least once a year I come here to find myself in this video. It really makes me feel Im not alone. Thanks for this, Lykke
Extraño tanto está lykke li 😢
I think she's confronting people who says that are happy but are just Hippocrates, they say they're happy but her sadness is a blessing compared to their happiness. nowadays people always keep trying to avoid problems, act like nothing is happening, taking anti depressive for normal situations, it's like we had to act like real robots who ain't got any feelings.
Nenhuma artista, viva ou morta, consegue me atingir tanto quanto a Lykke Li. Ela traduz td, na música q ela faz... traduz tudo q eu sinto, sinti, vivo e vivi. Obrigado por ser a artista que você é pra mim e para o mundo.
The ending of this video makes me cry every time.
this is actually so visionary her acting is gold
I usually don't listen to music that isn't Metal or Punk Rock but I fell in love with Lykke Li
This video says so much even before she starts to sing, its got a loud silence about it ._, never heard this song before and i think its amazing
this song will never die, i love her.
look at the passion in her eyes
Am speechless I swear I will meet u someday lykke li
ugh, okay, thats totally not creepy...
+Yatsura2 no it isn't!
chiwendu confidence
said every stalker, ever
I like the video version so much because the break at 5:01 gives me immense goosebumps after the whole build up and passion of the song to that point. I love her and this video is art.
it's been years but this song still continues to play in my head...
Aw, I love her white dress! And the song of course :D
The video is amazingly shot! Tarik Saleh really knows his work.
Her dress
Wish she'd do another album like this.
Lykke is magic.
My interpretation: She was sick of being sad, so she tries to rebel against it by making a joke out of herself and not caring about what others think of her..because that strong will would be a contradiction of what she's really feeling but eventually she realized she does actually care how people perceive her and judgement along with her personal issues finally get to her, and she accepts her feelings..that she's broken by life and all she has left is her sorry feelings.
The end. :)
+Meliena Vamps I sort of followed the same interpretation, but I saw the man as the "sadness" which she went to comfort, since oftentimes sadness is something that people dwell on repeatedly because its something that can be "missed" almost when its not there.
+Tony Raccoon Yep, I get it. I think he's 'sadness' too. If we're right then I love the way she personified her feelings. Lykke Li is bomb♡
I kind of got the same impression, with the added element of ignorance by the people around her. She's sad, maybe even depressed, but everyone around her is trying their best to ignore her mental health, so she 'acts out', but "sadness" is always there for her.
If I remember correctly the song and video is a tribute to her late father
+Charlie Sturgess Ikr, she should do an interview explaining all the artistic details...but then again art is meant for the viewer to interpret themselves..I love her😂
Wow and I'm only hearing about this artist now damn I'm soo behind. I've always thought I'm a loner Bt this girl her depression is on another level
Its been 10 years and still this song hold a special place in my heart.
Its 2020 and Still listening to it. The clip is so meaningful, cant stop watching. LYKKE love you ❤️
This is probably the best video I've ever seen. My teacher played it to our class and everyone fell completely silent - the acting is brilliant, you sense there's a very powerful underlying message.
Would like to know which year of school you were when your teacher played it?
@@candyal5855 1st year of Uni.
@@oddnthank you for answering. We all need to understand depression and how to deal with it in one's life or for the people around us. Glad to know you were taught in uni.
@@candyal5855 What makes you think the teacher was teaching anything that day? Maybe she just liked the video.
I don't wanna feel sad anymore
This song is a blessing. This song is a pearl. 😇
Sadness expressed and felt very well.... silent cry.
This is a MASTERPIECE! The song, the Video, her, all of it!
She looks beautiful in this video and kinda like Elizabeth Olsen.
Sadness Queen I love you
how about we say she is amazing period.
Thank you #LykkeLi for working with my dad (Actor Stellan Skarsgård) in this video. You both are very talented and I am a huge fan of your music 🎶
You are Awesome 👏
Skarsgård Love ❤️ Daniel Skarsgård
Are you really? 🤔
Isn't Tarik Saleh just amazing?
sure is
One of the best music videos I've ever seen. Piece of art
shitty taste
11 years since this came out! 😮 this is who i see when I’m watching Andor lol. Luthen is sadness 😊
Exactly. Perfect portrayal.
I have been obsessed with this song and the video for a decade ❤
This is exactly what depression feels like.
sadness is all i live for. its the most fun i can have.. i dont know if thats normal? i know im depressed but i dont think its that bad. i am pretty sure sadness is one of mankinds most powerful emotions. probably why people (including myself) like sad movies..
being a hot young girl dating an older man?
Stonem001 I don't think she means the exact circumstances of this video
The example of a young girl dating a seemingly richer old man is just a metaphor for selling out in a way, and throughout her life she's learned to be a lover of more than just hot people her own age? Can you say the same? Who is to say that can't come from a place of sorrow from some? Just because a young girl gets with an old man doesn't mean she's just some dumb blonde bombshell looking for a constant vacation,
Anyways she may mean it's more about being in a predicament with love where you feel trapped or somewhere that's not ideal for you, she laughs after drinking in the video because she knows she's taking it out on herself like self-sabotage for feeling other hurt her, she also laughs she is also trying to hurt him in a way by drinking so it means instead of throwing fits or yelling at him, she is wise enough to kind of take it out on herself instead, either way it's an unhealthy relationship, but she has clearly learned to cope about things better emotionally than the people around her, if they all just pointed and gawked and laughed about the crazy girl in the room, it wouldn't portray that everyone in the room knows that she's in pain, average people would gossip and smirk and roll their eyes at the crazy girl, that's also maybe why it's at a super fancy restaurant, it leads us to believe that everyone in the room is cultured and recognizes her pain or something
His face looks disappointed constantly, not just with we but obviously more with himself through her
She means depression feels this way... because it makes you feel alone in a battle, usually against a lover or romantic situation, abuse, trauma , etc, you learn to be strong and laugh at it in a sense, it can make you feel stuck, it can also hurt the ones around you, they can also be a part of the problem...
And we live in a society that suppresses a lot of people who are better at managing, as crazy the way they manage seems at times
@@Martin-zr2tb Explained it very well👍🏼
It’s what it feels like dating an asshole
Sadness is a blessing. I love this song!
Love this girl, gestures on her face are priceless!!
The epic nature of this song deserves a video. Thank god they made a good one because they understood this. Sitting on the toilet singing was a natural step for her...a necessary one she made at the time that resonates with people for good reason. How far has she come? Say you, pretty far. Say me, pretty far. The performance is still there, but in way that reaches a broader more watered-down audience due to it's epic nature and production value. Not a bad thing. You and her still exist.
I love it, this so beautiful, Lykke li is gorgeous and Stellan Skarsgard´s face! This was a masterpiece shot.
She could be a good actress.
there is something very much attractive in that sadd madness that she has
One final interpretation of this video:
On a high, perhaps superficial level actor Stellan Skarskard might represent Lykke Li's father and the complex love/hate she has for him. But on a deeper level he indeed represents her depression, as others like Luis mentioned. What is most important though is to realize the meaning of the end of the video.
_All_ the others in that restaurant (which, I believe, is in Stockholm's Grand Hotel, where I stayed for a week years ago) represent *saboteurs* and "see no evils" (the ones who silently condone the saboteurs). The third party actors, including from our own family, who say "You cannot become a singer / actor / writer/poet (like me) etc", "Get a real job so you do not starve etc" or (the eaters) who never encourage us or protest what the saboteurs say. Those had power over Lykke until the end, because she had still not fully embraced her depression.
Once she did (the moment Skarsgard stood up from his chair and everyone was left in awe) they no longer had any power over her. Skarsgaard does not play a... mafia boss (I refer to the fake scar on his cheek) with a much younger mistress at the end saving a ... damsel in distress or Lykke's father but *Lykke herself becoming their own woman,* believing in herself, not giving a rat's behinds for what saboteurs say and 'see no evils' _do not_ say and ... finally succeeding. 💖
"¿Será el dolor el único amante que pueda llamar mío?" 💜💔
Still listening this song seven years later. So good!
Sometimes You tube Recomends an artist thats 100% original.this one of those few rare cases.Brilliant.
I love Stellan Skarsgård and Lykke li together! this is a beatiful song and amazing video! greetings from Colombia

Alessandra Torres I love Bill Skarsgard, a hunk for sure

"sadness is a pearl, sadness is my boyfriend, oh sadness i'm your girl"
that guy crying my god, when old people cry, i cry
What?! This is exactly how I imagine scandinavian way of seeing life in a video! Thanks a lot Lykke Li & Co.!

My wounded rhymes make silent cries tonight
My wounded rhymes make silent cries tonight
And I'll keep it like a burning
Longing from a distance
I ranted, I pleaded, I beg him not to go
For sorrow, the only lover I've ever known
Sadness is a blessing
Sadness is a pearl
Sadness is my boyfriend
Oh sadness, I'm your girl
These scars of mine make wounded rhymes tonight
I dream of times when you were mine so I
Can keep it like a haunting
Heart beating close to mine
Sadness is a blessing
Sadness is a pearl
Sadness is my boyfriend
Oh sadness, I'm your girl
I ranted, I pleaded, I beg him not to go
For sorrow, the only lover I've ever known
Every night I rant, I plead, I beg him not to go
Will sorrow be the only lover I can call my own?
Sadness is a blessing
Sadness is a pearl
Sadness is my boyfriend
Oh sadness, I'm your girl
Sadness is a blessing
Sadness is a pearl
Sadness is my boyfriend
Oh sadness, I'm your girl
Sadness is my boyfriend
Oh sadness, I'm your girl
Oh sadness, I'm your girl
Oh sadness, I'm your girl
that one comment that's just the lyrics
My all time favorite song up to this year 2022 whenever i’m sad. Sadness is a blessing indeed.
Stellan Skarsgård always gets the sad roles
I love the actor at the end
used to love this song when i was going through hard break up with my soulmate 4 years ago. this lyrics and expression in this video was so familiar to my feelings in those heavy times. now i still love this song but dont feel the same spleen as i used to when i listen it. for me it will be always a song about badly broken heart and soul
Im crying rn bc my mom spent 30 years with my dad even though he doesnt even love her since he catcalls other women and it pisses me off by the fact that my mom stayed with him it aches me bc she couldve had a better life (i just didnt know who to tell)
i feel sorry for your mom. hope everything gets better today. May Universe bring the best for her🥰
it's been 3 years, I hope you and your mom are well.
to me this is a father and daughter. fantastic intro. great dynamic between lykke and stellan. incredible how much can be said when no words are spoken at all.
I'm generally already drunk when I attend family dinners. Great song
I think that he's older not as a father figure but because this is a sadness that she's had for a long time and she tries to drink the pain away but people tell her she needs to stop drinking and since that's the only way she knows how to stop her sadness, she relapses. The people around her have their own sadnesses that they try to deal with in their own way, but they're silent about it.
it reminded me of the movie melancholia
I just like this song. Makes me feel a lot of things I normally don't let out. I see someone just about to break & I've been there too. And I'm a Man.
Quite possibly my favorite music video ever... everyone involved deserves a standing ovation down to the last face-acting extra. I love it. Great song too.
