At the beginning I assumed that he represented her lover, obviously being the older and less untame aspect of the hypothetical relationship between them, he embodies the harsh and critical love much like a father would, hence her inextricable need to release pent up emotions. At the end I think the "man" (Stellan) shows affection in a way that I perceive as much more fatherly nurturing then I think would have been the case, had he been her lover. I like the notion of him being sadness incarnate.
