My Response To Fatphobia Claims

  • I was scrolling through reddit today and came across this post saying I have “fatphobic tendencies”. This was really hard for me to read and caused me to take a critical look back at my previous comments regarding obesity, bariatric treatments, and diet recommendations (Keto, intermittent fasting, vegan, etc.) Our culture demonizes people for their weight, from rogue marketing pushing “ideal bodies” in media to a lack of representation for large bodied people on stage and on screen. That being said, I am a doctor, and my job is to help people live longer, healthier lives, and often those results can be achieved through a variety of tactics that will reduce the weight of people who suffer from obesity. It’s a fine line between helping my patients and making sure they don’t feel judged or criticized for the way they look, and I’m working hard to get it right.

Yes although that’s not what they said. I wholeheartedly disagree with what they said but they used the term fat phobic not fat shaming. The difference is that fat phobic is the notion that one fears fat people so to them they shouldn’t be a thing, i can see why this vision could be attributed to health professionals as doctors would normally never advise one to be overweight or stay overweight for obvious health reasons but i mean that’s the point of their profession, no one should blame them for promoting a healthy lifestyle with healthy life goals and them doing so doesn’t mean they are judgemental either so their stance on the matter is just stupid to me.

the problem with doctors hyperfocusing in weight is that they tend to ignore everytging else because of that. i know for me, its completely fair to bring up my weight when i talk about the issues i have because im sure it affects it. but just saying "just loose weight" completely ignores the other symptoms that i have that arent necessarily caused by weight. like i seriously doubt loosing 10 pounds will lessen my extreme migraines. i personally really struggle with exercises because my joints so badly i can barely move the next day, regardless of my intensity. weight is definitly a big factor in health, but its not always the big boogieman people think it is. sometimes its just a symptom

But Dr. Mike was the first one to get him properly checked out and he turned out to be something incredibly serious and had nothing to do with the patient’s weight.

    • @charlieisacatwithseizures

This is an excellent point. Fatphobia is when people say you are: lazy, disgusting, mean, stupid, ugly, worthless, don’t deserve respect or rights, should be treated unequally and should be shunned in society because you are fat. Health is important and should be sought out. I think health is less tied to the number on the scale or bmi and more about your habits. Do you eat balanced meals and exercise often? Do you avoid harmful habits like smoking and excessive drinking? If you get the recommended amount of exercise and eat with nutrition in mind, weight, shape, or size shouldnt really matter. As someone who is very anti-fatphobia, all i ask is people stop judging me, being cruel to me, prevent me from opportunities that i am well equipped for such as jobs, and constantly pressuring me to take up extreme measures that lead to eating disorders because of my size. Really, unless you are my doctor and you know my lifestyle and habits, you shouldnt be commenting on someone elses weight or what they eat. Its not your place. And i think its toxic to expect everyone to sustainably be able to be thin. Thinness does not equal health, and sometimes people cannot sustain a weight that someone else can. Yes, if we all starved, we could be thin, but that isnt sustainable. And i ask people to understand weight loss is a lot harder than it looks. It takes both mental and physical effort. It can consume your mind until its all you think about. I want everyone to be healthy, find food that is nutritious and satisfying. Find movement that makes them feel happy and do it often as possible. But that does not mean its ever ok to bully people because of how they look.

It's because some people only achieve body positivity through denial. That is the #1 reason right there. A lot of fat people are completely aware of the very real health risks that come with being over weight and for some of them that makes it really hard not go through life hating that extra weight. Some fat people want so badly to feel good about their bodies that they strive for body positivity in the most mentally (and physically) unhealthy way possible, which is denial. This denial is a process that usually starts by looking for other fat people who have already achieved some level of body positivity. They observe these people and weed out the ones that take the "body positive while working to be healthier" approach because having to address the health aspect gets in the way of the goal. They then start focusing on fellow fat people who adamantly insist that they are perfectly healthy and who tend to cite bogus medical articles as their justification. Body positivity without denial DOES exist but only when people have psychologically healthy reasons behind it. People who just want to be told that they aren't actually unhealthy so that they can feel good about what they see in the mirror are the people who throw around "fatphobic" and insist that anybody who claims to care about their health is a liar who just hates fat people. Their friends and family can have been expressing concern for their health for years but as soon as they achieve unhealthy "body positivity" through denial they suddenly accuse those friends and family of just hating fat people. It's a really big problem that's becoming more and more common as more and more false information is spread. It's very unfortunate that this problem has also started to fuel the misconception that all fat people are in denial and just don't care about their health when that's not true at all.

I feel like it is all about the communication. I have met a doctor who was slightly fat something about me. Im not a morbidly obese person, but... Lets just say my BMI is quite high. And my obgyn refused to give me any form of contraception unless I lose weigh. She said that straight to my face. Literally the first thing she said to me, even before any form of check-up.
And while I know all medications are counted per 1kg of body weigh and too much can hurt, or just simply be ineffective... Well she could use at least different language. Cuz I knew that and I was hoping that as a medical proffesional she could see more about me and help me find a solution.
It was my first visit there years ago and I am very much afraid to go anywhere else again just to hear the same thing. I am struggling with that weighloss process and those comments are not helping. I wouldn't call her fatphobic tho. More like biased, uncaring and unkind.

Doctors can learn a lot in their own fields. So can people in a lot of other fields. Doctor Mike agreed with this statement in the video. Initial medical training isn’t all encompassing, professionals should spend their careers continuously learning, as they are confronted with new challenges and because the field evolves constantly. I quite like Doctor Mike, and still feel he could still continue to learn about working with fat people and considering our bodies from a health at every size perspective. Not because his way is inherently or always wrong, or because I think he’s fatphobic, but because there are other approaches and considerations about obesity. There are a growing number of people who are living fat and healthy. He would do well to talk with an actual fat person/fat health advocate about this.

I think the "body positivity" thing is actually just abt appearance bc the hourglass skinny body is what women are pressured to achieve. Like that's the reason for the mouvement. It's bc of the pressure society puts onto people to achieve the desired body or "body goals" and it's talking abt appearance. Loving yourself genuinely imo is taking good care of yourself, eating what's best for you, getting exercise and sleep and just listening to your body's needs in general. What has been helping him remarkably is a keto diet and working out, and it's helped him sleep better. He doesn't suffer from insomnia and sleep apnea in the way he used to anymore. He's the healthiest and happiest I've ever seen him. My stepmom is incredible with natural and holistic health matters and she is the healthiest person I know. She has changed my dad's life for the better and I cannot thank her enough. This all goes to say that keto isn't for everyone! And that's okay. Just in my dads experience, he's gained back so many years of his life. Overall, I'm sharing this story because it proves that people are different and different things work for different people. And as for Mike, I appreciate that you are as unbiased as you are because that is so incredibly hard to do these days without potentially receiving backlash.

yeah apparently in today's society you can't say a single thing just in case you offend someone, I corrected someone on a youtube comment and I got someone trying to bully me because they didn't like me telling someone that they was in correct even though I gave an example of why this person was incorrect, the original person never responded back to me but this bully did

The one that picked my interest more is the comment about doctors mentioning your weight on a medical checkout. I mean what do you expect! it's not like a doctor approached you on the street to say you're fat, you came to the doctor to ask what is wrong with you AND YOU PAID FOR IT!. It's like going to a restaurant, paying for the meal and then the restaurant ghosts you and never give you your meal, it would be stealing if the doctor didn't say what your health issues are.

Therefore, a simple inoffensive comment may come across as attacking when it's actually harmless and now dependent on how a person dissects it.

I don't see Dr. Mike being fatphobic. I will say I have been to doctors that completely disregard the reason I came to the doctor's office only to hammer on about weight. Saw one about a ringworm infection and he just went on about weight this and that, when I had no prior relationship with him and I had not had any major changes since last time I was at a doctor, so it felt unwarranted. For years I avoided the doctor because I knew the conversation would turn into what I perceived as shame and not care. My current doctor is great! She talked to me about risks, tested me for common issues, pointed me to some programs, had me talk to a sleep Dr. and a nutritionist and voila I'm down ~100 lbs and have kept it off for about a year now. This conversation needs to happen, but trust should first be established. I'm still on a weight loss journey, but weight is only a passing mention in doctor consultations...

It's because the people crying "fatphobia" are the ones that only want to hear: "It's okay to eat whatever you want and get as big as you want." It's not about facts, it's about feelings - like most of the garbage going on in the world today. Personally I'm overweight but I've been working on it. My doctor advised me to lose weight and my blood pressure sure showed it was getting worse and -SHOCKER- has gotten way better now that I'm down to a more reasonable weight. I didn't lash out because he pointed out I had been lazy as hell and not working out at all. But people don't care about anything other than feelings these days. "Tell me I'm PERFECT no matter what or you are against me!" I believe people can be whatever they want to be, eat as much as they want, etc. But don't get all offended if what you are doing is hurting your body and someone wants what is best for you.
Dr. Mike, you've been one of the best resources for this kind of information and at no point have I ever gotten anything from your videos other than you really care about your patients and us as well.

I feel like there is a point in this that wasn‘t quite clear enough:
He doesn‘t want you to lose weight because you‘re fat. He wants you to lose weight because the risks for certain health problems are so much higher if you‘re obese. Yes, you can be obese and live a healthy lifestyle, you can exercise, eat well, take good care of your body. But being at a healthy weight (not „skinny“, healthy.) still lowers certain health risks.

Solid point right here. Every time I get a check up or a doctor asks about my diet and what I eat/drink, I am always told I need to eat better and drink better, and that's me being "too skinny". Also it's so odd that this is what people think is fat phobic and his smoking example was good but also dentists always say the whole less sugar and acid stuff but nobody is out here with half of their teeth missing due to cavities complaining about dentists telling them they should work on improving their diet so the few teeth they have left don't rot away.
