There are ready-made packages that do this for you (stargazer, apaTables). All you need is just to run the command. Also, you can simply input the table in latex configured for APA style (which is freely available).

Great tutorials!
The approach to remove all borders first is the easiest and best way. Select the table, remove all borders; and then, select the table again, select LAYOUT tab following the design tab and select VIEW GRIDLINES at the extreme left to show the virtual table grids

Bravo! I couldn't get my titles to show up when inserting a table of figures (and still follow APA), but by adding a top row to the table with your shift-return trick solved the problem! THANK YOU!!

Why not using the automated numbering of tables feature in Word? Manually renumbering everything (including in-text references to tables) is a nightmare when you have to add or remove tables on a reviewer's request...

What's the use of creating another cell for the title instead of just writing it as text above the table?

it turns out to be too far away or to close quite often, with the extra cell youre creating a standardized distance :)
