Getting ever closer to home, flying our Cessna 172 from Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Alaska after panel upgrades. It's been a huge trip so far, and now we're about to enter the Canadian Rockies.
This type of flying is challenging, but flying in a new place is also a lot of fun. With careful planning, our aviation journey continues.
First we start in Grande Prairie, on our way to Ft Nelson. The first leg doesn't have a lot of terrain, and the flight goes by fast. We end the flight with some confusion on the radio, and someone taking off right in front of us.
Next flight, Ft Nelson to Watson Lake, this is by far the most beautiful of all our legs. Towering mountains, blue frozen lakes, it's really wonderful. At Watson Lake we see the rich history of the area, known for a stopping point for WWII aircraft going to Russia.
Our goal for the day is to get to Alaska, but now we try for another leg. Watson Lake to Whitehorse, another 3 hour leg of flying.
By the time we get in Whitehorse, we're really wiped out. We decided to call it a night. It's the safe thing to do.
The flying was great, but challenging. We hope you enjoy coming along.

Hey Chris! I’m new to your channel, but your content has been so entertaining and inspiring for me! Keep up the great work! ✈️👍
In regard to your comments on the air bridge to supply the Russians, during WWII, my dad while in the Canadian Army was stationed in Edmonton. The Russians would pick up the aircraft there. My dad’s duty was as a bartender and a mechanic. He mentioned that he served countless drinks to the Americans and Russians.
"Here we are in this aluminum tube, with a engine strapped to it." Best line ever. That will stick with me everytime I go up in my own little Skyhawk. Blue skies and tailwinds sir.
Wow, 9 hours of flying in one day. Last month I flew through the Canadian Rockies. From Valleyview Alberta to Grand Forks BC. What normally takes 16 hours by car, I was able to do in 3.5 hours with my Comanche 180. And with over half tanks of fuel left!!! But even after that flying single pilot, I felt very tired. Can't imagine what those long days must feel like. Love the videos!!
It really helped to be able to pass it back and forth. Helps with stamina for sure.
The algorithm does not disappoint, I watched a time lapsed video of somebody going from santa monica ca to new york. And now this popped up under suggestions, pretty rad.
BOOM! Happy to hear Al Gore is working for me.
Hey Chris.
Been watching since the beginning of your trip and during I completed my PPL! Your videos do keep somebody excited with flying.
Hopefully your next video comes out soon, been patiently waiting.
That intro with the music and transitions was crispy!
I like the new panel!
It's the bees knees.
Absolutely love the thought process and how you both listen to what the other might suggest. This kind of thinking ahead and considering all angles is what keeps us safe at the end of the day. It's so easy to let pressure and emotions take over when trying to make these decisions. Wow what beautiful scenery along the way though. I hope I'm still on your text list. I just wonder because I haven't gotten one from you in at least a couple of months and used to get them quite often. As always thanks for bringing us along and blessings to you and your family Chris.
Things have slowed down a bit! I forgot to text everyone about this one. I'll have to update everyone.
It's kinda their version of CRM just like the professionals 😀
Scud run to Whitehorse Haha! You guys are vikings for putting in the hours on this one. Congratulations on an epic flight! Always great content. Entertaining, and educational. Thanks for sharing!
Most welcome.
Omg you used guy on a buffalo. That is some funny stuff and such
Been waiting for this video! Lived up the expectations! Absolutely stunning!
Yay! Thank you!
I really like those grips for the yoke. Never seen them before. I bet it makes flying more comfortable.
They are real nice. AviationX Aircraft Interiors did they out of Conroe, Texas.
Thanks Chris, night shift for me here in Australia. So I get to kick back and watch your video!
These are taking FAR too long for you to upload. What? You have a life or something!? Kidding of course! Loved this entire series. Thanks for the continued content.
I have been looking for a new upload like even day since the last one!! Finally here!!!!
I absolutely love these videos! Glad you got past your creativity funk... this was fantastic. Seeing Whitehorse brought back a lot of memories of when we drove through there in our RV on the way back to Missouri. We slept in the Walmart parking lot. lol
I just drove through myself several weeks ago and slept at Walmart as well.
I know you wanted to go on to Alaska. But think you made the best choice. Hope the family and you are doing well. Take care - Be safe and God Bless.
It was a long day for sure, we had already had enough.
G,day Chris at AOA from Sydney Australia.
What a return adventure, scenic route with a box of fresh Timbits!!!
🙋🌏 Excellent film making
Thank you sir!
Great trip guys. You're so close! You'll be holding those kids nice and tight soon!
You bet!
The video quality is stunning! You are general aviation best ambassador. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot!
Epic journey, eh! Oh, no doubt, eh!
Awesome mate, great to see long haul adventures in a GA C172! Excellent videos and flight training content, huge thanks from myself, planning a discovery flight in January at 55yrs! Seasons Greetings from Australia 🛩️🎄✨😎👍
Great video. Thanks for taking us along. 👍🇨🇦
You're welcome!
another nice video THANKS
Glad you stated at Whitehorse. Hurry with the next video so we can talk about it in Oshkosh. Thanks again.
Will do!
Loved this video! I was happy as a clam when I saw it was 45 mins long! Looking forward to the next chapter…
1 more chapter!
Well Chris after watching for so long I finally went and done my discovery flight and fortunately I'm hooked thanks for the inspiration to do it🤙
Great Trip & tips will be planning a trip to Wasilla to see my little brother from NV. Thanks Guys
You bet!
Wow. This is absolutely fantastic.
Used to fish at 'Bridge Lake' in BC; when I was stationed at Ft Lewis, WA. Once attempted to drive with my 5th wheel (I called home) to Alaska. Covered a lot of the same 'route' once I got to Ft Nelson. Went on to Lake Watson, and apparently changed my mind.... Ended up driving to White Horse, YK. Saw the sun set and rise all inside of 15 minutes.. LoL.. Beautiful country in BC. No wonder that is the 'moniker' on their license plates! Enjoyed your trip with you! Will be looking for the 'final' legs.. Thank you for your effort and labor...!
I drove through recently. Moved a car up. Def did the midnight to 3AM run from Watson to Whitehorse.
Chris, Great job on the video. I really love this series and the series from the way down. Some day I hope to do the long flight up there myself. Got a bit more training and I feel I need to be a little more seasoned before making the jump though. Good luck on future adventures.
It's a big trip for sure. Not to be taken lightly.
Great video Chris! Beautiful flight for sure.
What a fantastic adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Positive ground contact
We overnighted in Watson Lake. We had previously gone from Lake Charles to Watson Lake via Ft Nelson. The T-41B had an extra 17 gallon tank in the baggage area that can pump up into the right wing tank. So burn right side down, move to left tank and fill the right from the baggage tank. Just watch your balance.
We topped off everything at White Horse, cleared customs at Northway and had enough fuel for Gulkana. I think that was the only leg we used the baggage tank. Very heavy getting out of White Horse.
Good idea to stop for the night.
We did something similar! Stay tuned for that.
I love your videos.
This episode struck me particularly. I trained to fly in Grand Prairie in 2005 and flew into Fort Nelson as my first leg of my cross country to Peace River then back to GP. I do recall turbulence also when i approached although the radio freq was good for me. When me and my CSI flew into Fort Nelson a day before I got myself outside of security and had alot of explaining to my instructor who reminded me our flight plan was time sensitive and my being locked out on wrong side of security lost us some time. OOPs

Plane! Yes yes! Me like plane! Plane me like! YES!!!
Haha
We don't speak Spanish in quebec lol. Awesome video, love yer channel
Nearly home guys!
Chris I could watch you guys for hours! so fun to watch your trip. Your sense of humor is awesome!!
Technical question: does ForeFlight sync with your Garmin gps? Aka. How do you get weather on ForeFlight?
Absolutely awsome!
Excellent!
Question: no more podcasts? The last was posted in January. Love ALL your content!
You guy's this is great.
It wouldn’t be Tim Hortons if it didn’t come with sheer disappointment. 😂
Common aircraft. Working on my PPL, completed both GS classes types (instrument and standard). Yet to do Flight portion and tests.
4:08 did you know you can get a sippy lid for a hydro flask? With and without a straw
“Permission to buzz the buffalo, eh?”
I tried to follow you on Google Earth. Would have enjoyed seeing a flight path. You do it very well. Thanks
Quite the journey! An adventure! Looking forward to seeing the next video. And, judging by the weather, etc. I'm guessing this happened last summer? (2021)
It sure did. May of 2021. Time flies!
Nice. Although I'd really want a parachute flying single engine over those rocks. Seemed like you stuck to the roads though at least 🤔👍
Ha, would be very simple to land on the road if anything went wrong. Much more simple than jumping out.
@@angleofattack Hopefully anyway 😬
Looks like Garmin just received an STC for the the GFC 500 autopilot for the 172D. You going for it??
There is a point in this video around 30mins or so where you can see the fatigue setting in.
Yeah... it's a lot. And many days of it. That last leg beat us up a lot more.
@@angleofattack Glad to see you decided to stop for the night there. CCLLLEEEEAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR
Could you share your rote of flight. I’d love to see how you picked your way through through the mountains.
We literally followed the road! Haha
Timbits? I hope you brought enough for everyone.
They gone boy!
u should check in on annylyn
You could have whittled this down to 10 min. This depicts all I hate about long flights and why driving wb far more pleasant in nearly same time. Then could have stopped at all best resaurants too. Consider keeping videos under 20 min.
No jelly in timbits
In Homer now, out on the spit. Do you offer flightseeing tours of the area. Would love to take some training with you, 150hr private now.
Yes we do! Give us a call or send us an email.
$1.44 gas? Tease!
Per litre. Last year.
What happened to the rest of the trip videos?
Coming soon!
Hey man! Had a question about the online ground school. I'm not super sure how this all works, but is this ground school good enough to get me by anywhere in the US? I believe all I have to do is learn enough to pass a written exam, right? (in Chicago rn)
Yes sir! Sure is! We have people take it all over the nation.
Actually, they don't pronounce it "shock-oh-lah-tay" anywhere in the francophone world. . It's simply 'chocolat', pronounced 'shock-o-lah'.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Your entire super long trip home was flown with an unairworthy airplane. And it was recorded. Although it was your avionics shops fault, you as pilot in command are ultimately responsible. You took out your DG. That’s fine. It was a primary instrument. The GI-275 is also a FAA approved replacement for the DG. However this is where it goes sideways. Since it replaces the primary DG instrument it must always be a DG. When in the ADI backup page it shows heading. When in the HSI page it shows heading. When in the HSI map page it shows heading. The unit must be locked to these 3 pages. No data page. No weather page. And no terrain page. Since you flew around with the terrain page it was obvious that the airplane was not installed in accordance with the Garmin STC and is therefor unairworthy. Sounds like a technicality. That’s all an insurance company needs to not pay a claim. It all a FAA rep needs to yank your license. The STC install manual is very clear on this and your shop should no better.
Good idea not succumbing to getthereitus.
I'm not the only one who admits turbulence bothers me. Especially when I'm by myself...Its not that I can't handle it I just don't like it.
Precisely. And it wears on you after a while. Trying to conserve our energy, it wasn't welcome.
The Tim Hortons hype is from before they were bought by an American company, and ruined. The doughnuts and timbits are now frozen, and the once fantastic quality coffee is crap. Apparently McDoggies bought out their coffe supplier, but they don't brew as strong. Still better than "timmies" now
Passenger looks like he one too many!
Too much trying to be funny
I really wouldn't want to fly with Chris. He makes multiple judgement errors and insists on his way. Only pretends to listen to his copilot. You can tell he's a novice instructor who really doesn't know a single thing about planes and their capabilities. Won't be long in Alaska till he makes the news.
Technically, those are Bison. 🦬
Technically they taste the same.
How to increase your useful load by 100 pounds: $25,000 for an engine upgrade or.......stop eating TIMBITS.
Haha! I'll do TimBits method thanks!
