- British photojournalist Sean Smith talks to us about his work on the front line covering conflicts in the Middle East. He first arrived in Iraq in 2003, when Saddam Hussein was still in power, and was present during the bombing of Baghdad. He talks us through a haunting image he took - depicting suspected insurgents being ominously taken for questioning by US marines, blindfolded and walking in single file - during Operation Steel Curtain.
He also tells us about time he spent with the platoon of US Army sergeant Bowe Bergdahl in Afghanistan in 2009. In an incident still shrouded in mystery, Bergdahl walked away from his posting and was subsequently captured by the Taliban. He wasn’t released until 2014 - half a decade later.

@XcXcz but it's part of the job, this dude has a valid take. Whatever their motives are they know they have the ability to kill people (this is not true for all parts of the army) but if you're partaking in more than training drills for offense then it's iffy. Also what exactly are most of the army protecting by entering other countries? I'm sure they're protecting by literally digging a hole in a graveyard on the other side of the world; The literal ex-soldier in the video even brings up this gray area. "They have to do as they're told" this is not nazi Germany, if you don't agree with job ethics - then leave, such a poor excuse - hence the morally corrupt part. The humanitarian part of the army doesn't make up for the political side. Let people challenge political ideas, it's the whole point of a democracy.

U.S Soldier Bowe Bergdahl was charged in military court with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy he was sent to prison after his release from the Taliban. Some U.S soldiers called Bowe Bergdahl a traitor some of his fellow soldiers were killed by the Taliban looking for him when he walked off base and went AWOL.
Reductive presentation of the facts exclusively to make him look bad.
@@davidcheeseman658Bowe Bergdahl made himself look bad ! The facts are he went AWOL and got caught by the enemy and then went to a U.S military prison for it. Obama released 5 top Taliban fighters for exchange of a U.S traitor.

Btw, Ilford HP5 is a black & white film.
I wonder if he was shooting digitally. 2005... quite possible, but a lot of photojournalists were still shooting film then too. Certainly wasn’t HP5 though, you’re right!

Why would they keep a prisoner for 5 years. They gotta feed him. Clean him and whatnot. Never understood why he left post in the first place
They don’t do the best job of that and usually treat you as a sex slave as well.
But the main reason to take an American POW is for that sweet sweet political currency. We traded a half a dozen or so Gitmo prisoners just for him.

wow you are absolutely right. I even did 1.5 speed and it was much more ear pleasing to watch/hear and get the info of the videos content.
