Lee McDonald its actually viable. And a lot of people know and acknowledge it. The fact that he has no footsteps and a one burst potential, makes him a very scary flanker.
It's a situational thing: to alt fire all 5 orbs or only 2-3. As a longtime Zenyatta main (300hrs), I find that Zenyatta's ammo is as much of a valuable resource as Mcree's peacekeeper rounds. It's so easy to burn through the entire clip, and the reload animation is long enough to get oneself caught out in a bad situation (especially when you factor in harmony/discord animations, which cancel Zen's reload). Because of this, I have to time my reload WITH my harmony AND discord, and I emphasize as much value out of Zen's clip as I can during a match. For these reasons, I find that in many instances, it can be more viable to alt fire 2-3 orbs that will land on my target (and build ult charge), instead of charging all 5 orbs that might not all connect with the target (which takes more time and ammo), which ends up wasting ammo, and costs more resources in regards to Zenyatta's many expensive animations and potential damage value. You're not wrong; it's a playstyle preference, but it's logical to me to only fire all 5 orbs if I can attain maximum value out of the damage potential of 5 very angry Zenyatta projectiles.
The worst part is that he uses alternate fire more than he should. His in-fight reactions are not that good. Once in the fight he should forget about alternate fire but he keeps using it. And because of that, his discord orb usage is also not the best. Putting the discord is the very first thing any Zen must do.
I watched a Jayne coaching video a few months ago where he broke down the difference in dps between alt fire and regular shots. It really changed the way I play Zen. I wish Overwatch did more to give you that kind of information in game.
Finally someone saying "I don't mind you playing zen even though the team comp isn't the best for him". And that someone is A COACH. I always get trashed in comp for playing zen and he's my main... Even yesterday I swapped to zen because I saw the enemy team chose a zarya later in the first round and the whole team screamed at me that I didn't do sh!t even though I transcended when zarya's grav went in and saved like 4-5 people. Sry for ranting still sad about that. Thanks Sty for making me a zen main feel validated doe.

Bap is great but doesn't have the kill potential zen has with discord, if you discord and the team follows up with your targets they're dead. Good teams will also bait and target immortality you saw it in the video Immortality doesn't stop the blossom tranc does.
I mean both orbs should always be on someone. I tried to write my prioriy down but that's not easy at all. :) I prioritize tanks but a tank with 90% hp doesn't need the orb as much as the dps/heal that's going to die. The only people I give the heal orb at full hp are usually tanks about to go in or flankers like Tracer or Genji Most of the time I rotate the orb on whatever teammate is being targeted atm
I’m a 3600 current support player and my most played in order are Moira-Ana-Zen so I know some zen, I would recommend looking around to see smaller fights like 1v1s, if you can give your teammate the orb and the enemy discord they will likely win that fight because it makes a big difference on smaller targets in duels. Keeping it on a rein will give you heal stat but if your looking to make plays keep looking around for these duels so you can swing them in your teammates favor.
This Zen is killing me. Watching his DPS die in front of him over and over while he's charging. I like to play behind the DPS and use them like a scope for the Discord. Whomever they are shooting at I target. Works great with Roadhog. Discord as they hook someone and fire away as they get drawn in can just about kill a tank if RH can hit his whole combo

Katsuyu i play tank (mix of console/pc) and i feel like the others dont push and when they do its all fucked up. its probably because nobody uses voice tho, its so shit that you cant even hear game chat if you are talking to friends.
The Transcendence usage wasn't even that bad. The really horrible part was them just not putting harmony orb on people, and also forgetting that left click exists

What support do you like best when you have a miserable tank lineup? Does it vary if you’ll be attacking a point vs defending a payload? I like to play Mercy, but my takeaway from this video is when I get stuck with Ball and dVa maybe I need to change it up.
Also you should always pay attention to second healer as zen. On your own you cant dish out much healing across the team in a fight, so making sure other healer is always full hp keeping everyone alive can be huge
As a Zen main on console, the one thing that kept getting me was the lack of Discord orbs this guy was putting out. That should always be out on anybody. The charges were a little irking but I thought his Ult use wasn't too bad. The Winston moment was a little bad but other then that I thought he was ok! I'm no God Zen by any means but just wanted to put my 2cents. Great vid bro!
Another thing about Alt Fire that Zen players need to realize is that you can't place your healing or discord orbs while charging. There are times where you can just save a teammate and fight by just having the ability to put those orbs on a flank 1v1
stop playing! brig and moira, they are the most annoying heroes! If you want to be the most annoying player in a game, play brig. otherwise you can play moira but you dont need any skill for moira.

Discord can't be placed while charging alternate fire which I think is the biggest issue. Discord should always be on someone. Let your DPS do their job by getting value off your orbs.
I do want to acknowledge the fact that Sty more often than not uses the terms "we" and "us" while viewing footage as he breaks things down for people to learn. Honestly it's super overlooked as how small changes like that drastically affect how things are said and taken. "We shouldn't be here" "We could've done better" and not "You need to do better" and such. Guy really is a treasure trove of knowledge and just good times watching his videos both old and new.

Hey Sty you touch on a subject that I’d really love to hear more discussion around. You talk about how sometimes the team comp is the source of failure and you also touch on focusing your main but also swapping hero’s when ya don’t fit the comp. I guess as someone who yo-yo’s in silver and gold I feel discouraged after 10 losses in a row. I’m totally on board with fix my mistakes and I’ve tried fixing my positioning, use of natural cover, ult economy, etc. I just don’t see how to be the one man army to carry my team so they’re mistakes don’t matter to my personal climbing
Sty you start charging at 2.6 at the start of the round because it takes 2.5 seconds to charge to 5 orbs. If you start at 4 or higher, by the time you fully charge and release the doors might not be fully open yet.
I think a lot of supports have stopped trusting their other supports because a lot of supports have turned to just dps and it’s annoying to trust ur healer and die anyway so we just try to do whatever we can do keep the team alive
In the next overanalyzed can you turn the volume of the game up just a little please? I can't hear the sound queues for all the abilities unless I turn the volume up enough for my roommate to hear Sty yelling lol

The best advice you can often give Zen...is to swap off Zen. Isn't it about time they finally gave him some more survivability or changed his silly head hitbox. Before Moira/Brig existed he felt ok to play, these days picking him feels damn near like throwing.

Good gawd the charge shots hurt my soul so much. WAY WAY WAY too many. They're only for the burst dmg when you have time. Slow to discord, slow to shift healing orb--and a lot of that because you don't want to stop charging your secondary fire. Primary fire does do more per shot than secondary fire. Didn't hear that mentioned.
Me and my mates started playing again for the first time since 2016. We play 6 stack most nights, it’s good fun but they always laugh at me when I say we need a main tank and roadhog sigma isn’t helping much when everyone else gets blitzed.
road hog sigma is not the best combo no. but it can work without any problems. dva would have been a better pick. i have had tons of games with a sigma and hog and we still won. so it depends on who plays any of those heroes and what there skills are.
I disagree on the 2nd point of the 1st round when Sty said the result would’ve been the same. First, he needs to learn how to cancel his alt fire with melee. Second, he was too busy charging his alt to trans and save his Rein who had earth shatter and could’ve possibly won that fight.
Hey Sty I’m a huge fan and have been using your videos as a sort of selection process trying to figure out what characters I’d like to learn. I’m rather new to the game and don’t feel ready for competitive yet. So far I’ve tried out almost every character and have tried to find at least two characters in each role so I can always have a character I’m fairly comfortable playing. This player got lucky the enemy team didn't clue onto the fact there was no barrier. Grav followed by Ana nade cancels tranc, unless DVA was god tier and ate every grav or nade coming into the grav beat would have been safer.
he's a zen main and doesn't know that..... 26:20 also honestly.. looking at this footage, he could've carried HARD if he had actually hit 50% of his shots. No one was jumping him, every time he died it was because of dumb positioning or just end of a lost fight. He had free rein over the entire enemy team almost ALL THE TIME, all that charging alt fire was sooooo fucking annoying, he could've killed hundreds if he was just using discord and shooting at the enemy in 99% of that match. Such a waste of Zen's potential in all this... in the end they won, but it was hard to watch
Hey Stylosa, I play at plat on dps but I know one of the main things holding me back is getting nervous and essentially "throw" when mercy damage boost me, Ana nanos me or even getting a pocket healer. Do you have a way to get over the immense feeling of pressure in these situations.

@@valentinomunoz9687 ignore the boost or train the mental fortitude to keep your performance up even when your damage output is boosted. Something you see in players in master rank or lower is that they seem to think damage boost warrants mispositioning. Do not stop thinking about correct positioning and movement when you get nano or damage boost. Nanoboost does reduce the damage you take but being able to stay focused when you're under pressure or boosted is important to consistently being a good player

When Zen made this decision he was down about a third of his health and you see only seconds afterwards Moira then then tosses her damage orb on to the point. If Zen had of instead retreated directly back towards his team then Moira could have maintained her beam and would have followed up with orb which mostly likely would have resulted in Zen's death unless the Ana made a shoe string catch. Sure it was an undesirable position but the player realised this and immediately corrected as soon as the danger of orb was out of the way. The way Zen played this may well have been the right way to go.
this makes me think that i'm a far better zen player than i thought, i just don't have a team that can protect me during the moments i can't protect myself
If that happens way too often you might want to check if you are making a lot of positioning mistakes, being caught off away from your team or not being close enough to tanks.
Tru. There's alot of crucial moments where zen 100% needs to be looked after. I have like 600+ hours on him and I'd say I play him well but honestly I do way better when I'm on any other support and am paired with a zen. Simply because I know the moments when he's gonna be focused and I know how to keep him alive. Alot of support players or even dps players don't ever pay any attention to zen and he gets picked off easily because no one helped him. Honestly when you have a zen, and he's actually good lol, it's pretty much protect the president.
I’d like for you to coach me please but I don’t get which link you’re referring too I did placements. I would sometimes carry in my placements but I always get placed low because I have bad match ups sometimes my teammates don’t know how to go against some other heroes. Me I think my problem would be positioning and which are more of the important picks if enemy team are huddle up together. I main sombra, Mccree sometimes pharra and reaper or if my team request certain characters I’d switch and try my best to be a team player.

I honestly think Stylosa had to tell him that he should use much more the harmony orb, people are dying in front of him and he does not care, he does not cancel the animation of the secondary fire. And as Stylosa said, please use the primary fire more. I just want to help, don't get this in the wrong way, peace!

I'm surprised you didn't harp him more about his harmonies. I've played a lot of zen and that's what irked me most.
The best advice you can often give Zen...is to swap off Zen. Isn't it about time they finally gave him some more survivability or changed his silly head hitbox. Before Moira/Brig existed he felt ok to play, these days picking him feels damn near like throwing.

I am not saying he does not have value but you can't apply that value from the god damn spawn room. Take this guy his positioning isn't even that bad but he is dying all the time. Zen used to be my main support, these days i hardly ever pick him.

Good gawd the charge shots hurt my soul so much. WAY WAY WAY too many. They're only for the burst dmg when you have time. Slow to discord, slow to shift healing orb--and a lot of that because you don't want to stop charging your secondary fire. Primary fire does do more per shot than secondary fire. Didn't hear that mentioned.
zen players dont understand that ur defense is his damage he has the highest damage output out of all the healers and even some dps

i went on a 10 game win streak solo queueing and none of my games had a shield tank so shield in low ranks isnt apparently needed most of the time
Me and my mates started playing again for the first time since 2016. We play 6 stack most nights, it’s good fun but they always laugh at me when I say we need a main tank and roadhog sigma isn’t helping much when everyone else gets blitzed.
road hog sigma is not the best combo no. but it can work without any problems. dva would have been a better pick. i have had tons of games with a sigma and hog and we still won. so it depends on who plays any of those heroes and what there skills are.
I disagree on the 2nd point of the 1st round when Sty said the result would’ve been the same. First, he needs to learn how to cancel his alt fire with melee. Second, he was too busy charging his alt to trans and save his Rein who had earth shatter and could’ve possibly won that fight.

Hey Sty I’m a huge fan and have been using your videos as a sort of selection process trying to figure out what characters I’d like to learn. I’m rather new to the game and don’t feel ready for competitive yet. So far I’ve tried out almost every character and have tried to find at least two characters in each role so I can always have a character I’m fairly comfortable playing. My favorites are Zen for support, Junkrat for dps, and Reinheart for tank. What are your thoughts and who should I try playing next?

This player got lucky the enemy team didn't clue onto the fact there was no barrier. Grav followed by Ana nade cancels tranc, unless DVA was god tier and ate every grav or nade coming into the grav beat would have been safer.
He needs to stop spamming alt fire with 1 or two orbs. I don't even want to know how little DPS he did that game...

also honestly.. looking at this footage, he could've carried HARD if he had actually hit 50% of his shots. No one was jumping him, every time he died it was because of dumb positioning or just end of a lost fight. He had free rein over the entire enemy team almost ALL THE TIME, all that charging alt fire was sooooo fucking annoying, he could've killed hundreds if he was just using discord and shooting at the enemy in 99% of that match. Such a waste of Zen's potential in all this... in the end they won, but it was hard to watch

Hey Stylosa, I play at plat on dps but I know one of the main things holding me back is getting nervous and essentially "throw" when mercy damage boost me, Ana nanos me or even getting a pocket healer. Do you have a way to get over the immense feeling of pressure in these situations.
PS. I know this sounds "oh woah is me", and maybe braggy or whatever but, this is a legitimate problem that I have so if you could help me out it would be appreciated
@@valentinomunoz9687 ignore the boost or train the mental fortitude to keep your performance up even when your damage output is boosted. Something you see in players in master rank or lower is that they seem to think damage boost warrants mispositioning. Do not stop thinking about correct positioning and movement when you get nano or damage boost. Nanoboost does reduce the damage you take but being able to stay focused when you're under pressure or boosted is important to consistently being a good player

When Zen made this decision he was down about a third of his health and you see only seconds afterwards Moira then then tosses her damage orb on to the point. If Zen had of instead retreated directly back towards his team then Moira could have maintained her beam and would have followed up with orb which mostly likely would have resulted in Zen's death unless the Ana made a shoe string catch. Sure it was an undesirable position but the player realised this and immediately corrected as soon as the danger of orb was out of the way. The way Zen played this may well have been the right way to go.

If that happens way too often you might want to check if you are making a lot of positioning mistakes, being caught off away from your team or not being close enough to tanks.
Tru. There's alot of crucial moments where zen 100% needs to be looked after. I have like 600+ hours on him and I'd say I play him well but honestly I do way better when I'm on any other support and am paired with a zen. Simply because I know the moments when he's gonna be focused and I know how to keep him alive. Alot of support players or even dps players don't ever pay any attention to zen and he gets picked off easily because no one helped him. Honestly when you have a zen, and he's actually good lol, it's pretty much protect the president.

I’d like for you to coach me please but I don’t get which link you’re referring too I did placements. I would sometimes carry in my placements but I always get placed low because I have bad match ups sometimes my teammates don’t know how to go against some other heroes. Me I think my problem would be positioning and which are more of the important picks if enemy team are huddle up together. I main sombra, Mccree sometimes pharra and reaper or if my team request certain characters I’d switch and try my best to be a team player.
Can you do a plat-master genji next? Haven’t covered him in awhile, and with the new buffs more people will be playing him. Thanks sty!
