      Tbh I think I’d notice the 120hz, USB-C, brighter screen or Dynamic Island coming from an older iPhone 11/12PM more than I would the cameras.
      Gone are the days where the XS and 11 Pro were night and day different in a single generation, like with the introduction of Night Mode/Deep Fusion/Ultrawide.

    Wow Brian, you are totally keeping it real. I feel like you're one of the VERY few tech reviewers that try to reign in that 'novelty' feeling of having a new phone. It's so easy to get caught up in new features and whiz-bang baubles... Apple had come close perfection working on that 12MP sensor for so many years... that iPhone 13 really is the pinnacle of that camera system. It takes a few years to REALLY see the benefits of the 48MP sensor... and we're starting to see close to parity, but wow that 13 Pro... chef's kiss.
    This reminds me of when car manufacturers bring out an all-new design once they'd worked out the kinks in the old one.

  • @michaelbakhtiar9256
    @michaelbakhtiar9256 7 месяцев назад +17

    This was excellent thank you!! As a 13pro user, I greatly appreciate this direct comp. What seems to be a trend to me is “designer’s choice” for each model. Meaning: it’s not just about technology improvements, but also based on Product Managers’ design output preferences. I am speculating here, though camera outputs are reminding me of auto designs, which are heavily influenced by that current design chief.

    • @shortakes4k
      @shortakes4k 2 месяца назад

      Yes. He didn't mention the difference in focal length (from 26 mm to 24 mm), which is not good for people's faces, not clearly visible in this video, but easy to test in a store. HDR 5 makes everything worse and you can't turn It off. It seems the Product´s Managers is tweaking cameras for landscapes, buildings and the like. Not my main use with smartphones.

  • @MrPsakamoto

    Love the spec table at 11:16 or so. It has the actual pixel sizes in microns. It shows a big jump at iPhone 13pro from 1 micron to 1.4. When coupled with the big aperture (f1.5), this explains the HUGE jump in low light performance for the 13pro and also why it stays competitive for IQ with later phones that have about the same size pixel but smaller max aperture. If you added the physical sensor sizes as well this would be the totally definitive chart of iPhone optical physics (or at least as much as I can digest)😊. Anyways, this all completely explains to me why I have felt no camera envy since getting my 13pro a couple years ago. Thanks!

    • @aviationenthusiast3060
      @aviationenthusiast3060 7 месяцев назад +11

      Umm...the chart clearly showed sensor sizes. 1/1.7" for iPhone 13 Pro, 1/1.28" for 14 Pro and 15 Pro. Now this is what people don't get: the lower f-stop number combined with a smaller sensor in the 13 Pro "cancel" each other out. The f1.5 on the 13 Pro is not comparable to the f1.78 on the newer phones, because their sensor is bigger. The f number is always in relation to the sensor size.
      The two newest iPhones have a 48mpix main camera. At 12 megapixels, the pixel size is 2.44 microns. Much more than the 13 Pro's 1.9 microns. This means the newest iPhones have better light gathering abilities despite f1.5 sounding better than f1.78.

    • @MrPsakamoto
      @MrPsakamoto 7 месяцев назад +6

      @aviationenthusiast3060, Good catch - missed the sensor ratio size reference - my bad. Nonetheless, for individual pixel light sensitivity, given the same underlying semiconductor tech - the area of the individual pixel is proportional to performance. Your 2.44 micron pixel dimension is for the quad pixel mode of the 48 megapixel sensors. This works quite well and can do some things that the 13 pro sensor cannot, but remember all I was pointing out is that the decent size of the individual 13 pro pixel is likely the reason it is comparable with the new cameras at all in low light. Not as good as a 15 pro, but in the ballpark.

    • @aviationenthusiast3060
      @aviationenthusiast3060 7 месяцев назад +6

      @@MrPsakamoto Yeah, you're right. It just that it seems some people don't understand the relativity between f-stop and sensor size and thus thinking the 13 Pro would have a better camera. You know I was talking about crop factor - the sensor compared to a full frame camera. Now the iPhone 13 Pro main camera has a crop factor of ~4.6, 14&15 Pro 3.5. Now f1.5x4.6=f6.9 versus f1.78x3.5=f6.23
      This means the iPhone 13 Pro has a full frame equivalent of a 26mm f6.9 lense, whilst the newer iPhones measuring at 24mm f6.2. Of course this is not a perfect comparison because full frame lenses are of higher quality than the tiny iPhone lenses but the performance would be at least theoretically the same.

      You're right, but look at the results. The 13 Pro still has a little more pop that is natural. I'm sure it will be another generation or two when the really optimize this sensor.

      @@Petra.wa3 I would say they are pretty close, now that both phones are now in the “used” category it really would depend on your budget and what the phones are going for. Great video, Brian. A note about the aperture. Yes, the 13Pro has the lowest number, however, it requires more light because the sensor is also a little smaller than the 14 and 15pros. So those phones will capture more detail, at a similar brightness, than the 13P, despite them having a higher aperture. I bought a 13P last black friday over the 14P because I preferred Apple's processing on the 13P. I also GREATLY prefer the 26mm over 24mm lens. It's more natural and has less distortion and stretching around the edges of the frame. The 13P largely seemed less over-sharpened compared to the 14P. The dynamic distraction isn't an upgrade for me- as it cuts into the screen a couple of millimeters more than the notch.. for sake of what? having to reach all the way up to tap stuff at the top of the screen instead of keeping my hands where they are at the bottom/middle? Nah, I'm good. The 15P is MUCH more appealing than the 14P because you can use the 24 or 48 megapixels without having to shoot in pro raw. And also being able to shoot in 24mpxl instead of either 12 or 48, for a nice sensible compromise. The low light performance is also another tiny step better, as the 14 was over the 13.. 2 tiny steps now make for a slightly less tiny step lol.
    This year more than ever, the regular 15 holds it's own as actually potentially being a worthwhile buy even for pics. The 48mpxl sensor allows for what's basically a 2x optical zoom-- which bridges the gap to what we're used to with the 3x zoom. Most of the Pro features on the 15Pro 99.5% of buyers will touch maybe once/year.

    • @mootsym
      @mootsym 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@user-qz2eo4ck3s depends on price. Black Friday has some great deals for the 14 and 15, but the 13 won't be available new anymore. So if you want new, you may have to get a 14 or 15. The Pixel 6a isn't a bad phone. But if you need to swap, any of the iphones are great. I think the 13pro is solid. Only thing it doesn't have compared to 14pro is action mode for taking stable video when you're running or something. Also doesn't have 48mp pro raw mode for clearer images that you'll really only notice on a larger screen. The 15P gives us 24 and 48mp HEIF files, which is great cuz it doesn't take up as much space as pro raw pics on the 14p. But again, your really only noticing these differences on a larger screen. The 16p may give us a 48mp ultrawide and better battery, and better focusing in the iphone camera app (something the 15P has had some issues with, especially with a crummy minimal focus distance for the main lens where it's forced into macro mode). If you're a casual user, the 13P is great. I know the last 2 years, Walmart has had epic sales.. like a $400 or $300 walmart gift card when you buy an iphone pro.

    Great job Brian. It's refreshing to see people not jump on the "upgrade-every-year" wagon. I have 12 pro max, and for the nature photography I use a real pro camera because even 15's images start to fall apart on a 27" Mac screen. Also, low light photography can be challenging with smartphones.

    Excellent work. I've taken the 13pro on trips. It only has 2 faults. It can't compete with a TZ80 600mm zoom or any of my big camera zooms, obviously. But it also can't compete with photos of lots of trees, bushes etc because of the lack of definition. Leaves become like a rough oil painting, but anywhere that has decent edge definition works fine on the phone. I would love to see the difference when taking photos of trees with the 15 pro @ 48 mp and 13 pro. For someone who upgrades every 2 years this was a very useful comparison. Thanks...

    I had the 13 Pro and upgraded to the 15 pro max. The 13 pro took great photos with the main sensor (the other two were just OK) but it wasn’t without its faults. Being just 12 MP it could make very detailed scenes look over sharpened sometimes and also I think that large aperture might have been an issue when it comes to dynamic range. It wasn’t bad but sometimes you could get the background blown out if your foreground was a bit darker. The 15 Pro Max has been a delight so far. The photos look very similar in terms of the colour science, Apple always targets true to life reproduction, but the detail and clarity is next level, especially with the 24MP resolution, and the dynamic range is insane. The telephoto camera is definitely a step up as well, not just for zoom distance but also light capture in darker scenes and especially stabilisation. Taking video on the 5x camera is fantastic. I still think the ultra wide isn’t the best but it still takes pretty good photos. I generally default to the main lens or the telephoto though and I generally only use the ultra wide for macro photos (I photographed a ladybug earlier today). Also the 48MP HEIF MAX mode steps it up a notch in terms of detail when you really want an ultra crisp photo but don’t want the crazy file size of a RAW photo (I have used this for photos of my cat and you can see every little strand of fur and the details in her eyes). So yeah, the 13 Pro camera is very good, and that’s why I gave it to my girlfriend who had a Note 10+ that took mediocre photos, but the 15 Pro Max is a pretty noticeable jump up in quality in my opinion.

    Hey Brian! 🙂 Hope you're doing great! Great revealing video! Missed this when it was uploaded. And as it turns out I think the same day I bought a 512GB iPhone 14 Pro Max to upgrade my 1TB iPhone 13 Pro Max which I just sold a few days ago. While my 13 Pro Max was waiting for a buyer I seriously asked myself if I should just keep it instead of upgrading. As you noted it takes such great bright photos which I really like, and video too. Didn't really care about the dynamic island or the action mode on videos, but did like that the 14 Pro Max has a brighter screen which seemed like that would help when taking photos and shooting videos outdoors in bright light. And it obviously has the 48MP sensor, and the 4K cinematic mode. My strategy each year is to upgrade to the current one just when the newest one comes out. Save a lot of money by doing that. Both the 13 Pro Max and the 14 Pro Max I bought for $950, down from $1599 and $1399 a few days before I bought them. The 13 Pro Max was brand new, and the 14 Pro Max looks brand new, has 98% battery health, and a year left of AppleCare+ Theft and Loss. And I sold my 13 Pro Max for $875.
    I may upgrade to the 15 Pro Max in a few months as some become available at a decent discount. Or wait for the 16 Pro Max. I thought if I held on to my 13 Pro Max longer it would be harder to get a decent price for it as a lot of people don't realize what a great phone it is.

    12 Pro is the last and best "natural" phone camera left on the lineup, 13 Pro onwards Apple upped the AI and added so much 'tech' into the photos. Great for some detailing shots, but for casual mobile street photography look and feel, probably not so good. I think the Night mode itself is the most important thing for mobile phone. Even for digital camera we always look for the best sensor camera to achieve that. the 15 Pro Max zoom is really good, perfect for travelling actually!

    I am upgrading from an iPhone 13 Pro to an iPhone 15 Pro. I often need to take photos of wall hangings / maps / quilts and then need to zoom into the photo later to see the detail and writing . This is only possible on the iPhone 14 Pro and 15 Pro, due to the addition of the 48MP camera. Further, the iPhone 15 Pro makes it much easier to take advantage of the 48MP modes and utilizes a 24MP default mode that also provides the detail without the file size. Thanks for the comparison of all of these phones. It’s apparent that they are all very good and that technology is continually improving, albeit slightly with each update. For me, the addition of the programmable action button is on of the nicer features for the 15 Pro. I often miss photos trying to get to the camera function and this will help a lot. The other feature is the 2000 nit screen (vs 1200 nit on the iPhone 13 Pro). I often take photos outdoors and often have trouble seeing the screen in bright sunlight and this should help as well. I also almost never take portrait photos of people, though I should, and the ability to convert a regular photo to portrait on the 15 Pro is another nice feature.
