Just like Brandon, I am impressed with Jonathan’s knowledge of Apple products that he just knows off the top of his head (like when he mentioned the color filter being added on iOS 7, not specifically the 5s).
That shot of all the iPhones centred on their cameras was so well done it actually brought a smile to my face. Last time a shot made me smile just from how well composed it is was Dune.
My dad has a 11Pro and will be upgrading soon. He had taken a picture on his germany trip on his 4S years ago and still is his wallpaper and you cannot tell it was taken on a 4S. When I told people about it they would get shocked and be like no way. But the photo still has the timestamp and other meta data to prove it. It was an AMAZING phone too.
The camera on my iPhone 13 Pro in general takes nice photos but sometimes they are just too oversharpened. It is especially noticable when there is lots of fine detail like leaves on a tree or grass. I had a Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and while the camera was not as consistent at capturing realistic looking photos, when it did take a good photo it was phenomenal. Really just beautiful photos. I still have a bunch of photos that I took on that phone and even to this day I look back at them and reminisce. The iPhone camera is good, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra camera is phenomenal if a little less consistent. Hopefully Apple will significantly improve their cameras in the iPhone 15 Pro.
13:42 I was shooting a lot of Cinematic Mode footage at Ultra and by far the best part about cinematic/portrait mode is the fact that the blur is applied post-noise, so you get a much cleaner low light image. With the right cut pacing, stuff I got with the iPhone looked basically as good as some of the event footage Ultra has put out later
I’ve been disappointed with the overprocessing in the newer iPhones. Raw helps, but the whole point of a phone camera is to be fast and convenient, if I have to have a whole raw workflow I might as well use a dedicated camera. I’ve been seriously considering getting an 8 Plus or X. They had a weird proto-SmartHDR that sometimes messed up bad, but for the most part looked really good without much signs of overprocessing. And the raw files I got from those were still incredible, it had a unique noise profile which I swear looked almost like grain at lower ISOs and with how sharp the 2x lens was in good light there was so much detail that I cropped some shots from landscape to portrait and vice versa and they still looked awesome on a large display!
NGL, I'm surprised how good that 4S is nearly 12 years later. If you posted that to Instagram or other social media today, I don't think you could tell that much difference for the daylight photo of the building. That was my first ever iPhone I bought with my own money too. :)
Portrait Mode isn’t as good as it is when you’re trying to get a quick shot or something/someone. I’ve learned that from watching this video. Hope we can get more like this. Really found of the iPhone camera and what it can do. It’s very impressive to see how much it has changed over the years. Thank you so much! 💙
Yeah unless you wanna sit there for like 5 minutes setting up the camera to take a nice portrait mode shot the normal camera is the way to go if you’re in a hurry
Not zooming, but the way Apple has implemented this feature using the multitouch display. Before this technology gesture navigation was something very few have ever seen.
As a photographer I recall sometime around the iPhone 11 being impressed with how far camera phones had come and hoping that it could one day actually replace my (at the time) DSLR. I'm not sure if it's how much better "real" cameras have gotten in the time since, or this overreliance on AI sharpening and scene detection but I find myself using my phone's camera less today than ever. If I want to take a good picture, I get my real camera. Most of my phone's camera roll is just random pictures of part numbers/things I need to remember and very little actual photography. Here's hoping this is something that gets course corrected and we can get back to seeing these phone cameras used to their full potential. Those iphone 14 pro prores shots look really nice.
Just need to point out that first Nokia with a camera came out in 2002, a few months (60 or so) before the original iPhone. In 2005 they had 3MP cameras, and in 2007 5MP. They also had video recording a bit before iPhone 3GS (2003)
I got a 13 mini after my 8 Plus and I just don’t like the new camera as much! My two main complaints come from the fact that it feels like I have to be farther away from what I’m shooting for the subject to be in focus if I’m doing some kind of close up, and I actually really liked using the telephoto camera much more than the ultra wide one.
When I switched from my iPhone 6 to the second gen SE, I also noticed that I have to move the phone further away in order for the subject to be in focus. Sometimes this is really annoying, but the overall picture quality has improved compared to the 6.
Honestly I thought I would use the ultrawide way more than I actually use. They know people like the telephoto more and that’s why it’s behind the “pro” paywall. I don’t think anyone would buy a pro if its differential was a ultrawide camera.
@@lucasgomes6096 If only all the cameras were actually equally good I'd use them more. That's kind of the problem with _all_ multiple camera setup phones. My favorite Mac Address so far. There's a certain documentary feel to it and I absolutely loved it. Can we get something like this for cameras on LTT? Like comparing Nikon gens or something?
Brandon nails it! It is amazing how far the camera on iPhones (and phones in general) have advanced. Still, over processing, and unreliability of portrait modes are too common. Still, your average user doesn't care or notice (not judging), yet it is great that these devices allow us to capture the moment anywhere and anytime. If Apple releases an iPhone with expandable storage (like a camera), I would seriously consider switching back to iOS. My only iPhone was an iPhone 4. Still have it in its original box.
I found it interesting to see that through no planning on my part, over the years I’ve upgraded through some of the most significant iPhone camera upgrades. 4s > 7 Plus > 12 Pro
@@CreativeMindsAudio That would be a tempting upgrade all on its own! Same here I just upgrade when my phones are on that threshold where battery and some other things are already going. Hoping I can keep this one another 2-3 years at least but fingers crossed the lightning port isn’t here that long…
@@humancannonball3827 Yeah this current phone is on over 3 years (got it in october 2019) making it almost the longest modern phone i've ever had (longest is 3.5 years). And it's still going strong too! Battery is only starting to show signs of wear (despite it saying 100% battery health). But it is minor still only need to charge it once a day unless i'm actively using it then twice. But nothing where with my 6s i had to charge it morning (after using it in bed) and night. sometimes even once at work if i used it regularly. I'd say this 11 pro is a great one. I have yet to see anything in the latest models that i feel like i must have. even though the camera improvements are cool, I don't take pictures often with my phone (i have a mirrorless camera).
Every new Mac Address video just cements how the production of this channel is just leagues ahead of the sister channels. (The other channels are also great) It's a refreshing change of pace where the Mac Address team and their extremely vast amount of autonomy can create videos with the aim of Quality over Quantity with every single clip showing that.
LOL cameras on phones were PLENTY common by the time the iPhone came out. The fact that the first iPhone was incapable of MMS was a big issue because cameras on phones and the ability to share the photos taken with said cameras was already ubiquitous in 2007
I have always loved my XS, I think it did better than my 12 Pro, but having the ultra wide option on the Pro, and the telephoto, is amazing. I’m always getting the Pro models because they have more camera options, and I take a lot, A LOT, of pictures on it.
I remember waiting in line for the 4S all night only to find out they didn't have the combination I wanted so I left without buying a phone. In the end when the version I wanted became available I was floored with the 4S camera and how good it was. Between it and my Galaxy Note 2 I don't think I've ever had a better phone camera.
I love the video. Something about those old cameras makes the photos feel like they’re from a different time. However I have to disagree with Brandon’s statement that cameras in phones weren’t common in 2007. Cameras in phones were plenty common back then. True, most of them sucked, but there were amazing cameras for the time, like in Nokia N95 with the 5Mpx sensor. Half a year before iPhone came to be. And unlike iPhone, even the bad phone cameras of the time could capture video. iPhone just didn’t prioritise camera because it would mean that for the technology of the time, they’d need to make the phone way thicker. They just waited until the technology became more usable for their form factor.
I love that this video shows how technical Brandon is! I’m more of a conceptual photographer and love imperfections! That 3Gs stuff at the beginning was so interesting to me. Camera tech is so cool and early digital cameras having this renaissance brings out cool work!
I remember being so impressed by the iPhone 4s camera when it was launched. Hell, I was impressed with the 4. I think for normal pictures though, I still prefer the 8/X generation.
Yes in some ways I prefer the 8 plus over my new iPhone 14 pro The regular point and shoot non raw the 14 is good but they have to tone down the photogenic stuff..I was able to compare them and the 8 plus looks more natural ..how we actually see what we are taking a picture of
The shots from the iPhone debut presentation gave me a video idea for this channel. A retrospective on Apple's place in computing history, with a specific focus on two key historical events. 1) "The Mother of All Demos", in which many of the things that some people wrongly attribute to Apple were introduced far before Apple even existed, but which Apple later introduced into actual consumer products for one of the first times (if not *the* first time). 2) That iPhone event, where Steve Jobs essentially gave "The Mother of All Demos" for smartphones, and *actually* caused Apple to change computing history effectively by themselves. I think the major discussion topics would be just how colossally important these two developments were for how people live in the information age, and how even if they hadn't happened, someone would have done them soon enough.
Phones had cameras since the Nokia brick days. I remember seeing the new iPhone when it came out and thinking my phone already had a decent 5mp camera(it might have been 8) and I couldn't make that much of a downgrade as that was the most important feature. It's a given that phones can sent txt and make calls at that point. Make sure you use correct info in your videos.
Seconded! There was a full on race for the most megapixels. Camera phones were a huge marketing thing back then. The N95 had a cracking Zeiss lens system too. “Camera’s weren’t even common on phones at that point” simply not true.
Yeah, when the first iPhone came out most phones already had a camera. The camera on the iPhone was years behind what everyone else had, and it took years for Apple to match them.
Absolutely, I’ve noticed that a lot of tech reviewers brush over the cellphone development before the IPhone announcement. While before that there were already many years of smartphones and cameraphones, some of which were pretty common.
the 11-13 is tricky at a distance but it’s easy because small triple lens: 11 pro, medium triple lens: 12 Pro, big triple lens: 13 Pro, JUMBO triple lens: 14 Pro 🤣
This is THE Apple channel to go to and Jonathan never lets me down! I've had them all for the first to the latest and the cameras are the reason why almost all the time. They went from good enough to absolutely amazing, and it's mainly because of the great Apple silicon getting better all the time.
I remember getting my first Iphone, it was a 4. The pictures I took on a trip to Hawaii with it are still some of the best photos I think I've ever taken. Something about it made it really easy to point and shoot. Sure could be done better now but I don't ever find myself thinking of taking so many photos like I did back then when it was still novel
For the time the original iPhone had a great camera despite its low megapixel count. I jumped on the phone camera wagon back in 2002/03 with the Nokia 7250 and then moved to the Sony phones which had “great cameras”. Those photos haven’t aged well however, the original iPhone photos still look good to me now.
out of curiosity, does testing the camera of each phone with the ios version that it came out with affect the results compared to using the said iphone version latest supported ios version since software processing is a thing? would this be a weird variable to all this?
It would be difficult to get the exact first version of IOS on each phones since you can't downgrade IOS, it would not differ so much that it can make a huge impact. There a few instances that it could affect the processing, but you need to know the logs of each update to know if they've added processing info on that update.
I'd wager it wouldn't matter because once Apple create a phone and tout it's camera capabilities they stick with it's processing and colour temp until the next hardware refresh.
This confirms it. I upgraded to the regular 14 from the XR. I don't like the oversharpening effect on the 14, and this was immediately what I noticed when I first took photos on the 14. The color is also a bit cold. I much prefer the naturalness of the XR. I really do hope Apple releases an update to fix these. I've tried the different "photographic styles" on the 14 to see if there is a style that matches the XR, but no. I don't like that Apple gives too many options because then it makes me feel like I have 4 other photographic outcomes. Just let there be 1 standard one, so people don't have to switch to different styles. Styles can be done in post! Apple is supposed to get rid of complexities, that's what theyre known for. Other people call it boring, but I think it just takes one extra decision away from me, which I really value. But yeah, fix the 14 oversharpening and cold tones. I have to live with this for the next 4-5 years!
Idk what apple did but their ProRAW still looks processed. Idk if there are better ways to shoot RAW on iPhone like a Google Pixel phone. Besides that now we got MotionCam on Android and it's amazing cause you can shoot RAW video even.
I really appreciate that y’all don’t care bout cleaning the dust off from around the lenses Too many tech video channels treat the hardware like they are making advertisements for those products
I have to admit, this is a great idea. I've not been one to really go for the "Best Camera". My main buying points are: screen size (6" or more), at least 64GB of storage, and that's about it. My current phone is an iPhone 13 I've had for almost 1 year. While I have never really been a camera guy, it's still really cool to see how these work and evolve! Keep it up Johnathan!
When iPhone 2G got released you could get Nokia n95 which had decent camera with autofocus and flashlight. I would be more carefull with statement like "phone cameras weren't standard at that time". IPhone was revolutionary at many things but it lacked with its camera behind competition for a long time. I even remember jailbreak apps which you could use to record video on iPhone 2G, 3G. Apple allowed for video recording with iPhone 3Ss. I would call 3Gs the first iPhone with really usable camera.
I’m kind of disappointed they didn’t go through every iPhone like the title says to show all the differences. They jumped from 4S and skipped all the others to the latest ones.
One aspect unrelated since you used an external monitor, but relevant to real life, is that everyone is viewing newer iPhone photos on continuously improving screens. The quality of the screen on the 14 Pro as compared to the 4S likely distorts what we interpret as the quality of the camera. It's good to see how well these older phone cameras hold up in a controlled viewing environment.
Cameras were common on phones back when the iPhone came out, however it was always just a feature of convenience at the time. There was dedicated digital cameras back then that were much better.
Not with the Sony Ericsson K series and Nokia’s N series phones though. Those really packed a punch and outshot some stand-alone digital cameras at the time!
As a friend, who is an award winning cinemaphotographer, put it, "the best camera is the the camera that you have with you". For most people having a camera to capture the moment is the key. There have always been people with weird camera fetishes, like the Polaroid SX-70, so I "get" why someone might use a 3GS, as a kink.
This is the best Mac address I've seen. Do more videos with Brandon! You two balance each other nicely. Maybe every video? It wouldn't be bad, many of these videos seem lonely compared to other LMG vids
There’s a growing trend for younger people who grew up with smartphones to use old digital cameras. It’s similar how digital shooters started to go back to film.
Apple: Releases M2 Pro Laptops and Mac Mini. Mac Address: c a m e r a s. Love it, such a great video concept, and a subject I've always found interesting.
The first iPhone camera was even at the time, nothing to write home about. At the time, Sony had the top tier camera systems used in their Cybershot series of phones (although the cameras in their not quite as high end Walkman phones at least had autofocus and took decent enough pics for the time.) Nokia had the N95 which was up there with Sony's Cybershot phone camera. The iPhone didn't get a camera considered "good" until the iPhone 4. (Yes the 3GS had auto focus finally, but still lagged behind in the lens and sensor dept). And yes Brandon, most phones had cameras on them by 2007, even if most were not good. But I distinctly remember people being disappointed with the iPhones cameras until the iPhone 4, because there were other phones with way better cameras on them
at 11:45, it's not barrel distortion (an effect of the lens geometry), it's called big nose effect (mostly proportional to the distance between the object and the camera). Cheers :)
The 14 Pro definitely looks overwrought in software processing. I'd hope they dial this back and let the larger sensor do its thing, but they never really improve the camera stack after launching an iPhone, so only in the 15 onwards they might
Really fun video! I’d love a follow up where you test the front cameras (from iPhone 4 and onwards). It would be fun to see how much better the selfie camera’s gotten!
10:03 I think you meant to say "much bigger lens", not "much bigger sensor". But oh well, the point is that phone camera's and dedicated cameras are different. Great video.
These comparisons were quite surprising! Would have never expected a 7+ to look nearly identical to the 14 Pro. Also.. I absolutely love the slower and more delicate pacing of the Mac Address videos. Everything feels so well thought out and more cinematic. Keep up the incredible work! We really enjoy and recognize the effort you guys are putting in.
Great and interesting video, wish that the DSL was used as a baseline for every comparison. It is very impressive how good small camera's like that have gotten over just a few years. The first iPhone was released only 16 years ago which is absurd to think about.
I remember the Lumia 920 or 925 demolishing both the iPhone 5, 5S and at least 6 during the 920's first few years (within 1 year of software updates anyway)
I've been a long time LTT fan. I've never seen a MA video but this is great! I didn't even realize it was an LMG video. The style is so different, yet refreshing

nice! i went from a 4s to an 6s to an 11 pro. i'll update again when this thing dies, hopefully when the lightning port is gone.
So true. I really love this channel and I don't own anything apple.
LOL cameras on phones were PLENTY common by the time the iPhone came out. The fact that the first iPhone was incapable of MMS was a big issue because cameras on phones and the ability to share the photos taken with said cameras was already ubiquitous in 2007
the way this is shot and edited is sooooo nice. Feel professional but very cozy at the same time :)
Really enjoyed this. Needs a part 2 testing iPhone's video recording.
I remember being so impressed by the iPhone 4s camera when it was launched. Hell, I was impressed with the 4. I think for normal pictures though, I still prefer the 8/X generation.
Yes in some ways I prefer the 8 plus over my new iPhone 14 pro
The regular point and shoot non raw the 14 is good but they have to tone down the photogenic stuff..I was able to compare them and the 8 plus looks more natural ..how we actually see what we are taking a picture of

Comparing every single Mac Address video - this is probably the best. You and Brandon, talking about cameras and photo quality is match! 🙏
While before that there were already many years of smartphones and cameraphones, some of which were pretty common.
really good video guys. Brandon did a great job as well. I would love to see a follow up video with the two of you doing a deep dive into ProRAW.
That superclamp + grip arm for the umbrella is genius lmao, iykyk
ngl I look more forward to Mac Address videos now than I do LTT, your guys' video quality is insane and Jonathon is a great host
7:35 it’s nice knowing I’m not the only person able to name any iPhone by looking at it lol
the 11-13 is tricky at a distance but it’s easy because small triple lens: 11 pro, medium triple lens: 12 Pro, big triple lens: 13 Pro, JUMBO triple lens: 14 Pro 🤣
I think this is the best video published in this channel so far. Amazing comparison guys!
7:36 I love that little smirk at the end, Jonathan knows hit shit, do not question the master.
This is THE Apple channel to go to and Jonathan never lets me down! I've had them all for the first to the latest and the cameras are the reason why almost all the time. They went from good enough to absolutely amazing, and it's mainly because of the great Apple silicon getting better all the time.
Love seeing an LTT OG getting more screen time. The enthusiasm from Brandon is contagious!
Great episode, Love looking back at past iPhones, comparing what they had and seeing how far we've came!
Upload all the photos to the LTT forum so we can compare them ourselves with as much time as we'd like! That would be really cool!
I'm extremely ignorant about the matter myself but I'd say it could, software does a lot in photography especially in the latest phones
Brandon makes every video better, love what he brings into this one!
2:49 that's a VERY infactual statement!
Oh.. here's another one! 4:03
I was thinking the same thing!
I think he meant first iPhone with video capabilities
Idk what apple did but their ProRAW still looks processed. Idk if there are better ways to shoot RAW on iPhone like a Google Pixel phone. Besides that now we got MotionCam on Android and it's amazing cause you can shoot RAW video even.
I really appreciate that y’all don’t care bout cleaning the dust off from around the lenses
Too many tech video channels treat the hardware like they are making advertisements for those products
I would call 3Gs the first iPhone with really usable camera.
this episode gives me the feeling of watching cbc marketplace. i love it
I’m kind of disappointed they didn’t go through every iPhone like the title says to show all the differences. They jumped from 4S and skipped all the others to the latest ones.
What happend to his hair
One aspect unrelated since you used an external monitor, but relevant to real life, is that everyone is viewing newer iPhone photos on continuously improving screens. The quality of the screen on the 14 Pro as compared to the 4S likely distorts what we interpret as the quality of the camera. It's good to see how well these older phone cameras hold up in a controlled viewing environment.
What happened to your hair?
Cameras were common on phones back when the iPhone came out, however it was always just a feature of convenience at the time. There was dedicated digital cameras back then that were much better.
Not with the Sony Ericsson K series and Nokia’s N series phones though. Those really packed a punch and outshot some stand-alone digital cameras at the time!
What happen to your hair bro
As a friend, who is an award winning cinemaphotographer, put it, "the best camera is the the camera that you have with you". For most people having a camera to capture the moment is the key. There have always been people with weird camera fetishes, like the Polaroid SX-70, so I "get" why someone might use a 3GS, as a kink.

So cool seeing the advancement of technology over the last few decades. Apple really knocked it out of the park with iPhone cameras.
First
This is the best Mac address I've seen.
I like how they glossed over the fact that they got a DVT iPhone 5.
"oh yeah, we got a rare pre-production iPhone 5. No biggies"
But I distinctly remember people being disappointed with the iPhones cameras until the iPhone 4, because there were other phones with way better cameras on them
Glad the big channels are finally calling out overprocessing on the iPhone! Fingers crossed for the next one, cause the XR is not doing so hot anymore
An idea, test some of SonyErricsson's Cyber-Shot cameras on phones from the past. Some of those phones even had real xenon flash
Why Apple doesn't let you use JPEG in 48MP mode is beyond me. I'm sorry but I don't want to fill up 90% of my storage with 48MP ProRaw photos.
Brandon is amazing. I wish he would make his own side channel to review different cameras and photography tips
at 11:45, it's not barrel distortion (an effect of the lens geometry), it's called big nose effect (mostly proportional to the distance between the object and the camera). Cheers :)
The 14 Pro definitely looks overwrought in software processing. I'd hope they dial this back and let the larger sensor do its thing, but they never really improve the camera stack after launching an iPhone, so only in the 15 onwards they might
This is an amazing video. As a photographer and cinematographer, I’d LOVE to see more camera focused content featuring Brandon in the future.
01:05 we all can see Brandon's Curiosity in the camera screen
Such a clever subject to capture. One of my favorites on LTT hands down.
The Pixel 7 Pro RAW photos are a sweet spot for me. They look great, without the iPhone's up-to-100 MB file sizes and ProRAW processing.
"I got addicted..." - there are worse things for a cinematographer to be addicted to, really.
Yesterday I was searching for every iPhone Camera comparison, thanks Brandon
Great and interesting video, wish that the DSL was used as a baseline for every comparison. It is very impressive how good small camera's like that have gotten over just a few years. The first iPhone was released only 16 years ago which is absurd to think about.
I remember the Lumia 920 or 925 demolishing both the iPhone 5, 5S and at least 6 during the 920's first few years (within 1 year of software updates anyway)
The iPhone 4S will forever be THE iPhone. The coolest design, the biggest jump in tech. I love it
I've been a long time LTT fan. I've never seen a MA video but this is great! I didn't even realize it was an LMG video. The style is so different, yet refreshing
I want Brandon's opinion on the insane overprocessing of the Pixel 7 xD
I definitely like the "old phone sensor" look on a Nokia E72 I have, but I don't see it at all on the 3GS.
Can I point out that Brandon is wearing a Save the Duck jacket and this made him the coolest guy at LMG within seconds!
