      @canadafree2087 That's well said, Canada. Also, these tests have a problem- A softer backstop (like flesh) actually reduces penetration through the clothing layer, rather than increasing it. Also, a competent thrower can produce much more penetration with much lighter weapons. I've nearly penetrated a quarter inch of Lexan with a shuriken weighing about 60 GRAMS. 👍👍

    Anyone who has thrown knives successfully for a while, knows how much devastating power is generated, when simply thrown!
    It’s more powerful than a point blank stab. It is no joke!

    • @redfaux74

      It is definitely not more powerful than a stab but I understand your precept. And I agree throwing knives are highly underestimated. It's a game changer in combat if you're accurate.

    • @GiovannaBassani-ve3wm
      @GiovannaBassani-ve3wm 3 месяца назад

      @@redfaux74 it really depends, with a stab you could have a bit of your body weight helping with power, but most of the time, it's just a motion of the arm really, so the much higher velocity of a thrown knife usually gives a slightly higher power than a stab.

    • @redfaux74
      @redfaux74 3 месяца назад

      @GiovannaBassani-ve3wm - When people do not put their weight into a punch, or attack of any kind, they don't know what they're doing. Just because most people don't do it properly, doesn't make it a good rule. It is never good to give half your weapon away. You always attack just past the target.

    • @GiovannaBassani-ve3wm
      @GiovannaBassani-ve3wm 3 месяца назад

      @@redfaux74 yes, i am aware of that, but still, very frequently, a stab and throw are going to have similar power due to the fact you're more than likely not lunging and jumping into your knife, against someone else whenever you stab with it.
      that only applies to heavier knives tho, particularly light knives can't penetrate deeply when thrown because if you multiplicate the speed by the weight, it's still not a lot of energy, and on a stab,, even without putting most of your body weight, the motion and weight of the arm would do most of the job of penetrating deeply.

    • @redfaux74

    Couple of things. First of all that is a throwing knife. I'm not saying you cannot kill someone by throwing a knife at them. What I am saying is even if you are incredibly skilled, your likelyhood of killing someone or even incapacitating them with a thrown knife is small. In the movies every thrown knife burries itself hilt deep in someones chest. And while wood is harder than soft tissue, sternum and rib bones are pretty hard. People may point out that I would not want this guy throwing a knife at me. That is true, but it does not negate my other points.

      No true if you throw a knife vs stab a knife into a material the thrown knife almost always goes deeper a knife thrown to the chest will bury itself and you will die ..it's a risk u take throwing your weapon away but if its hits its devastating

      Knife, throwing in a combative sense should not be over thought. One would obviously not throw their only knife away but from an ambush standpoint knife throwing could be very dangerous. The very same way bushuriken were used back in the day. Even if it was able to set you up for something better, it would be cool. This knife coupd go all the way through a human.

    So,
    The reality of this experiment is..
    If the person stayed absolutely still, the tactical knife would possibly penetrate 1/2 - 3/4in.
    This is not enough damage to stop a trained or drug infested or highly motivated attacker.
    With the addition of movement, nearly any even slight side to side or rotating movement (like running) will definitely disrupt the knife from deep penetration.

    No surprises for myself here. Except you need to give yourself some credit for technique. You mentioned weight, but if the knife didn't hit with it's full capability of sectional density, the results wouldn't have been as impressive. (*full capability of sectional density, did I say that right ?-lol) You have the skills required to achieve the goal. I can make it stick, but not with the power you have. I try to throw hard and it's a crap shoot where it's going to land.
    I threw a couple of my Cold Steel spears at a pesky critter or two. Never hit the target, but managed to hit trees. They only penetrated an inch or less, but I am confident they would have gone completely through a raccoon. They were VERY difficult to remove. Using an arrow as an example... it goes completely through a deer, but only an inch or so into a piece of wood.

    Thanks for the video.
    I've heard of many times in the history of bladed weapon combat where men have received fatal wounds from a spear, a sword, an axe, or some other weapon but have continued to fight for many minutes or even many hours without stopping. One of the most famous was when Sam Houston received an arrow wound deep into his groin. He ordered a fellow soldier to pull the arrow out of his body, and he continued fighting even though this extraction only made the wound worse. I think he got up again the next day and led another charge. In his case, the wounds were not fatal, but the idea is similar.
    I don't see clothing as a big issue in whether or not knife throwing is effective for self-defense. I've heard that some kinds of fabric resist blades better than others, but even that's not the biggest issue.
    The biggest issue is that a blade can penetrate several inches into the human body without stopping someone from continuing to fight. Many attackers will stop as soon as they are badly wounded. Against them, knife throwing could be an effective means of self-defense. Against those who are more motivated or are driven by madness or some kind of intoxication, one serious wound will not cause this kind of psychological stop. The attacker will keep attacking, and he might pull the knife from his body and use it as his own weapon.
    I'm not saying that a thrown knife will never be an effective weapon. I am concerned about the knife not producing a quick stop against an attacker. The Romans made pretty effective use of the plumbata which was just an ancient version of a lawn dart. These were good weapons because they wounded enemy soldiers. Wounded soldiers sometimes do lose morale and stop fighting immediately. Taking out members of an opposing army makes sense even if they are able to keep fighting for many minutes or even an hour or two. I'm just less certain that this idea will be effective at keeping a defender alive in many modern, self-defense situations.

      The same argument can be made against guns. People have been shot many times and continued to fight. Knives have been very lethal. As with bullets, the target has much to do with the lethality.

    • @VTPSTTU
      @VTPSTTU 4 месяца назад +1

      @@willieboy3011 Bullets do not always cause instant stops on attackers, but they have a much better chance of causing instant or near-instant stops. A bullet has much more energy than a thrown knife does. A bullet is more likely to penetrate deeper. While penetration is seen as more important than the size of the temporary expansion cavity, the huge expansion cavity represents a huge release of energy into an attacker's body. A knife cannot provide any of that.
      I agree that firearms aren't automatic stopping machines. Shot placement is important. Having the right kind of ammunition is important. Having a powerful enough gun is a factor. Nothing is guaranteed, but the likelihood of stopping a very large and powerful attacker with a good self-defense firearm shooting good self-defense ammunition is higher than the likelihood of stopping that attacker with a thrown knife.
      In no case is the attacker going to pull bullets out of his body and then cut me with the bullets.

    • @willieboy3011
      @willieboy3011 4 месяца назад

      @@VTPSTTU I would not compare the effectiveness of a thrown knife to a shot bullet. The gun would likely win, but the thrown knife can be effective in self-defense, as the video demonstrates.
      However, a gun is not superior to a knife for lethality. Both have advantages and disadvantages, depending on many variables. I usually carry both, so the situation can dictate my weapon choice.
      From a distance a gun should have an advantage. In close a gun has some disadvantages. They are harder to maneuver to hit the target, and they may jam (unlike knives). Shooting a person in self defense, the bullets sometimes go through the bad person and kill an innocent person. Knives do not have this disadvantage.
      Moreover, one knife strike to the heart is usually fatal within seconds. Finally, never ever pull a knife out of your body if you have been stabbed. Once removed, you may bleed to death immediately.

    • @VTPSTTU
      @VTPSTTU 4 месяца назад +1

      @@willieboy3011 I understand what you are saying, but I don't believe that thrown knives will produce quick stops as often as fired bullets will. An attacker has a better chance of dodging a knife than he does dodging a bullet. A thrown knife hitting an attacker's arm has a much better chance of being deflected than a bullet does. A thrown knife hitting an attacker's ribs has a much better chance of being deflected than a bullet does. A thrown knife is not likely to go through the ribs or sternum into an attacker's heart. Very skilled knife fighters can thrust a knife into an opponent's heart somewhat easily, but a thrown knife just doesn't have the same effectiveness.
      If conditions are just right for the knife fighter, a knife might arguably be equal to a gun in lethality, but those are only under ideal conditions for the knife fighter. A thrown knife can be lethal, but nothing in this demonstration or any other demonstration credibly suggests that a thrown knife approaches the lethality of a fired bullet from a gun of reasonable caliber for self-defense.
      I'm aware that guns can have limitations at contact distances. Many pistols will go out of battery if the front is pressed against a person's body. Revolvers don't have this problem, but a revolver hammer can become entangled in clothing or blocked in some other way. In a grappling situation, a knife can be a more effective weapon, but no one is going to throw a knife in a grappling situation.
      If one is stabbed deeply into the body, the best course of action isn't to remove the knife if professional first aid is available. On the other hand, we can't just lie there quietly waiting for a medic if the fight hasn't ended. Leaving the knife inside the wound only encourages the other person to twist the knife out of the wound and stab again. A knife that hits ribs and deflects along the outside of the ribs can be removed safely enough. If one throws a knife at an attacker who twists out of the way a little bit, the knife could easily hit the ribs and deflect along the outside of the ribs. The attacker would need medical treatment, but he could still remove the knife and kill the defender.
      I'm not saying that one should never throw a knife in self-defense. What someone else does in this situation isn't my choice to make. I'm saying that there are dangers involved in using this tactic. That a skilled knife thrower can throw a good knife through many layers of denim into a stationary piece of wood does not mean that the same throw would be effective against every attacker.

    • @willieboy3011
      @willieboy3011 4 месяца назад +1

      @@VTPSTTU I would agree with this. A knife thrown cannot compare with a bullet shot. A knife in close combat can compare with a handgun in lethality though. A thrown knife can be used in self-defense, but I think this would be in very limited situations. Good points. Good luck to you.

    What a great video! Answered a question I've wondered about for YEARS! And throwing the Cold Steel Kobun was great too, as a light knife simply wont carry the same energy as a much heavier knife. (Think .22 vs. .45 or .223 vs. 30-06.) But the bullet comparison raises another question: how would a proper throwing knife compare against ballistic gel? Surely the hard wood behind the folded blue jeans "helped" with the blade's penetration because it has no "give" or flex like soft tissue. I would love to see you do the same comparison with a layer or two of denim in front of ballistic gel, or even a pork butt! 😅

    From the physics, caused by how the human body is constructed, throws are much more powerful (more momentum and energy) than stabs, so the result is not a surprise. The problem of knife throwing is hitting with the tip and with an angle near to 90 degree, in a situation of moving bodies and high stress. I can usually make a knife stick ten out of ten throws from close distance (about 1 to 4 meters) when aiming at a wooden board, but if I could choose between being armed with 5 extremely sharp and huge throwing knifes or a 5-shot .22 lr revolver, I would take the tiny gun without any hesitation.

Oh, Shuriken, back in the day were used to wound and distract. people should just focus on the skill because it’s fun, and none of us will probably ever have to throw one at a person. That being said, I would never want to be hit with it. This knife would go all the way through a human even after clothes because that wooden target is very hard to penetrate. You could stab up all the way into a carcass bone and all. Throwing has even more power.

    The problem with throwing knives is you no longer have the knife. If you fail to achieve what you set out to do it can then be used against you. Keep hold of it.

      Keeping it in hand is most important. The ability to do it it’s just so cool. it’s not a primary combat SKU.

      This is one of the most common objections to knife, throwing I don’t really get it. It seems like the one thing a lot of people who don’t throw will say. No one with sense will throw their only weapon away but to be able to do this is awesome. No one with any sense what also throw this at an aware assailant. This is guerrilla warfare stuff.

    I’m going to have to play devils advocate and say you conclusion about weight in this experiment is inconclusive at best. The hammer is a double edged spear point which has different impact ballistics than a single edge tan to. Akin to comparing a 240g ball ammo to a 160g hollow point. The hammer will have better penetration due to the tip having less surface impacting the target where the Cobon’s tanto tip has easily doubl the surface hitting on initial impact.
    If you compare similar shaped spear points of different weights you will find similar impact results with penetration getting less in proportion to the difference in weight.

      @@411Outdoors your correct that lighter blades penetrate less no matter what throwing technique you use. If you throw your 10 inch S&W throwing knives along side the 8 inch ones, the 8 inch will have less penetration overall but still penetrate in a similar fashion. The hammer compared to the S&W HRT for example would demonstrate this quite well both being spear points but the HRT being lighter will penetrate less.

      I've thrown knives for 20+ years, and I'll be honest... His hammer grip throw is unnaturally good. You could spend a decade practicing muscle memory, release timing, and force measurement. But some folks will always be gifted. That doesn't mean you won't eventually get there. Just don't beat yourself up over the struggles. It's a complicated skill.
