Jeez, I remember watching this, with my sisters and, we all nearly died laughing, the first time we heard the "mayonnaise and rope" line. To this day, whenever Martin Mull is mentioned around my family, someone yells "MAYONAISE AND ROPE!" lol
this is my earliest memory of Martin Mull performing. it was outrageously funny THEN, and it still holds up today.. it's actually the foundation of Kimmel's "Unnecessary moments in censorship" bit.
I'm proud to say I watched this on HBO when it originally aired. I shocked my third-grade teacher when I started repeating the jokes in class. My parents saw a guy in a tux with a guitar. Nothing to worry about.
I remember this routine from an episode of The Tonight Show (ie: "Johnny Carson" as we used to call it), oh-so-long-ago. (But I thought it had been Steve Martin. Obviously not! lol) Thanks so much for posting this.
Love Martin Mull, I wish Fernwood/America 2-Night would become available on DVD, such a hilarious show! Always loved this song, had several of his comedy LPs.
Loved his humor! I also saw him in Kalamazoo in the 70's when I was in college. His set was the same. So sad to hear he died recently. Thanks for posting, brought back some great memories.
RIP Martin Mull
Funny guy. Quite the talent. Musician, actor, writer, comedian, etc.
And accomplished painter.

You always made me laugh so hard. 🥀
Hey Bob, it's been so long that I've forgotten them off the top of my head. If I get a chance, I'll sit down with this clip and re-learn them.
Thls is almost a precursor to "yada yada yada".
I have the LP...the quality reminds me that I'm at least 50% of all my other lovers.

R.I.P. Martin. I see you everyday on the old Hollywood Squares.
I have been hoping to find this! Thanks for posting. I never forgot it since I saw it the first time.
He's a special one. A great comedian and one of my favorites. Hey Martin, thank you!
This was from a special he did that was on HBO. I think it was called "An Evening With Martin Mull." He has some really funny songs that he did.

Yup.
Martin looks a bit like British rock musician John Miles. He's also hilarious!

No. It's from a VHS source, THEN slow internet.
