So many people think a "alpha" wolf dominates his pack. In the meanwhile an alpha is literally the dad of the pack and is rarely aggressive, he is a calm and steady leader.
The problem is associating the word dominance with aggression..... dominance is mostly control....the alpha controls actions of the pack members.....he corrects misdemeanors and keeps the pack safe.... without dominance, he'll be replaced by a more dominant wolf who'd challenge the leadership of the alpha...
@@sudaesh This is incorrect. The whole alpha wolf-thing was debunked years ago. Please do look it up. What the OP said is correct: Wolves live in family units of mom and dad their pups and last year's pups. No replacing happens.
Yeah BC if your dog respects you as their owner they are submissive to you just like they would be to the alpha male in the pack. Its just like people if they trust in what you're doing they go along with what you say and do until they don't like it or have had enough and stop trusting you
@@sudaesh no, a wolf pack is a family literally. It's a male and female wolf with their pups. A pack isn't a bunch of wolf's thrown together. The dad is always the alpha. The son takes over when the dad is old. They act the same as a human family
For anyone who wonders, Casper bit someone and was taken from the owner. The owner didn’t listen to anything Victoria said. Casper wasn’t killed but ordered by a judge to do a lot of behavioral rehabilitation and not to be in public without a muzzle. The owner was fined $80,000
I just hope he gets to find a nice family after this. Was the guy forbidden to have a dog after this? I knkw some places forbid people to get more dogs after losing one in court. Cos that dude is a danger to dogs, and if he gets another one the story will repeat itself eventually. That's why I think people should have licences to own a dog just like they need to drive.
@@satsujin4027 good idea. But then less people will adopt because it's be harder to access a dog because there's an extra obstacle in the way: the lisence. But I would definitely be able to achieve the lisence.
@@satsujin4027 I hope Casper found a better loving family too, he deserves better but I have to disagree a little on your licence idea. It may sounds awesome but it would mean more issues on the adopting side cause not all can get a license cause if there will be one both state and training schools would make it cost a bit, and maybe make it more pricey and easily obtained if you pay someone for make you pass the test or such. My idea, based on your input, is that there should be a little test before someone buy of rescue a dog, just to see if they are mentally and physically okay for have one dog or a particular one, like a personality test if you want to say it. You do that and behave like this you may be fit for that dog or the other one. Hope you didn't got offended by what I said ✌🏻

I wish more people understood that our image of a "wolf pack" hierarchy is actually what happened when unrelated wolves are held together in captivity. In the wild, a wolf pack is a family. The "alpha" male is actually just the dad.
@@Dragoninja35 no, they are absolutely right. The guy who wrote the literal book that the observed phenomena of wolf pack "alphas, betas" etc all came from spent the majority of his career trying to convince the public that his initial findings were entirely wrong, after he dis more research on wolves in the wild, rather than the first sample pack of captive wolves he used. This is honestly not hard to find out.
@@kathyl9222 no, it isnt. Wolves that had socialised in various packs, brought together at various points in their development, are not the same as the relationship bonds between people, dogs and other pets.
Does that boy not realize that having a tough dog doesn't make you tough? It actually shows your insecurities. Hopefully he will learn. It will make them all happier.
Yeah. I think that the reason why this type of breeds are so feared is because people who want to look tough take them and then don't even train them properly. They want to look scary and be scary so they take a dog that looks scary. And then when people see a gangsta walking with his dog with a chain collar they associate these breeds with these people. And of corse the history of sog fighting plays into it as well
He didn't, after this episode or whenever it happened, he attacked someone, and was on death row until the judge overturned it and called for rehabilitation and neutering, while the owner was fined 80,000 ( more or less ). However, he was returned to this incompetent owner, Casper now has to wear a muzzle while in public.
Sadly he won't. Most never do. The number 1 dog surrendered or seized are pits. Owners want them to appear tough, ruin them, and they end up at a shelter. After a few months, they decide its the dog's fault, get another, and the cycle repeats. You can't stop these type of people from getting dogs either. Luckily most dogs are recoverable and can live a great life when placed in the right homes with proper loving owners.
From what I was able to dig up, the owner refused to follow through with Victoria's training, he also refused to work with any other local trainers Victoria suggested, and as a result Casper bit someone. Casper was detained for six months and the owner was fined. When the owner got Casper back, the judge ordered for the dog to be neutered and to wear a muzzle anytime he's outside. Now that dog has to basically live a miserable existence of being muzzled and being feared, with the only positive being he was finally neutered. His owner shouldn't be allowed to own a dog, especially not a bully breed.

@@wolfygaming7222 The appeal is that they are more durable than any fabric or leather collar. While they may not be the most comfortable, they don't break. I'm not agreeing with how the owner used their's though.
@@tagrisaj3344 Respectfully, there honestly isn't a reason to use chains or padlocks. The exception is if you need to chain your dog outside for a short time, and they tend to chew through other things. There are strong enough collars and leashes that will not break, even with the strongest of bully breeds. More expensive, yes, but more humane. Truthfully, I think that almost everyone who uses chains are using them as some kind of "status" show-- or they don't have the first clue how to properly train their dog. People like Eric are insecure, immature, over-grown kids trying to pretend that they are something that they are not. Just this "older" lady's opinions, of course. Victoria handles that owner so well. It's incredibly difficult when you've got to work with an owner who has a big ego and she puts her opinions across in a way that doesn't make him confrontational. Fantastic to watch.
I mean, a lot of it is gifted to the show since it gets the brand out there, but yeah there's a lot she does actually buy for them as well. This particular time she didn't mention a brand so she bought it herself. I think she realized he didn't *want* to be using a chain like that.. but it was really all he could afford that was heavy duty enough to hold that dog. Since I can guarantee that dog would break a cheap leash and collar with no effort at all.
She believes dogs should be killed over balanced training being used. There was a dog she couldn’t train and got it put down despite multiple balanced trainers saying they’d try.
Mitchell Wei, I would guess the gifts are paid by the TV network, in the budget of the show, not by her. That being said, it does not remove her respect and love for dogs.
Taiako more people need to here about this smh I agree with positive reenforcement for dogs that works with, but some dogs NEED dominating, and come out as happier, more confident animals. She put down a SPANIEL because her training methods didn’t work for it. Ridiculous. The only thing worse than practicing the “dominance” theory is an internet trainer recommending it. I hate it so much when I see people recommending that crap for aggressive dogs especially.
I really want an answer. If you have an agressive dog. Or a dog who hasn't shown any signs of agressive behaviour and just suddenly bites you and turns on you just once, what do you do? I heard someone had an amazing Australian shepherd and it bit him, he pushed the dog on the floor and told him firmly no like dominating the dog and. Afterwards he was he very good behaved dog. (he was trained already but just turned).

The dog I was walking stopped suddenly growled with her hackels raised turned around and lunged for me, and bit my wrist. Now in your case what I would do is, as calmly as you can, grab the dog by the scruff of its neck (after you sternly scold the dog), that way it doesn't hurt the dog, put it in another room, get yourself cleaned up, grab a muzzle, go into the room, and put the muzzle on the dog. Now that is just what I would do, I am in now way an expert at dog handling, so please check with an expert before you try anything
@@unaestrella1876 it's hard to say, there could be an underlying issue (physically or mentally), maybe the dog was startled, etc. As soon as you can be sure what the problem was you can look for a solution. Usually, using the alpha stuff will make sensitive dogs mistrust you and high risk dogs get more aggressive. It is possible to assert "your leadership" (as in, the dog will look up to you to lead him, not to command him) by staying calm, patient, stand your ground and building trust. Also, what do you mean when you say "bit"? Did he nip, or did he go full-on bite, shedding blood?
@@sarahswanson2147 What you would do is almost good.. just not the muzzle. First off, the dog just bit, so you shouldn't be anywhere near their mouth incase it happens again. Second, muzzles do a lot more than just preventing biting.. they can't even properly open their mouth anymore which they need to do for panting and such. Muzzles should only be used sparingly and in certain situations.. like if you're walking and you know the dog is reactive to other animals. Even then, you should be pairing it with food to teach them the other animal isn't a threat. Victoria has only used a muzzle on a dog in an epsiode once (that I can think of off the top of my head).
iibelle The one thing you should always remember when training dogs is it’s never the animals fault. Something caused it to do what it did, whether YOU moved wrong, you failed to train it earlier, you failed to desensitize it & therefore rushed it, you failed to get it checked up by the vet for potential issues/pain in its body, you didnt ask/give the command correctly, etc It’s never the dog’s fault. You have to look at yourself and/or the situation around you and ask why it responded the way it did.
poor dog, even though he’s large he shouldn’t have to deal with a lock and chain. I have a massive pit who would walk with a piece of grass attached to her collar.
I hate it when I see dogs with a chain around their neck instead of a collar or harness. A pet isn't a status symbol, it is a living animal that can bring us joy but we also need to respect them and put their needs before our own wants. UGH, I'm tired of people using shock collars on animals!

I do wish Victoria had explained that this whole Alpha Dog theorie had been debunked years ago by the same guy who came up with it. There is no such thing as alpha wolf neither a alpha dog! Wolves live in families not by dominance hierachy, and recent studies have shown that dog's might not even form packs but chose to stay alone and join other dogs for play time and socialization. Dogs show dominance behaviors and have personalities. So yes, inside a house a dog may be more agressive over food or more active than the other, but that does not mean one is the dominant, and DEFINITELY do not mean that you have to be agressive to be dominant over that dog.
@@cane4727 recent studies literally show otherwise lol. the guy who CAME UP with the alpha wolf/pack theory has debunked it himself. his name is David Mech.

@@cane4727 That theory was formed many decades ago on wolves from different packs all thrown together in an environment that wasn't their natural habitat. Dogs know you're not an alpha. But you can assert yourself as the rule maker. Also, I hate guys like this. They think they're so macho, but really, they just look extra ridiculous.
The alpha is the one who leads and cares for them the one who maintains order and brings the food coming not the person who attacks the others for seemingly no reason
I read somewhere that pets shove us into whatever parental designation is common to their species. Except birds- if they don’t have a mate present, they make us their emotional mate.
Rule Makers are Alphas. You can take a term and apply whatever definition you want to it. Being Alpha does not mean abusing or dominating your animals. It just means Rule Maker.
I stopped watching the “other dog trainer”. Ever since I found Victoria, I realized her ways were much better. No sudden nudging you dog to stop them from being aggressive or to refocus them. She trains like she understands the dog’s psychology.
I think the dog is a reflection of what the owner wants to be. It's a powerful dog everyone respects or fears. He doesn't want him neutered because it feels like it happens to him. Dominating such a dog also makes him feel alpha. It's a strange relationship. So, Victoria leaves and of course the guy never followed through on training Caspar or getting him neutered. Caspar attacks someone and he has to wear a muzzle by court order (in addition to an 80000 dollar fine), this was in 2012. Logically this doesn't seem like a story with a happy end. Caspar probably was either abandoned and/or put down. However, I can't find any updates since the 2012 news story.
So you’re telling me. This dude. Wants his dog to know HE is the alpha male. But also refuses to cut caspar’s balls off, which plays a huge role in the dogs aggression ? So you want your dog to be this big alpha around everyone else so they’re scared of your “weapon”. But you want the dog to fear you and know you’re in control bc you’re actually the alpha. Yeaaaa that’s not how it works
That guy is unfit to own a plush dog, not a Presa Canario. And the fact that someone sold him this dog is just insane. But one thing has to be said - while cutting the dog's balls can help with aggression, it is usually a bad idea to do if your dog is unstable and insecure.

I respect my mom and dad because they're calm, assertive, kind and they take care of us and each other. That's what being "alpha" is all about. It's kind of a silly term though. A relationship between a human and dog should be about leadership and working together, not domination.
I've managed to train CATS this way. Being the boss isn't about being a bully, it's more like "I expect you to follow these rules when living in my house. In return, I will keep you safe and fed and give you lots of love." Even when my cat Romeo has been very bad, he knows I will never hurt him.
dude in my house my dog CLEARLY knows that my momma is the top dog. But the thing is she is the one who trains him, takes him out, feeds him, and waters him. Also so do me and my sisters. My dog knows who is in control because of how we treat him. We don't throw him on the ground or anything.
I’m so thankful for coming across Victoria’s show before getting my pup. Her techniques have worked beautifully for my pups! They are very well behaved. 🐶😃

But you also have to take into consideration of people and kids that are afraid of dogs, some are petrified even of my medium/small dog (mix between Finnish Lapphund and Lapponian herder) you can see it in their eyes that they are afraid some will not even move while we calmly walk by. So yeah unless you are on your own land or have enough space (and sight) to see people or cars/quads please don't let the dogs run free.
Exactly what happens when you get a dog purely for aesthetics... only people whom have a lot of experience with training should be taking on a dog as big as him. It’s so good to see him start to admire the people who have a good connection with their dogs instead of his previous role models
Also wouldn't getting a dog purely for aestetics cause you to buy something ultra cute, like a teacup maltese/yorkie? This guy is trying too hard to look tough but it doesn't look cool at all, he's hurting the dog and worst of all, he's not getting him neutered. In my opinion, guys with girly dogs look much cooler cause they're confident and not trying to prove themselves.
Dogs are food or praise driven. That's why you have to say good or praise them in some way. Or you find their favorite thing, like a toy, and use that. It isn't that much harder to train if they aren't food driven.
@@jader2357 It’s also fairly simple to build a bit of a food drive in your dog. Make sure the dog isn’t getting loads of food and treats without earning them.
I don’t think this part of the episode shows this but he is actually really willing to make a change and start training his dog and working hard! I’m glad he wants to change and sees that what he’s doing is wrong
Lol alpha. I treat my dogs like they’re my pup and I’m their mother. They are on the same level as my human children and it’s made a strong bond between myself and my dog and my dog and my children. There is no competition for attention or love. I don’t even need to use verbal commands most of the time. I just look at her or snap my fingers and she will either stop what she’s doing or she’ll go do something.
Ironically, that's literally more true to the alpha thing than the bullying nonsense, since packs are usually consisting of families in the canine world, and led by parent/grandparent animals
THANK YOU. Packs are family groups! You’re recreating their ancestral organization! Woohoo! Obviously your dog still has to obey you, but they also need to love and TRUST you. They won’t do that if you try to be a bully.
I actually think this guy engaged with the process very well! He was open to everything Victoria said, and he actually seems like he really cares about the dog imo. Very lovely transition
What a great dude. Even though he was training with the wrong mentality, he was ready to take in everything the lady was teaching him to heart without being offended about it.
I hate the whole "dominant" thing.. When the key is actually to be the leader with your dog/horse/whatever animal that is strong enough to overpower you. If you are a calm and steady force, with clear boudaries and giving lots of praise, animals will love and respect you.
@@4ndr3cm no youre not... its proven that animals do not "dominate" over the rest of its pack. In wolf packs, there is an alpha, but they are strong and steady leaders, they do not "dominate" their pack members, they discipline them.

This an incredibly beautiful dog and I'm glad she it teaching him. I hate the dominance theory. We aren't dogs... We are humans incharge of caring for dogs by our choice. We must act as such. 💖💖💖 Good job Eric!!! Good boy Casper!!!
For the lady who owns the wolf dog, she should have been prepared that wolf mixes are extremely high maintenance and require more hands on everything and then she found a clueless trainer lmao.
My daughter is a vet Victoria was at UPenn vet school were she attended vet school. Victoria doesn't have a very good opinion of Cesar's training methods, neither did the vet PHDs.
They're good when used properly. I have a shock collar that has a vibrate mode and shock mode. It's been used on both my dogs, vibrate is the thing we use almost all the time, and it's a reminder to listen to us when we call him. Shock is based on what they react to, then modified to not hurt us and just give us a bit of a shock. If it hurts us when we try it on our arm, then it's too high. They both listen pretty well to the vibration, and the shock is only used when they run away and refuse to listen to the vibrations and calling
I use a E-collar, it's a amazing training tool if used right. I trained my dog off-leash in one day with the Ecollar. And i stopped his random aggressive attacks on dogs. They aren't cruel they aren't mean
As a vet tech, seeing animals come in on chains, i immediately know that im gonna have a hard time getting that dog to listen to me while working on them. I hate those things.
And that wolf is not either dominated or is dominant. It just fits with the owner, in perfect tune beautiful, magnificent!!! I love it! That kind of relaxed communion should be what all dogs have, no matter what size.

i watched a lot of me or the dog last year before i went home to visit with my dad and brother, who got a pair of husky sisters a couple years back. A lot of the tips and advice she gave them helped me keep them under control. I almost wish i was still living with them so i could make sure the girls were getting the care and attention they need, but i'm too chronically exhausted for one dog, let alone two of a high-maintenance breed.
So many people think a "alpha" wolf dominates his pack. In the meanwhile an alpha is literally the dad of the pack and is rarely aggressive, he is a calm and steady leader.
But when he is challenged, he does dominate the wolf who challenged him.. But yeah, don't just throw your dog to the ground.

I just hope he gets to find a nice family after this. Was the guy forbidden to have a dog after this? I knkw some places forbid people to get more dogs after losing one in court. Cos that dude is a danger to dogs, and if he gets another one the story will repeat itself eventually.

My idea, based on your input, is that there should be a little test before someone buy of rescue a dog, just to see if they are mentally and physically okay for have one dog or a particular one, like a personality test if you want to say it.
I never do that to my dogs my Rotties and pits are my barn dogs they are lovely sweet and nice
I think that’s a grown man
From what I was able to dig up, the owner refused to follow through with Victoria's training, he also refused to work with any other local trainers Victoria suggested, and as a result Casper bit someone.

Dogs show dominance behaviors and have personalities. So yes, inside a house a dog may be more agressive over food or more active than the other, but that does not mean one is the dominant, and DEFINITELY do not mean that you have to be agressive to be dominant over that dog.

That was terrible science and the man who came up with that theory, David Mech debunked it himself. Somehow that theory was transferred to domesticated dog who are thousands of years apart from wolves. it is proven that Dogs do not try to achieve a certain rank over us and we do not need to achieve a certain rank over them.

I am so disgusted by this guy. Ignorant and insecure "tough guy".
I have fostered "rough" dogs and dominance has nothing to do with abusing your animal. Cause that is what he did. Positive reinforcement is how you get respect from your dogs. Yeah I cant believe its 2020, there are TONS of studies proving that theres no such thing as alpha wolf or dominance hyerarchy, there are tons of studies proving that agressive techniques DO NOT WORK and only cause more problems.
But of course the "I'm macho so I have a big dog and he have to obey me" imbeciles are too tupid to study the minimum of dog behavior
@@satsujin4027 I think people confuse the sibling rivalry often seen among wolf pups for the "dominance hierarchy." In that regard wolves aren't that different from people, but I think people don't realize that at that point they aren't imitating the behavior of the breeding pair, they are the mean older/bigger sibling on steroids.

@@iimdone Yeah.. many people don't seem to understand that these are old episodes just reuploaded onto RUclips since they're allowed to now. A LOT has changed since these aired, and even Victoria has gone back and said she'd do a lot of things differently. In a lot of earlier episodes she'd use the dominance idea, but she phased that out in the show, and now she wouldn't even dream of doing it. At the time of recording this, the whole dominance idea was still big.. but it's nearly died off now.
I want to see this as a complete episode.... from begging to end. Not as a series. This is one of the most inspiring and interesting case of this channel.
They'll probably release the full episode later
If you have a US cable provider, you can find it on Animal Planet's website.
No, google Casper press canario...he never followed through with the training and Casper got taken off him after a bite
This is no way to train a grown up dog. When a dog is all focussed on another dog and charged up, he's not going to respond to any treats. Google Casper Presa Canario and you'll realise this video is a clip of an old episode and that the dog owner landed into trouble. Training ought to be balanced with proper relationship building exercises and obedience. Trust me you are better off with not seeing the full episode. Btw, I train dogs.
I can't find the episode anywhere. It's not even apart of season 3 on Amazon. I think the episode may have been removed due to the controversy caused by Eric not sticking to the training and Casper biting someone. All I can find are clips of the episode... :T
However, I can't find any updates since the 2012 news story.
toxic masculinity in a nutshell
Jasper is a powerful dog and need to have a strong bound with his owners My father always said * if you enter a room that is dark,You put light in not darkness*
What?
@@kedamono8616 Basically in this case it meant, if you have a dog that show agressive/insecure behaviors, you don't treat it with more agressiveness but with serenity and compassion.
You don't fight fire with fire, you pour water on it. It's the same, for dogs and for humans too, but specially for dogs since they don't speak our language and most people don't put effort into understanding theirs.

Yeah then owner blames dog or something.
Packs are about family. Not dominance. Being the Alpha doesn't mean you scare and intimidate your dog. Your dog needs to trust you in order to respect you.
Casper needs physical exercise in an open area, he needs to be socialized with other dogs of all sizes, and he needs an owner(s) who can connect with him on a positive emotional level as well as have the patience to train this breed of dog in the proper way.

Casper episodes make me so sad to watch ever since I learned the baboon of his guardian didnt go through the neutering, casper ended up biting somebody and law got involved. Casper deserved much better.
Hey I didn’t see the episode was he euthanized? :(
Neutering is unhealthy in dogs as well as other animals and humans. A TRAINED dog is the best dog. A neutered dog can bite and will bite. Neutering is not a solution.

You know I think it's hilarious when guys like this talk about the whole Alpha Dog crap the guy who originally coined the term and did a research dissertation on it study the phenomenon more in depth that he thought he had discovered and found that not only were there no alpha dogs but there was no generalistic hierarchy to begin with basically disproving his own Theory
I need source of this pleaaasseee
yeah, the guy who originally came up with the idea had been studying wolves in captivity. he did more research on wild wolves and found the the entire Alpha hierarchy was completely false. The guy spent the rest of his life trying to prove that his original theory was false though it seems he's yet to succeed lmao
@@romildapearl4445 There is plenty of published research online about studies into street dogs in countries including Romania and Russia showing that they do not in fact form packs. The guy had done the initial studies in captive wolf packs, and later found out that his initial findings about "alpha wolves" were all bollocks and that there are no alphas. Wolves live in a family pack and all work together

I use balanced training. It involves a lot of positive reinforcement too.
@@dolledupyoongi yeah I've wondered when is it the right time to discipline? There is so much conflicting info online...
@@jimothyj2638 It can depend. What are you trying to discipline/teach? How old is your dog?
As far as I know, positive reinforcement is the only thing that works on cats. Negative reinforcement (which may work for dogs) completely backfires when used with cats, as it only makes them afraid of you which in turn causes them to misbehave even more. Cats are terrible at drawing cause-effect conclusions when the effect is something they don't like.

Yeah, it unfortunatly is. It angers me when people use chains as collars or leashs on dogs to make them seem more scary.

Wow. Nononono. When you have a “pack” dynamic with a dog, it’s a relationship, not dominating them. With my dog, I taught him that we respect each other and that we’re partners. We’re so in tune I can tell him to “go home” from a few blocks away and he’ll sprint straight home and sit on the porch until I catch up to him.

Don't EVER let your dog walk alone off leash unless in an off-leash area.. a guy was walking home from the store with his dog off leash, because he was friendly and trained perfectly.. well guess what!?!? @@kimpbay exactly!
I trust my dog to be off leash and know she would never hurt somebody... but even in the mountains and in the forest if I suspect that there might be people or vehicles I put on a leash (10 meters or 32 feet).
I think there's a time and place to let the dogs be free and run around or just simply walk beside you, but where there's other people or traffic it's in the best interest of you, the dog, and others to keep them "under control", in my neighborhood I usually walk with a 5meters (16feet) but rarely let it go.
Imagine how insecure and unloved you would feel with a hardware store chain and padlock around your neck. SMH.
"Casper's lookin tight in his new collar" probably my favourite part
All of these dogs are food motivated. It makes it 10x more difficult when your dog can't focus on you or food.
Toys are great substitutes for food, or even pats and “good boy”s!

the fact he called his dog “it”
This is normal in some languages. Although I know it isn't in English. In my country you don't really say he or she much

They're good when used properly. I have a shock collar that has a vibrate mode and shock mode. It's been used on both my dogs, vibrate is the thing we use almost all the time, and it's a reminder to listen to us when we call him.
