How to Study in Law School

- In this summary video I talk about how to study in law school, what to expect and how to ultimately succeed. Law school is different from anything you’ve studied or seen in Undergrad or at work so it takes some getting used to. Ask 2L or 3L students how to study and the best resources to use.

What stresses you out the most about law school?
I got a question please kindly clarify this for me... I am from India and I got into a national law university in India I am currently studying there, is there any chance of me having a career in foreign like in other states and any chance of passing the bar examination of other countries.. Are there any rules or tips for me please
language problem..I am currently taking law subject in a level and I feel to take it if my result can afford me to do so. As a Chinese in Asian country we r not really used to speak English that much ,but there r still a lot of Chinese like u can speak English as if their mother tongue . I really did feel insecure without good command in English but still I feel to hang on throughout my uni life . It's not matter about hardworks ,it is matter of time since it is not an easy task to pick up a language . I do really hope to know your advice 😊
Most stressing time in law school for me is when the professor called me for oral recitation and Im not ready
Cold calls, I can’t even concentrate on listening bc I’m trying to prepare myself for getting picked
of coz, exam!
A nice structure to use in answering a exam long question is ilac: Identify the legal issue at hand, state the Law applicable, Apply the law to the facts and Conclusion
Fear of not passing should not stop me from going to law school.
I love your music choice and also, I think your series is very organized! If I were going to law school I’d find these so helpful :)
i'm actually going to law school and i really do appreciate this, thanks for the heads up.
This is one of the very realistic video of experiences in law school
Finally I find someone on RUclips who is really worth watching
Thank you so much! I'm starting my first year in law next year. Your videos are super helpful 💖
I just finished my 1L year waiting for finals results. I agree with everything you said :)
It is true that those who speak well in class aren't necessarily the ones that are going to do well on exams. The ones that are going to do well are those that are able to take the law they learned and apply that law to a set of facts in a fact-pattern. So, the person that can't speak well or that is shy might score higher than someone who has a good-speaking lawyerly type of voice.
I'm Reading those cases as we speak! here for some clarity, THANKS for the video🙏🙌🤗
Great tips, thank you!!
Thank you for posting this & being honest.
This was such an informative video! Thanks for sharing 😊
thanks for watching!
Thanks this helps a lot I’m a younger guy thinking about law school but not to sure now I now I want to purse it 100% I just have a serious passion for law and justice.!!
Thank you for posting this! I'm starting 1L in a few weeks and I've been loosing my mind. It's great to see a realistic/honest account of what it's like and assurance that it's okay to just try your best and not put too an insane amt of pressure on yourself.
Its been 2 years, how is law school going for you so far?
@@livingliefe4209 thanks for asking!! It's been a lot of work but pretty great overall. I'm graduating this May and was offered a post grad job last week so it's all coming to an end somehow lol. It's really bittersweet in a way - it was a great experience and I'll definitely miss it. Now I have to start studying for the bar!
Hello from Sorbonne Law School (France) !
Starting in August, thanks for the advice
I am just considering my options this is really helpful
This video helped me decide law school would be perfect for me! Thanks for the info 🥰🥰
Brittany! You are the best!
Hello, Can you please share your memorization technique or note-taking tips. :) Thank you.
Counselor Tran hasnt responded to you, but Mnemonics for Law Subjects that have multiple elements

In Workers Compensation law (California is where I am from) AOECOE (you can pronounce it AyoE CeeYohE
Am trying to apply for law school this year,so thanks for sharing your experience.my dream is to be a lawyer, but I did not make it though after high school, instead I was accepted to a business school, and I completed my study there at that business school which I completed my Diploma in Human Resources, but that's not what I want to do,I did study this because my mum wants me too.Be a lawyer is my dream job,I love debating, arguing about certain topics, and so on so when it comes to be a lawyer and everything about lawyer, everything is just so sweet in my ears. Thanks for sharing your stories, your experience in law school, will help me to prepare myself from what's going to come my way, while studying.
Thanks very much and God bless you and your family 🧡🧡
Once again you came through with another informative video, thank you so much! Oh and the sounds of New York in the background 😍😍😍
haha I know, I don't know why it was so loud that day! but yes - typical honking.
Thank you for the tips!
Yes, as a former 1L it’s extremely hard. The Socratic method isn’t bad if you’re able to think quickly on your feet. I personally loved the Socratic method.
I just recently found your channel and I'm really enjoying your videos😁 I'm in my final year of law, studying in South Africa- and it's so interesting to hear your experiences. Ps. Your name is the best💖😁
haha you have an awesome name too :D I'm glad you are enjoying my videos good luck in school.
this video is extremely helpful... thanks
lol I am a freshman, I'm just preparing myself for Law school ^^
Well even I was a freshman last year and once i got stuck with my Law homework and was not able to complete it but thanks to Law Homework Experts of My Assignment Services they guided me with my homework. well if you need any help related to law homework or assignment you can visit their website - My Assignment Services
Hey great videos. I have a lot of questions and they may be great for a video response :).
1. How do you go about finding housing in law school? If you can’t work while attending school can you live on campus?
2. How long did you or how long should you study for law school? Should you self study or pay for a classroom course?
3. What do you do for money while in school?
I will definitely do a video about financing law school. it depends on what kind of law school you go to but I think most have on campus housing. for me, most of the people just lived nearby in apartments or housing complexes. when you say how long should you study for law school do you mean the LSAT? if you watch my how to get into law school video I talk about it with my friend Susan but yes, I suggest taking a prep course. for your last question, I worked part time in my 2L and 3L years, most people do.
Your video is amazing!!!!
You should have been a lecturer or teacher your quite good at making ppl understand things ! XX ly
Hello mam
I am from India and I found this video very helpful I am going to join law school next month so this will help me alot.
Thankyou so much for this
I'm also from India
I just wanted to become a lawyer can you help me out!!
You're awesome. Thanks
Are you planning to make a video to answer questions ?
good info!
thank you!
Alternatively the law can be societal building through corporations, contract structuring, wills trusts and estates, but you will spend most of your time in disputes because that's how you are trained in case law disputes. With that background it's hard not to be obstreperous.
thank you 🤧😭 Congratulations Brittany am not intimidated by law school. knowing where to start is always great. you rode that horse gracefully and determination can u happen to make a list of the books that u recomend?? get a picture of the panorama Please?
I didn't read any books about law school before I started haha.
Hello, loved your video! my question is, if you pass the uniform bar in NY cant you practice in other states?
yes, you can practice in other states that accept the uniform bar.
I like to argue when needed LOL and I dislike those who lie to cover themselves so these two main reasons made me to consider law school. I’ve purchased lsat book to prepare me to pass. So my question here is I’m worried if I won’t do well since I’m a single older parent and that I’m also financially responsible to take care of my child. So I’m a little nervous even though, I’m doing pretty okay understanding the lsat book .
One skill is playing the match game by finding case law that matches the case law and fact patterns of the instant case. Or a precedential footing also known as a controling case or statute . Cases that have similar facts , area of law - like contracts , holding or decision that supports your clients interest, and is jurisdictionally controling , if you find these cases or statutes you can say they rest on "all four" or are controling. This is how you use legal research to bolster your practice. Why law school exams are tough is because the facts and issues are not necessarily resting on" all four" of controling cases or statutes which is why I.R.A.C. is really I.R.A.C.C. issue rule of law , analysis COUNTERANALYSIS, conclusion. With 1000 page case text books picking which cases are likely to be tested can be a crap shoot . Dealing with work Volume, parsing, and analysis, cogent writing skills are extraordinarily helpful. I have an m.l.s. and j.d. and dont practice unless attacked. Remember some sort of trespass or negligence is at the root of all these legal battles . So like the lady here has tried to explain it can be exhausting to be in continuous conflict. Love thy neighbor .
Get comfortable with failure y’all!
Omg how old AM I? I literally thought the honking in your video was where I am lol (I’m outside) 🙄🤣🤣
Same! I actually went and checked the window HAHAHHAA
Hmmm...I studied philosophy undergrad. Fear my neurotic interest in ideas will leave me with too many questions & intellectual hangups to actually practice law. I don’t know how my friends who studied philosophy went on to become lawyers. Hope they’re doing well.
Hi from Deakin University (Australia)
I'm actually going to 7th grade but I really wanna go to Harvard law school so I watch a lot of these videos!!
Keep chasing your dreams :)
How to b smart n sharp minded please upload 🙏
I was watching this video while working (a security type job) and I kept hearing someone honk but after awhile realized it was from the video 😂
Hi ! I love your videos ! If i want to be in transactional law, can I get a bachelors in psychology? or do I have to get it in business :/
I talk about this in my how to get into law school video but you can study whatever you want so it can be psychology!
alright, thanks!
Hi Brittany! I have a few questions regarding law school!
1. If I'm not the smartest, can I still go to law school? But working hard isn't a problem for me but intelligence is though.
2. Do you choose what type of law do you want to study before you apply to law school? And what law did you choose?
3. I'm currently in grade 8th, but what do you suggest me to focus on?
That is it thank you.
1. Of course you can still go to law school. I think it depends on what you mean by intelligence though because if you are unable to do the work or study and understand the cases then you might have problems doing well in school. I think hard work is definitely part of it but you also need the right type of "brain" to understand how to study and succeed in law school.
2. No, you don't. You can specialize after you get into law school. I didn't have a specialty.
3. Just focus on getting good grades in high school and getting into a good college so that you will have a better chance of getting into a good law school.
@@BrittanyTran thank you !
Thank-You, so much Brittany, I am an aspiring lawyer, your videos are very insightful. What are your views on Risk Management (bachelors) and a Law degree? What career paths could I endeavor on? I am contemplating law school, is it worth the initial investment? How many years would you say exactly did it take to see a return on your investment in a law degree? My apologies for so many questions, I'm just extremely curious. Also, what is your opinion on New York Law School? This is the law school I am interested in attending. My interests would be formulating corporate contracts for transactions, IPO's, intellectual property, etc... working as part of a legal team. Although I am very much interested in the Financial aspects as well such as financial modeling and analyzing market trends, pretty much anything Finance related is my genuine passion. I love to read and write. I am 21 years old, so I still have time to decipher which career path I wish to pursue.
Thanks a ton,
Noah Westt
have you seen my other videos on if I should be a lawyer and asking a law school career counselor? Those videos might help answer your questions. I think you can do a lot of things and it really depends on what jobs you get after law school and how you focus your studies during law school. If you enjoy finance and it is your passion, why do you want to go into law?
for 9 minutes you complained about law school and then you start giving us the tips🙄phew that was alot of negative energy. 💕im glad you made it through!
You should be a lawer like if you want her to become a lawer!!!
hi im in 10th grade at the moment i anted to know what if you are a c to c+ student is it possible to still be a lawyer
it's still possible! I would say study hard so that you can get into a decent undergrad and then study hard in undergrad so you can go to a good law school. however, speaking from experience I went to a middle to bottom tiered law school and I still made it as a lawyer!
Did you work during the law school? Is it even possible? BTW great video, thank you so much for it!
yes! i got an internship the summer after my 1L year and worked there part time during my 2L and 3L years!
@@BrittanyTran that's great! Thank you
Hearing the loud honking throughout the video, does it ever bother you when you sleep/want to have quiet time?
it took some getting used to at first but eventually you just drown out the honking and the sounds outside.
Chapman University of Law School gives financial aid for living expenses about how much?
it really depends on each person and either their financial need or their academic stats.
Do you know if it is mandatory to go to a law school in order to take the bar exam? I am in New York State.
only 4 states (California, Virginia, Vermont, and Washington) allow you to take the bar without going to law school. If you plan to take the New York bar, you have to go to law school.
New York requires one year in an ABA law school, but then you can apprentice for three additional years. It is very difficult finding a supervising attorney and you may need to work in the legal community first to find an attorney. The New York Rules for the Admission of Attorneys and Counselors has more information under section § 520.4.
Trinity Law School is 4 years part-time is it worth going?
it depends if you have 4 years to spare and you have to go part time. personally if I can afford to do a full time program I would so I can get it over with quicker but if you have to work in order to survive and go to school part time is a good option. I don't know much about trinity law school.
I’m not sure if I should go to law school. Any advice?
that's a tough question and really depends on your situation. why do you want to go to law school?
I thought grades matter a TON in law school? I read that only the top 20% in class gets the chance to work in big law
For someone considering law school... what are some of the most important introductory law books for the beginning student???
check out my how to prepare for the summer before law school video! Honestly, there aren't really any books that I would recommend unless you want to start learning how to read cases, which is mostly what you would be doing during your 1L year.
@@BrittanyTran thanks Brittany would you recommend Gerry Spence books?
I've never heard of him so I am not familiar with this books.
.... thanks again...so Brittany so can one study law without having to go to law school? I mean can one study the prescribed texts and yes might need explanations from time to time from an academic or professional?
you could although it would be very difficult. also, some states require that you go to law school before you can take the bar exam so it depends on if you want to take the bar exam too, you may need to go to law school. i'd also imagine if you don't go to law school it might be harder to get a job.
Hello. I am seriously considering becoming a lawyer. When you were in law school what was the she range?
do you mean the salary range?
@@BrittanyTran sorry, I meant age range. I'm older than the normal student
I think it depends on the school. for me, the majority are still people in their early 20s but there were definitely a few that were in their 40s and even 50s. They're just not the majority.
Hi, my name is Alex, I am a law student here in Brazil and I want to write an article about criminal law compared between Brazil and the United States. Can you help me?
sorry I don't know anything about criminal law!
@@BrittanyTran okay. Thanks.
Quick question! Do law school grades matter once you graduate?
They might matter for your first job but after that I haven't had to show or mention them at all.
@@BrittanyTran thank you! I’m so relieved 🥳
Can I buy your olde Law school book textbooks & cases?
unfortunately they're not with me, I gave them to my parents to keep for me!
Law subjects, my nightmares for life...
me too haha
Tell me which law school is best
it really depends on a lot of factors...I have a video coming up soon that will talk a bit about it.
The law is sublimated violence looking for alternative dispute resolution.
Engineer is the best.
Ohhhh Myyyyyy Goddddd ! if this is the scene of Chapman wonder what will be the scene of Yale Harvard and Stanford :-(
it's definitely worse.
just finished the whole law school playlist on your channel Brittany... U TALKED SENSE and A BIG BIG BIG THANK YOU ! Now i'm not coming for LLM from India to USA
But Brittany, if i come to USA for doing any certificate course to do a job as a paralegal, would it fetch me a better life ? I mean pay-wise and stress-wise? I know that doing an LLM would make me overqualified for any job if i'm not taking the bar and will make the whole point useless. SO CAN YOU PLEASE GUIDE ON PARALEGALS LIFE ? Thanks
it depends where you are a paralegal. if you work at a big law firm then the pay is probably decent but the stress will be higher. if you work at a smaller law firm then the pay won't be as good but the stress is probably less.
May I ask where you got your law degree?
Chapman University in Orange, California
After 10 std wat subject we should take sis
what is 10 std?
* honking happens *
me: * takes out headphones * wtf?
brittany: excuse the honking...
me: ... oh...
law school is hard
Hi i am thinking of being a lawyer can u post a on training for law school at a young age
do you mean how to prepare for law school when in high school or college?
@@BrittanyTran yes
there's honestly not much you can do in high school other than focus on getting good grades so you can get into a good college to set yourself up for the best law school.
in college, advice would be similar to get good grades so you can get into a good law school. that would include studying and taking the LSAT as well as 1-2 internships so you have work experience to put your on your application and that you can use as experience for your personal statement and other law school application essays.
@@BrittanyTran ok thank you
No extras life😭😭😭😭😭
Outlining for finals
Did you go full time or part time?
full time.
Thanks for the reply. I’m planning on going part time. I need to pass I have a wife and two kids she’s an lvn but I need to make this happen
You guys do three years?? In my country it's four plus a 1 year you do the bar exams so five
Is that after undergrad or does that include the 4 years you study in college?
@@BrittanyTran when you apply to go to law school straight out of high school you study law for those four years at uni then after that spend another 1 year plus some months studying for the bar exams ☹️
@@BrittanyTran when you apply to go to law school straight out of high school you study law for those four years at uni then after that spend another 1 year plus some months studying for the bar exams ☹️
yeah so for you, you spend less time in school than us. we spend 4 years undergrad and 3 years law school.
@@BrittanyTran oh..okay
Are you a genius?😂
The real question tho... do ya get paid well for all that struggle to get there?
in my opinion, yes :)
Brittany that's good 😎
How did you pay for law school
I took out student loans, I'm posting a video soon.
Oh no ☹ Bell curve grading 😥😫😨
I know :( not fun.
Brittany Tran I wonder if that's the global standard ? You're lucky you're done with school - I have 5 or so yes to go including clerkship and PLT...kinda depressed about that lol
you can do it!
Brittany Tran Aww thank you! 💝
Hoonnnnnkkkkkkk
Socratic method is done in undergrad. Dont understand the big deal about Socratic Method. So stupid.
Laws are simple Doc😐
you seem like a true introvert and didnt mesh well with law school lol
indeed.

I’m in yr10(14) why am I here
Drink everytime she says "law school"
You say law school classes are not that interesting??!! Such a passionless mediocre lawyer, how dare you call yourself a lawyer. I love this profession and loved every second at law school. You make it sound painful and hard like you were forced to do it. Law school is not for people who are not passionate about it.
totally agree, hence why I made a video "Should I Become a Lawyer" to make sure people like me don't end up going to law school just because their parents expect them to and they don't know what else to do. I'm glad that you love being a lawyer and enjoyed law school! You're lucky :)
