  • Prima Facie, Jodie Comer's one woman play, has been one of my favorite watches of this year. Directed by Justin Martin and written by Suzie Miller, the show focuses on Tessa, a criminal defense barrier who's life is irreversibly changed. This video essay focuses on the absurdist themes I found to be connected with the work, most notably the ideas of the French philosopher, Albert Camus, as depicted in his essay, The Myth Of Sisyphus. The play is a marvelous and powerful piece of art, and deserves to be seen by all. If you've seen this play live, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Prima Facie perfectly presented the argument that the judicial system places victims of sex crimes equally(if not more) under interrogation and on trial as the perpetrators via a one woman monologue piece which felt like someone sharing a lived experience.
The Last Duel dealt with similar issues to Prima Facie but from a different time period but the latter managed to connect with it's audience in a way that the former failed. Why do you think that's the case?
Through cinema, Prima Facie was my introduction to the strength of theatre.

Thank you for your thoughts and comment. Prima Facie's presentation certainly enabled it to be as successful as it is today. By providing the audience with a detailed perspective of a person who deals with the ultimate injustice, we can understand the struggles of women in a way that has never been portrayed before.
I'm working on a video on The Last Duel right now! It's one of the best films of 2021 in my opinion. I think the marketing of the film let it down heavily in terms of its box office and some thought it completely copied the presentation of Kurosawa's Rashomon. I've heard some others think it was one note in its messaging and contained too much repetition. In the end, it didn't get enough attention.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! A sub would be appreciated :)

@@cinematothemax Just think. The Last Duel dealt with similar issues to Prima Facie but from a different time period and failed to resonated with it's target audience it sought to cultivate while a modern day, one woman theatrical play recorded for Cinema managed to capture the imaginations of theatre goers and film nerds alike. All of this on the strength of Jodie Comer's performance which was powerful enough to take Prima Facie to Broadway.

The sole emphasis being on Jodie helped massively, and Prima Facie is unlike anything else. I appreciate both the works for what they are and hope everyone can form their opinions on both! Excited to see how the play does on Broadway.

@@cinematothemax The very judicial system Tessa dedicated her life to then would end up on the recieving end of be it under police interrogation or the witness box after the rape is what leaves so much room for irony to creep in. In the end the court system was presented a game of who has the best QC. The Defence Vs the Crown Prosecution.

You gave me more backing after everything that's happened to me. I want to watch this play so so much for reasons closely related. It hits me hard, going through counselling, there are things when it comes ito consent - people can't read. I understand it's a learning challenge in some cases. But we all need to learn, we'll need to get better.

Thanks for this nice analysis. Now recent news: "Trump must still cough up at least $90M in E. Jean Carroll verdict". Now it is a long shot, but how many of the (anonymous) jury members might have watched the play? One? All of them? It was in New York, after all. So, technically at least, one woman just could be a game changer. Jodie Comer has become the embodiement of the strong woman, both, in her roles and as a real world person. Most of her roles are about traumatized women, abused women, women facing incredible heartship and seemingly insurmountable obstacles, yet they always prevail or meet their unavoidable fate with eyes wide open. That touches the hearts and minds of countless people around the world -- and not only women and girls!

I think you summed up the problem correctly. The law has been stacked against the victims of Rape be they female or male. Until there is a change in the law, the the plaintiff is actually listed to and really sympathetically dealt with by the police officers who need to gather all the necessary evidence. Nothing will ever change. One problem as I see it, is the victim is so horrified, disgusted at what they have been subjected to, either my a person they know, even a partner, or a person they have never seen, their first decision is often to want to wash. Thus destroying vital evidence. This makes the job of prosecuting much more difficult for the Police and the Court. Children are terrified to tell their parents. When studying Psychology at Cambridge back in the 1960s we were taught if you can’t tell your parents you can always tell me. Wise words. The problem with children is nobody wants to believe them, the abuser could be a new boyfriend of the mother, an Uncle or even the child’s own parents. I have seen this countless time over the decades. A known Pedophile, attacked me age 11 in a public swimming pool. The attendants got him on the ground until the Police arrived. Unfortunately my Headmistress didn’t wish the school’s name brought up, she was a JP. Despite this man having a criminal record the Police had no option but to drop the case. I aged 11 could do nothing about it. The man was fired to strike again.

I'm so sorry to hear what happened to you and that your abuser was never brought to justice. It sounds like you're leading a great life despite it and unfortunately that is all you can do when the justice system fails you. You've hit the nail on the head with the way rape victims, and especially those who were children at the time of the assault, are not believed. There's so much onus for somebody to be the "perfect victim", with a clear recollection, copious evidence and perfect behaviour. As well as not washing so DNA samples can be collected, it often takes time for somebody to process the horrific things that have happened to them, which means it might not be reported until days, months or even years after the assault took place. In a lot of high-profile cases of historical rape and sexual assault allegations, there's a vocal minority of people asking why the victim has only spoken out long after they were assaulted, and not understanding the impact of trauma, the way some people might explain away rape as consensual or just unpleasant, or the way some children might believe that their assault was just "doctors and nurses", preparation for consensual sex later in life, or an expression of love from their caregiver. Often people's memory is clouded and people may not be able to remember what happened or process it until years later. I think this is something the play explores beautifully, and my heart ached for Tessa watching and reading it, especially when the defence made illogical allegations against her, and how she only remembered some of the details of what happened in the courtroom years later. I'm so glad that we have stories like Prima Facie and a cultural shift where more people believe and understand rape victims, but the legal system hasn't caught up and that's something we might not see for generations, or at a time when governments, the police and the legal establishment are prepared to make massive changes in the way rape is prosecuted and investigated.
