- Tips on how to grow Reishi Mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) at home simply and effectively. In this video, I explain the nuances of growing these awesome medicinal mushrooms, including how to manipulate their growth with fresh air exchange. I demonstrate the sawdust block spawning method using homemade grain spawn and pasteurized hardwood fuel pellets. These steps can be skipped by purchasing spawn or fruiting blocks from spawn suppliers.

I've watched this video many times, as well as your cordyceps vids, and I'm really thankful for folks like you who are sharing your experience, skill and knowledge. Just wanted say thanks for what you're doing and sharing.🍄 Keep shroomin king!
Thank you for your kind words, that actually means a lot to me, and thanks for watching 👍
Thank you for these super thorough videos, so many people only post choppy sections. It's great to see the whole process and get your explanations on each step. Keep it up, please!
I will, thank you for the kind words and for watching 👍
Good step by step info! Like that you gave ways in which to use the mushrooms. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you for doing this series.
I'm just getting started with reishi myself. I'm f-in' ecstatic about it too.
They are really fun to grow. Here's my latest Reishi grow video using a monotub if you haven't seen it:

I finally cleaned up my wild Reishi plates. Will be moving to liquid today and hopefully grain very soon. Will be trying your tech for sure. I love all the experimenting.
@@bebophippie1781 Awesome, please let us know how your grow goes 👊
@@RenegadeMushrooms Oh I will. Might post some clips of my success. Thanks again.
My standard fruiting block recipe I use in this video is:
2 lbs. Dry Fuel Pellets
2 lbs. 13 oz. Water (Adjust to Pellet Moisture Level)
1 to 1.5 lbs. Spawn
have you grown them on masters mix or 20% bran supplemented? I wonder about yield differences.
@@mark-xf4qq I have not, my strain grows so well on straight pasteurized HWFP that I haven't experimented much.
Does it matter what type of HWF pellets to use? I hear most are made from Oak sawdust. What if I am trying to grow Hemlock Reishi?
@@RecycledSkills I tried my hemlock Reishi strains on hardwood fuel pellets and they wouldn't fruit. If you don't have hemlock sawdust I personally wouldn't try hemlock reishi.
@@RenegadeMushrooms Hmmm. I have access to some hemlock wood chip mulch for landscaping. I had been thinking of using that. I have a wild red reishi, and your antler and red reishi cultures. What are you fuel pellet of choice for those?
Put your sealer in front of your flow hood, add air to your bag right before sealing it and that will make mixing easier
Just thought I’d let you know a lot of with what I’m doing I use you as a guideline thank you so much for making these videos Bill from Alberta Canada
That means alot to me 👍 Thank you for watching and for the kind words.
I was literally able to follow this with just audio... (was housecleaning). So this was really well explained. Will Reishi grow on 70/30 hardwood/pine pellets? Pure hardwood pellets are hard to come by in my country and are about 10 times as expensive.
Thank you for the kind words, it's funny how much easier it is to do something than it is to try to explain it to someone else. I always feel like I forget to say something. Anyway, I'm pretty sure Reishi will do fine on that blend. I've grown it on hardwood/softwood blend pellets before and it worked fine. Please try it though, and let us know how it goes.
First of all thank you for you video, you're awesome. Bro isn't that green on your wood wall and rack mold ? I might be wrong but that gave me the impression. Mushlove
No, I think it's just the bad lighting making it look green. I try to keep everything pretty clean, but I occasionally find a little mold on the block walls in tucked away corners. When I find it, I clean it up. It's just a normal basement. I want people to know that if they use the right techniques, you can grow tons of cool mushrooms in any old basement. MUSHLOVE 👍
Great video! Thank you very much for sharing!
Buen video amigo, muchas gracias!
Looks great, thanks for sharing! My reishi exploded with billions of spores the last time. I didn't realize could grow just antlers until last week. Had to come on here to see what was said here, for my allergies and breathing sake, going to try doing that. How do you get your bags to seal with the gussets folded in? Every time I try it on number 5, the middle melts and ends still do not seal. Turning it down doesn't seal the ends that are doubled at all. I have to open bag all the way and seal it across. Yours looks so nice.
I don't have that issue with my sealer, but make sure to hold the arm down firmly for the heat cycle plus an additional 10 seconds before releasing the arm. This helps a lot in getting a good seal. You have to give the plastic time to cool before releasing the arm, and firm pressure makes a better seal.
Thanks again... again! I've been plowing through all your vids since discovering your channel and my wee brain gets overloaded easily. I'm getting familiar with all the different TEK methods. One thing that bothers me is the use of all those plastic bags. I'm so tired of non-recyclable plastics, especially where I live. Is there a good alternative method that doesn't require plastic bags? I've got boat loads of glass jars for all the inoculation stuff. Could this be done using a mono tub method? At least plastic tub are reusable. Thanks!
Yeah, you could pull off the pasteurized fuel pellet method in small clear plastic storage totes or buckets. You just have to figure out your ventilation and fruiting holes. Drilled holes covered with micropore tape would probably get the job done.
Tubs or plastic eating mushroom :)
blenderbender
you should check out plastic eating bacteria or plastic eating mushrooms. Ya plastic bags seems wasteful. I get that. But that's a lot less plastic then say in a laundry soap container. When I always start questioning plastics and stuff I think hmm how many gallons of oil did this take make? Just a drop? How many plastic bag equivalents of oil has been spent by the US military in Ukraine? Haha the US military is like the largest polluting organization especially since they got military exemptions. I remember reading more about it when I bought some equipment from a military base surplus auction a couple years ago. They technically don't have to follow the EPA etc I believe. I got a good laugh when I first learned that ya know the hypocrisy of government.
Although there are some bags that are plastic like that's degradable I've seen some sellers offer online. Theyre a bit more, and they may have been made in texas or unicorn bags I can't remember. If you google degradable mushroom bags you'll find stuff.
Turn up ISO on camera for lightning issues
I do adjust the ISO, but I don't like to set it too high because it makes the image grainy.
Wish ppl came up with someone else to spawn with then plastic bags. I've been working on ways to just spawn from glass jars myself cause I refuse to add to pollution. Only use reusable glass syringes, etc. I get this is proper I just can't wrap my head around everyone with the plastic. I like to use popcorn cause it's simple. Thinking of just putting some oak coaster planks on the top of the popcorn jars as a substrate.
I'm new to reshie and have the liquid culture so I mean will it spread on popcorn and just won't fruit unless a type of hardwood substrate? I get I can just spawn on the oak coasters I got but you think they will fruit from a popcorn jar if I add oak to the tops and toss them in fruiting chamber?
Been working out my cubes and can easily add Coco coir and gypsum to the top and it spawns fine on popcorn so I figure maybe this would work the same but with oak?
You can grow Reishi in glass no problem, but they like to fruit from a wood based substrate. You could just pasteurize some fuel pellets, aspen shavings, etc., mix in your spawn, and add it to a clean glass jar or container (craft stores nowadays have some pretty sweet glass containers). I would consider moving away from popcorn though if you have any other local options like wheat, rye, millet, sorghum. I know popcorn works, but it generally underperforms in most important spawn parameters.
Thank you for sharing your Reishi growing technique!
will follow it, got things ready, reishi is colonozing aggressively, i love that.
i wanted to ask, are those gasexchange holes necessary (or holes in the big plastic container) since it gets fae when opening the lid and misting it?
greetings from austria
I think the holes are preferable, but not absolutely necessary. They actually allow a decent amount of air exchange while still maintaining humidity.
@@RenegadeMushrooms got two boxes, will do holes on one first. thank you and thank you for replying :)
Hey! Thanks so much for the information. Is there a part two? I can't find it... How long will the reishi take to colonise the substrate? And how long to fruit?
They usually colonize within 2 to 3 weeks, but they are slow fruiters that take months to mature. Here are some additional videos:

Thank you for your video. Do you think I can use ricehull in substitute for sawdust as growing substrate?
It's worth a try if you can't find sawdust. Some species do well on just hulls, but I've never tried Reishi that way. If you try it, let me know how it works for you.
What size bags are you using
Also what size micron filter is on them?
.2 micron, 3T bags straight from Unicorn Bags.
Thank you!
Noticing you use quite a bit of spawn on your grain. Is that just for faster colonization? Asking because I have a half gallon jar of black reishi almost fully colonized and I was planning on inoculating 4-6 10lb bags but now I’m rethinking after seeing this.
I use about 1 lb. per bag for a couple of reasons. I'm mostly using unsupplemented or lightly supplemented substrate because I use pasteurization instead of sterilization. The extra grain boosts the nitrogen content of the overall block and boosts your yields. As you mentioned, it also boosts colonization speed and decreases contam risk.
@@RenegadeMushrooms nice, thanks for the info! Appreciate you 🙏🏼💜
Whats the best medicinal strain?
There are tons of Reishi strains out there. My favorite is the G. lucidum strain from Field & Forest Products. It's available as a liquid culture syringe from them.
why Tyvek instead of lids ?
They are pickle jars not canning jars. The lids that come on them are garbage so I substitute the tyvek. They are useful because four of them fit perfectly in a 23 quart Presto PC.
Is this purely HWFP or is it supplemented with what ?
Not supplemented, just straight pasteurized HWFP. I do spawn heavy though, about 1 lb. of grain spawn per 5 lbs. of sawdust.
I noticed your using a inline fan on your flow hood. How much cfm does the fan put out?
I'm going to do a short video on my flowhood very soon. The inline duct fan works great and is usually cheaper and easier to find than a squirrel cage blower. I don't remember off of the top of my head, but I will give all the details in the video.
Do you only fruit them in tubs? Every time I put my blocks in my fruiting tent I get mild mold on them and have to harvest early and then I don’t get to watch them conch out :(
Yes, I mainly use tubs for that exact reason. Just like Shiitake, light surface mold is common when growing Reishi. The tub setup seems to minimize it.
@@RenegadeMushrooms good to know. Thanks again for awesome content. Your videos have been a huge help on my mushroom cultivation journey.
Hope you don’t mind me asking about something else.
I’ve expanded several jars of Cordyceps LC going on 11 days now. All look super healthy and ive inoculated with the most colonized LC jar but I’m not sure what to look for when it comes to storing in refrigeration. Think they’re ready or should I give them more time?
@@orionsbelt3827 With Cordys, it's best to use your LC asap. They should be good to go after 11 days, especially if you used peptone so if they look pretty thick with mycelium when you swirl the jar, I would send them.
@@RenegadeMushrooms 🙏🏼
What model impulse sealer is that? I love that it's wider
I bought it like 20 years ago and it's been a stud. I only changed the sealing band once in all those years. It's a PFS-300, 430 watt.
I've always known about medicinal mushrooms being grown on wood. I'm surprised you're growing it on grain. Do reishi lose potency or some benefits grown on grain?
I'm actually growing them on hardwood sawdust, the grain is just a carrier for the mycelium to colonize the sawdust.
Is it possible to breed mushrooms if you add Plug Spawn directly to the sawdust without grain?@@RenegadeMushrooms
@@RenegadeMushrooms will a wood based substrate do the trick as well ?
@@kattiewilcox6935 For spawn or as a fruiting substrate? What type of wood?
@@RenegadeMushrooms I'm spawning on rye berry grain..then transferring to wood based substrate
is it possible to do innumerable transfers of reishi mycelium hoping it doesnt undergo any senescence unlike cordys
I've been expanding the same Reishi culture for 4 years now with no drop off in production. Most mushrooms take quite a while to senesce but they don't last forever. Cordyceps and Morels senesce very quickly, which is part of the reason they are so challenging to grow.
@@RenegadeMushrooms omg 4 years thats boosting hope in me, yeah its a ton true about cordys and morrels that they senesce quickly. THANKS
How sterile is the room they're growing in? Looks like average basement or is it super clean??? In one of Stamet's book he mentions how in Thailand they stack them like bricks basically. No spacing at all. Just read that 5 minutes ago before coming here.
It is just your average basement. That's one of my focuses of the channel. I want people to see that you can grow beautiful mushrooms just about anywhere if you use the right techniques. I want everyone growing their own awesome mushrooms at home. I've never tried stacking fruiting blocks. I always try to keep them from touching to prevent overheating from metabolic processes, but give it a try and let me know how it works.
That's awesome they're flourishing without you keeping a super sterile environment. Woo! Thanks for sharing your set up. :) I haven't grown this specific species yet, thinking about trying to fill a shipping container, but starting small. I have read in multiple books and seen online about stacking the poly bags to form beautiful walls that also saves $pace.
So wait.. you want spores for medicinal use?
Yes, Reishi spores are loaded with triterpenes from what I understand. The fruit body and spores have been used medicinally in Southeast Asia for thousands of years. Some Reishi farms have developed techniques for maximizing spore collection.
