Thank you guys! I'll be adding this to my travel plans for next year! My wife and I live in California. We purchased a converted Ram Promaster 3500 last June, and have taken a few trips (New Jersey (July `22), Texas (Dec `22), Lake Tahoe (July `23), and to local beaches practically every weekend! We own a gym so we are not (yet) able to take trips longer than 7 days. By the way, our van is named Turtleshell, what a coincidence!

I am from the South so front porches have always been staple so I understand the serenity you feel. I grew up in a two story house, were we have a porch down stairs as well as upstairs, and I still sit up there when I visit my mom's house. I love the historical facts that you have added making it also a teachable moment.

I just learned about this a couple of years ago. Blows my mind. Definitely never taught this in any US history class.
I now live in small city founded by a black man, Centralia, WA. We had our first Juneteenth celelebtation this year and one of the presentations was about our founder. Although we learned a lot about the city's founder, George Washington, when we first moved here, I was astounded to learn of the ingratitude of the early white community. (Guess it was my white privilege blinders.) Unfortunately, a lot of those attitudes are still here. Hopefully I'll be able to help out with the event next year.

Never heard of Centralia. Will look that up! The thing I find so ironic about the current efforts to get rid of so-called "CRT" in US education is that the version of history that's been taught in public schools has always been so grossly sanitized. There are countless stories just like Tulsa. Entire towns wiped out. And stories just like Centralia, where the contributions of Black and other people of color are simply omitted regardless of how fundamental those contributions are to the events that took place. It is mind-blowing, and despicable, to go to school for 12+ years and know so little about what has happened (and is happening) in the place we call home.

When Black History Month started, my first thought was, "This is US history!" Now I've learned about the UDC - The United Daughters of the Confederacy - and its impact on school text books. SMH!
Omg I love in WA and have been to Centralia many times. It kinda has racist vibes so I don’t stay long just go there for the outlets. Nice to learn it was founded by a black man though, that’s amazing.

I love your van but i need a TV an what anout jeating
Thought about installing a TV, but it would just take up unnecessary space. Plus, we can always use the projector if we want to do a movie night. One of our main reasons for traveling is to be outside in nature. So we don't miss the TV when we're on the road.

There are countless stories like it that unfortunately are not well known. In order to avoid repeating the worst of the past, we need to acknowledge and learn lessons from what has happened.
