Brilliant! Such clear explanations on squat that draw my full attention to feet weight bearing, knees alignment, and keep the back in neutral position. When I process these movement patterns in a slow and steady pace, my nervous system is learning! Thank you, Taro.

Which exercises did you use to start? I have a similar problem, lying down mostly for over a year or being pushed in a wheelchair because of back pain. When I sit my back is now very rounded and when I try to straighten my back or stand up it always hurts

I like the tip to NOTICE the weight on your feet. My intentional squats are good, but getting up off the "slouch couch" I find I do have more weight on the heels. I am now getting up mindfully!

I worked with a PT a few years ago. At first I was unable to squat with correct form more than 45 degrees down from standing, but the PT helped me develop strength and range. I tried your instructions now and I’m happy to discover I am still doing correct form per your directions here, and can do reps bending the knee to 15 degrees below 90. Still work to do to be able to go all the way to the calves.

Thanks for these comprehensive tips. One more, less obvious and more difficult to notice issue is alignment of shoulders and hips. Also, it is worthwhile noting that, like the squatting spine angle, an optimal feet angle too depends on anatomy. It takes some experimenting to find it.

Interesting. I can easily squat becasue of long term yoga practice but I have never done it this consciously. I got aware of that I have a tendency to make a bit of a curve above the buttocks...but are we not supposed to have curve there?
