Another exercise to work on. Balance and strength aren’t there with my hip muscles, but we’ll get there. My toes object if I go too deep on the back foot.
My biggest mistake with lunges was I thought you needed your feet to be one in front of the other in a straight line. It’s extremely hard to balance that way 🤣
Thank you so much for this instruction! Could you please tell me about the back foot. Mine feels best when angled out about 30 degrees (maybe less) and my balance is good and knee straight. If my back foot is straight I have no stability at all. Hope you can help! thanks
thats probably your habitual pattern. my guess is you turn your foot out slightly when you push off during walking. this compensation is quite common, and often associated with bunion. if you dont have any issues related to your foot or knee, then that compensation is probably fine.
This was so helpful! I thought I was doing lunges just fine but now I see that my left knee is tilting inward. I have a question though. Do you mainly push back up to standing with your front foot ?
How can I do this lunging exercise with my knee on the floor instead of standing, as my mobility seems more restricted in standing, or is this position on the floor working different muscles? My physical therapist had me place one foot on a bench in front of me to do a lunge, yet I think moving forward was encouraged and that was not so much to strengthen the core and improve balance, but to stretch glutes and strengthen leg muscles. In the exercise you gave here, my movement is restricted by my knees and ankles and tight muscles around my hips… so how do these get more movement if they are weak?
hey taro, i have a strange request. i'm not flexible enough in my shoulders, to grab the pole like that. any chance you provide instruction to improve the shoulders in that manner?
Hi! knees go past toes all the time during functional activities, and they are meant to. There are many variations of lunges. Some variations require knee to go past toes, and some don't. The version I share in this video is the most traditional lunge, and this one does not require knee to go past toes. If you follow my instructions, you'll see your knee will not go past toes unless you translate your weight forward.

Great!!
Great technical breakdown of a foundational movement. Videos like this will make these movements safer and more accessible for everyone. Thank you!
my pleasure:)
Thanks for these useful tips! One additional point worth mentioning is lateral feet distance. For me, approximately hips width distance works best.
Taro is the best teacher.
thank you:)

that's a nice progression though if you want to challenge your balance!
