Thanks Mr Doyle. Always a pleasure and excited to here what you have to say about the mist. Hope your wife is doing well and good luck being a nurse and taxi driver. If you can’t make it next week, no worries. We’ll be waiting. Take care.
Skeleton Crew is my favorite collection. You're ordering of those stories is very different from mine. Some of my faves are The Jaunt, The Raft (He whispered, “Do you love?” Somewhere, far across the empty lake, a loon screamed.), Survivor Type (this hand or that. good food good meat good God let’s eat.), Mrs. Todd's Shortcut and Word Processor of the Gods. Many that you ranked low, I rank high and vice-versa. I actually liked Here There Be Tygers and Cain Rose Up (Good drink, good meat, good God, let’s eat!). I'm a HUGE fan of The Mist. I'm one of those rare fans that loved the show.
I know this video was more than a minute ago ... I actually subscribed within the first few minutes of this particular video too. Just discovered this channel. I think your presentation is awesome. I hope all is well with your family and your wife is recovering from her surgery.
Hey Johnny. Thanks so much for the kind words! And yes, my wife is doing well now. Hard to believe more than a year has passed since the surgery. I appreciate that you checked in and took the time to leave a comment, man. Thank you!
Loved this book! Maybe his most underrated short story collection. I had The Mist, Miss Todd Shortcut, Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, The Jaunt, and Survivor Type in my top 5, with Nona and The Reach as contenders. Thought it was interesting how many of the stories contained the statement" Do You Love?" odd, but interesting. Cheers 🍻 👏
Honestly after #15 or so it got difficult to rank them! So many great stories and all so very different from one to the next. I had considered addressing the “Do you love?” thing, but I just couldn’t find the common thread that stitched it all together!
@@agreatundertaking omg so excited. My friend has a camp in a town that has a lil grocery store and I always imagine that story taking place there. Top 5 King Novella evah! ( in my best Bangor accent) 😆 cheers 🍻
First and foremost- best of luck to your wife, I am pulling for her! I'm sure everything will go fine and you will do a great job of helping her recover. I'm almost done with Skeleton Crew, just a couple more stories to go. I actually have a VERY similar list to you, so far. It's been a really fun and addicting read. I actually wish Cain Rose Up was removed from the book, much like Rage has been removed from print. But, that's another topic for another day.
Hi Sean. We were able to come home yesterday. The surgery went well and my wife is in good spirits. Thank you. Yeah, had King developed the protagonist and his motives I might’ve looked more favorably on Cain Rose Up, but as I said it just seemed like gratuitous violence just because.
Hi Jamie. Thanks for the well wishes. My wife is recovering and is in good spirits. I appreciate the kind words and encouragement. I hope you have a good week! ❤️
What a great list and great video as per usual. I had to rank the poems the lowest because I just don't understand poetry. I'm not good at reading or interpreting poetry. Here is what I came up with: 22 - For Owen (sorry Owen) 21 - Paranoid: A Chant 20 - Cain Rose Up 19 - Big Wheels: A Tale of the Laundry Game (Milkman#2) 18 - Here There Be Tygers 17 - Uncle Otto's Truck 16 - The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands 15 - The Reach 14 - Beachworld 13 - The Reaper's Image 12 - The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet 11 - The Wedding Gig 10 - Morning Deliveries (Milkman#1) 9 - The Raft 8 - The Monkey 7 - Mrs. Todd's Shortcut 6 - The Jaunt 5 - Gramma 4 - Survivor Type 3 - Word Processor of the Gods 2 - Nona 1 - The Mist
I will have to read the book myself first, but I will definitely be coming back to watch this... I planned on doing some sort of King short story ranking in the future as well.
While I can certainly understand your feelings on 'Cain Rose Up', I have a different take, which essentially boils down to the fact that, quite often, there _is no_ readily identifiable or discernible 'motive' for real-life crimes of that sort. Personally, I find the idea of someone randomly committing wholesale slaughter for no particular reason ('just because', as it were) far more terrifying than the actions of one who, while obviously disturbed, is operating in service of a clear and demonstrable 'mission'. To illustrate this in terms of fictional villains, think, for example, of the shadowy, silent, inscrutable Michael Myers in John Carpenter's original _Halloween_ versus his portrayal in Rob Zombie's 2007 remake. In the original film, we don't know _why_ Myers is doing the things he's doing or 'what went wrong'; only that he is essentially an embodiment of evil (an impression reinforced by the film's end credits, wherein the character is listed not as 'Michael Myers', but as 'The Shape'). In Mr Zombie's remake of the film, he elects to delve extensively into the backstory of Myers, highlighting specific childhood incidents and living conditions which 'shaped' him (no pun intended). While undoubtedly well-intentioned on Zombie's part, this was, in my opinion, a mistake, and serves only to 'de-fang' the character, reducing him to just 'a guy'. (Granted, a bit of that had already occurred prior to 2007 thanks to some of the sequels to the original, but I think most would agree that Zombie ramped things up to another level entirely). It may also bear mentioning that 'Cain Rose Up' was clearly inspired by the real-life case of Charles Whitman (the 'Texas Tower Sniper'), whose specific motives (apart from generalised findings of 'mental illness' and 'homicidal ideation') remain unclear to this day.
Jeeeez Bryan! Way to make me completely reevaluate everything I said about this story! You make some solid points and the use of the Halloween franchise as an example really drove your overall message home. Very well thought out man! I suppose I was predominantly looking at it from character development angle. Who is this guy? What’s his deal? While I don’t mind having to fill in those blanks with my imagination, I guess I just want to know more of what King was trying to say, if anything. But you’re right, sometimes no explanation is just as, if not more, unsettling.
Great vid, I agree with your ranking of the stories, but I think you might've missed a story, one called Gramma. Also, I hope the surgery for your wife goes well, and like I said at the covid vid, take your time, don't worry about posting a vid next week, you and your wife's health matter
Holy shit!!! You’re absolutely right. Son of a biscuit. That’s a creepy ass story too. Thanks Grim. I’m sitting in the hospital next to my sleeping wife as we speak. She is in recovery and will likely be here another day or two before she can go home. Surgery went well though, just hoping this puts an end to her health problems.
Skeleton crew is one of my favorite Stephen King short story collections, my favorite story in there being the mist. The only story I didn't like in there was Here there be tygers, which I thought was a nothing story
In Here There be Tygers the little kid is actually in the bathroom when he sees the tiger. And the teacher follows him there. I believe it’s also King’s first story written when he was like 10 or so.
Gah!!! Yep. I went back and listened again. I’m not sure how I managed to mess up a short summary for a ten minute read, but somehow I did. Thanks for the correction!
Hey Todd! You are 100% correct. I somehow neglected to include it in my ranking. I mentioned it in the next video I released, which I believe was for The Mist. But yeah, you’re absolutely right.
I have read all but the new Holly novel. I’m working my way through every single book, movie, story, but I re-read and watch everything before I make a video to make sure it’s fresh in my mind. I will 100% be doing Storm of the Century!
@@agreatundertaking I will try to find it. I recently watched a ton of kings lectures/talks and interviews. He was talking about how when he was a young kid there was a time when he was embarrassed to announce to the classroom that he had to use the bathroom. Then, one day as a young father, his young son (I think it was Joe), was upset and explained to him that he was embarrassed because he had to pee and he didn’t want to tell the class. So of course king explained to him why he needn’t be embarrassed and then he went and wrote that story.
Thank you! Such a relatable experience for me. When I was in grade school I saw a small group of older bullies in the bathroom harassing and picking on another kid because he was pooping. After that I was afraid to use the bathroom at school for years. I appreciate you taking the time to fill me in on the background. There are SO many King interviews so don’t worry about digging through all of them to track that one down.
Many well wishes for a speedy recovery for your wife. Loved the mist and the creatures within. Another weirdly placed sex scene in this one too but hey the world is ending what the hell
Thanks, Ryan. Should be able to take her home from the hospital today. Yeah, the sex scene in The Mist is upsetting to me. It just makes me dislike the protagonist. Makes no sense to me. 🤷🏻♂️
I don’t know about this dude but if I’m on a raft about to die the only thing on my mind is hopefully getting laid one last time. But that’s just me 🤷🏽♂️
