Y’know there is a reason why The Miracle at the Meadowlands is historically considered one of THE worst football plays of all time and here we are all this time later with coaches not learning from it and wanting to repeat it.
I believe at the time (1970s) kneeling wasn't common place and there was a real chance that perhaps the play would be blown up, the refs would call some BS, etc. so just running it up the middle was the norm at the time.
THIS IS NOT MARIO'S FIRST TIME: (2018) With Oregon leading 31-28 at home and the ball near midfield, Cristobal could have had Herbert kneel to run the clock down to 16 or fewer seconds before punting. (Stanford had one timeout left.) Instead, he had CJ Verdell run on 2nd-and-2. The call looked entirely reasonable at the moment, but the redshirt freshman fumbled. Stanford took possession with 51 seconds left and drove to the tying field goal as time expired. The Cardinal won 38-31 in overtime on Colby Parkinson’s juggling touchdown catch and Alameen Murphy’s interception.
That wasn’t really Mario’s fault. A lot of bad things can happen on a punt (e.g. MSU-UM). I didn’t blame him for wanting to end the game there by getting 2 yards. Tonight was EGREGIOUS. This is ALL on Cristobal and the OC.
My favorite part about watching this game live was the fact that one of the announcers didn't even realize the opportunity to get into victory formation until just seconds before Miami's final run. It was honestly a glitch in the matrix.
@@Bubbles088Yeah but live they were doing the math out loud just seconds before the video footage started. You would think that with it being second down with under 80 seconds remaining there would be no need to run a play.

I can't believe this. I switched to other games once Miami got the first down and GT was out of time outs. It wasn't until I saw the score on the bottom line that I found out what happened. Unreal. On top of the fumble, that was absolutely atrocious defense on the last drive.
I mean, even a casual football fan knows to just take a knee in that situation. How can a coach at a major college program not know? That's simply inexcusable.
@@michaeldoesfunstuff4992 true, though they should know to keep everything in front of them, especially the safeties. Even so, that's also on coaching, to make sure they are properly positioned as well.
One year later, the entire Tech crowd at Bobby Dodd was mocking them with a hilariously ironic, "Take A Knee!" chant as the Jackets clinched the win with one last first down. First time that the numerous Miami fans got really PO'd. Is there an emoji for an upside down "U"?
Classic Cristobal. Great recruiter, gets good coaches around him, clueless in the 4th quarter. Did the same thing with Oregon and Stanford forced a fumble and won the game on a fg
well, Miami was losing basically the whole game this time. Haynes King's arm was shot this year (shoulder injury), but wow he is some kind of winner. I hope his shoulder gets better.
Rewatching this as a Canes fan, emotions aside, the fact that GT went 74 yards in 24 seconds with no timeouts is sick. Dumb running the ball, yes and Jessie said that. The defensive collapse was worse than the fumble. SMH.
The best part was that the announcer's comments weren't just hindsight. He was commenting before the fumble that they ought not to be running the ball.
Yepp samething happened Oregon vs Stanford. End of the game fumble by Oregon, Stanford scores last sec field goal to win. Costs Oregon playoff chance. Bad coaching
Duck here. When Cristobol went bye bye, I was like, "Meh. Not really that good. We can do better than that." Gotta wonder what his reasoning was for not taking a knee twice, and the win.

That loss yesterday just set your program back 5 years at least. It's the same ol ND. Shit offense and a team that would NEVER be able to hold it's own in a conference. Louisville is NOT a good team.
I rewatched the last play that Miami had the ball. There were less than 40 seconds left. GT had no time outs left. The rule is, take a knee and let the time run off towards 0:00. Now! That was something I've never seen before. Even the Detroit Lions have never done that in my life time!
And to think this is Mario’s second time doing this. He didn’t learn from the first time. Loses all credibility for this. Can’t trust a thing he says as a coach
@@KDTHAPHENOM In my football fandom life, the Lions seemed to always find ways to lose games. Hail mary passes & really long field goals by opponents, among other ways to lose. But never by this method of stupidity.
I'm a lifelong diehard BAMA fan but keep up with shyt, the worse thing I seen the lions do was a long long time ago, I remember when they went into a OT game vs maybe the giants or somebody, I forget, but they won the toss and deferred, the other team won, it was sudden death rules at that time, that was dumb to not take the ball first, but this clock management by Cristobal/Miami was even dumber
Yep, that's pure Cristobal game management meltdown for you right there. As an Oregon fan, we've seen this too many times, he would always drop a couple games in the dumbest fashion or be too stubborn in his coaching philosophy to adjust to the game at hand. So not surprised he choked right here, it was bound to happen sooner or later. He may be an ace recruiter, but as a head coach he's so so, game management has always been his Achilles heel.
Believe me us fans stay at home BECUASE of performances like this. Miami is a big city with way better things to do then go watch Miami choke a victory
Miami needs to move out of a pro stadium and look into getting a smaller college stadium to get some kind of atmosphere going. Even when they’re winning Canes home games are soulless.
Notre Dame did something like this @ home against Northwestern in 2014! Up 3, had the ball in NU territory, NU had no timeouts w 1:30 remaining. ND runs instead of kneeling, fumbles, NU scores and wins in overtime. Incredible.
I never thought I’d see a worse coaching decision at this level than Les Miles not getting the kicking unit on the field and just letting the clock expire…but this is infinitely worse. This will never be topped - we’ve just witnessed the dumbest coaching decision in college football for all time
This is the type of loss that literally destroys program credibility from recruiting to the locker room... and prevents them from ever taking that next step under this head coach! The coach just sealed his fate with the Miami Hurricanes even if it's a year or 2 down the line!
Yep I mean look at the Miami player at the end throwing his helmet off. They know they should've won the game and the head coach who's paid millions of dollars lost it. Yea you can say the defense should've stopped them....true but they never should've been in that position to begin with. Sad part is Cristobal did this 4 years ago with Oregon and got the same result. Makes you wonder is he really this stupid or did he just get paid some damn good money to do this.
Very well said had they stayed undefeated. Recruiting class gets better but just like you said they see a stupid ass mistake like this. What the hell is that coach thinking
@@tigergirlkitaCristobal has always had trouble with clock management, *espeically* at the end of games. Also, I think Miami just got cocky/greedy and it bit them in the ass. I like the point you made about how Miami should have never been in that position. People can blame the defense or say the fumble should have been overturned, but Miami should never have had 4 turnovers. Ultimately, a win or loss is the summation of an entire game, not just a single moment that changes the direction of that game.
@Michael-on3ku EXACTLY - well said. I roll my eyes every time a fan tries to pin down a loss to *one* play (or a coach in this case; Cristobal petitioned the NCAA after this game, whining about the called fumble). Miami had _multiple_ chances to put this game away, but instead allowed GT to keep it close until a couple missteps were all it took for GT to steal one on the road. Clearly, GT was the better team that day, and they deserved to win this game.

Went away to continue watching Caleb vs arizona, came back and saw the face mask on 2nd and 5 and I face palmed and turned the game off. 5 minutes later I check the final score only to see 15 seconds left with the ball in HAYNES KINGs hands… throws an absolute dart for the game. Left me so confused as to how they got the ball back. They showed the fumble and I dropped to my knees.
As an Oregon fan I can say that Cristobal was a great recruiter but average coach and was even worse when it came to clock management. I'm so glad Miami took him off of our hands and things worked out the way they did.
Wow. In the words of Jack Buck, for entirely different reasons, "I can't believe what I just saw". The Georgia Tech WR who caught the winning pass, almost pulled a Desean Jackson by sliding to early and almost went feet first. Could you imagine if the marked him short? He got it no question, but that would have been interesting.
I was watching this game in my apartment at Georgia Tech last night and I swear I should’ve gotten a noise complaint lol. An ugly win but an amazing effort from our Jackets!!!!!!
This ending is criminal negligence by the coaching staff of Miami. They had the game in their pocket and inexplicably insisted in running the ball, and lost the football, and the game.
I wonder if Cristobal had money on this game or if he knew someone who did. It's hard to imagine a coach being that stupid. But I forgot he's basically done this before
My mom always complains when they kneel. I roll my eyes and say you don’t understand football. Thank you Miami. I no longer have to explain hypothetically why kneeling is smart.
does Miami spend all their time trying to perfect the most niche scenarios and forget to care of the basics? that was one of the best desperation lateral sequences I've ever seen, but it only happened because of some of the most stupid clock management

GT defense played incredibly in this, and both offense and defense did unbelievably in 2nd half...Bowling Green had won by 11, with GT's defense getting blown out.
My 1st thought was that msu/Michigan punt block a few years ago but this was worse imo. Like they had the game won and even then had to mess it up 3-4 other ways and that’s exactly what they did. Just wow.
@@IndyJones31 Ironically enough i was at that game 🙃 Michigan had to get a first down in order to run the clock. They didn't..you know the rest. These mfs literally had to just kneel out the clock lol
@@IndyJones31 Looking at that play, everything that had to go right for MSU, did. If the ball bounces differently, and wasn't scooped right up by MSU, they don't score, and Michigan wins.
This has happened before. In video games. When you're too proud to take a knee because you hate the game was too close, and end up throwing an INT. Then the next play they miraculously catch a hail mary and somehow break 3 tackles to get in the end zone. Not that his has ever happened to me.
Reminds me back in the 1999 when Baylor tried to run for a TD with a few seconds on the clock at like the 10 or something. They fumbled at the one and Kevin Thomas ran it back for a TD to win the game. I remember listening w/ my dad and him going crazy. What a stupid coaching decision.
We’re coming up on the start of the 2024 season and the fact that Mario Cristobal is _still_ the head coach of Miami is almost as insane to me as his play-calling on that last drive. How was he not run out of town wearing only tar and feathers after this game?
I thought the Patriots losing on a dumb lateral play to the Raiders last season was the stupidest way to lose a football game that I’ve ever seen, but I think this tops that. I can’t imagine these Miami players will continue to play for Cristobal after this.
Or don't defend the sidelines when the offense has time outs or grab the WRs at the snap. McDermott ruined the most clutch QB play in history, more like McChoke.
I scrolled a long way to see this comment….there is a really good case to be made for a replay as the runner is down when a slide starts. That was razor close.

I'm just revisiting this, and I forgot that it was on third down that the fumble happened. Miami tempted fate twice, and twice they were forgiven. Georgia Tech's defense wasn't good at defending, but it was good at creating turnovers, and you can ever hear the commentators anticipating what was about to unfold in confusion and horror.

Yep, same here. First thing that came to mind for me too. Just... wow
I believe at the time (1970s) kneeling wasn't common place and there was a real chance that perhaps the play would be blown up, the refs would call some BS, etc. so just running it up the middle was the norm at the time.
@@NickyDusse that is a fair point indeed. I've heard that too. So this that Miami did is far more inexcusable than the Giants
THIS IS NOT MARIO'S FIRST TIME:
(2018)
With Oregon leading 31-28 at home and the ball near midfield, Cristobal could have had Herbert kneel to run the clock down to 16 or fewer seconds before punting. (Stanford had one timeout left.)
Instead, he had CJ Verdell run on 2nd-and-2. The call looked entirely reasonable at the moment, but the redshirt freshman fumbled. Stanford took possession with 51 seconds left and drove to the tying field goal as time expired. The Cardinal won 38-31 in overtime on Colby Parkinson’s juggling touchdown catch and Alameen Murphy’s interception.
so damn happy cristobal is out of oregon
That is insane he gotta be investigated at this point there’s no way someone does this by accident
What are the odds I feel Mario us bad luck dawg😂
That wasn’t really Mario’s fault. A lot of bad things can happen on a punt (e.g. MSU-UM). I didn’t blame him for wanting to end the game there by getting 2 yards.
Tonight was EGREGIOUS. This is ALL on Cristobal and the OC.
How did he not learn from that?
One year later, GT got to kneel the ball to beat undefeated Miami again.
My favorite part about watching this game live was the fact that one of the announcers didn't even realize the opportunity to get into victory formation until just seconds before Miami's final run. It was honestly a glitch in the matrix.
This is a statistical anomaly
They did realize it lol at 1:25
@@Bubbles088Yeah but live they were doing the math out loud just seconds before the video footage started. You would think that with it being second down with under 80 seconds remaining there would be no need to run a play.
They're announcers. That isn't their job. It IS a coach's job however. Not sure why you think they didn't realize though, they talked about it. 🤷🏼♂️
@@benji3900 I'm well aware of that but I think most people watching picked up on the fact that there were less than 80 seconds remaining on second down. The point is that it was funny watching it live, I'm not trying to shame anyone.

I mean, even a casual football fan knows to just take a knee in that situation. How can a coach at a major college program not know? That's simply inexcusable.
I don't blame Miami defense players. They didn't expect themselves to get on the field again!
