I just happened across your videos because I like aviation RUclips, I work in IT. Your videos are making me seriously consider a career change. Your content is great.
I was a Director at an IT company. Made a ton of money, was great at my job, and was bored to death. I’m now a flight student, getting my hours, and looking forward to what’s ahead. If I can do it, you can too.
Dont do it!! I tried getting into the aviation world, even made it into a "good" school to study flying. The truth is, most pilots (at the arirline/corporate level) are extremely competitive, and they will try to "take you out" (between checkrides, exams or even good ole gossip). I was really shocked, actually. Thats the side of aviation, none of these youtubers talk about. Dont wanna discourage you, but you need to take your head out of the clouds, and tread very carefully, cuz youre gonna easily spend a 100 grand...
After doing a lot of research...I've come to the same conclusion. Going to a regional first is a good strategy. Great training, newer equipment, camaraderie, money, etc. I'm also discovering many major 121 operators will offer a cash bonus (and match pay) for applicants that have previous 121 (regional) experience.
Check with your local National Guard. I just read someone else’s comment and did Utah, according to him, national guard will pay for your flight training.
Great video Trent! I want to thank you for creating this channel. Your videos were the catalyst for me exploring aviation again. After considering it for a couple months now, I have started my own journey to getting an ATP license. I’ve even even started my own channel to document my journey. Again, I don’t know if I would’ve done any of this without your inspiration. Thanks again. 👊🏻
Hey Brad, that is so cool to hear!! I’m rooting for your success :) Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment!
Hi Trent! Great video! Would you ever consider a "What's in my flight bag video" with recommendations for products? I am just starting flight school and I think it would be great for people to have some insight from you on this. Clearly you are very knowledgeable and honest about what one would actually need as opposed to all the generic lists online.

Great video as always Trent! There are always a few negative Nancys out there that seem to chime in whenever anyone does something just a wee bit different. I thought this was kind of fun actually. I'm glad you took the time (as well as your editor) to change things up a bit. Good on you bud. Sounds like you are kicking some serious flying time butt. Such a great source of inspiration for me...
Hello! I'm also a career 2.0 pilot. I'm currently a Traffic Watch pilot in Southern California.I just got hired to SkyWest last week and I'm waiting for a training date! I found your channel around the same time while I was looking for more info! I'm so excited to start. Looking forward to following your journey as well!
You might have spent some time on Cargo jobs. Seems like a good alternative to regionals while also getting you into bigger jets that the airlines might like to see you fly.
Hey Trent, I absolutely love your channel and videos! I’m about to be typed on the Challenger 350 at a 135 company at 20 years old and I absolutely love it! Hope you get to your 1500 real soon!
Hey did you needed 1500 hours to get typed for a challenger 350? I’m debating where to be CFI and get my hours but if I can fly a 350 like that then I might just do that.
We’ll researched and a good video, Trent. The big takeaway is, one must understand the differences-which you described quite accurately, in order to decide which way to go-121 or 135 (sometimes 91 or 125 charge). I’ve known many career pilots, doing all the above. For me, at age 15.5, I took my first lesson. At age 16 I did a report in junior high, about what I wanted to do for a living. I got out the big catalog of careers book, started at the beginning, got to airline pilot. I liked what I read, did my report (getting an A), then proceeded to do what it took to get there. Got most all of my ratings (never a CFI🙏🏻), F/E and ATP written, then job hopped. I ferried, flew sightseeing, flew cargo in a single, flew on a turbo prop for a rich family, flew light twins for a small corporation, the copilot on a commuter Beech 99. All good experience, and I developed good interview skills. At age 25.5, I was hired by a major, and was copilot in DC-9’s! Was furloughed for 2 years. Progressed through the ranks over time, getting on wide body international copilot, narrow body captain then wide body international captain. I loved everything about it, made lotsa money and had great schedules and benefits. Had to hang it up after 40 years at my airline, at age 65. IMHO, there is no better job than having a career at a major airline! Nowadays with fancy jets flying 135, that could be good, as well. But all things considered, major 121 is better, FWIW
Hey Trent. I am 22, and I dont really know what i want as a career. I took aerospace engineering in my stem course in high school and was given an opportunity to get a type of flying license. i have always felt like i should have tried to convince my parents to let me. I think im gonna try and give this a shot.
Part 91 for a great company is far and away the best. I love flying but I don't want to be scheduled for 85 hours/month. You also don't have to retire at 65.
Thanks for reinforcing my interest in the 135 world! I'm starting career 2.0 after 20 years of aviation maintenance in the military. Tired of fixing, want to fly.
As always Trent 🛫🇺🇸✌🏼 these are the best videos on the Internet today for the 2.0 guys. I personally would have discussed more of the top end salaries of 135 and 121 and average length of time to achieve them but other than that you're hitting on all cylinders 👔 ty as always my friend and please.. keep us informed on all your educational progress. ATP ECT ECT. Thank you and have a great weekend 💪🏼
I think this is a great overview of all these topics. I’ve been trying to do this research and as always, time is at a premium trying to CFI and work the full time career 1.0 job. I would be curious to see you delve into a couple of these topics a bit deeper. For example, the pay structure in 121 is something I can’t seem to get a clear grasp on. Also, how the different schedules actually work with duty days and dead-heading and such. I’m leaning towards 135 and this video kinda bolsters that thought process. Thanks for the info and keep it up!!!
Im thinking about making the switch from rotor wing to fixed wing as a career. It kinda feels like a 2.0 career. Im leaning toward the part 135 because it still give me the variety that im used to in the rotor wing world.
When watching the video, I love the idea of networking in the business world while flying as a pilot. Pilot/Entrepreneur. There is a guy in RUclips called Fly with Owen. If there is a way I can get to his type of life, that would be amazing. I would need to network and I hope I can get to that position where I am making alot of money and vacationing with like minded people. I think doing destination 225 will allow me to dip my toes in corporate and see if I want to become a contract pilot or go with Southwest. What's your thoughts on that idea?
I recently met a couple of NetJets pilots and they were very happy working there. It sounded quite good to me…. especially if the new contract gets ratified.
I stumbled across this page a couple weeks ago Trent. Enjoy this video as the others, but I feel like there were a couple points that could’ve been more detailed. For example the schedule, I’m a GLEX (global express) pilot and I fly internationally mostly on my 2 week on 2 week off rotation. Out of curiosity was curious on how the 121 schedule looks like. But other than great vid man!
Trent thank you for your videos for us 2.0 guys. Highly informative. Suggestion only: A 2.0 version for the severely age stricken. Aka flying after age 60-65. Netjets or 135 on demand and of course flight instruction… Lastly I would think your experience as a CEO as a separate video set would be highly valuable to entrepreneurs. Anyway…Nicely Done ✅
You said everything right at the end. Go 121 for the hours and experience at minimum, then go 135 if you want. Or you may find yourself loving 121. Me personally, I’m wanna go 135 or 91, but plan on going 121 first for the experience and benefits (and possibly sign on bonus). Maybe I’ll like it enough to stay. Time will tell 😊
Really felt like you were saying 135, but really you were talking about part 91 for a rich family/ internal company flight department. Part 135 is typically the 2 weeks on 2 weeks off crowd like NextJet. Part 91 is more like the ad-hoc whatever the owner wants to do type of flying.
And now the student becomes the teacher... Start at 121 and then move to 135.... = 131😉 , If your ever Fly into Heber City, Id love to take you to lunch, Cheers , Dave @@trent_dyrsmid
The only part of this video that referenced part 91 was when I talked about my party that worked for the rich people. I miss spoken should’ve called that part 91.
Considering a 2.0 career change. What's a realistic timeframe for getting your private pilot license to a part 121 pilot, as well as the cost incurred? Love your channel.
Depending on how one did in career 1.0, I suppose many should really consider a retirement strategy. For some, career 2.0 ( flying) is the sole retirement strategy. The earnings should go a long way to provide for for retirement savings... But do the employers cover any retirement benefits? Do regionals, airlines, cargo carriers (Many of which are unionized) have retirement plans of sorts? Id be interested in what others thoughts are on this.
I would say how rooted are where you live? Lets say you live in Seattle. I would go 121 all day. Lots of airlines with that base.. Now lets say you are rooted in Montana.. i would go Fractional 135.. no commute.. In short. No commute is key to QOL. Trent your BOI? 121 is a good option SkyWest has great schedules out of there!! And it’s a Jr base..
Why am I getting the feeling that right now based on the industry the Part 135 side is the one that's still actively hiring and training new pilots while Part 121 has a lot of things to sort out before it can continue?
Is it possible to be an airplane pilot, helicopter pilot, hot air balloon pilot, glider pilot, glider pilot, airship pilot, and tandem skydive instructor for a job at the same time?
Hi Trent, big fan of the channel, so this comment is made with all the love I have for the content you produce! I’m not a big fan of the b-rolls and the pop-ups along the video. Why? it’s distracting and doesn’t fit with the channel’s “feel” overall. I mean, maybe you or the editing team thought it was funny and enjoyable, and if so, you absolutely do you, but for anyone who’s been following the channel for a little longer, this is not reaaally it. I’m no editing expert, but i’m a big content consumer. I’d say, this format is good for short form content, to grab the attention. It works on instagram, tiktok or shorts but right here, it doesn’t add any value, and instead of reeling viewers in, it pulls them out. Part of it is due to the quality of the b-rolls and pop-ups chosen. Honestly, pretty cheap looking. If we’re trying to adopt this catchier vibe, then it should be as highly designed as the thumbnail. And sparingly used please, not every second. It should add an emphasis to important points. Other thing, your audience probably isn’t really into all the flashy and trendy stuff. A clean shot of you talking from start to finish will attract more career 2.0 guys. I say clean shot because the color grading is off in this video too, compared to the previous ones. I’m not even halfway through the video, and this is my feedback so far. (6:20) I’m sure you’re just trying new things, so i’ll finish watching the video first and stop running my mouth, but I thought it’d be okay to let you know. edit: okay, tough watch. And it’s no hate to the editors, but (regular) viewers expect a certain standard when it comes to this channels content. To cut to the chase: the editing is cheap. No taste in what or how things were added. In my humble opinion, what I’d do: zoom out a little, wider angle on the shot. Add overlay text WHEN needed (over you talking) and please, just embed clickable chapters as usual. Do not cut the pace of the video each time. Just one smooth go over everything, no break in between topics as you’re talking. I don’t know what the brief on this one was, and if you ever need feedback again, I’m subscribed, i’ll be there but you can always reach out.
Your feedback was professional and well received. For this video, my editor asked me for free reign to come up with what he thought would generate the most views. When I first watched it, I thought it was a little over-the-top, but I love to experiment and let the results speak for themselves. The performance of the video in terms of views so far has been quite good, but you are not the first one to leave a comment, saying that it had too many beeps and buzzes in the editing.
Out of curiosity, wouldn’t it be technically easier to get to the airlines? Let’s say I want to fly corporate or charter, most companies wouldn’t hire someone who only flew only on Piper single prop planes. But if you get the 1500 and get hired at the regionals they’ll pay for your type rating and engine training. Sooooo i don’t know lol
As I consider a career change, the topic of family is the biggest roadblock between my wife and I (having 2 young children). From this video, and other research I've done, it seems like a Part 135 pilot might be what I should shoot for for the time being. I am curious to see how the process is to get there vs the airlines. I know airlines have the cadet programs, which provides a pathway as you train, but Part 135 seems to be more random? More like an actual job.
...more coffee & less spandex ~ you are funny, brother! You content is just like a buttery landing ~ pleasant, smooth & goes down easy! You rock! 💥✨️✈️👍
Yes, once you get 15:00 and you have an ATP you can work for a regional. After working for regional for somewhere around a year you’ll have the thousand hours of turbine time and most of the majors like to see in your logbook.
Good video and I agree with almost all of your facts and figures. I especially liked your conclusion; getting part 121 experience is gold for a career aviator due to the mostly twin turbine time and quality of training. Being a career pilot currently in the industry I know that your starting salary figures are a little off and this is the part I think needs to be corrected. Starting salary in a 121 operation is not $120,000 but more like $70,000. Don't be deceived by the "total compensation value" that companies publish. I'm going into 5 years as a professional aviator and have done the typical, CFII to 135 cargo route and am looking at about $70,000 for the next step as a part 121 FO or $130,000 as a part 135 Captain. As we speak the hiring stampede has started to slow especially in the part 121 world and some majors have completely stopped hiring from outside and are only taking pilots from their regional affiliates and making room for all the reserve FO to move into line positions. Some newly hired FOs are looking at reserve positions that could last for a year. All pilots have to make career specific decisions based on their own experience and knowing themselves as to what kind of flying is for them. Do you mind hanging out in airports for multiple days a month, would you rather drive to work even if it's a 200 mile drive? Do you have a family that prefers you not be away from home for more than a week at a time? Do you want the jump seat privileges that an airline provides because you like to travel or are you happy with routine and staying closure to home. If you take the financial considerations completely out of the picture, and have to luxury to do that, what flight operations do you truly want to dedicate your life to?
Do Pt 135 pilot/crew or their family members have access to the “free or low cost” travel privileges available to Pt 121 pilots/ crew/family members? That is or could be a significant factor in one’s decision making in path selection.
@@trent_dyrsmid Thanks. Only reason I asked is my CSIP mentioned to me his plans to soon work for a Part 91 family, then your video launched the following day and made me curious.
There are 121 cargo airlines (UPS and Fed Ex and Atlas…). Then there are FAR part 125 cargo airlines /second tier (I’m unfamiliar, as I haven’t researched)
@@trent_dyrsmid I’ve seen a couple. Good stuff. I’m beginning my channel on aviation content. I have GA Helo to military then law enforcement to part 121…. Seeing how people put stuff together.
@@wmwnwmn 80k is on the anomaly side. Especially when you talk about an SIC position. Southern Airways SIC pay is $12 an hour….captain pay at Boutique is low to mid 40s annually, $32k for SIC, Planesense, not too far away in salary with SIC around 40k, Contour Air, $36-44k for an SIC position. Tradewind pays the most at 50k for an SIC position in the PC-12.
@@dr.aviatorflexjet is over $100k for first year FO. Atlas, kalita, Omni are in the $80k range for first year FO and hire low-ish time pilots. Seems like 135 operations have a wide spectrum of pay
Trent, great videos in the past but the editing in this one is too much. Too much animations makes it look unprofessional and like TikTok, super unnecessary so please change it back to how it was done before.
Bro, love the channel, but whoever you hired to write these scripts (hopefully not AI), fire them. Love the informative nature of the channel, but these constant insertions of ‘witty’ one liners make the entire video a cringefest and difficult to listen to. Just stick to the information people want to hear.
Not liking the new format here. The extra video snips are dumb and annoying, had to say it. 121 pilots don’t hang in the airport lounge either. You should also start the video explaining that you are a 500 hour CFII and this was a Chat GTP developed story. Hate to sound harsh but I think i’m done watching.
Ok, see ya! (Btw….were you drunk and grumpy when you left this comment? I ask only because yours was a complete dick comment. “If you don’t have anything nice to say….”)

Lastly I would think your experience as a CEO as a separate video set would be highly valuable to entrepreneurs. Anyway…Nicely Done ✅
Some good suggestions. Thank you so much for watching!
Trevor…Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment!
Let's go! ✈️✈️✈️
Where are we going? 🤣
Excellent Excellent
Glad you liked it!
Really felt like you were saying 135, but really you were talking about part 91 for a rich family/ internal company flight department. Part 135 is typically the 2 weeks on 2 weeks off crowd like NextJet. Part 91 is more like the ad-hoc whatever the owner wants to do type of flying.
Right you are!
Another great video, do I sense a leaning towards 131 ?
There is no 131 :)
Leaning towards 121!
And now the student becomes the teacher... Start at 121 and then move to 135.... = 131😉
, If your ever Fly into Heber City, Id love to take you to lunch, Cheers , Dave @@trent_dyrsmid
Thx Dave!
Great information Trent. Your videos are always informative and helpful. Being an older individual 50+… Would Part 121 be a better option?
That’s really a personal choice, but with that said, my opinion is that for me, it is the better option.
I think you mixed in 135 and 91 ops together. They’re very different, especially on their schedules.
The only part of this video that referenced part 91 was when I talked about my party that worked for the rich people. I miss spoken should’ve called that part 91.
Trent would you recommend AVIER flying school Beverly in Massachusetts? Thats where I’m trying to go
Never heard of them. That doesn’t mean they are in a good school. They might be an absolutely terrific school. I am just not familiar with them.
Considering a 2.0 career change. What's a realistic timeframe for getting your private pilot license to a part 121 pilot, as well as the cost incurred? Love your channel.
The average cost to CFI from zero is north of $80k and most folks need a year of full time training.
Yes, they all do.
Exaaaactly why my goal is Skywest!
"Up in the air feeling" I see what you did there. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Why am I getting the feeling that right now based on the industry the Part 135 side is the one that's still actively hiring and training new pilots while Part 121 has a lot of things to sort out before it can continue?
Mostly because part 135 isn’t flying Boeing aircraft.
Is it possible to be an airplane pilot, helicopter pilot, hot air balloon pilot, glider pilot, glider pilot, airship pilot, and tandem skydive instructor for a job at the same time?
Possible
I’m sure you’re just trying new things, so i’ll finish watching the video first and stop running my mouth, but I thought it’d be okay to let you know.
edit: okay, tough watch.
It's great, but definitely hard to cater all the advice beyond the US. Flying and careers in Canada can be very different and limited!
Unfortunately, yes.
Would you say that your buddy is actually flying part 91 and not part 135?
Yes, my bad. He’s part 91.
Agree. My plan is definitely to go to the airlines.
Every part 135 is unique and based on my experience as well as that of others I have spoken with, NETWORKING is the key to getting a good 135 job.
@@trent_dyrsmid Thanks Trent!
🙌
...more coffee & less spandex ~ you are funny, brother! You content is just like a buttery landing ~ pleasant, smooth & goes down easy! You rock! 💥✨️✈️👍
More to come!
How does the Regional career work? Wouldn't you need the 1500 ATP to get that job? How can one use that to get 1000 hours?
Yes, once you get 15:00 and you have an ATP you can work for a regional. After working for regional for somewhere around a year you’ll have the thousand hours of turbine time and most of the majors like to see in your logbook.
i am interested in knowing if you know of any pilots who have suffered a stroke and was able to get medical clearance to fly again
I haven’t heard of that. Sry.
FlexJet seems like the most attractive place to me personally.
🙌 Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment!
Always wonderful to hear from a pilot working in the trenches and willing to share the details on what’s actually happening. Thanks for the insights!
what is a career 2.0? 🤔
It refers to people starting a new career after having a previous career in another industry.
👍
Hey, thanks for the explanation guys... I guess soon i'll be joining the career 2.0 club? I'm currently an A&P...
@@AntD891 Well to the club 🙌🏻

Do Pt 135 pilot/crew or their family members have access to the “free or low cost” travel privileges available to Pt 121 pilots/ crew/family members? That is or could be a significant factor in one’s decision making in path selection.
I don’t know. Bet Google or forums does though.
Where does Part 91 fit into this mix?
Part 91 is flying for a rich person. I misspoke about my buddy. He’s doing part 91 not part 135, for the most part.
@@trent_dyrsmid Thanks. Only reason I asked is my CSIP mentioned to me his plans to soon work for a Part 91 family, then your video launched the following day and made me curious.
✈️
I’m thinking cargo stuff. Is that 121 or 135 or something else
There are 121 cargo airlines (UPS and Fed Ex and Atlas…). Then there are FAR part 125 cargo airlines /second tier (I’m unfamiliar, as I haven’t researched)
Correct. Part 121.
@flywithtrent are you currently 121 or 135?
I’m a CFI on my way to part 121. I guess you’re new to my channel and haven’t watched any of my videos?
@@trent_dyrsmid I’ve seen a couple. Good stuff. I’m beginning my channel on aviation content. I have GA Helo to military then law enforcement to part 121…. Seeing how people put stuff together.
@@trent_dyrsmid I also notice your eyes track like you are reading a teleprompter. Is that for your script? What equipment do you use?
Yes, I do use a Teleprompter in some of my videos. It is nothing special. Just a regular run-of-the-mill Teleprompter.
@@trent_dyrsmid any recommendations?
How many hours do you usually need to get hired at part 135 is 1500 hours as well?
As far as I know, it varies by operator.
$80k for Part 135 are FEW and FAR between brother. Ie: the Boutiques, Southern Airways, Planesense, and Tradewinds of the industry.
Are you saying that is on the high side or low side of the pay scale?
@@wmwnwmn 80k is on the anomaly side. Especially when you talk about an SIC position. Southern Airways SIC pay is $12 an hour….captain pay at Boutique is low to mid 40s annually, $32k for SIC, Planesense, not too far away in salary with SIC around 40k, Contour Air, $36-44k for an SIC position. Tradewind pays the most at 50k for an SIC position in the PC-12.
That’s why I suggested in the video that everyone that watches do their own research and not take my word for the pay rates.
@@dr.aviatorflexjet is over $100k for first year FO. Atlas, kalita, Omni are in the $80k range for first year FO and hire low-ish time pilots. Seems like 135 operations have a wide spectrum of pay
@@wmwnwmn I know but look at their minimum times for right seat. Most of them want you at ATP minimums at the very least.
Good ol Kevin Mcgalocker
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment. It all helps my channel to grow and help more guys/gals like us!!
Cargo all the way 😎
🙌
One big plus for major 121 operators is that they have great loss of medical protection
👍 Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment!
I feel you left out part 91. If your G280 buddy loves his job so much it’s probably 91 and not 135.
You’re right, he’s actually part 91. My bad.
👍
👍👍
Trent, great videos in the past but the editing in this one is too much. Too much animations makes it look unprofessional and like TikTok, super unnecessary so please change it back to how it was done before.
It was an experiment. Appreciate your feedback.
It doesn’t matter where you work when you are over 55 years old, the main thing is that you get hired…😢

Between all the cute analogies and snippets, couldn't understand what this vid is all about...
Sorry to hear that. Summary: part 121 vs 135 is a personal choice.
Bro, love the channel, but whoever you hired to write these scripts (hopefully not AI), fire them. Love the informative nature of the channel, but these constant insertions of ‘witty’ one liners make the entire video a cringefest and difficult to listen to. Just stick to the information people want to hear.
Thanks so much for watching one of my videos! I really appreciate you taking a moment to comment!
Not liking the new format here. The extra video snips are dumb and annoying, had to say it. 121 pilots don’t hang in the airport lounge either. You should also start the video explaining that you are a 500 hour CFII and this was a Chat GTP
developed story. Hate to sound harsh but I think i’m done watching.
Ok, see ya! (Btw….were you drunk and grumpy when you left this comment? I ask only because yours was a complete dick comment. “If you don’t have anything nice to say….”)
