I have been playing piccolo now for almost 10 years and I only recently learned not to pour so much air into it. Dr. Burt could not be more right on this stuff. Thanks for the video. Good luck with your playing!

My band director in 7th grade played a piccolo trumpet and would play lines for us. I loved it and always wanted to transition from the b flat trumpet to the piccolo. Loved it.
I was talking to my friend Byron Autry about Piccolo Trumpet playing, and this confirms some of the things he told me. Nice Video! Nice control and excellent sound!
thank you Jack for these tips. Just bought the YTR-6810S Piccolo Trumpet(30 y/o horn) from and Retired Professor, and your instruction has been helpful.
I have no experience with wind instruments. But, I really want to try to learn the trumpet. Especially after I discovered the famous Trumpet concerto by Hayden. Improvisations on a trumpet just seem so fun to do. One day :(

@@ruslannunez4449 Guys, chill out :) It's just some lighthearted humor. Sorry your respective senses of humor are broken. Being too serious about something difficult like this will eat you alive.
Good question, thats a common misconception. You have basically the same range on a piccolo as you do on the soprano register horns (C/Bb/A etc.) Work on range on your trumpet first before branching to picc, it helps so much, try to get the upper register (about Bb to high G above the staff) to almost sing. The goal to prep for the picc is not to "scream" on the trumpet but to sing the upper register, you'll find it will also require less air in time for the tone. Hope this helps!
Well now Schagerl builds the Berlin Piccolo, which I also play and am absolutely overwhelmed by everything it does and I can do with it, and in that video Jack Burt obviously plays a Scherzer, quite sure a 8111, you can find them on Thomann and other stores
I dont know because in my b flat trumpet i have denis wick 4c which is shallow but there is only one size more shallow mouthpiece and i dont know to buy it for piccolo or no
He has another video that talks about the differences between rotary and valve trumpets and the benefits. I am became very curious to try a rotary trumpet after watching that video bc the French horn is my 2nd instrument [ I ve only played rotary fr. Horn.]. The action is different in a rotary and I can see how it would be more responsive.
I have Getzen BbA four valve and have been having air compression pains. So much so that I have to release air or feel like I'm going to blow up!!!! I tried your shallow air a few minutes ago and it seems to be better. I am a lead trpt with a big band and am used to blowing my brains out. I use a Bach 10.5C with the bore bored out with a #23 drill as suggested by the ITG. My lungs hold at least 2500ML when I use the Hospital breath exerciser I got from the Hospital. You inhale when using this and I can "Pin" the arrow to the top. I have tried a Warbureton with a 4M cup and a #11 shank. But always returned to the Bach. Also my picc experience indicated the Picc plays better with the A shank. You can use the Picc in A when playing a D concert number which would put you in E =4# on the Bb . If you use the A shank, you play up a half note so that you trade 4# for one flat. It makes the trills easier. Finally I've heard of a Picc in C as if Bb isn't hard enough. Have you ever heard of a Picc in C?
I’m also a euphie haha. But i can play the trumpet and picc. It just takes practice. And yes its possible to have 2 different embrochures. Sometimeswhen i have to play really high on my euphie. I use a trumpet embrochure haha. And it works. 😄
soma the n00b how is it useless? In Europe, rotary valves are the main contender in instrument design as piston valves are in North America. It just varies in the comfort and personal preference.

It veries on the receiver
No, most piccolos use mouthpieces that have a coronet-sized shank or "receiver" as Ozzy calls it.

Why the piccolo trumpet look like a crossbreed of a trumpet and a French horn
It almost sounds like a violin in some ways
in which way?
Well, can't you hear it sounds like a violin?
In the vibrations of the air, way.
More like a flute...
When playing fast notes I suppose.
You really need a sound proof room to practice horns, neighbors won't be happy..
Step One ...find a hall with plenty of reverb....

Um is it too high bc im sensitive to high sounds
Nah I’d rather hear that trumpet part from Jurassic Park

shouldn't need a mute for a wife, if she don't like guys that hit the high notes she needs to move out lol ;)

Bach, Händel and Telemann are NOT piccolo music. It's just a bit more convenient than a huge natural trumpet :)
