Jett Mills his technical skills are very advanced. But his tone and range are practically beginner level, that's because he's not much of trumpet player.
Thank you, Trent of 8 years ago, for this video. I ordered a piccolo trumpet and hope to get it next week. I searched for a video of yours in order to find out the interval by which the fourth valve lowers the pitch, and you came through. A minor quibble is that this instrument did not exist in the Baroque era and the high trumpet parts were played on much longer natural instruments (without valves). "Tromba" and "clarino" were, in fact, the same instrument, but played in different registers with respect to its harmonic series. They came in different sizes, but I'm pretty sure never in such a small size. For various reasons, the clarino went out of fashion. The clarinet was developed as a replacement, hence the name. Piccolo trumpets are often called "Bach trumpets" but this is a misnomer, since they have absolutely nothing to do with Bach. I wouldn't say it's exactly an abomination to use them in a performance of Baroque music, especially if other modern instruments are being used, but I think original instruments would be preferable. Unfortunately, that's not always so easy.

I feel that your knowledge of the instruments on its own should get you at least 2,000,000 subscribers. Im rambling here, but i want you to know that you have my upmost respect and that you are truly the king of music on youtube.
It's possibly because he is not from the USA (I believe he is a New Zealander). I have seen many deserving people with surprisingly few subscribers who don't get as much clicks or attention because they are from Italy, Germany, etc. Sadly, RUclips seems to prioritize people from the USA, which I think is unfair.
I bought a piccolo trumpet, and indded with the standard mouthpieces it does not play easier the higher octave Bb4-Bb5 compared to the standard trumpet . BUT then I realized that the fault is in the mouthpieces and I bought small mouthpieces of 11mm-14,4.mm diameter from resin or acorn that are normally used for wooden cornetti musical instruments , AND THE MIRACLE HAPPENED ! Playing the Bb4-Bb5 octave became almost as easy as playing the Bb3-Bb4 octave in the standard trumpet.
During my music summer school in the early-to-mid 1970s, at one point one of the band directors, a trumpeter, called out to whomever might be listening: "some people say the piccolo trumpet is hard to play. That's not true at all: IT'S DAMNED NEAR IMPOSSIBLE,"
Thank you for your videos...my grandson is thinking about lessons but not sure between wind and brass...leaning towards brass so listen and seeing these videos are fantastic.
Out of curiosity how does your cornet/trumpet upper range translate to this? So lets say I am reasonably fine playing top C on cornet, roughly what do you think I could expect to hit when using piccolo?
The piccolo trumpet doesn't necessarily make high notes easier, it just makes them more tuneful (at least, that's the theory). A top C on a trumpet is an equivalent difficulty to a C (one octave lower) on a piccolo trumpet.
Personally, I find it easier to play high notes on the smaller instruments - like a piccolo trumpet or a soprano cornet, but then my upper range is pretty terrible. I think for someone with a good upper range, it's true that they won't necessarily get any higher, but for someone who struggles to play above the stave on a normal sized trumpet or cornet (guilty), the smaller instruments can make it easier. I find those notes are easier to get, and easier to keep playing later into the practice session. It could just be the result of using a shallower mouthpiece, of course. I can get a bit higher on a Bb or C trumpet or Bb cornet by using something ridiculously shallow, like a 7D, but then the lower range suffers, and it just doesn't feel right. You also need less air to play high notes on the smaller instruments though, so that helps with duration.
Based on the fact that I can get roughly as high on cornet (not my instrument, I was just playing my friends a few weeks ago) as I can on my baritone I would expect you could probably hit top c on piccolo trumpet?
Thanks for the time you put into videos.. You give me inspiration to continue to get better and I play from Tuba-Piccolo tpt and some saxophone. I haven't gotten really into tbn due to nature of the slide but I'll get there. Thanks for what you do :)
Would it be possible for you to provide a link to where to purchase the horn? My interest has certainly be peaked, and I would rather appreciate the information. Thanks!
in the late 80s i bought a new getzen 3 valve capri piccilo trumpet and a capri flugel horn on a combo special purchase. i was well satisfied with both but i found i could play my old severinsen getzen easier in the same high range by changing the mouthpiece and tuning slide so i traded the piccolo trumpet off. i lived in a big college town so selling it was no problem.if i had bought a 4 valve piccolo trumpet i might have kept it.. my experience is if you dont have a high range with a full size trumpet you wont have one with a piccolo trumpet either. i found the regular sized trumpet was easier to play in that high range so that wqas a supprize to me.
the history would be hard work and dedication, but since all of the valve combinations would be practically the same across everything that is valved in the brass world (tuba, eupho, trumpet, french horn, valve trombone, etc.) then if you know the key of the instrument you can play it
do be honest i actually liked your playing on the piccolo trumpet a little better than the original trumpet. You should working on learning it some more! I would like to hear more of this instrument.
Unfortunately the piccolotrumpet made the cornetto ( it has a corpus of wood with seven holes, similar to the recorder, but has a mouthpiece smaller than at normal for trumpets and a very lovely sound less trompety rather a bit going in the direction of the sound of an oboe). If you haven't ever heard of the cornetto instrument and have a greater interest in brass instruments and instruments working the same way I very much recommend you to look it up!
Major props, while I have played trumpet for the past 9 years, and have a regular gig in a rock/blues band, at no point have I ever attempted piccolo trumpet. That you have the sheer nads to attempt it garners major respect. In spite of the fact you are a low brass player, and therefore supposedly beneath my notice, JK!
I already put a comment on your trumpet and coronet comparison video with my full thanks and admiration, but thanks. And also you should have way more subscribers.
Thanks mate. Hopefully I'll get them in time. The content I produce is of limited interest to the general population, so I don't expect a massive subscriber base.
Thank you for this video. You have educated those among us who are musically illiterate and didn't know the trumpet in Penny Lane was of the piccolo variety.
Hey Trent! I'm fairly new to your channel and I have to say that I'm very much enjoying the content. Trumpet is my weapon of choice, so easy enough to say I very much enjoyed this video. Keep at it!
Penny lane. I play trombone. I carry a pocket trumpet. They wrote penny lane because they were introduced to the movie said pocket trumpet. They meant piccolo trumpet. Some of that stuff you played there sounded great. I play with love but I can't read trumpet music to save a life.
Hello Trent. I played my middle school and I have a very big interest in the trumpet. And I was looking for a Piccolo trumpet in the key of B-flat but I’m not sure which one to buy. You’re probably not gonna see this
I am 16. I play trumpet in my school band and extra audition band I got into in grade 10. We play level 4-6 and it is hard but fun. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about piccolo instruments. She just got a Eb clarinet. Well this new song we got we are basically on playing notes between c and a c above the staff. It's pretty difficult to play, it's graded at a 5 1/2 so im struggling. I really want to try a piccolo trumpet just to see what it's like. It's adorable and I would love to try one 😊
My 2¢. A piccolo trumpet is difficult to play well. Most people overblow them. Do they make playing high easier? Yes, in a way. The same notes on a regular trumpet are closer together and hard to hit and hold whereas the piccolo is using a different part of the harmonic series - down a octave where the notes are farther apart - so starting on a high note is less risky. But ultimately, the note you blow into the mouthpiece is still the note that comes out the other end (if you have the right fingers down.) If you can't buzz a double G into the mouthpiece, the horn won't help you a lot. It's not a substitute for playing high in a jazz band horn section either, since the tone is different and won't blend as well as playing high on a regular horn. Trent mentioned that they come in A. Indeed, many come with different lead pipes so you can change from Bb to A at will. This is important because many Baroque trumpet tunes are in D. This puts them in the key of E for a Bb trumpet, not the easiest of keys. But lower the horn another half step to A, and now you're in the wonderful key of F, the easiest of keys to play - even easier than C. Also because of where the piccolo is in its harmonic series, all the awkward trills that don't work on a standard horn because the fingerings become alternate fingerings for other notes (G at the top of the staff can be fingered 1-2 or 3 alone so trilling often produces the same note rather than the desired A upper note) come out easy as pie. And you should trill 3rd space C with the 4th valve. It's much easier than trilling 1-3.
I would love to see you play this pics with your Kelly Screamer. That mouthpiece is designed for upper register work and could make your pic playing REALLY GOOD!
trent youi should see about saving for a monnet trumpet and review it.its expensive, like 10,000 u.s. dollars, but it's definitely worth the money from what iv seen.
I'm thinking of getting a Piccolo trumpet.... been playing for years and I tap out two or three whole steps above where the fingering chart ends at high F. I've reached the conclusion, yes I can play that high but the notes might never be useful. On my B-flat trumpet the high E, the third note in series to be played open, is arguably the last useful note. (That high F at the end of the carnival of Venice is perfectly doable) But the high G above that, again played open, is just way to airy to be useful. Maybe it's just me. idk thoughts? I also have a C trumpet, something I picked up because I got tired of running into flutes and pianos in the key of C... that thing taps out at the high E. (It's a generic Chinese Trumpet knock off) It can play high F but hitting the high F/G (One octave above the last bar-line) on it are like hitting a strike in bowling, in that your lips and air are just right.
If you can play a G above top C on a standard Bb Trumpet you have a slightly better range than me, I can play D (or sometimes and Eb when I'm doing scales to warm up) above top C. Working on improving my range though
Is it hard to play? Like compared to a trumpet?? Does it have a similar mouthpiece? Like do u know the size of there is one? The mouthpiece I use is a jazz one which is 11B4 but I also have a 7c-
Thing is with the picc is you have to back off the horn... when we try to play higher we usually go full flegde with more air.... no can do with the picc. You think trumpet is hard? try the picc! :D
Where exactly did you get this amazing instrument? Because this has really interested me. Plus it sounds as if it's the "keyboard" out of the like trumpet brand family. I want to learn more about this instrument, and how to play it You know and where to get it from.
what's your main instrument you're so talented to be able to switch between them like this so effortlessly, are there any negatives you notice from doing it. and also just wanted to throw a few video ideas out there could you do one on embouchure and one on vibrato.

why do I keep watching these videos, I don't even care about trumpets lol
He's the Bob Ross of Kiwi brass instrument reviewers, that's why
You tried for that double G on the piccolo trumpet but you were like “mmm nope”😂😂
If I’ve got some extra money, should I get a flugelhorn or a piccolo trumpet?
I just want all the piccolo instruments. I’m starting a new collection.
If you want to hear truely superb picolo trumpet playing, listen to Mathias Hoffs ( German Brass ).

Where exactly did you get this amazing instrument?
Because this has really interested me.
Plus it sounds as if it's the "keyboard" out of the like trumpet brand family.
I want to learn more about this instrument, and how to play it
You know and where to get it from.
Nothing quite like a Trumpet and a Conga on the Beach.
That picc has some interesting intonation.
The face when the fourth valve locks HAHAHAHA
My Third valve in my b flat trumpet is as well behaved as your fourth valve!
what's your main instrument you're so talented to be able to switch between them like this so effortlessly, are there any negatives you notice from doing it. and also just wanted to throw a few video ideas out there could you do one on embouchure and one on vibrato.

Why does it have a pinky hook if you have to use four fingers for four valves?
