    It’s not Japanese, it’s a Korean Film that’s part of the Vengeance Trilogy: 3 separate, unrelated stories that show the downfall of seeking revenge on everyone involved.
    The same director just had a show on MAX called “The Sympathizer”.

    FYI, this movie has a very different setting from the original Japanese comics/manga, except that the main character is imprisoned for several years (Japanese comics: 10 years, movie: 15 years) and then released.
    For example, 1) In Japanese comics, Mido is not Oh Dae-su's daughter.
    2) In Japanese comics, Lee Woo-jin's older sister does not exist at all. In other words, the love between Lee Woo-jin and his older sister is a completely recreated setting in the movie.
    3) Regarding 2), the reason why Lee Woo-jin imprisoned Oh Dae-su for 15 years (10 years in the comics) is very strange in the original comics. To sum it up very briefly, it's because Oh Dae-su shed tears when Lee Woo-jin, a classmate of Oh Dae-su, sang the song in elementary school music class.

    He wanted oldboy to feel how he's been feeling. Right or wrong, he blames Oldboy for everything; taking his sister/lover away. He wanted to take everything oldboy cherished away from him and be tortured by it for life. Oldboy's ultimate punishment is to not be able to ever love who he loves; not as a father and not as a lover. That's the hell oldboy has to live.

    these 2 young love birds, the boy, probably 16, the girl, 17, fell in love with each other at this small town high school, i guess and they found each other extremely appealing, even tho they're brothers and sisters, couldn't help but end up crossing the line at the school, as they probably couldn't do that at home, where their parents were, so empty high school on a saturday after noon or sunday, must have been their secret thang, you know, until our man, dae-soo, accidently spotted them, leaving for seoul, the capital, let his best friend know about his finding, the rumor got out, she was treated as a pervert / whore / slut, etc and got pregnant, ended up killing herself at the dam, where she asked her lover to remember her, the boy must've vowed to avenge her death.
    tho the audience know it's not dae-soo, but his friend, who has spread the rumor, but as far as the villain knows , it's dae-soo, who have spotted them in that empty science lab, so, i guess it's fair for this korean joker to set a trap for dae-soo, instead of his friend.
    there's a hollywood remake by spike lee. i've heard good things about old boy, but couldn't find the movie when i've realised that there's a free hollywood version on you tube, so, i ended up watching that, you know, to practice my english and all. with all due respect, hollwood version is ... well ... there's a hilarious comparison video by YMS (your movie sucks) i watch that video whenever i feel down. it's extremely funny and it deserves a medal. it's that funny

    33:06 there’s no real message, it’s just a shocking story for the sake of a shocking story. The Japanese specifically have refined the craft of telling F-d up stories in the last 30-40 years with Anime and Manga.

      Well, you do not need to agree with everything and understand all details, but that does not justify being ignorant of things… .😅 They do have reasons more than just making people shocked, reasons to put in a lot of efforts in it. That might not be delivered to someone who can’t even figure out where it came from - it’s actually a korean movie, and arguably japan also make some good stuffs still..

      @@pomni8696 I mentioned Japan because they’re Far more notorious than Korea for making stories like this. Korea is Definitely not known for making ‘shocking’ stories….Japan is. If you get some deep meaning from this movie, good for you. 99% of people who watch this won’t care.

    • @pomni8696
      @pomni8696 10 дней назад

      @@ValisX By "getting some deep meaning," you seem to expect a straightforward, verbally describable meaning, which is common from a Western viewpoint. However, some acclaimed Asian movies focus more on "impressions"-impressions of human beings and their lives, even if things do not make sense in a rigorous, linguistic way. For richer contexts, the director described the genre as comedy. Counterintuitive, isn't it? But it definitely appeals through humor and narrative moments, like the phrase, "Laugh, and the world laughs with you."
      We hurt or are hurt by others through small things, and think about vengeance and violence. The collective struggle is devastating for individuals but funny from a distance. The movie exaggerates this perspective, allowing us to more "clearly" see how we actually live. You say 99% of people won’t care about this, but nope-people cannot like a movie just because it contains "shocking" and graphic depictions. They indeed get the impression on the inside, even if they can’t verbally describe it. If you cannot get the impression, you might rather be on the 1% who does not really experienced the true essence of life's struggles.
      I don’t think Japanese are particularly notorious for making shocking stories. Historically, they simply had more money than Koreans, had more opportunities to push farther wherever they go, and then produce a larger volume of work, which are either beautiful or shallow. Any culture that rises in prominence goes through this experience. I have seen plenty of message-less movies from Hollywood or France, especially nowadays, but I wouldn’t attribute that to their entire industries.
