How to Edit the Settings in an FMS Reflex Gyro - 13 Feb 2024

- Here's a fairly quick video on how I edit the settings in an FMS Reflex gyro when I want to install one in a non-FMS plane. Be sure to use an FMS model that is most like the non-FMS plane that you're wanting to put the Reflex gyro in. The gyro gains should be close, but the control surface movement and/or the gyro direction could be reversed. Get the surfaces moving in the correct direction by setting the channel reversing in your transmitter first and then check to see that the gyro moves the surfaces in the proper direction as you rotate the plane through each axis.
Note: I made this video before the V3 came out. You can use this technique with the V3 as well. Just connect it to your PC using a UBS cable.

Thank you so much, it worked and i'm computer illiterate. Incidently, you could sell sand to the arabs with that voice.
@@patdiviney7630 Thanks, but I can't stand my voice.. 😎
Thanks much. This video is a savior.
Thank you very much. Your video was clear and very helpful! it save me an incredible time!
Thanks for the video it was a great help 👍
Hi. Very helpful, I had to reverse the ailerons on my fms 1450mm v6 p51d mustang. Do you know how to change the standard mode order in the settings files at all, I want to swap the stabilzed and optimised over. Thanks
@@ENGDyna You can change it in your transmitter. Just edit what the values are in each switch position or reverse the channel if you want to swap what the end positions are.
@txkflier I have it set with the gear retracts channel but it just won't swap. I've got a mix that turns it off in the mix switch on my dx6i. If I reverse the gear channel it'll open gears soon as add battery power. Strange. I have no problem using the gear and mix switch with hobbyeagles and lemonrx stab+
@@ENGDyna You have retracts and flight modes on the same channel?
@txkflier yeah on 3 of the planes I use with retracts. I prefer to take off with autolevel with gears down then once I flip them up it's Gyro only. For some reason I can't swap that over in reflex, I can adjust using 0 - or +100 no problem with hobbyeagle and a lemonrx stab+ i have. Strange. I'm assuming there's a parem setting in the files to swap it around
@@ENGDyna I don't recall a way to change the flight modes in the Reflex. The Hobby Eagle is a much better option. I wouldn't buy a Reflex, and I won't be reprogramming one that came out of an FMS plane. I did buy one of the newer V3 Reflex gyros and wasn't impressed with their app. Fortunately, I was able to return it and got my money back.
Thanks for that. I didn’t think gyro direction could be adjusted.
Pretty much everything can be adjusted, but it takes a bit of trial and error.
Just a noob's question. I'm not at all familiar with this gyro but from our experience with other Chinesium gyro systems, they pretty well all seem to operate the same way. At about 1.30 you mention to first check that the sticks are driving the servos the right way THEN start to check how the Reflex unit drives the servos under the Self-levelling. This is usually a No-No since, for most of the ones that we use (Kopilot lite/Lefei Sparrow/Radiolink Byme-A/etc) reversing the gyro correction direction ALSO reverses the radio stick direction. Reversing the radio stick direction has NO effect on the gyro correction direction. Hence leave the radio alone until the gyro corrections are fixed. Or do these operate differently?
I've slept since I last checked, but the Reflex and Hobby Eagle gyro reversing setting only reverses the gyro, not the stick direction. But, I'd double-check everything after any change.
Also you seem to have the same (incorrect?) set-up order mentioned in both your own pinned comment above and the description.
@@theoztreecrasher2647That’s probably because that’s how it worked when I tested it. Have you set one up?
@@txkflier We don't have a Reflex unit to test. We do have 2 HobbyEagle A3 Super 4 and Minis but haven't set them up yet. 1 of our Old Farts Group did have an A3 Pro that he promptly destroyed by having it incorrectly set up - an all too common event with us geriatrics!
We (or myself) are WAY more experienced with the other Chinesium units mentioned above - and they DO work as described above. When we get around to installing 1 of the Minis I'll get back to you with the results.
Edit. Now that I think of it, someone does have an FMS SuperEZ that must be fitted stock with some sort of Reflex unit - but I've no idea which version. Nobody ever tried fiddling with it anyhow.
@@theoztreecrasher2647 I have set up and flown both the A3 Super 4 and the A3 Mini..
Hello , Thanks a lot for your Video, could you tell me pls which setting is for the sensibility of the gyro ? many Thanks

How is the computer connected to the gyro? How is data transferred, by cable or WiFi?
I made that video for the V2, so you have to use the cable that came with the V2. You can do the same thing with the V3 because it still has a USB port and uses the same configuration file. They just added Bluetooth to the V3.
Hi, My reflex v2 in sbus mode whit frsky receiver x8r don't work channel 5 to change mode. Work only whit pwn wiring. (NO FMS Plane) Can You set sbus default to work? In the manual is write the wiring are any different to work in sbus or pmw. My case don't work. You have solution thanks.🖐
Try setting “tmp5” to 0 (tmp5=0). Supposedly, a 0 is channel 5 and a 1 is channel 7. If your transmitter has 7 channels, I would leave it set to 1 and use channel 7.
Thanks, I tried to put both channels 5 and 6 and 7 on the radio on a 3-position switch. By connecting to sbus it worked on channel 7 without needing to modify with note++. Instead I had to edit channel 1 Ail, as the response of reflex2 was inverted. Thank you.👍🖐
@@MrSalvoFly Since most of my planes use 6 channels, my standard flight mode channel is channel 7 and gain is on channel 8, if used. I use a template or copy an existing model when adding a new model. I’m very “standardized”.
I Wonder ,must i have fms plane to use this gyro ?
Most people should. This video was an attempt to show how to use the Reflex in a non-FMS plane. So, if you've watched it, you how difficult the process is, and we still don't exactly know what all the settings do. I bought a Reflex V3 that's easier to configure, but it died and I returned it. I don't recommend the Reflex to anyone. Get a Hobby Eagle A3 Super 4 instead or perhaps a Spektrum Smart AS3X/SAFE receiver.
The thing that is really wonky with this software is the fact that there is a graph showing the gyro response, but when it is updated with the new param.dll file telling it to reverse a direction, it does not show the response in the reverse direction. How stupid is that? I don't know, maybe it's simply not loading the new settings into the reflex unit. I have a V2 with the Pitts data inside of it. I had to update the servo's to a different brand of digital servo's and every channel was reversed in my radio. Of course the gyro now was not acting in the correct direction. I tried to follow this, and the V2 software doesn't work at all. The V3 software does connect and populates the data showing current version and serial number, but it won't change gyro direction when I follow the advice in this video. I'm baffled why the changes wouldn't show up on the graph at all. What is the purpose of the graph if it doesn't show the gyro amplitude of signal and direction???
I never looked at the graph. I checked to make sure the control surfaces moved in the proper direction with the transmitter sticks and then I checked to make sure the gyro moved the surfaces in the proper direction. If the gyro was reversed I toggled the direction value in the config file, wrote the updated file to the gyro, and checked everything again.
@@txkflier I was hoping that's all I needed to do as well, but apparently there is something wrong with the current software and or my unit. The reflex worked perfectly with the original servo's installed. I keep getting an error "Index out of range" which in software usually means an array value is being referenced that doesn't exist for a given size of array. This makes me think that the param.dll file is somehow corrupted with bad data. I even tried to use the V2 param.dll file using the V3 software to do the update, but that did not work either. I was so excited when I seen your video and thought it would be relatively painless. Is there any chance you can test this out again and see if the graph changes direction of the gyro? The only other thing I can think of is that the current version of this software has a bug in it. Well, I have had enough of this very limited gyro. For those that got it working after modifications or changing planes, good luck to you. I went ahead and pulled the AR630 out of my new SUS and put it into the Pitts. Now I have AS3X+ in the Pitts.
@ Yeah, there are much better gyros than the Reflex. The Hobby Eagle A3 Super 4 works well and is easy to program. I’d rather use the Spektrum Smart AS3X/SAFE receivers. They work great, have telemetry, and can be programmed from the transmitter.
