I'm a 3rd year psychology major; it's healthier mentally to claim you are confident even if you aren't, in that moment. If you do that enough (while truly believing it, you can't do it just for the cameras, you have to want to be what you claim), it will start to help your overall mood and the way you carry yourself. Same goes for people with depression, even if you aren't happy, simply smiling will help your mood.
The acknowledgement of your past efforts and to play to the best of your abilities based on aforementioned efforts in essence is confidence. I also like how Thorin brings out Eastern philosophies. Become water my friend.
Loved the message of the video. Similar to what my coach tells our team, "play to win the game instead of trying to not lose." That confidence comes from knowing subconsciously that no matter what the other guy/guys do that you still can overcome it. The thousands of hours of hardwork prior makes the pressure situations seem comfortable creates confidence.
This is cool stuff and a great philosophy not to just have in gaming but all aspects of life. Work out what's holding you back and deal with that head on and from there the confidence grows! cheers Thooorin you lovely ginger bellend
i think what people really mean by 'confidence' as being an advantage, is they mean morale it's no superstition that being in a good mood gives you an advantage whether you have the skill or not
I agree with Thooorin in that there is solid evidence that confidence alone will never win you games, I'm an average csgo player with the biggest confidence in the world but I still get smashed half the time. What you need first and foremost is the ability to be able to win, then confidence is what allows you to play at your highest level.
The Dunning-Kruger effect suggests that the more competent you are the more you realize that there is a lot to learn therefore making you "less confident" than someone who is less competent but does'nt realize it. Personally I was more confident about my skills in League when I was bronze than when I got to gold and realized that I'm never going pro.
When people talk about confidence I always think this way. It's almost like the casters can't realize that mind games don't matter if you can't get the points on the board."
+Aria Confidence is something everyone desires, the zone is total confidence and complete flow and you can only achieve it by being excellent, and excellence can only be achieved through practice.
I'm skeptical of the "pure mind" idea, at least in excess. Detachment (essentially the perspective in question) runs counter to passion, but passion is often a key contributor to motivation. So it's a double edge; get too detached about the game and you stop caring, and at that point where's the drive to push yourself to be at your best? Seems to me the ideal is a well juggled balance of the two (which arguably some of the best players achieve a measure of).
I don't agree with that. In my opinion, you should use your passion to motivate yourself to practice, then whilst practicing and playing matches you should detach yourself from everything but the mechanical aspects of the game to reach excellence. Passion can do much more harm than it can do good.
Oliver c: That *is* the kind of balance I was thinking of :P. Using the passion where it's constructive (motivation to practice and improve, desire to win), putting it aside where it gets in the way (middle of a match).
But confidence also depends on the player's self-esteem as well doesn't it? If you're in a team environment and someone tells you that you're wrong in what ur doing or ur losing and u can't figure out what ur mistakes are stemming from then of course ur going to lose confidence. Being skilled and refined will build confidence but self-esteem and will can affect how that confidence will stick.
Another big problem for me personally is anxiety....I would absolutely demolish everything on any server, but when I'm in the game that matters, it's like my skill completely disappears. I practice a lot and I know some of my limits, but it rarely pays off. Occasionally I get a 4-5k in the pistol round and I drop an easy 40 Bomb throughout the game. But that's like 1 in 10 games...
Really, the best way to deal with anxiety is to constantly put yourself in situations that make you anxious in my experience; I personally used to be afraid of conflict, but after constantly putting myself in arguments I now feel comfortable taking them.

Some times I wonder how Thooorin finds so many way to ad alphadraft. He comes up with better 1-2m talking ads than most commercials nowadays.
+Saiakaa Intelligent mind, and good emotional/talking skills. :)
Whenever he isn't making a video he's showering to get these intros
The acknowledgement of your past efforts and to play to the best of your abilities based on aforementioned efforts in essence is confidence. I also like how Thorin brings out Eastern philosophies. Become water my friend.
People are talking about the intro, which was nice btw, but the video itself made so much sense. Great stuff Thorin.

What sport/game do you play? Curious.
This is perfect since Luminosity's two amazing comebacks today. Talk about building confidence on one side and crush it on the other.
But liquid was confident enough to get to map point, then STILL confident enough to get map point on the second map...confidence wasn't the problem

You're the counter pit hype guy's biggest fan.
No, I am :)
So confidence is pretty much like being "in the zone" for them
You gain confidence from bein in the zone.
Oliver c: I guess so, but confidence is something you build, "the zone" is something you desire.
+Aria Confidence is something everyone desires, the zone is total confidence and complete flow and you can only achieve it by being excellent, and excellence can only be achieved through practice.
Oliver c: I dont believe you can control the zone, thats just me tho
"Confidence, its the food of the wise man, but the liquor of the fool." -That telemarketer guy from the Office
You could just make one video about the fallacies of cause and effect and be done with all these topics :).
