I just had a dream a week ago of a huge asteroid falling and dropping the earth in front of me while I was walking down a neighborhood, the colors around it were bright blue and yellow/orange fire colors. It was beautiful, the dream felt very detailed and in that moment I stop to watch and saw it hit and I was noticing the shockwave approaching me, fast but also slowly. At that moment I felt a little scared but also accepted my death and just thank God for everything. Decided to hide behind the wall of a house. Apparently I had survived. After that I may have had a different dream or maybe a continuation of it, this one a little more random. But I dreamed that maybe after the impact, i survived and now There were small vertically long spaceships dropping in front of me and there was many small bat like creature that were killing and devouring people around me. I decided to hide in a trash container with no lid and just waited there for hours and hours and I was just contemplating the sky and the stars.

6:30 that's not necessarily true. Sure, if the variables in place when these measurements were made hold true and *nothing* changes between now and then, it won't be life threatening. But that's a lot of time for things to happen. Its orbit could change from gravity tugs coming from other objects, its mass could change altering its trajectory. Back when it was first predicted to have the possibility of striking Earth in 2036 there was talk of developing a method to deflect its path away from Earth with thrusters planted on its surface, a nearby space prob giving it a gravitational tug, etc. Now that it’s no longer predicted to hit us, has all ambition to develop such a protective system been thrown back in the dumpster? Apophis is around 200 meters long and certainly not big enough to wipe out the Earth. The Meteorite that killed the dinosaurs was 12km long. Unless it lands within 100 ks or so you'll be OK, anyone inside that will get fucked up.

It’s possible that this rock has been circling our galaxy and passing us for eons and each time it does it gets closer it’s now close enough for us to see it and I believe one day it will hit us.
It would cause an event similar to a small scale nuclear war. The area of impact would be evacuated beforehand. This would cause damaging effects to our climate and crops for a few years, but nothing near an extinction event. It’s just not large enough to cause that. Will suck for wherever it hits (although it probably won’t hit)

I just had a dream a week ago of a huge asteroid falling and dropping the earth in front of me while I was walking down a neighborhood, the colors around it were bright blue and yellow/orange fire colors. It was beautiful, the dream felt very detailed and in that moment I stop to watch and saw it hit and I was noticing the shockwave approaching me, fast but also slowly. At that moment I felt a little scared but also accepted my death and just thank God for everything. Decided to hide behind the wall of a house. Apparently I had survived. After that I may have had a different dream or maybe a continuation of it, this one a little more random. But I dreamed that maybe after the impact, i survived and now There were small vertically long spaceships dropping in front of me and there was many small bat like creature that were killing and devouring people around me. I decided to hide in a trash container with no lid and just waited there for hours and hours and I was just contemplating the sky and the stars.
Worked for a printing company in the early 90s. One day we were printing the covers for time magazine that had a picture of this asteroid and doomsday graphics saying it would hit in 2029. But the name they gave it then was wormwood. The run was canceled half way thru the shift and we never heard about it again.

But that's a lot of time for things to happen. Its orbit could change from gravity tugs coming from other objects, its mass could change altering its trajectory. Back when it was first predicted to have the possibility of striking Earth in 2036 there was talk of developing a method to deflect its path away from Earth with thrusters planted on its surface, a nearby space prob giving it a gravitational tug, etc. Now that it’s no longer predicted to hit us, has all ambition to develop such a protective system been thrown back in the dumpster? Apophis is around 200 meters long and certainly not big enough to wipe out the Earth. The Meteorite that killed the dinosaurs was 12km long. Unless it lands within 100 ks or so you'll be OK, anyone inside that will get fucked up.

It’s possible that this rock has been circling our galaxy and passing us for eons and each time it does it gets closer it’s now close enough for us to see it and I believe one day it will hit us.
It would cause an event similar to a small scale nuclear war. The area of impact would be evacuated beforehand. This would cause damaging effects to our climate and crops for a few years, but nothing near an extinction event. It’s just not large enough to cause that. Will suck for wherever it hits (although it probably won’t hit)

What if an asteroid that size were to collide with the moon?
We would then have two moons.
Asteroid impacts moon, creates large crater , stuff from crater goes up into space making hundreds if not thousands of small fragments heading straight for earth, causing worldwide catastrophe.

Seriously, though, I don’t see why a 2 megaton nuke wouldn’t deflect Apophis. 370 meters is nowhere close to a mile, and nukes can obliterate cities that are less than a mile across. All that is needed is to move Apophis a bit to send it away from its keyhole.
problem with that is what if it DOESN'T incinerate it? then you'd have 30 or 40 10 meter chunks raining down on earth, still gonna fuck shit up.

The 2029 passage has Apophis passing harmlessly 31,000 km north of the Earth's north pole. Regarding the 2068 passage, revised modeling indicates a 1 chance in 256,000 of an earth strike.

I had a daydream/not sure if I was fully asleep- a huge asteroid coming at me as it hit it shocked me awake
So did I was driving back home from the market saw a great light in the sky got out of the car. There was a field and I was just standing there staring at it . Suddenly there was a flash and it was quiet and everything was full light then I woke up. It was very odd and I now hold that dream as memory . I haven’t forgotten it.

If the orbital path is the same direction and close to the same speed wouldn't this minimize the impact speed thus reducing the energy?
Yes, indeed, but a smaller relative speed between the two objects will make a collision much more likely, since the Earth's gravity has more of an impact on Apophis' trajectory (it can "pull" it in easier since it will spend more time in Earth's gravity).
