Silver Stacking and Coin Collecting in Japan with King Richard

  • In this video I talk with King Richard about his recent trip to Japan and how the Japanese coin shops compare to coins shops in America. In Japan there is a tax on silver although this can be avoided in some cases. Coin collecting in Japan has about the same popularity as coin collecting in America. There is such a thing as Japanese junk silver coins. Some coins in Japan are very collectible and can be worth a great deal of money. Does is make sense to stack silver in Japan. If you live in Japan should you be coin collecting or stack silver? These are some of the things that we go over in this video.

Good interview. I wish you'd invited Richard to show more coins. I just love learning about them. I wonder if he's ever run into WWII vets who had Japanese coins. I knew a man in the Midwest who brought back a couple of cigar boxes full of 19th and early 20th century Japanese coins after serving in the Occupation. And a shout-out to Richard for being able to run a calculator upside down over the counter. That is a small super-power.

Living in Japan and stacking and collecting here for the past 8 years, it’s definitely different. Silver isn’t valued as much as gold generally in society so you don’t see a lot of bullion for sale. I’ve been buying US constitution silver here for below melt for years because of that reason. It’s tough for the dealers to move it so it’s priced cheap. You can find some amazing deals on Japanese numismatic stuff, some really beautiful coinage and to think about the history and hands it’s passed through, and almost everything is raw.

    日本のコインを紹介して下さって有り難うございます。
Thank very much for introducing Japanese coins!!
In Japan, there are lots of the counterfeits made in China.
This seems to be a big problem.
Most coin shops are reliable, but
it is hard to find coin shops especially in rural areas. Even if you can find it,
pricing is not good. Most Japanese collector get coins at the large coin festivals held in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka.

The first coin is a taisho 14year 50 sen coin. .720 Silver content. I'm living in Japan at the moment and doing some stacking. More difficult to get silver at good price but I have been buying Junk Silver and some Japanese coins at a decent price. Takes some work on auctions.
They don't do stacking here. I think most are just numismatic collectors. Some do buy gold but major metals outlets will only have gold and only sell silver in larger amounts.

Tony is right, but just to add on that the Bank of Japan mint doesn't make any sovereign coins. They make some commemoratives, but they are usually priced very high.
The vast majority of the sets they sell are just proofs of the standard currency, no precious metal in them.

I have a U.S. 20 dollar African note with the gold seal. My Great uncle was carrying it during WW2 when he was killed in France. It's has blood on it and it also has 16 signatures of other soldiers that were there when he got killed is my understanding why it was signed. My grandpa was less than a mile away from him when he got killed also serving during WW2. After the fact he was brought over and got to see his body before it was taken off the war field. I believe that we're he may have gotten the 20 dollar bill I am not sure though he died before I was born, so what I am saying has been passed down by story. I was told I should send it off to get graded just to perserve it but I have been afraid to send it off. Any suggestions what I should do to help perserve it.

Short snorter. I believe that is what it's called. I used to have a Hawaii note someone stole from me. Awesome note I can imagine your note has sentimental value to you I would cherish that. I would frame it and hang it on the wall with a note and description of all the information you have on it. Also I would look into the names on the note. No doubt they were your uncles comrades and who knows you might be able to find some of them and get more information on what you're Uncle did in the war.

Awesome video. I can relate to Richard. I lived in Japan (Okinawa) for six months. I did not buy any coins there because they were so over priced. I did manage to sell some gold jewelry over there and barely managed to get it sold for just under melt. I like Japanese coins but mainly buy the newer ones because I can relate to them. I bought the 100 yen phoenix coin for about 5$. I also bought a one ounce silver coin from Okinawa prefecture commemorative. I bought all these coins in the USA. I completely concur with Richard. Buy only Japanese coins IF you plan on buying to collect and not resell. Only buy to resell if you know what you're selling and can communicate effectively in Japanese to the coin shop owners. Remember Japanese coins are not manga so not so popular but they have their niche if you know where to post them for sale. I wonder if Richard is into Chinese coins of the period. I forgot to mention Richard was correct about one other thing. Japan is mostly a cash society so be prepared to dish out cash everwhere. (Withdraw from an ATM)
