      Naw those numbers don't count in a gun violence list. That's the point that Colin was making and flew over Tim's head. When someone dies in a car accident we don't count that as murder or suicide. The definition shouldn't change because of the tool.

    • @imrankazzy9076
      @imrankazzy9076 8 лет назад +10

      Agreed it almost always gets under my skin when a topic like this comes up and tim makes a very valid point, and it sort of just fades out in to silence and no one seems to address it. I agree with tim, while i may think guns are great or not why does everyone think they have a right to them? My sister bought me a pair of nunchuks and a blade (as in a antique type thing) and she wasnt allowed to bring it back from her trip to barcelona.. Is it my right or entitlement that i must have those weapons? No.. Did it bother me, sure i guess.. At no point is it necessary for guns to be as readily available as they are in a world where weed is illegal yet alcohol/cigarettes are STILL LEGAL.. Genuinely some things need to change and the gun laws are one of many.

    • @imrankazzy9076
      @imrankazzy9076 8 лет назад +9

      +bideomanlol it didnt fly over tims head tims point was those may not be gun violence per se but if those guns killed people even by accident or by suicide, they shouldnt be so easy to get.. He isn't wrong either in my view.

    • @bideomanlol
      @bideomanlol 8 лет назад +3

      +Imran Kazzy That's the thing though it wasn't a valid point in what Colin was talking about at that point. He was speaking of gun VIOLENCE. Very different from someone killing themselves or something like that. The reason you didn't get you guns or nunchucks is because she had to pass customs and even probably flew, airlines don't allow weapons. It doesn't pertain. Yes guns should have regulation but you can't say well I never wanted a gun so no one should. It's a narrow world view and not looking at what America is as a country.

    Tim, you stayed silent for most of this discussion but I wish you hadn't. I have a feeling it's because when up against someone like Colin (who I love and respect by the way), you maybe feel like you don't have the knowledge or articulation to argue his points, but I think you do, and should. I could see it in your face, you had a LOT to say, and I wish you had said it. The few times you did speak up, you made total sense and your points were completely valid and true, and it actually annoyed me a bit the way Colin shut you down on them. Don't worry about being afraid you won't be able to articulate your words or get your view across clearly, just put it forward anyway. You are extremely intelligent, forward thinking, and an all round good guy. Please, please, please get your voice heard more in these kinds of discussions. I guarantee you people want to hear it.

      Thank you Steve. I try. - Tim

    • @Lanorb
      @Lanorb 8 лет назад +8

      I'd have to agree. I'll start by saying that on most subjects I agree with Colin rather than Tim, but not in this instance. In general I enjoy their often polarized opinions since it spurs better conversation but I did think Colin was overly dismissive of Tim's points this time.
      I also find it extremely odd that Colin argues wait periods, better background checks, etc are more than worth it if we can save just a few lives, but then states we shouldn't flat out ban guns because it's "giving away rights for no reason." I'm fairly certain that saving people from getting shot or gun-related accidents would be the reason. You can't say that "your side tried" and "checked all the boxes" in instances of future gun violence with just a few minor changes.
      On top of that, his 3rd amendment argument is crazy. Yes, the rationale behind the 3rd amendment is archaic (in the same way the original rational behind the 2nd amendment is no longer applicable), but the ongoing presence of the 3rd amendment does not get people killed.
      I agree with Colin that doing away with the 2nd amendment is impossible in America's current state. That being said, it doesn't discount the fact that there are some damn good arguments as to why it might be a good idea.

      +Kinda Funny Tim, I usually disagree with most of the opinions you express on the show, but I remember one topic where I agreed with you and disagreed with Colin. That day you made me realize that you won't ALWAYS agree with someone, and that an opposite opinion, even if you disagree with it, can only bring more to the table. You're voice on this show is crucial, ESPECIALLY when you disagree witn Colin. You're existence made me realize that you eventually will, even if only once, disagree with someone you usually agree with, and vice versa. I will forever cherish your presence as a member of Kinda Funny, and as a human being in general. You have helped me grow as a person and I couldn't thank you enough for that.

    I love you Colin, but your argument here baffles me. I'm from England where it is illegal to purchase a gun, only a few people I know have guns and these are farmers who have the license to shoot grouse. as a result our gun violence is significantly lower, proportionally and regularly, than the USA. You're arguing that your gun crime is low proportional to the amount of guns in America, but surely that's the problem? Having so many guns within a country increases the chance of dying by one. By removing the means to kill surely you are creating a safer environment. I genuinely don't understand the argument for pro gun and I think that America needs to tighten its laws. I of course however appreciate and respect your opinion, stay awesome guys.

    • @jamiepreston7655
      @jamiepreston7655 8 лет назад +10

      +Bobo yeah but all you have to do is look at Australia? They banned the use of guns and gun crime dropped 80%?
      Also suicides dropped 40%, a huge statistic which proves that having a gun makes it much easier to commit suicide. It could happen, your politicians however aren't willing to potentially ruin their careers for the greater good, or receive the back lash that would undoubtedly unveil

      There are plenty of reasons to have weapons.
      1. Fear of the Government
      2. Hunting
      3. Protection for family
      Bear in mind, I'm someone who hates guns and hasn't even shot one. I don't believe in them personally, but I understand the point of owning them and respect their rights to do so.

    8:38 - I think Tim actually has a valid point here. Colin kinda just shrugged it off but I think that it is definitely a hole in his argument. Studies show that people on the verge of suicide are less likely to die if there is not a gun available to them. I agree with Colin on most issues, but I think this is a hole in his logic.

    • @jvit4245
      @jvit4245 8 лет назад +4

      Guns make it far easier to kill oneself than most other means (easier to accidentally shoot yourself and easier to have a painless, quick death). Other forms of suicide require you to either do something that hurts without instant death (which your body will naturally try to physically halt) or do something they takes more time to set-up or may not immediately kill you. Those things at the very least act as last-minute grasps for people to reconsider the act or someone else to intervene. Guns remove some of those hurdles.

    • @jvit4245
      @jvit4245 8 лет назад

      Or it means less will actually commit suicide as they will then have to take other means that require more effort and leave more avenues to reconsider and back out or for someone else to intervene. Pain can be a deterrent to numerous people, I'd like to keep that in place if it'll save more lives.
      Assisted Suicide is generally a different topic all together. Those are usually cases of terminally ill people or those living with life-harming conditions deciding, with counsel and time reconsider, to decide when to end their suffering. For a few more well known cases (I'm not that familiar with the practice) it can allow family members time to grieve without the shock/abrupt timing of a sudden death.

    • @jvit4245
      @jvit4245 8 лет назад

      I never said no one would commit suicide if they didn't have guns, but it would prevent some. Like you said, the overall goal is to prevent them all but you can't easily just do that. So while we figure out how to achieve that goal, let's do the thing that will prevent those that can't get over that line from finding an easier path to do it in the meantime.
      It's the same as domestic killing. Yes, someone who really wants to kill someone else can just use a knife on them, but it takes much more effort to do, allows the other individual to fight back/retreat more effectively/harder to outright kill someone. It's a lot more likely that someone else could intervene and keep someone alive if they poison themselves or attempt to jump off a bridge than if they found someone who shot themselves.

      @KZ3fps 8 лет назад

      Isaac, what Colin is arguing for (background checks and a cooling off period essentially) in no way infringes on the second amendment.
      Again, Hillary and Obama can say they want to take away guns all they want, but what Colin said is 100 percent correct. Even if the issue was somehow raised to ban all guns, there is absolutely no way in hell that it would pass. Would you guys please listen to what he is saying? The second amendment in this country will never be revoked, it would never get passed by congress. There is a reason amendments are so hard to get passed/taken away, there has to be a large majority that are in favor of it, and revoking gun rights will NEVER gain that type of majority.

      You are right, if a person is determined enough it will happen.. I live in Norway, where in 2011 we had a terrorist attack by a norwegian neo nazi. He planned it for 7-8years, got the guns legally by joining a club and for hunting.
      I think mass shootings are inevitable, but there's a reason it's happening multiple times a year in america, and part of it is definitively the easy access to guns.

      "I think anyone willing to partake in these shootings will find a way regardless." This statement is the most ridiculous argument that people make and is simply not fucking true. If you give people easy access to guns they are MUCH much more likely to commit a gun related crime. Yes, people like terrorist will "Always find a way" but people like gang members, drug addicts, etc will almost definitely not. Looking at the number of mass shootings/standard shootings in America shows that the current culture/easy of access are leading to far more shootings than would be taking place if it was harder to obtain a weapon.

    • @AlexLove631
      @AlexLove631 8 лет назад +1

      Luke Marshall Having easy gun access is obviously an issue, but ppl WILL find a way... Makeshift explosives and weapons are a possibility. My point is that is someone's intent is to kill innocent lives, they'll fucking do it regardless. Mind you, you and I are right in thinking it's too easy for them obtaining weapons. But psychopaths are psychopaths... No arguing that, man..

    So by Colin's way of reasoning then Islamic terrorism in the U.S. Isn't really "that bad", seeing as only 3000+ Americans have been killed on American soil since, and including 9/11. Funny though, after a few planes get used as weapons, security around airports increases dramatically. So the American government shows it can and will take action. America has been at war since 2001, fighting a problem that as Colin would put it "isn't that bad." and "Could be worse."
    I'm sorry but the pro gun argument doesn't follow any logical reasoning. It's simply people clinging onto a perceived freedom. But look at it this way, taking guns away from people may be seen as an infringement on their rights/ freedom but that's a minor thing when you compare it with the consequences of gun crime. The people in Orlando etc didn't just have their rights infringed upon, they and their families had everything taken away in an instant, without warning.

      I think what you just said is very important. terrorists have killed a little more than 3k Americans in the last 15 years. on the other hand our reaction, the larger war on terror, has claimed between a couple hundred thousand and a million people. crashed our economy and did not make us safer. our constution blatantly banned the way we responded but we did it anyway. unintended consequences. btw the us war on terror created isis which the Orlando shooter pledged loyalty. no illogical post 911 response good chance this guy doesn't loose it this hard.
      I know that it seems simple ban guns reduce gun deaths, but so did kill terrorists keep america safe. america isn't Europe or Australia, I not sure prohibition will work here, our crime rates will rise where guns are banned ie Chicago, unlike their European counterparts. also it's not always about should and can we do something it's about doing it the right way. want to change the second ammendment, change it! don't pretend half measures and intentionally misusing our constution al system are good ideas. that has horrible consequences.

    Here are the facts:
    1.) There's no such thing as a "Gun Show Loophole" I've gone to countless gun shows over the years, you have to fill out forms and leave contact information. You don't just leave the gun show with a gun, you buy it, you leave your information, and they ship it to your local store where you fill out more forms.
    2.) Buying any gun legally requires background checks. You can't go into a store or a show and buy something and leave with it. You have to front the cash, fill out a ton of state and federal forms, and wait. And even if you pass the background check, the store owner can still refuse to sell you the firearm, if you're acting shady, under refusal of service. I've seen the paper work first hand I when people say "we need more rigorous background checks!" I, for the life of me, can't see how anymore rigorous you'd want it, beyond a fucking rectal exam.
    3.) You have to have a special license to own an assault weapon. It is a process that takes years and a lot of money. And most times rather than not, the government denies your application based on intent.
    4.) The Shooter in Orlando did not have assault weapons. He had a pistol that was converted to look like a militaristic weapon. The police misreported, based on appearance, rather than actual knowledge of what the weapon was.
    5.) To fix the "Terrorist Watch List" is not congress's job. It's the presidents job, based on the fact that the Department of Justice runs the watch list, and the DOJ is under the Executive Branches jurisdiction. Congress can demand that the President make it more transparent and give appeal, but he doesn't have to do it and he won't.
    Make not mistake ladies and gentlemen, the things above you, are not opinions, they're are FACTS. You can have whatever opinion you want about them, but this is the situation.

      Alot of it is the media and politicians.
      For example, they always say things like "machine guns" or "the guns our soldiers use on the battlefield" when neither of those things are true. The AR15 is not what our soldiers use. It has plastic pieces that make it look the same. Mechanically it functions just like any other SEMI-auto (which is what basically every gun that anyone buys anymore is). "Machine guns" are basically illegal already without going through so much gov't read tape, background checks, expensive tax stamps, etc. and no "machine gun" (aka full auto) has been used in any of these shootings anyway. The AR15 wasn't even used in the Orlando shooting, but these politicians and media heads don't know anything about guns so any "scary black rifle" is an AR15 to them.
      Facts are, (and Colin might have covered this I'm not through the video yet) but there are about 12k gun homicides per year (most of it is gang violence in places where guns are already banned, like Chicago) but there is anywhere between 500,000 and 3,000,000 uses of guns for self defense each year.
      Anyone who has purchased and shot guns before knows that about 90% of what the media says about guns, loopholes, BG checks, is utter bullshit and is made to scare people who haven't educated themselves on the subject.

      Joshua Klimek The summary of all the anti gun things in that link that have expired/been shot down since 2010 shows how strict it was to start with though.
      The point is they have some of the strictest in America. Even if it's "comparable" to NY, that's fine... NY's are also some of he strictest... so of course it's comparable. The point is the crime there is higher and the gun laws didn't help, and in fact hurt, because you create a huge disarmed populace that can't defend itself and criminals know it. Kind of the same logic with gun free zones. Mass shooting happen in gun free zones almost every time, because it's a group of unarmed people who won't be able to put up resistance.

    I'm curious in what Colin means by "assault rifle" in his discussion. Assault rifles (fully automatic guns) are banned from being purchased by civilians so there's really no way to get one except on the black market. But if he is referring to the AR-15 then he's mistaken because that is not an assault rifle. The AR-15 is no different from your standard Glock handgun. Both are semi-automatic weapons that cannot be fired faster than the other. Also the "AR" does not stand for "assault rifle". It stands for ArmaLite Rifle named after the company that designed it in the 1950's. It's just a standard semi-automatic rifle and there's nothing special about it. The only thing special about it is that it looks cool and tactical and that's about it.

    I work in a Congressional Office, and here's my opinion on what you can do:
    Do research on gun violence, gun control legislation in other countries, and on guns themselves.
    Formulate an opinion, a very specific opinion. Don't just say "I'm pro/anti blah blah" that's not helpful. Say things like "I want to pass laws to close the gun show loophole" or "I want to lift the restrictions Congress put on the CDC to prevent research on gun violence" or whatever you TRULY think will help our country and preserve civil liberties.
    Write a quick letter, one-page is more than enough, concerning your stance on the issue. Send it to your 2 Senators, House of Representatives Rep, your state representative, your mayor, your county commissioner, and your city councilor. Emphasis your stance and reassure them that you will be voting.
    If you haven't done these simple steps to get involved, and then complain about people not caring or nothing changing, YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

      OK, if you live in Australia would you consider clearing up something for me? I've heard, and again I need this clarified so I'm not saying it's fact, but I've heard that while gun crimes are obviously down post-gun ban that other crimes have skyrocketed. That home invasions are up, armed home invasions are up, non gun violence is up, basically that without the ability to defend oneself that every possible crime stat other than the one that is illegal (guns) has gone up. Is that a lie or is there some truth there? Maybe you can give me some hard data being as you have first hand knowledge. Because if all it did was stop "mass shootings" but everything else is a criminals playground with a herd of sheep who cannot defend themselves it seems like a poor trade-off.

      +Paul Dozier you can check on Wikipedia for crime in Australia if you don't believe me, but it has been recently reported that homicides in Australia are 1 in 100,000 whilst in the US it's 4 in 100,000. Also, you can check the stats yourself by heading to the Australia Bureau of Statistics online, it's a great resource for this sort of stuff. If you don't have the time, though, I can assure you that Australia has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

    No one is asking to ban guns outright. Common sense legislation. The world is never going to rid itself of illegal arms, but at the very least, we can at least attempt to blockade the mentally deranged from simply walking into a store and buying military grade weapons. What justification can a person have for having semi-automatic weapons, arms that are geared for taking down multiple targets at once? How can you reason they should be bought legally for civilian use? For defense? Against whom exactly? The national guard?

  • @twil004
    @twil004 8 лет назад +1

    I was getting ready to post something about how Colin was wrong but after watching the whole thing he had some valid points. My bigger issue is with the defeatist attitude the rest of the group had. Greg's point of "why call your representative when nothing will change?" Shows the problem with the youth in the country. We think our voices don't matter so we don't speak up. Then we get pissed when they don't listen when we haven't been talking the whole time. Youth doesn't vote. The turn out for the youth is embarrassing low. I'll use the UK for example, just recently the youth vote didn't show up to vote on their own country leaving the European Union and now they're butt hurt at the result. What I'm saying is if we want to inact change we have to at least try. Colin is right that there is a problem within the country. The leaders won't listen to the people because the only ones they will listen to are the ones who actually make their voices heard.

    Guys, the "gun show loophole" is a myth. It refers to private sales between private parties; not licensed gun dealers. However, those who follow the law still have to register the sale. Go to a gun show, and try to buy a gun without a background check and waiting period. You can't.
    There's also a lot of misinformation about weapons. An AR-15 for instance, is not a " weapon of war;" but rather a .22 caliber rifle with aesthetic flourishes which make it appear more imposing. In fact, it's so weak a weapon, it can't be used for hunting in many states because because one shot doesn't do enough damage to kill large game, and is thus Inhumane as a result.
    The truth about Orlando- The left saw the right being compassionate to the LGBT community as fellow Americans, and that completely flee in the face of their "right hates gays" narrative. It was also a crisis which "couldn't go to waste" with regard to generating hysteria about guns.
    It was the perfect storm of politics and emotion.

      ***** I didn't realize India or China were modern/developed first world countries. Nor did I realize we were talking about these two countries. Also neither country is nearly as culturally/religiously diverse as the US.
      China is a Communist dictatorship where the government has an iron-grip on its public and media. If such a shooting happened the government would squash it immediately and then never report it. Not to mention China suffers from a massive problem with Infanticide, something the US does not, different countries different problems.
      India is an undeveloped third world country with high poverty rates and a no-existent infrastructure. There isn't enough money for most citizens to afford much of anything, let a lone a gun.
      Lets not forget the amount of armed militias in middle-eastern countries committing mass shooting on a daily basis, we'll just forget about that to support your argument I guess.

    Part of Colin's argument is how the few day waiting period will get people to rethink whatever damage they're going to cause, but the assumption here is that the gun was purchased with the intentions to immediately inflict harm. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of these cases seem to be that the shooters were already in possession of firearms long before they went on a killing spree.

    Colin your point about gun deaths due to suicide 'not counting' is a little silly. If you shoot yourself in the head, there is an extremely high chance of death, much higher than other means of suicide. This means that, because of the availability of guns, people are more able to kill themselves and less likely to survive. Stats show that if a suicide attempt fails, that person is unlikely to try again to commit suicide. However, because of the presence of guns in America, these attempts are less likely to fail, thus more people die who could have been saved. This is an important issue.

    I live in CT, 20 minutes away from Sandy Hook. I pass by the Newtown I-84 exit quite often.
    Our democratic governor, Malloy, has been trying to use CT as a staging ground for firearm restrictions. CT is the test subject for the rest of the country.
    You want to know what's happening in CT after Sandy Hook? CT is broke. We're losing businesses. After Governor Malloy got reelected, he raised taxes. He recently signed a budget to cut spending on education funding and... you guessed it... Mental Health Services. Here is a quote from an article:
    "The budget cuts spending across all branches of government, but some especially hard hit include the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the Department of Children and Families, and the Department of Correction. It also caps state pensions at $125,000 for non-union employees and cuts education funding and other grants to cities and towns."

    People can debate back and forth about gun control but the fact that a random schmuck can just eliminate 50 people in an evening is something that needs to be dealt with. It's too bad the adults in charge aren't interested in working on a solution to that dilemma.

    I also think part of the reasoning behind the argument of the "no changes to gun laws" is that once there are changes, let's say, if you have a mental illness then you can't buy a gun, whats to stop the government to deem you "mentally unstable" after a short questionnaire that they invented and slowly start restricting the entire population from owning guns and purchasing guns.
    Also, I'm pretty high and that might not actually make any sense.

      +kingvmr don't you think it's unnecessary though with assault rifles? Why do people need to own them? Rather than a patriotic American stance of it being a 'right' to own one. Just change the law, they did in Australia and it worked.
