  • Lets take a look at potentiometers, do they need and how to even lubricate them.
I showcase compatibility charts, peoples knowledge(experience) as well as book knowledge from 1975, because everything seems to have been better back in the day, even accessibility to information.

Ever figure out a safe lubricant for potentiometers? I have an old fender amp with 12 rheostats on the front..I need to clean them all as they are full of dust..people say spray contact cleaner in it..well that will clean it but kill the lubrication and it will corroded quick..so I'm at a loss

great video, you are correct about 'withholding information'

I use motor bike engine oil in potentiometer, cheap and didn't observe any damage for 10+ years. I fixed mouse scroll /buttons and switches too. Since the oil is thick, it retains its glide feel. Deoxit D5/F5 are so expensive that replacing pots would workout cheap

Yep, I had intermittent contact on some of the 24 potentiometers, and extreme stiffness on 20 of them which are slide potentiometers, all these on my 1978 Soundcraftsmen PE-2217 Equalizer/Preamp. Thanks to using Deoxit D5, all electrical contacts were restored, and via using a silicon lubricant, all pots moved with absolute ease.

Can you use graphite powder as a lubricant? Or silicone spray? Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia 👍

I have CRC 226, It is not thick enough to recover the tight smooth drag feel of a new potentiometer, for that tight new feel you have to open the potentiometer and apply silicon or Deoxit grease.
Also petroleum KY jelly comes in a plastic container.

shit man, this was informative as hell, thanks eh. Unfortunately Im watching this after spraying all my pots with CRC SensorKleen, and lots of it lol. All my pots now have virtually zero turning resistance, they'd probably spin if a gust of wind hit them lol, but now I know too take them apart and grease em up and that silcone ptfe is what I need.

I used hairclipper oil lol I’m going to only do 1 though just in case it ruins it I only need 1 to move with ease

As you can see metal comes into play with the carbon track and plastics of a potentiometer that's why it's best to use lubricant on both materials. Take for example the guitar nuts made of graphite even they're made of graphite when you add the strings to the equation made of steel (etc...) everything changes and even the experts recommend a little bit of lubrication with graphite guitar nuts.

can anyone cross reference a part number. i have tried to find a used or NOS part but I am not having any luck. I have Clarostat C0416443, below that number is 20 1107. I do not know what the 20 1107 numbers are but i am assuming it has something to do with the function. this pot is for a mobility chair and it is used to drive forward or reverse. any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have tried to cross reference that C0416443 number to try and find a new replacement part but i am not having any luck.
