- Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the most popular London universities for students to attend. Its often high up in the UK university rankings but recent UK university rankings have pushed it down considerably to one of its lowest ever positions.
In this video I explore is Queen Mary worth attending, is Queen Mary an elite university and if Queen Mary university can get you a good job afterwards. I am an MSc Banking graduate of QMUL. I have worked for a big4 company and many banks through the years as a risk quant. QMUL degree has opened all doors to me to top tier employers in the banking industry, but appart from this, a lot of things I learned during my degree at QMUL where GOLD at the beginning of my career, especially in the econometrics and credit risk field. I never ever regret choosing Queen Mary University of London !

Which one is the better choice?
As some say Sheffield has better exposure while the world ranking based on CS of QMUL is ranked higher

Thanks for the support and do consider subscribing if you haven’t done so! That’s a very good degree however it’s a new type of degree. It didn’t exist 10 years ago so is hard to judge on the success as there’s very little data…..but that being said, QM is a great uni to learn at and im sure you’ll have great teaching and opportunities to grow your knowledge in the area. both are very good for that course and known in the industry as such. So you'll have great options from either, but i would choose QM just because of my detailed knowledge and also because its based in London which would make a great experience.

For Big4 I wouldn't say it's make a massive difference they just want a 2:1 but for more opportunities QM is a little better. Not a lot, just a little

Hey man. I want to break into the financial field - the offer I currently have is an MSc in investment banking (with extensive prep for the chartered financial analyst exam) from QMUL. However, I have applied to an MSc in financial risk analysis from LSE, and I imagine I will get the offer. Which degree would I be better off taking? I know LSE is a targetted uni, but I am wondering if the CFA difference will be quite noticeable to employers.
Short answer: LSE , no question about it!
Nobody will expect you to have CFA and it's more used for portfolio MGMT roles which they'll sponsor and train you in if you want that.

Hi as you worked in investment/banks, what do you think of the following 2 unis for Finance/markets/investments Kent and Aston. Unfortunately I do not have the grade, I am trying to choose the best Uni with employment/placement/business ranking prestige. I did a Software engineering bsc which didn't go well (Long story). I have always been keen on finance/trading and management. Kent and Aston both have triple accreditation, some finance/management courses at Kent for example have GARP accreditation, Aston has Chartered Market Technician (CMT), but both have Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). For example Aston having incorporated at least 70 percent of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) and placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice within the program. So basically which would you go for if your where in this position. Surrey university is another one that can be added, but does not have triple accreditation like Aston or kent, but is higher in rankings. Kind Regards.
In terms of what I've seen of people in the bank , I've seen Aston grads more than Kent. Honestly, no one knows which unis have the triple accreditations etc it's all very reputation of uni based , eg ucl would be sought after more even though I'm sure it doesn't have all the accreditation. What areas of investment banking do you want to try and work in? FO direct entry will be extremely difficult. I also feel Birmingham is a more lively city than Kent. This is probably a good situation to book a session with me for as lots to consider and advise but I'm unfortunately out of the country for next two weeks.
@@ThatMuslimLife Thanks for the reply brother, I come from Hertfordshire so going to a city like Aston would be better I think, but Kent is closer which is 1 hour from London. But I a live too far from both, I would have to live accommodation in both Unis. I could just go to my local Hertfordshire University, but they have no accreditations, business school and ranking is very low, so employability wont be great will it?

Again I am not sure, I like to trade in my spare time, I like learning about companies, debts, revenues etc, I thought something with finance and investments msc would be good. I want a basic understanding of finance, I like Aston actully has a module called finance with python which I tried on a free website and understood things. I always also like management aspects as well, which is why I am looking at finance and management type courses. Its difficult, I have one chance I need to make the right choice.
As a job where can I see my self? Well again not sure, maybe financial analyst, looking at companies giving ratings, or finance and management kind of side? I do not like change much, I like doing the same things over and over again, as long as I know the theory behind it and can apply it. What type of job role would that be?

Tricky - i think both are well established degrees at the unis. Bayes probably gives you an edge but not a lot

Oh man that's a big question! I'll try and make a few vids as there's a lot to cover but immediately understand basic products, understand the different areas and explain why you prefer some. But try and get good work experience as well

Bath I think is a great all rounder. Notts is good but bath is also closer to London for job interviews. I feel bayes is overrated but it’s advantage is it’s in London so more networking opportunities. QM is good but the other unis are better

Bristol by far (I’ve also studied there so know about it).
QM then small gap to Liverpool. Then Sheffield.

very impressive! not many people will have CFA L1 at this level. you have a good chance to make a very good starting salary in banking but try your best to get work experience....thats going to be your big differentiator from everyone else.

Hi, I have been offered a place with Queen Mary for the Maths with Finance and Accounting undergraduate course. How do I work alongside PWC, is there an application process or does this course not apply?
Thanks for the comment. The pwc partnership is with a specific degree course (can be found in the prospectus ) so can’t be applied to all. But your degree offer is a great choice as well!
Also, is surrey university's accounting and finance better. I understand that Surrey is much higher in terms of ranking but since QMUL is a Russell Group I'm not too sure. @@ThatMuslimLife

Hmmm those are all some great unis. I'd say reputation wise bristol is highest . But they're also very different types of unis eg central London / quiet countryside. Do you have a preference of types you want?

I would definitely put into consideration the tuition fee. The top 2 is a bit too expensive for me!
QM/Exeter will offer you great opportunities as well if you choose them after considering your budget . Have a look at the top eco degrees video, it's applicable for you as well!

I think this is a very growing demand. What will make you stand out is growing your own personal brand by doing marketing etc for yourself. That's a tough one. Birmingham is a very good uni, I might put it above QM for this choice. What was your undergrad like and are there any considerations you're thinking of for masters?
Actually I prefer the content of the course in QMUL but I’m afraid that the career prospect is not comparable to that of Birmingham. My undergrad study was at an university in my home country from SEA. If I could only be in the UK for 1 year and enjoy my student life, is QMUL a better choice?
Hello … How’s QMUL for MSc in Digital Marketing?
Digital marketing is a relatively new degree at a lot of unis. Some unis are just trying to get students money without actually making it a good course to study. QM is a good uni so I feel you’ll have that name brand studying there plus they have a reputation to make sure it’s a good course. Make sure you develop your own online portfolio as well of your personal projects.

Hey, if u had to, would u pick Durham or Edinburgh for a masters degree? I hold offers from both, Edinburgh has better international ranking, Durham apparently has better local ranking. How are either perceived? Is there a difference?
For these two don't worry about rankings, both are equally good. Do you plan to work in UK afterwards?
