    Hello,
    I'm looking forward to come to the UK along with my spouse who will be studying MA Education and we have got offers from Durham, U of Sheffield, U of Birmingham, York, Liverpool, Cardiff, Bristol and Queens Belfast apart from that we have gotten many offers from lower ranked unis such as Essex, Derby, Keele, East anglia etc. We've secured scholarships from most unis (including Russel group) and therefore the tuition fee is more or less the same so I'm confused which university to select for education program and also I need to select a university where I can find job opportunities especially in the construction industry since I'm a civil engineer.

    I went to Imperial. It's full on and looking back Im not quite sure how I managed to live in London & study for those 4 years. When I was there (about 15 years ago) they were just starting the student satisfaction surveys...and they consistently came out as the worst uni for satisfaction so each department would send it to each student and the heads of each department would basically look over your shoulder as you were completing the survey to make sure you put down 'the right answers' lol. Man, looking back it was a hard grind and being in the centre of London made it harder in many ways to get away from it all. Definitely glad I did it though and the job prospects are great. Seems to have gone downhill a bit though since I was there especially on the whole identity politics propaganda they send out but thats another story , cheers.

      Thanks a lot for your comment and thats hilarious about the supervision to make sure you 'answer the feedback forms correctly' !! I agree that it is definitely a tough uni to handle, a lot of the courses require lots lab work for example. But youve ended up in a great job and thats something that is a big motivating factor for students who go here....i agree with the end where it has changed slightly, a big push for external funding to bridge the uk government funding gaps. With external funding comes external stakeholder demands.

    Hello, I've got an offer from University of Liverpool and like you said, it's not on everyone's top of the list but it was for me. It has a steep acceptance rate which means they recruit the best of the best to study there, obviously also in the top 20 unis in the UK, their graduates are well sought after since it's part of Russell group and also highly ranked, amazing internship and alumni network along with great work and post graduate opportunities plus I've heard the nightlife is amazing too. If you could provide more information on Liverpool, then it would help me in finalizing my enrolment.

    what is your view of the University of Reading? I've been looking at universities mainly in London for postgraduate study and I saw that Reading isn't too far away and it has good agrifood systems-related programs. I just wonder if its international reputation and employability rate is as good. For context, I will also be applying to Imperial & UCL postgraduate programs in biotechnology & plant sciences but I thought it would be good to have a safety net.

    Hi I'll see if I can chip in a bit about Lancaster, I'm a Masters student doing Economics who took both my undergrad and will take my masters this year there. I think the main reasons it is rated so high is due to the research quality, emphasis on career development and the prevalence of certain departments. As someone who is considering a career as an academic, finding that many of my lecturers had been published in top tier journals and had done important work over their careers (e.g. Eyal Winter who is a world leading behavioural economist and one of the most interesting teachers I've ever had, among many other quality tutors at Lancaster) was a welcome surprise, even in a department like Economics which isn't at all standout in the country.
    Certain departments like linguistics, computer science, Engineering and Physics are quite literally some of the best in the world, e.g. in linguistics I believe we had the highest rated academic (by h-Index) in the world here only a few years ago before he passed. Physics is rated 3rd in the country by the Guardian for example and most departments are in the top 20 in the UK and many are or have recently been rated in the top 10.
    I also have to attest to the attention I and my career has gotten by my department, they seem to genuinely care about me as a postgraduate student and I feel that most lecturers (there are exceptions of course) are approachable, intelligent and have a love for their subject. I can try to give negatives but I fully believe the university has helped me in my studies to a great extent and there are few things, if any I would change about my education specifically. One thing though, you are definitely not coming to Lancaster for the night life as its pretty mediocre, but societies, clubs and sports are by far one of its strongest points and made up for that in my opinion.
    Hope that helped!

    • @ThatMuslimLife
      @ThatMuslimLife  Год назад +4

      Thanks for the lowdown! That's definitely something I'd never have found out unless I'd gone there and known the quality of the lecturers. For you to carry on your studies there says it all. Hopefully HR of all the top companies take note of how great Lancaster has become and seems to have cemented its place in the top 10 of the UK rankings.
      Your last paragraph I feel is the best. Hopefully other students considering Lancaster can see it and understand how much of a difference this care from the staff makes for students.

    MA Development Studies at KCL or MSc Development Studies at SOAS
    KCL is very famous, even Japanese employers can easily recognize it as a top uni. SOAS has a very good reputation in the area of development studies, but is not well known internationally, at least not familiar to us. That's why I'm lost. Any thoughts on it?

      Wow that’s a difficult decision!! Both will be very well respected and you’ve summarised it well where kings has overall great reputation and Soas has great reputation within the development fields. One thing to consider is what the modules consist of, is there anything you like or don’t like from the content? I’m currently studying at kings doing a part time and could’ve chosen soas but chose kings for overall reputation. This is very difficult choice to make but I chose kings because of I liked the modules, the varied student body and the history which gives prestige. I hope this helps a little! Hi, I am an international student. I am planning to attend LSE for the BSc. International Social and Public Policy and Economics programme. It's 50% ISPP and 50% Econ by default but I am planning to choose all the optional modules in Economics so it'll be kind of 67% Econ and 33% ISPP.
    I wanted to know if you would recommend this degree for a pure finance career (investment banking, quant positions at banks etc.) compared to Warwick pure Economics.
    I know, Warwick has the better sounding degree on paper (straight Economics) but LSE is world class and has a strong brand name. So, which one would you advise me to choose? (for a pure Finance career that is)

    • @ThatMuslimLife
      @ThatMuslimLife  Год назад +1

      Tricky choice. Yes LSE would be top pick for those jobs but the jobs are very specialised and definitely would want a high maths component. I don’t even know if you’d get the chance anywhere to list out all the modules you’ve taken to show you’ve done a lot of economic ones.
      I don’t believe your future path will be heavily constrained by either one of these choices. Honestly I’d even shortened that degree name to something else , it’s too confusing for HR to figure out what it is! If you’re leaving towards LSE then go for that and get the networking done early on. You will have lots of opportunities from spring week, summer internships etc to show you’re capable of those jobs.
      Best of luck, both are amazing options!

    • @anishmal2305
      @anishmal2305 Год назад

      @@ThatMuslimLife I searched the LSE degree on Linkedin (by filtering), and saw that most graduates are working in decent banks (HSBC etc.).
      I think it'll be fine. Although, I would try to transfer to something like Philosophy and Economics, or something but even if I'm not successful, I'm very happy to continue with the current degree.
      Also, I got some crazy insight into the jobs thing. The employers want to see the best grades on your CV, plus you need to perform very well in the job interviews etc.
      What I realized was that the LSE BSc. ISPP and Economics is lower workload and comparatively easier than Warwick Economics. And this is important cause I have more likelihood of scoring high grades in the ISPP and Econ course (with the same hardwork). Plus, since it's lower workload, I can dedicate more time towards internships, extra-curriculars, networking, preparing for job interviews, selection aptitude tests etc.
      Hence, I decided to choose LSE. Thanks for your time again. Would love to connect on Linkedin if it's cool. I haven't worked on my Linkedin yet cause university starts in September and I don't have much to write on the app as of now. But when I put in the work, maybe I can provide some value to your content etc. Time will tell.

    hey there, I am a current student at Lancaster uni well tbh the uni has recently surfaced among the top schools in the UK. overall its a fantastic uni like I've heard alot from graduates and currently, most of them are in pretty good companies as well so the graduate outcome from what I see is quite good. The uni is not in the best location tbf as it is abt 3 miles from Lancaster city and the city in itself isn't remotely like manchester or Birmingham, but a decent city (it's good for me tbh becoz this means I can save more money on stupid expenses). The uni is quite well known for its business and management dept and recently theire reputation for comp sci is quite good. overall in my opinion its a pretty sick uni but again im biased, but hey maybe this educated you abt Lancaster

I wouldnt say Bristol is a massive city but it is more vibrant then Durham but neither are comparable to London/Manchester. Ive seen many placements at magic circle firms from both unis - both unis are very similar in terms of student make up (private school), people can be friendly but you do have to go out of your way as well to make friends. King’s College London almost always features in the top 7 in international rankings for the UK.
    There are two principal reasons why it doesn’t perform better domestically:
    1. It has among the lowest student satisfaction rates, which are given disproportionate attention in domestic UK rankings (especially since they have a selection bias). If King’s fixed this they would do substantially better.
    2. It has the largest school of nursing in the country; this suppresses the average entry tariff as nursing has lower entry requirements than most other King’s programmes.
    But if we look at overall prestige, research output, entry standards for most programmes, number of Nobel Prize laureates etc. King’s is clearly a top 10 UK University. Comparable to the likes of Edinburgh (which also underperforms in domestic rankings).

    • @ThatMuslimLife
      @ThatMuslimLife  8 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the reply, it’s really insightful and I agree with all your points. Reputation is difficult to remove hence even if kcl drops down rankings or other new unis rise, Kcl reputation remains high.

    • @Anaximander_610
      @Anaximander_610 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@ThatMuslimLife This sounds like a very interesting video. There are a number of other dubious metrics used; in particular there is The Guardian’s ‘value added’, which compares students' degree results with their entry qualifications to (in The Guardian’s own words) ‘show how effectively they are taught.’
      Obviously this is going to elevate universities with lower entry requirements at the expense of those with higher ones. It’s also based on the highly flawed assumption that achieving a first-class degree is uniformly challenging across all institutions, which is clearly not the case.

    • @ThatMuslimLife

As i said my target is bulge bracket banks, will it be wise to let go Warwick for Nottingham just for Tuition fees.

If i didnt have to pay tution fees id 100% choose warwick but if i have to pay tution fees for one of them and not the other then id happily choose notts

    Lancaster and Loughborough are both perfectly decent non Russell Group universities but the Times and Guardian rankings into which they are placed within the top ten (or nearly so) are simply preposterous. The actual top universities in the UK are best judged by the top employers in the UK and beyond. Take a look at the High Flyers online annual rankings of the Top 20 most prestigious universities in the UK. Neither Lancaster nor Loughborough make it anywhere into the real world Top 20. Look also at the QS world graduate employability rankings. They show that Russell Group universities such as Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham and Warwick are very highly ranked indeed by national and international employers. The above six universities are placed by the High Flyers at a higher ranking than Cambridge (7) or Oxford (10). Some of the 'academic' rankings such as the latest Guardian 2023 table are grossly irresponsible and misleading to sixth formers and those seeking to join the best university that they can. The Guardian and Times rankings tables are simply at variance with the far more reality based views of major UK and international employers. See also the QS world university academic rankings which tell you straight as to which UK universities are the most respected across the world. The hard headed QS world rankings often differ greatly from the parochial snobbery which afflicts some UK university rankings. For instance universities beloved of private school applicants such as Durham and St Andrews are always in the top 10 in the Times and Guardian (which employ a great many private school educated journalists) yet are manifestly lower ranked internationally than for example Manchester, Birmingham, Warwick or Leeds.

    • @ThatMuslimLife
      @ThatMuslimLife  Год назад +4

      Firstly i'm with you on the Guardian ranking - dont know where they pull those rankings out from but it definitely gives the wrong impression of how valued degrees from certain universities are. Some of their rankings are crazy. and you make fair points about Loughborough and Lancaster - I kept having to say i was surprised in my video when i was seeing universities such as Bristol and Nottingham ranked so much lower. QS rankings on the other hand is too strict on prestige and takes away some points which are important at a more local level such as student satisfaction.
