- This is a different kind of video and I had this planned for a while now so I decided to stop bein lazy and finish editing. I dont really see people trying to show off games like these outside of Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Rising, and Nier Automata. So i really wanna try to push them out there. Also i know theyre also called character action games too i just prefer to call em stylish action since it sounds better. Hope we can spread em out there as much as possible to grow the community and support these devs since they need all the love they can get.

Spent most of reverse june doin this so i guess it wasna complete loss huh? Also gonna try different ways to push these kinda games because they deserve more love.
Which one was your favorite?
Awesome!
i love these kinds of vids from you, ive been developing a 2.5D stylish action roguelike and seeing all these different takes on the genre with u styling hard as fuck (Lego star wars video was insane lmao) is a great inspiration, quality content as always c: c:
I bet that you can't defeat the prolog boss with nero.
Can you tell us what the second track is starting at Mahou Arms? Love your channel :)
The song is “it’s kill or be killed” from no more heroes 2 in case anyone was wondering
Thank you for posting this. I keep trying to find games that play similar to Devil May Cry, but the genre is so hard to pin down. Some people call it "character action", and some people despise that tagline. Some people consider them "hack and slash", but that ranges anywhere from Dark Souls to Onimusha to Dynasty Warriors. This really helped me find a bunch of games to add to my wishlist.
Yea i started this becuse i ran into the same problem too. I got a bunch of ppl tellin me "its just hack and slash" but only dark souls would come, i would call it character action too but ive always preferred this name.
I always feel like "Character Action" is somewhat correct. Stylish Action is better as it have emphasis on the combos rather than the hackand slash/Bet em up aspect
The most annoying part is that for many people, me included, "hack 'n slash" refers to Diablo-likes.
There's also Ultrakill, if you're looking for stylish action in an FPS.
Didnt watch the full vídeo yet, but there is also Vanquish, for third person enjoyers
@@neo.5787 And after Vanquish you can check out RE6, the movement is really good and the melee system is way more freeform and less limited than in Vanquish.
@@thechugg4372 I didn't play the ones before tho
@@neo.5787 Resident Evil is truly a series where you can just play things out of order, since each game is so different and relatively self contained.
That said, RE4 is GOAT, check it out some time.
definitely check out shady knight too, it's a more melee focused stylish action fps where you can kick dudes and throw barrels at them
I get the feeling this is gonna be a long running series on your channel and I'm gonna be all for it if you're willing you'll churn out more like this
0:00 Fairy bloom freesia
0:21 Assault Spy
1:21 Onechanbara z2 chaos
2:01 Heartless and Dreadful
2:42 Icey
4:05 Sakuna of rise and ruin
5:25 Mahou Arms
6:10 Ultra Age
6:55 Enenra
For those wondering what the music in the background is, it's called It's Kill or Be Killed from No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
Dude, your music taste is impeccable. Absolutely love the fact that you seem to enjoy jazzy electronic / future funk and also stylish action games at the same time. Match made in heaven from my perspective. Thank you for your excellent work!
Please mention the tracks you used in this vid, they're superb.
Actually mention the tracks for every video so people can discover more of that music.
I would like to know the music too.
I know that the music for this vid specifically is from no more hero's ost
Song: It's Kill or Be Killed - No More Heroes 2 OST.
The second track is "Slow Motion Sunset" by Moe Shop which sampled the song "You'll Never Know" by Kimiko Kasai.
I highly appreciate that you gave ICEY attention even with just the thumbnail
Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 are also what you’re looking for in terms of stylish action.
bless assault spy for being an early access game that actually made it to full release, it's fun as hell. mahou arms and enenra look cool but idk how long they'll be stuck in alpha/beta/whatever for, might give ultra age a try though
do u know if these are all mobile games?
@@gabrielquintanilla7118 i don't think any of them are mobile games
@@gabrielquintanilla7118 icey is the only mobile game on this list
You're a real one for doing this. There's a lot of underground games that fans of this genre would like if they gave it a chance. A few others I'd suggest are;
- Onikira: Demon Killer
- Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time
- Darksiders 1 and (especially) 2
- Blades of Fury
- Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae
- Sengoku Basara
- Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.
I guess you're also looking forward to Soulstice too, right?
Thanks for doing this show case. I'm making a 2.5D Platformer/Character Action game and I need games to study that do it right. Icey First!
Hey idk if your still checking for research, but MapleStory and Elsword have some amazing examples of very well crafted 2.5D combat systems. Especially as 🍁 story has a very large variety of character applications you could check. Elsword is closer to 3d but it stays in a 2.5d display so it also gives plenty of great material. Hope the development is going well for you!
Other suggestions for such combat to look for inspiration in: The games by Ska Studios tend to be quite good, such as The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile, Charlie Murder and Salt & Sanctuary (or so i've heard about that last one).
Good luck!
I hope you make more of these Stylish Action Game showcases
On the topic of expanding the stylish action game genre. I feel like Ultrakill a great shout as well. Its literally an fps dmc
We need more from this genre!!!
Hell yeah, always looking for more games like this to play.
I love this. THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR!
AND I'M ABSOLUTELY CRAZY ABOUT IT~!
If a game I made ever gets shown on one of these vids I think my work would be complete
thank you youtube recommends
Ayyy, Icey! Really good game. Kinda like if you mashed a character action game with stanley parable
I love this kind of games where you can juggle your enemies
Very happy to see Sakuna on here, that game blew me away. Don't know how often you did it but the game has a Bayonetta style parry in it too.
I expected a few of these but never in my life would I have thought Sakuna could pull off some Nero combos. Great vid
Always appreciate seeing more of these games.
I highly recommend trying out NEO: The World Ends With You if you ever get the chance. Each character is mapped to a button to the controller (you can switch around which characters has what pin so it isn’t set in stone for which character can use a certain pin). Each attack type in the game has a condition that requires you to “Drop the Beat”, basically a combo finisher that’s tacked onto each pin and they each have their own variations. For example, some will have you inflicting status ailments on enemies, others will have you launching enemies in the air or into walls and some will have you piledriving them into the ground and so on and so forth. You do this in order to gradually build your Groove meter and unleash Mashups, which are 15 different elemental attacks that each have their own unique effect and can be activated on the battle field while you’re doing combos.
There are pins with special abilities that reward you greatly when you set certain combos up right, whether it’s using knockdown pins to activate Grave Marker’s finisher, using launcher pins to increase the power of aerial pins such as Leo Armo or Meteor Strike, using chain pins to entangle enemies and increase the power of Drift Tackle or Swift Strike pins, etc.
Even pins that have the same Psych archetype can have a different Beatdrop condition, which helps to keep things varied. Take Reigetsu or Hotaru for example. Both are Vortex Saber (melee sword attacks that unleash an AoE slash as their finishers) pins, with Reigetsu being Wind and Hotaru being Light, but Reigetsu requires you to knock an enemy into a wall in order to activate its Beatdrop whereas Hotaru has you doing its combo finisher to order to activate its own Beatdrop. Enemies also have revenge properties that can be disabled with status effects/hold pins, and if you’re skilled enough, you can use said revenge properties to your advantage like in KH.
You can get a LOT of custom combos, especially since each pin is used independently. There’s also shit like reversals, inertia manipulation, pin buffering, camera positioning, revenge meter manipulation, and more if you want to get in-depth with the tech stuff. My buddy Sonicsenryaku covers the game quite extensively and I highly recommend checking his channel out.
The game have such a terrible port on thr swicth, and i mention because i love the game, but for anyone who wants to tried it out, dont do that, or if you are willing to play on the go and you dont have steam deck...ok i guess
In pc is ok optimized, is probably very commendable with low tier pc
The story good and everything else holds up pretty well, im not gonna say its perfect because i didn't finished, its not because is bad but i sold my swicth and i was having 30 hours on it
It feels pointless when i game on pc
Idk is just me
@@panuru9175 I initially played the switch port, and it's pretty good for the most part, though it's undeniable that the PS4 and PC versions run much better. Game hovers around 30-40 fps on the switch port, with the exception of killer remixes which drop the frames pretty hard. PS4 port runs at a solid 60fps, and the PC port I believe has an uncapped frame rate. But regardless, the game is amazing to play and has a lot of depth to its combat system.
I want to play both the original the world ends with you and NEO.
i really like how simplistic mahou arm vfx to highlighted the moveset, i can see the moveset animation clearly
Thanks for this video! I know it’s not your usual content but I’ve been looking for some more action games to try out.
Edit: It’s also really great that you posted their links in the description
Thanks for this. I have tried FBF, Icey, Assault Spy, and Z2 Chaos, but seeing more from the genre is always great.
These all look really cool definitely gonna check them out love your videos especially the stylish ones you've got some skills really liked your lore accurate Dante video very cool also love the music blends in real good with the gameplay
Excellent choice of games. All of these are a blast and I can recommend them
Where is enenra playable?
@@gabrielquintanilla7118 10 months late, but as far as I know, Enenra isn't playable yet.
THANK YOU FOR GODS SAKE IVE BEEN CRAVING FOR MORE CHARACTER ACTION GAMES
Thank you for this! I hadn't heard of most of these! Have a look at I Am The Hero for a VERY different take on what ICEY tried to do, I think their strengths and flaws complement each other well combat-mechanics-wise.
I wish there were more sidescrollers that let you stagger and juggle enemies.
Very lovely. Definitely gonna check out Assault Spy.
nice job, so many old and new action games out there which never got the recognition they deserved...
I'm always looking for new action games, vids like this are really cool since I can never find any other games I like. I just added these to my steam watch list so I'll buy them when there's a sale.
The music is half the video, well done
Damn, more games I need to try, just ran through assault spy again, game slaps. A game I can recommend is Bloodrain Chronicles: Mirage. Pretty smooth and fun character kits.
A lot of cool combos, you re sick man, but maybe next time when you will be doing that kind of video, add one DMC combo in the end
Goodness this video and your channel as a whole is a godsend
Have finished at least the dude's campaign in Assault Spy. Highly recommended, it's hilariously fun!
This video rules too, am totally keeping tabs on Enenra and Ultra Age!
would be really sick to see any of the Ninja Gaiden games on here.
Thank you for making this.
I've been wanting to play more stylish action games, and these look fun af.
Enera is a game I'm super stoked for. It's basically Ninja Gaiden 4, and I'm here for it.
You should try Castle Crashers. Even if it might be a beat em up but not a hack and slash, the amount of juggling can still make it character action.
Best montage I've seen in a while
more people need to try character action games frfr
Thank you for this video, now i have more games to play.
God bless you, I've been trying to remember what Icey was called for years now. I can finally lay this mystery to rest.
looks like it's time to fill up my steam wishlist even more
Wish the character action game genre was made more often. The entire triple A market is flooded with First Person Shooters and Walking Simulator and the Indie market is flooded with Rouge likes and DOOM Clones.
Play ultrakill
The game which is often described as devil may quake
Late reply, but the market seems to be improving a bit thanks to recent outings like Soulstice and upcoming ones like Genokids. Possibly Gori: Cuddly Carnage and Yasuke: A Lost Descendant as well.
Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is not a character action game as such, but nonetheless a very good 3D beat-em-up not unlike Sifu or God Hand or Absolver.
You should try Odin Sphere, there's 5 playable characters and they all have at least 20-30 or something unique skills
Gwendolyn chad
im happy to see you played some of the games I wanted you to play
the love is too fast
why this made me felt confidences that i can at least recreate the fraction of the mechanic here in a game i plan to make?
I noticed you're taste for chill beats with stylish action games so i would like to recommend this song called "ba-da-ba" from Memories Of Tokyo-To
hehe ruclips.net/video/JqzVtJT7ycw/видео.html
Oh you beat me to it
heartless and dreadful really looks like it has potential but it also looks like it needs a bunch more time in the oven which i guess is to be expected from a game in development lmao. I hope it gets the polish it needs
I am so jelous about your skill. its just your high level of execution is just stunning in every game you play
I cant unsee the obvious moves taken from devil may cry
Respect for anyone showing off Z2 chaos
I'd recommend Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae if you're purely looking for a game based on its combat. Basically it's a Vergil's combat game
Thanks for this. This is exactly what I need ^^
Assault spy should come to consoles.
Freesia is one of my classic combo games that is cute too~
Sick ass music choice. It's kill or be killed. I feel like Muramasa the Demon blade would fit into this genre. If you haven't played it, check it out.
I’m surprised by the number of these I already have or are in my wishlist.
where has assault spy been my entire life
nice idea I always wanted to see videos like this .
been looking forward to this
0:58 GENOCIDE CUTTAH!!!
Peeped that dirty bird song good taste
Love seeing other spectacle fighters but my main thing is I want one thats coop fully! No one makes em coop and its probably for a good reason I just know me and my best friend loved even just the little coop mode the switch port of dmc 3 added
Was NOT expecting to see Fairy Bloom Freesia, holy shit. lol. I've been meaning to play that one for a while since I loved the dev's other game, Sakuna.
A weird one I'd add to this list is Earth's dawn. The art is weird, but you can do some cool stuff.
Also, a lot of jrpgs go with stylish combat, stuff like the Tales series, Xillia 2 comes to mind right off the bat. Tales of arise as well but that one doesnt let you combo bosses :-v
And for a much simpler game, Dust: an elysian tail has some cool stuff in it. Yes a lil limited, but I think it's worth checking out.
If there's a part 2 to this, I'd be interested :-).
thanks brother i'll add em to the list
I am playing Xillia 1 right now. Almost ending the game, and damn, if the first game is amazing already, i wonder what i will do on the second one.
@@staysharp2453 Glad you're liking it :-).
Imo xillia 1 has great combat from the get go, but the story takes time to pick up.
We dont talk about the hallways tho
Can't forget Oneechanbara Origin
Perfect! I was looking for dmc clones
Well done ❤
Fairy Bloom Freesia? God I haven't touched that game in years so that's a bit refreshing to see
Love to see that ICEY love
yeah, keep making videos like this.
this is very useful.
There is a zen-like groove you get into when you have a firm grasp on the mechanics in games like these. Being in that groove is arguably half the fun and replay value of these games. 😂
The only thing I hate about this video is the amount of searching I have to do to see if it on ps4.
Transformers Devastation is a good one too, although its been delisted from storefronts but there is always a way >:)
Thank u for this
I see ICEY , I click
Man haven't heard about Icey in ages
Played it on switch as a game i never heard about before and loved it
Never finished it though, i should get on that
YEAH, SAKUNA CLIPS
I need to get better at using the rainment for extensions and movement; I'm mostly very dependent on specials, but damn, this is great to see. I need to get some of these other games.
Studios should be paying up for making good advertisement for them.
The Sengoku Basara games from the third game and onwards would make for a good stylish game show off.
i think this is how fighting game companies must put their fighting game franchises to platformer
icey goes so hard. one of the few games i had to get on mobile. then not long after it came to consoles and had to buy it again.
Surprised to see Mahou Arms here. Nice taste.
I didnt know Oneechanbara z2 chaos had so much depth, I still prefer Oneechanbara Origin, but I might have to give Z2 another try
Definitely need that second song name
Awesome video
Imagine devil may cry players tryharding these games👀🔥
Icey is such a good game, one of my most satisfying platinums
scarlet nexus is on sale now pretty freaking lit
Have you ever styled on Astral Chain or Scarlet Nexus? Both games seems to have potential but I guess they are kinda limited to what they can offer but still fun nonetheless.
Needs an updated version or a part 2
(snaps photo) Neat!
What's the second song?
