Hey everyone, just your friendly neighborhood character action obsessed weeaboo. This is a regular reminder that "character action" is NOT the same thing as "hack 'n slash." I feel like this should be obvious, but I see it all time. Thank you.
I very much believe there is an actual general definition, there just isn't very many of them; MOST entries into Devil May Cry (Looking at you DMC2), Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising, and a very small handful of others. It takes a lot to be character action, and a lot of developers don't really care to go that far. A heavy emphasis on style over efficiency, and a bombastically over the top world are also key factors in a character action. Where as hack 'n slash is more on the level of a Warriors game, Nier Automata, and DMC2 where the actual depth of raw combat is significantly reduced by comparison to allow for stricter, but often times more experimental gameplay; as well as implementing various other forms of action. Neither one is necessarily better. Its just choice. The names themselves also speak to the differences; character action is far more focused on the actual character and personality bleeding through every movement, every attack, every decision you make from start to finish; where as hack 'n slash, like the name suggests, is far more mindless by comparison in the same ways but in its simplicity allows them to cover a much broader net. Character action, to me at least, is a game where, no matter what's going on, the rule of cool always wins; hack 'n slash isn't as necessarily limited.
Warriors games are literally built on style>efficiency and over the top worlds, dude. Every single character has unique, stylish attacks, and the whole point of the game's killing a bunch of people with said attacks on massive maps. By your own definition, Warriors is as character action as they come. As for being mindless, my favorite Warriors game, Pirate Warriors 3, I'd definitely say isn't. You might get trough the game spamming one attack over and over again (which I'm pretty sure's the same for all DMC games), but certain enemy units are best disposed of with certain types of combos. AOE, a single target focused hit, a barrage, the list goes on and on. Of course, this is more prominent on higher difficulties, but so is every action game's combat. And that is indeed the problem, people assume character action is something that you can define, when it really isn't. It's incredibly subjective. It's based more on feelings than consistency. That's what we call a colloquialism. You can talk about what your idea of a character action game is all ya want, I just don't agree with you trying to define it. Mostly since ya can't. For another example, by your own definition, God Hand isn't a character action game, since the most efficient moves aren't the flashiest one (at least from what I remember of it), and due to its brutal difficulty, you're encouraged to be efficient and not flashy. I know you feel that it's a character action, and that is indeed my point.
Really agree with preferring Amelia over Asaru, Asaru's a ton of fun but Amelia just steals any thunder he ever could've hoped to have had. Plus the dev definitely designed the game with tech like Jump Cancelling in mind which can lead to ludicrous strings of combos which can take her to the top of the map if you keep it up. Not sure if you'e aware of this but if you cancel Asaru's card throws with dashes or attacks and the cards remain attached to the enemy, you can press Down on the d-pad to manually detonate which adds a whole ton of clmbo potential for the dude
Was actually looking for Character Action type of games that you can play with Players or CPU like a Fighting Game, doesn't seem to be alot out there. Is GoW Online counted on this?
Interesting titles. I am sorta a moderate fan of Stylish Action,Character Action, whatever you want to call games. I love Bayonetta. And I really enjoy DMC 1 & 3 as well as MGR. Dude I clicked on this video cause I thought the blue haired guy on the cover art of Assault Spy was the Persona 3 Protagonist. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Thanks for this video, fox. Are you playing with Ps4 controller? I'm having problems with Lucah, the L2 and R2 are perma binded to other buttons, giving them each 2 functions.
Character Action? I've considered them "spectacle fighter"s since the late 2000s because they are a spectacle when done right and a testicle when fucked up. Not sure where I first found the term but I swear it was before Yahtzee caused it to become a popular term. Honestly, the testicle part was coined by Yahtzee and is probably because I took to "spectacle fighter".
The fact that this video has several magnitudes less views than a lot of your other videos is a travesty (a Distorted Travesty, even). It really goes to show that there's just no awareness for these games, and that character action is still ludicrously niche.
The publisher is a bunch of incompetent baffoons who don't even care about the stuff they publish. Just google NISA fails for full info, I can only tell so much without ranting like an idiot. Most importantly for me, they took the publishing rights for Ys 8 away from people who usually publish the series in English, and did a very shitty job. They promised simultaneous release on all consoles, but one day before the release they said they have to delay PC version because the port turned out to be shit. And on PS4 the translation for the game wasn't really good (they called a crater "BIG HOLE"). So, they announced that they'll make a new translation from scratch and they planed the new translation to get released alongside PC version. PC version's new release date came... And they delayed it again. They did release the re-translation, and it was better but still full of mistakes. Then, the third PC release date came, and they delayed it AGAIN. And when the 4th release date came, the PC version got released AND WAS A BARELY PLAYABLE MESS. They delayed it 8 MONTHS and the port was still shit. Beta-testers even said that they created new issues that weren't there before. It took them around 3 more months to fix the port post-release. All of this just screams incompetence. I then googled for a bit, and found that this isn't the first time either. They created game-breaking bugs during localization on PS2, and since you can't patch anything on PS2, they just decided not to do anything about it. This was my first experience with NIS America, and needless to say I am not giving them another bloody penny.
here we go again everyone loves to forget that ninja theory makes character action games too and damn good ones at that look don't be shy trust me I have played them they are good my dude and seams to forget that they make dawn good story's. So where is my ninja theory retrospective series?
Lucah looks cool and all, but it doesn't look like character action. I'd say 3D is a necessary pre-requisite of the genre. Without that you've got some sort of Dark Souls-inspired 2D brawler.
I disagree with you on this one as there are a couple of games in 2d spectrum with character action style like Dust Elysian tail, Icey, The Vagrant, Abyss Odyssey, Strider, some older Ys games, & many others that I totally forgot its names. Meanwhile a more souls-like 2d have its own games too like Salt & Sanctuary, Death's Gambit, Dead Cells for example.
I've no doubt I'd enjoy the game, I've enjoyed other 2D action games, I just disagree with it being filed under "character action". In response to Croz, I played Dust and Strider. Strider's a classic old-school platformer and Dust is the same thing with RPG mechanics and combos.
Peace Master Ah yes, here's some more that I think fit character action game: Guacamelee series, The messenger Timespinner Sundered Crosscode Tower Hunter:Erza's Trial Dustforce Bleed series Dusty Revenge Though I admit some of them also more of a metroidvania while having combos, techs, etc.
When was the term character action game coined. It's so vague imo and it sounds redundant/dumb. Why did people stop calling them hack and slash games....
Lucah really isn't a character action game at all. If it is then so is CrossCode or any other hack'n slash with relatively fast combat. Character action games (I like calling them Spectacle Fighters) is supposed to be a more specific sub-genre.
I played it a little. Unless the game changes extremely dramatically from the first hour, it's definitely not character action. I dunno, isometric hack'n slash or action RPG? I know those are pretty vague since "hack'n slash" apparently includes anything from Diablo to Devil May Cry but that's why sub-genres are more specific. Otherwise there's no point to them.
There's a lot of folks doing interesting things in the space on a smaller scale, I think you'd be surprised if you tried some out! And I'm not just saying that because I made one.
So you R3Ly /_ ik3 CHARACTER ACTION 6/-\ me$ ???!? How funny you spell SLASHERS. Seriously stop it, but i think that simple comment isn't enough to convince you, in this week i will make video to finally explain that character action is wrong.

Can we have a Second Indie Showcase for Hack'n Slash Character Action games, i'm really interested in this kind of game from indies
Since theres way more Of thosse since This video
Dude I clicked on this video cause I thought the blue haired guy on the cover art of Assault Spy was the Persona 3 Protagonist. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
Thanks for this video, fox. Are you playing with Ps4 controller? I'm having problems with Lucah, the L2 and R2 are perma binded to other buttons, giving them each 2 functions.
Ya, I was using a PS4 controller for one playthrough and keyboard for another, but I dont remember having that issue
The "fighter" part is a bit iffy to me, as that makes me think it should be a sub-genre of fighting games instead.
What's the game name at @0:36 ?
The fact that this video has several magnitudes less views than a lot of your other videos is a travesty (a Distorted Travesty, even). It really goes to show that there's just no awareness for these games, and that character action is still ludicrously niche.
The first game looks like exactly like DMC just re-skined to look like a different game
The vibe I got was DMC reskinned with Persona visual style
Assault Spy looks great, too bad I don't have PC
Lucah looks really, REALLY similar to Hyper Light Drifter. Right down to all the diamond shape effects.
What's the name of the game featured at 0:40 to 0:45 please, haven't seen it before.
Any recommendation for a cheap games like this on Steam? Need some refreshment during Lockdown lol
Interesting action games, but what is the name of the one in 0:40???
what was the name of the game at 0.38? I haven't heard of that one.
How about you spotlight the new Initial 2 on steam?
Does Hyper Light Drifter count as character action?
Assault Spy looks pretty fun and I'm pretty sure I can tolerate its less savory aspects.
*sees the publiser*
Oh. Okay then. Moving on.
What wrong with the publisher ?

Initial 2 New Stage
here we go again everyone loves to forget that ninja theory makes character action games too and damn good ones at that look don't be shy trust me I have played them they are good my dude and seams to forget that they make dawn good story's. So where is my ninja theory retrospective series?
I cringe when i see people saying that Lost soul aside looks like Devil may cry, They don't even know...
@@Next-xm2dh okay that game looks cool as fuck dude thank for telling me about it
LSA looks amazing. Some people are just straight haters sometimes but I promise once the game releases, every action fan will be buying it.
@@etiennelatour3435 and what do we do to the haters
That s right we dab on them
Lucah looks cool and all, but it doesn't look like character action. I'd say 3D is a necessary pre-requisite of the genre. Without that you've got some sort of Dark Souls-inspired 2D brawler.
Hi there, I think if you tried the game you might be pleasantly surprised how strong the character action influence is!
I can imagine Nero from DMC working really well in 2D. No idea where you got Dark Souls from.
I've no doubt I'd enjoy the game, I've enjoyed other 2D action games, I just disagree with it being filed under "character action". In response to Croz, I played Dust and Strider. Strider's a classic old-school platformer and Dust is the same thing with RPG mechanics and combos.
Peace Master Ah yes, here's some more that I think fit character action game:
Guacamelee series,
The messenger
Timespinner
Sundered
Crosscode
Tower Hunter:Erza's Trial
Dustforce
Bleed series
Dusty Revenge
Though I admit some of them also more of a metroidvania while having combos, techs, etc.

When was the term character action game coined. It's so vague imo and it sounds redundant/dumb. Why did people stop calling them hack and slash games....
You can thank Koei Tecmo for ruining the hack and slash genre.
Hack and slash refers to games like diablo
Stylish action/character action refers to games like devil may cry
Character action is so niche you doint even know what genre to call it or what even qualifies for it.
Lucah really isn't a character action game at all. If it is then so is CrossCode or any other hack'n slash with relatively fast combat. Character action games (I like calling them Spectacle Fighters) is supposed to be a more specific sub-genre.
Hi! Have you played Lucah? If so I'd like to hear more about where you think it might fit. Thanks!
Thanks for your reply! I think you might be surprised as you keep playing.
This kind of game just doesn't work well in indie, you NEED the flashy fx and polish that only comes with a big budget
I think its worth a shot still, limitations can push creativity by a lot.
There's a lot of folks doing interesting things in the space on a smaller scale, I think you'd be surprised if you tried some out! And I'm not just saying that because I made one.
What? Why? Assault Spy has all the flash. It's just duller DMC.
So you R3Ly /_ ik3 CHARACTER ACTION 6/-\ me$ ???!?
How funny you spell SLASHERS. Seriously stop it, but i think that simple comment isn't enough to convince you, in this week i will make video to finally explain that character action is wrong.
And how i told i did
