I bloody cried at the end of dmc3.
    That ending captured the sentence
"You have won the battle but lost the war."

That's a good way of looking at it, though that also means that Vergil lost the battle but won the war since he decided to fall into the abyss. Perspective, always a funny thing XD.

For me, action games such as these three you mentionned are the reason i play majorly this genre because of the thrill of the challenge, playing those on the hardest difficulty and getting the platinum.
    Especially Dmc 4 and NG3RE.

I actually started on MGR: Revengence when I was younger. I didn't even know what character action was. Bayonetta 1 will always be peak action gaming. Maybe DMC 5 will change my mind. I really didn't like DMC 3 that much. It feels way too dated to play in 2024. Really clunky for me. Sounds like it was more of a classic for the time it was released in

I don't blame you. I beat it and loved it but I'm trash at combos now in DMC, every DMC game just doesn't work for me anymore and 3 doesn't feel the same at all. I can't combo and I don't remember any mechanics so the game is just clunky to me.

Glad to have across this video, it's nice and quaint. The music at some points, especially the Style Points section, was a bit louder than your voice, however.
    Warning: Colossal comment incoming.
In terms of my personal journey with character action games... it's a weird one. The game arguably isn't so much character action, as that it has *combat* like a character action game.
    This one being Darksiders 2.
I first came across it when it got randomly recommended to YT to me, as a lad of about... what, ten or eleven years old. I barely knew any English, but the darky fantasy art direction, the characters, the lore and music hooked me in. I was rather squeamish about gore at the time, but i still pressed on because of how cool everything was to me, and how it held my attention.
I watched that walkthrough all the way to the end-- which in hindsight, i kind of wish i hadn't done, so that I could have experienced it all myself directly.
Similarly so with the first Darksiders game, of which i watched a walkthrough after watching the Darksiders 2 one. And that one had my interest equally so.
I think i watched another walkthrough of both games later in life, one of them being in Dutch. But i didn't actually *buy* either of the games until some years later, because i adhered strongly to age ratings.
A Dutch copy of Darksiders 2 i found in a Gamestop in Denmark when on holiday there, whereas a copy of Darksiders 1 i managed to find in a Game Mania store in my country of birth.
I really wanted it, but there was some kind of confusing situation where my dad at first agreed to it, then didn't, had a convo with the cashier about it who was about to put it back, then i said "No, i want it" and he agreed to it, followed my dad outside, he got miffed i got it anyway, but then we went on with our day.
I don't remember much of my time with Darksiders 1, other than getting frustrated at a section with a Sand Worm, and a funny glitch with a monster that kept vertically spinning in place. Been replaying it recently on PC, and though I have issues with pacing and structure, still enjoyable.
I remember my time with Darksiders 2 much more, so i'm looking forward to replaying that one.
During all this time, i was definitely known with God of War, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. But God of War was too brutal and nasty for me, DMC i just had no interest in and barely knew anything about it, and Bayonetta just plain put me off.
To this day, i still carry great love for the Darksiders franchise, in spite of all their shortcomings, and wish and hope for it being able to properly finish its story in a satisfactory and deserving way.
Experiences with character action didn't end there. At one point during my last year of college, i got my hands on Heavenly Sword for PS3. This one is more purely focused on combat, though with some weird shooting segments here and there, and not really focused on the Style aspect as such.
It's one of the few character action titles (the other being GoW 3) dubbed in Dutch-- and despite the weird shooting segments, it wasn't bad. Both the dub and the experience as a whole.
Though i'm not clambering to replay it every so often, the ending made me very emotional, and I believe it's the last game I finished on the PS3 during the time of living in that particular house.
Later on, another would enter my radar. The Castlevania: Lords of Shadows series, to be exact. Got the first one for PS3, but that one kept freezing. So I later bought it again on PC.
It was a *long* game, but I had a nice time with it. Like Darksiders, it has great art direction and fantastic music, with enjoyable combat-- as well as a system with combat that nudges it closer to your definition of what a character action game would need.
Namely, a kind of "style" meter. The better you do in inflicting damage, avoiding damage, and keeping that up, the more you fill up a certain meter. Once full, every hit on an enemy now releases magic orbs that can be sucked into either the Red Magic or Blue Magic container, for extra damage or healing upon hitting enemies, when either one is activated.
Still had some boring and frustrating bits, and i've not replayed it since, but again-- I had a positive experience with it. In part helped thanks to my inexperience with the Castlevania franchise as a whole, for i know that fans of the franchise are *not* as fond of the Lords of Shadow retool as part of the series.
But similarly to LoS 1, i had a good time (bar some frustrations) with LoS2. It expanded the combat by making the Red Magic and Blue Magic meters into full-on weapons with their own movesets and skill trees, and even ways of merging either Magic with Spells. You could activate the Chaos Claws (Red Magic) and select the Blood Dagger spell for example, to throw flaming daggers that explode on impact, or the Void Sword (Blue Magic) with the Mist Spell to dash through enemies and freeze them.
I didn't make the most of the combat system, and some enemies are plain annoying. But the game's bosses are *not* part of its shortcomings. Which are many.
Still, not wholly a Character Action game in the way that DMC and Bayonetta seem to be.
Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death was also a game i have experience with close to that time, though i don't feel super strongly about it. It's an alright time, with a setting (Mesoamerica and its mythological elements) that isn't explored too often. Marlow and Tep are fun.
I also somewhat recently got to experience Dante's Inferno as an actual game, but i've found that I enjoyed the things surrounding the game more interesting than actually playing it. The sound and art direction --ESPECIALLY the sound direction-- are great stuff.
Outside of all these, i'm also known with Splatterhouse 2010, Van Helsing, Ghost Rider, Anarchy Reigns, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
And in *some* ways, i would want to include No Straight Roads. And the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time trilogy as well.
Over Time I looked up more stuff about the DMC series and Bayonetta, and watched MythyMoo's playthrough of all GoW games (after finding his channel from a Dante's Inferno playthrough), so i have gotten more known with those series and their mechanics as a result.
    However.
Later on, during last year, a new character action game was released by name of Soulstice. And by your definition, i'd say that this game fits that definition of a Character Action game the most.
-Seven different weapons, each with their own purposes and moves, from a bladed whip and punching daggers to a sword that transforms into a hammer and a compound bow.
-A style meter and even style *guide* to what actions can net you more points in combat.
-Ranking combat encounters based on Time, Damage Taken and Style Points earned. A "Devil Trigger" (called Rapture State) and special attacks performed from a full combo string tied TO the style meter, with the attack differing based on the specific weapon used for the last attack in the string.
Pair this with --yet again-- really strong art direction, mainly where it concerns characters and enemies, good lore for the world, generally good voice acting, and two main characters that have become some of my favourites in any character action game.
It has its own shortcomings, like some annoying enemies and bosses. But yet, it is a game that I carry a lot of love for. A I dearly hope that, like Darksiders, it will be able to get more titles that bring good experiences, and bring a satisfactory conclusion to the story it seeks to tell.
    And that's it.
Absolute whale of a comment on my end. But if you took the time to read through it all-- thank you for doing so, and I wish you a good new week, as well as fun and good luck on further projects.

Thank you so much for leaving this comment! I love a good read and was fascinated the whole time. I've actually been thinking of redoing this video in my current format because I think I've gotten much better and would love to do this topic TRUE JUSTICE. I actually recently watched a video on the Lords of Shadows series and was pretty interested at the Castlevania series taking a stab at action, If anything the games have a very cool presentation! Again thank you for your comment and the kind words, I hope you have a wonderful coming week as well!

@@LancePlusPlus sorry for the late reply, but thank you for taking the time to reply yourself! i'm glad the ramblings of a stranger proved interesting to you :P
Wish you good luck on redoing this video when time may allow for it! If you already feel like you've improved a lot in only half a year, then that's a positive sign. And yeah, the Lords of Shadows games definitely have a strong presentation, both visually and sound-wise. There's quite a story behind the creation of the series, though, and i'd say many Castlevania fans wouldn't really consider it "Castlevania", just "Lords of Shadow". You can play it separate from the mainline Castlevania games, as it's more of its own continuity and mythos.
They're flawed games and LoS2 especially isn't often viewed in a positive light, but i still had a nice time with it in spite of its issues.
You're most welcome, and thank you in turn-- and all the same back to you!

Bayonetta 1. I truly believe that B1 has the best combat out of any game released to this day. The skill ceiling is insanely high, but even people who suck at it can make it look cool. Building up to massive demon fist combo finisher is one of the most satisfying things in video games, the enemies are perfect (except for kinships, fuck them) and the only flaw I can recognize with this game is that the few gimmick sections do suck ass, but that means almost nothing in the face of what should be considered by everyone to be at least a top five greatest of all time action game.

Thoughts on fps games like rainbow six, or any other tactical shooters, also what do you think about the far cry series?

    • @LancePlusPlus
      @LancePlusPlus  2 года назад +1

I think R6 Siege is a really fun game with all the operators that they have, providing a nice bit of variety in play styles. As for Far Cry, I do believe that the later entries such as 5-6 are cool but they certainly wont beat Far Cry 3 or Far Cry Blood Dragon! 🏄🏽‍♂️
