I love hearing the gulls in the background, and am very grateful for this video. I need to just jump in and give it a go. Love your results. Thank you for this video.
Thank you for your great instructions and ideas. I also enjoy your comments on local weather and flowers. Sounds very similar to us in Montana where we had a very warm Easter but expect wet snow tonight.
I only discovered your pottery videos about a month ago watching pottery vids on youtube. Love yours, thanks for taking the time to make these!! I am only a hobby potter 5 years now.
Congrats on being 5 years in. That means you are an addict. I sometimes think I need help with my single focus addiction. There is nothing I would rather be doing and always something new to learn. I am glad I can help your development.
The 01 bisque is only for red clay #20 from Laguna in California, that is the one I use. It may work for other red earthenware clays but you should test before doing a lot of work.
I’m a little over a year into pottery and love it. Haven’t done much glazing yet but love your technique. I think I will try it. Teaching myself. Thank You. Next learning curve will be the kiln settings.
I think I want everything you make! I saw your video where you show how you did the stencils. Wow. What amazing work. I doubt I could ever reproduce those! I have to try the painting of the flowers you did. I am not that experienced in painting so will have to practice on paper first, for awhile, lol Such beautiful shapes of the mugs. Love how you throw in so much extra, like stacking bisqueware for firing. I never knew you could do that.
Love the little plates/bowls on the wall at 13:40 are they basically examples of different glazes? Would love to have a closer look at them or maybe even a video on how you made them
Hello Vaughan! You are an inspiration! I just love these mugs. I will be trying out your technique for sure. I realize this video is 10 months old, however, do you have any of the flower mugs available for sale? ( or similar mugs ) Time stamps 21:07, 22:33, 22:42, 22:52, 23:21. Do you ship to Ohio? My very best to you!
Wow. You make it look soo easy!! Can you please tell us what brushes you use? The name and number? I would so very much appreciate it if you could show how you scrape the underglaze off when you don’t like what you’ve done!! I have tried to wipe it off but of course the color becomes part of the mug at some point and makes it look bad. Your work is just amazing!!! What you said about having something new for people to see when they come back is so important. As well as having pieces they can collect. Making sure everyone can afford something is also great!!! You have done many many craft shows that’s for sure. I wonder if you would do a video on what you have learned? That would help soo many people. Thank you sooo much for all you do!!! PS lol. What is the clear glaze that you use on your spring flower mugs?
Thanks for the comment. The brushes can be found at any art store, just ask for Japanese paint brushes. The fan brush is also commonly found in art stores. I use a scalpel blade to erase mistakes. Beautiful! I’ve only just found your channel, I work with earthenware, a white clay and a terracotta clay. I have a problem with my glaze shivering if I clear glaze over slip, have you any solutions please? Could you also tell me what temperatures in Celsius cones that you use are ? Thankyou for sharing, really great work! Take care and stay safe x
I had the same thing happen. It means the glaze is under too much compression and pops the glaze off. Usually on the corner areas, rims, handles. It can also be that the clay shrinks more than the slip, even that the slip is being applied after the clay has dried too much. You might want to try the slip recipe in Robin Hoppers book The Ceramic Spectrum. My glaze now does not shiver on red clay with a cone 01 bisque firing. Email me at vsmithpots@eastlink.ca and I will send you the recipe. I think this is the worst issue to solve. White earthenware seems very vulnerable to this.
Crazing is when the clay is not fired to maturity and therefore has too little compression on the glaze. Celadons are fired a lot higher than cone 01 so the bisque has nothing to do with the crazing. You need to have less expansion in the glaze or more compression in the clay by firing the clay higher.
I am another who really loves watching and learning from you. Thank you for making these videos. They are truly inspirational. I wonder whether you have bisque fired your pieces before you apply the under glaze or is the clay leather hard? Thanks again. Love your videos.

Vaughn you mentioned you bisque to 01 to prevent crazing…then is that the only firing you do with the underglaze on green ware with a clear over?

I got one from the Mastering cone six glaze book.
Do you ever have a problem with transparent glaze over underglazes? What sort of firing schedules do you use?
Clear glazes need to be applied thinly and fired to maturity, then cooled as quick as your kiln allows with no soak on the way down.
Hi,
Love your flowers. I will give it a try:) What is the cone 6 clear glaze you use? I'm looking for one. Yours sounds perfect to me.
I am going to try another recipe since this one gets a little cloudy when thick. Send me an email and I will take a photo of the page in my book.

Please do a video of how your putting the letters on. / do you dip those mugs in clear glaze after you paint with underglaze then fire?. Thank You.
It is just an alphabet rubber stamp from Michaels crafts pressed into slightly soft clay
Vaughan Smith thank you for responding. I shall go get me some. 😁
How bisque firing to ^01 to avoid crazing? I'm so tired of celadons crazing. Would that solve the problem?
Crazing is when the clay is not fired to maturity and therefore has too little compression on the glaze. Celadons are fired a lot higher than cone 01 so the bisque has nothing to do with the crazing. You need to have less expansion in the glaze or more compression in the clay by firing the clay higher.
Are you cutting the paper stencils out every time or can you reuse them. Is earthenware the only type clay you use?
I mostly use cone 6 clay. the stencils are single use.
Very Nice work!!! On the flower mugs, what stage did you put the clear on? Did you bisque fire first? What cone do you fire to?
Cone 6 and I bisque to cone 06
Do you put a clear glaze over the underglazes?
Yes
What is the brand of your underglaze paints?
Duncan, Amaco, Spectrum.

I paint on leather hard clay, thanks for watching.
Very nice video! Have you tried Amaco Velvet for under paintings? How does Duncan compares to it? Your paint seems to flow nicely.
Yes we like Velvets too, they are similar to the Duncan. The Spectrum are a bit jelly like and do not flow off the brush nicely. Thanks for watching.
