Ash Vs Evil Dead did a great job of balancing the comedy and horror. Also the tree scene from the 1st movie Sam Rami regretted it so he used the second one to change it.
The reason for the "soft reboot" is they switched production companies and didn't have the rights to the footage from the first film. So they had to reshoot the events of that one in a concise way. If you just start watching this one as the demon camera is flying towards Ash, it flows almost perfectly with the ending of the first movie.
I would call it a straight reboot. It’s a completely different film. It’s just Evil Dead with a better budget and different take. The original was serious and this one was more comedic.
@@jasonnunez6411 but Ash Vs Evil Dead shows both are somehow canon. :) I think it works if you just chop the recap recreation off the beginning of ED2. :)
The scene with the deer head where Ash goes crazy is one of the most insane things I've ever seen in a film, and I loved every second of it. After everything that's happened, I can't blame him for going nuts.
Essentially, Bruce Campbell has confirmed, several times, that this movie is a sequel since the first 10 minutes is a recap of the first. The movie truly begins with Ash flying through the trees following the ending of the first film where he dies, gets possesed, and resurrected from the sun. Thats also why the beginning goes by so quickly and why Linda dies the same way as in the first movie as well as Ash getting jumped by the Kandarian demon
Evil Dead 1 and 2 are one story, but a little confusing. And, they are not zombies they are demons. In Evil Dead 1 they go to the cabin and find the book of the dead. Everyone gets possessed. Evil Dead 2 which was supposed to be part of the first movie, Ash becomes possessed and gets his iconic chainsaw hand. That is supposed to be one story, but they didn't have a budget to make his hand a chainsaw. The original second movie was supposed to be him back in time. Which became the third movie, Army of Darkness. They couldn't just make Army of Darkness, without finishing the first story, because it would make no sense, where did he get the chainsaw hand.
In case you didn't catch it, the pages in the book showed the portal that was describes as a doorway in time and space, the hero who fought the deadites in the past and it was a drawing of Ash with his chainsaw arm.
As a soap girlie, I have to chime in here. Cassie DePaiva is a legend for sure. I loved her as Blair (Todd and Blair supercouple), and yes she played Starr's mother. She also played Blair when they did General Hospital/One Life and AMC/One Life crossovers as all those shows are set in the same universe. I live that Roxy is a fan of the same shows I watched! ABC soaps are the best, but NBC had some gems too.
The chainsaw arm is one of the coolest weapons ever created in film history! This movie blends horror and comedy so well! I’m so hyped for you guys to see Army of Darkness! (Also make sure you guys watch the theatrical cut bc the director’s cut has a infamous alternative ending but theatrical one is more iconic and memorable)
It's funny you mention "Swamp Boy" because in the comics, Ash actually fights Jason Vorhees himself! And one hypothesis suggests that Jason is actually a Deadite brought to life by the Necronomicon!
You SHEJECTS are looking gorgeous as always & it's a wild honor watching you both react to my favorite Evil Dead Movie. This was Sam Raimi at his wildest by this point in the series & i loved every second of it. This was fun✨
The problem with everyone trying to let you guys know what's going on with this movie is that, other than the fact most of them are wrong, they're making those comments after you've already seen it. Which is why I did it on the reaction for the first film, because it was more likely you'd be able to catch it shortly after watching the second film. So I'm gonna do that here, too. Army of Darkness was a special case, because unlike Evil Dead 2, they WERE able to use footage from Evil Dead 2 for the recap. And they did use some. Key word being some, as they also completely reshot some stuff, changed Linda's actor for the third consecutive time (or fourth if you count the proof of concept short film 'Within The Woods'). Which leads to some more continuity errors. And, of course, Ash is a slave in the beginning of Army of Darkness, so... Yay? But that obviously wasn't the case at the end of this film. There is an Army of Darkness graphic novel that mixes the two pretty well, but it's not technically canon. But, Army of Darkness is also a story told by Ash to his S-Mart coworkers. So, even if the events he described are basically the same as what actually happened, it doesn't mean they happened the way he described them. Ash likes to embellish. It's in his nature.
I think they film these reactions several weeks in advance, so there's a strong chance they've seen the second one already by the time the first reaction comes out
@@alexp601 I know. That's why I said I gave the rundown on what happened with this film on the reaction to the first. Because they will have seen the second film already, and won't have been informed on why the beginning confuses everyone. Though I guess Greg diminished that confusion by telling them to essentially forget the first film.
@Tara @Roxy so the reason why this film was kind of like a reboot was because there was a shift in rights after the first film came out and Sam Raimi was totally unable to continue from the first film. He then decided to make a soft reboot and create this film and its sequel. I'm sure there's a bunch of trivia and information about this that you can discover on your own but that's the reason why this is so very different from the first film.
I saw all the Evil Dead films, in theaters, back in the 80s. Regardless of rights issues, and not being allowed to use footage from the first, Evil Dead 2 is a sequel.
Linda’s headless corpse busting in with the chainsaw is one of the funniest things ever. My favorite thing about the Deadites is that they have an epic sense of humor.
The movie officially starts when Ash is picked up and crashes through the trees. Rami was unable to get the rights to use footage from the first film, so they had to re-film a condensed recap.

Army of Darkness (1992) is the third in the trilogy followed by Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series which ran for three 10 episode seasons from 2015 to 2018. All the other movies are a remake and don't fit in the original cannon.

Raimi and Campbell wanted to make a direct sequel to the first Evil Dead, but they couldn't acquire the rights to their own movie, so the opening 20+ minutes of this film are a loose retelling of the original. The sequel really picks up where the original left off, with Ash being hit by the Evil force that knocks him through the woods.
LOVE seeing the SheJects tackling this franchise. Really, really hope you guys also tackle the remake from 2013. Legit one of the best modern horror movies out there. Way less campy than the originals (campy is great but y’know).
I always think the mythology and behaviour of the evil dead makes a lot more sense when you realise the deadites/Sam Raimi just enjoy gleefully tormenting Bruce/Ash.
Love this. Yes it's a retelling but it still works. The whole franchise is a beautiful experience. You'll definitely want to see the next one. Love you guys
There's basically 2 sides of evil dead, the original/2013 reboot and it's sequels which are much more scary horror, and then that's the ash side which is this, ash vs the army of darkness, ash vs evil dead, and the comics, which are much more campy comedy/action with elements of horror.
Freddy Krueger's glove is in the work shed next to the door this Easter Egg lead to the Book of the Dead and the dagger to be in Jason Goes to Hell to pay tribute back This lead to Freddy vs Jason vs Ash wich was gonna be a sequel to Freddy vs Jason but ended up a comic when the movie never worked out
This is my favorite of all the Evil Dead movies! The first part of the movie is kinda a rehash/reboot of the first movie because they didn't own the rights to the first movie. Basically the sequel starts once Ash is possessed.
People can only get possessed when they are knocked out. Ash only changes when he is knocked unconscious. He only changes back with the dawn. The others could have changed back too if the sun had come up. The editing is so fast it's hard to follow, especially when watching it for the first time.
No hate to anyone who loves it but this one more than the first is just craziness with sprinkles of plot you don't care about because of the craziness. Can't wait till you get to the 2013 remake. It's an actual movie.
