In this video lesson, I talk about how Pino Palladino got his sound on the intro of Paul Young's, Wherever I Lay My Hat. I discuss choices of basses and effects to try to get near to Pino's sound. I also show you how to play the notes of the intro.
This bass video tutorial is suitable for absolute beginner bass players through to intermediate bassists.
You may want to check out my 'Bass Beginner Series'. The lessons in the series cover lots of topics for beginners, with tips on bass techniques, scales, arpeggios, pentatonic scales, and learning to read music.

Great video Greg. Are you favouring one pickup over the other or are both wide open?
200909will I have a John East preamp on that bass with a Blend control for pickups. I have it almost in the middle but just slightly more neck pickup.
Greg's Bass Shed thanks
Already play this, but must say top marks for the way you explained it, every stage covered - nice one.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it.
You've done a great job with this bass build. Sounds incredible.
Great thanks! This was the first bass that I put together, without any previous experience. I was worried that I might be wasting my time and money, particularly it being a fretless bass. But I was so pleased with the result and chuffed that I could get a lovely sound out of it!
I bought a cheap 67 Hofner Senator just before this song came out and pulled its frets out as the neck was awful. This was the first tune I tried to learn on it. Vibrato that goes flat as well as sharp is an element that's hard to replicate on a fretted unless you flex the neck which sounds cool playing harmonics
Sounds very nice. Good work!
Cheers thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Just been listening to "Stravinsky The Rite of Spring" and there certainly is an influence there ;-)
Jon Swift I remember studying The Rite Of Spring at school. If someone had told me it was the inspiration behind an amazing pop bass line, I would have paid more attention at the time!
you did a great job of the fretless jazz bass
Cheers John
I've seen him playing a Fender Jaguar recently.I love this lesson as I'm always searching for fretless tips.
I actually met Pino a while back and lent him my P-bass for an interview! He was very nice and down to earth.
@@GregsBassShedCool, I'm not surprised he's down to earth.
Great lesson Greg.I always thought he used a Boss OC-2 Octave pedal ?
Jon Swift he did for other tracks on that album, but not for this bass line as far as I am aware.
@@GregsBassShed Ok,cheers for that. Will be messing about with my chorus settings(MXR bass chorus deluxe pedal) later on Saturday night.
May I ask what kind of pickups do you have on that jazz bass? Great video!
Hi the pickups are Bartolini’s and it has a John East J-Retro preamp.
@@GregsBassShed thank you!!
This is an off-topic question indeed, but what did you use to colour the body. It looks great 👍
I used a product called ‘Wudtone’. It’s really simple to apply with a cloth.
I also coloured another bass this way.

@@GregsBassShed Thank you 🤘
@@magnusfahlstrom3262 no worries. Are you thinking of building a bass?
@@GregsBassShed I bought a cheap fretless bass on a whim as a backup for my defretted Jazz bass (after all, you've got to have a "real" fretless, don't you? 😅). It only has a clearcoated body, so I'm thinking of giving it some colour.
Hello, what is your neck relief and string height set at? Thanks
Hi Rob. I’m actually not sure as I got it set up by a tech I know once I had put the bass together. He tweaked it while I was at his workshop.
I play a lot of different players basses each week as part of my professional work and in general I have a lower action then most.
Sorry I can’t help more.
Has Pino used any Chorus in the Paul Young era (or at all)? my research only sums up to the OC-2 octaver, but the sound in his recordings is very "Chorused".
I agree with you, personally I hear what sounds like Chorus to me on some of Pino's bass lines but he was well-known for using the OC-2.
If you play octaves on a fretless bass then you will get a similar sound to the one you get with a chorus pedal. That may be happening on some of his bass lines but there could have been so many effects added at the studio as well when they were recording.
My video lesson on fretless bass explains more about that 'chorus effect' with 5ths and octaves towards the end: ruclips.net/video/4O6YQhZ8ies/видео.html
what strings are you using?
Hi, the strings on this bass are 'Elites' and are nickel roundwounds. I get a deal via The Bass Centre in the UK.
But you're not getting that tone.
Hi Rossco did you watch the lesson all the way through? You might have missed the part where I talk about bass choices and what Pino used.
The idea of this video is to show how to get that fretless sound using certain techniques NOT how to get the exact tone. You need to be Pino to do that!
@@GregsBassShedhe OP should already know that.Pino probably can't sound" exactly "like you either.Even I have nuances that are mine alone, every bassist does.Your fretless tone is enviable. As you mentioned he plays the Stingray.
