Jeep JL Wrangler Coilover Suspension with High Clearance Long Arm Installation by EVO - PART 1

- Since getting our Jeep JL Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited a little over a year and a half ago, Cindy and I have had a chance to test out a myriad of lift kits and this would include everything from a budget boost to a 4" coil lift. We did this to learn as much as we could and gain as much first hand experience as possible and mainly because we always knew this day was coming - the point of no return!
Based on our years of experience running EVO coilovers on both of our JK Wranglers, it really was just a matter of time before we installed set on our JL Wrangler as well. In addition to offering a crazy amount of flex out on the trail and allowing us to bomb across the desert in comfort, EVO has always done a great job of designing their coilover kits to offer an on pavement ride that we absolutely love. Of course, ride comfort is 100% subjective and the best part about coilovers is that they're completely adjustable. In other words, if you don't like what you get standard, you can always set them up with whatever spring rate and valving you prefer.
To help optimize our ride quality even more, we decided to have EVO High Clearance Long Arms installed at the same time as they do a great job of correcting suspension geometry. And, in this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see what all is involved to get them installed. We hope you enjoy.

Your editing was great! Very enjoyable and captivating to watch!
Thank you, we're so happy to hear you enjoyed the video as much as you did :)
Wow, those welds are something else. And burned-in upside down! Don't try that at home! lol
Looking good!
Tommy is an artist :)
Wow, very impressed with the work done by EVO. Those welds!!
Also, the fan and train portion of the video was a cool touch!
LOL - glad you liked the video and the extra touches. EVO can weld for sure!
Eddie, I have had that kit for the past 8 months or so, it is really awesome! Talk to Mel, but I would highly recommend putting limit straps on. It will flex so much it will put a lot of outward stress on the rear long arm brackets and will start pulling the welds off of the frame. My JL scored a 930 on the Metalcload CTI rig with the straps on.
I am assuming your wife does the editing. Something different about this vid. Edgy and looks like she is trying new things. Well done
Yup, Cindy does all the editing and we're glad you liked what you saw in this video :)
Tommy’s Welds are Amazing!
He be Stacking Dimes! 👍🏼
Super Cool.... Great Video! I couldn’t imagine taking on a Job like that… You can tell Mel’s Guys have this down to an Art! 👍😃
Mel definitely has a good crew working for him.
Looks amazing and love the video. Most definitely from all the videos you have sold me on Evo manufacturing components.
Awesome! Glad we could be of help :)
Great video, been waiting patiently for it, can't wait for Part 2!! Looks like great install and some beautiful workmanship done by EVO on the install and the mfr. of the parts!! Thanks for sharing!
It's one of the biggest reasons why we love running EVO products.
Always a good time at Mel's place. The build quality is amazing. And the gentleman doing the welding is phenomenal.
The welding really is amazing :)
Tommy's welds are amazing.Sure hope they pay him good! He's a true craftsman.
Eddie if you wanna get rid some of your 3-3.5 inch lift kit send it my way here in Cali, ill pay the shipping👍🏼😂 i have a 2019 like yours. grear vid btw
nice video! I had the evo long arm installed on my JKU and i love it! coilover are next
Jeep número uno..!
Buen fierro..
I knew it you were going to put king shocks just in time before the gladiator shows up
If I could give this 2 thumbs up I would. Fantastic!
Thank you, we really do appreciate it and are so happy to hear you enjoyed the video :)
Eddie. If someone was interested in this mod, what would it likely cost. VERY NICE!!
The long arms and coilovers come up to about $9000. Labor would be whatever the going rate of the shop who's installing it. Off Road Evolution was able to get everything done in 2 days if that helps.
It does. Thanks.
WOW!!! That's awesomesuace of a whole other level!
LOL - awesomesauce for sure!
Super impressive! looks great amazing work by TEAM EVO !
They really do great work :)
Been looking at this option for a while and been stuck on the fence. Going to wait for your part two, but already the craftsmanship and clean install have squashed any concerns. Great choice!
LOL - honestly, this is the suspension system we've been wanting on our JL since it became available. I think you'd LOVE it as much as we do.
those evo guys are awesome.. Man they do some quality work and once again another great video.
Any idea if there parts would work on a Australia Spec Rubicon haha.. I take delivery of the very first JL Rubicon from my dealership potentially next month and already looking at upgrades.. unfortunately everything is made for the left hand drive version so im not sure how much difference there is in everything =/
The long arms and coilovers should be the same. Where you'll run into issues is with steering components. I would contact EVO to verify what you'll need.
Soooo much want! Jet Li is turning in a beast!! Can’t wait for part 2. Keep up the fantastic work:)
He's getting there for sure and part 2 is in the works now :)
Might be just me, but the whole tear down time i'm like "OH THE HUMANITY!!!!"
LOL - there's definitely no going back now :)
NOOOOOOOOO! Not the cliffhanger......... Keeping me in suspense. Man! I need to know how it ends. LOL
LOL - working on it even as I type this. Hoping to have it done soon.
Looking good. I said it at the same time you did...stack of dimes.
Yes Those Welds
Here is the aswer to my question about when this would happen :-)
LOL - we've been wanting to do this since day 1 but had to go through the process or running different lifts. Needed the first hand experience.
Taking used part donations!!!😋😋
I did have a thought about the placement of the lower mounts on the front axle.. With the lower mounts being moved up to the centerline of the axle, nearly 100% of there rotational forces (wrap) are place on the upper arm and mounts. I know it have been tested and proven but I wonder how much sooner the uppers wear out from this design choice?
Good question
How many different lifts have you had in the JL ?
Hmmm, maybe about half a dozen
Great video, but as a mechanic though i’m a huge guy in using impact guns just snug down the bolts then torque them after… I don’t care if the job takes longer. If it was me i would not rush this job and get it done right to the tea. all these bolts have torque specs just sayin (even though he toured like 5 bolts lol)
Awesome work! Assuming the rear frame brackets must be bolted AND welded not just bolted?
You can get by with just bolting everything on but having them burned in is what I would recommend.
@@wayalife thanks. I currently have the rear high clearance on some take of D44s. Ordering this bracket soon. I’m just unsure if I’ll use this same setup for the front or go a different route. Welding “feels” too permanent if that makes sense.
@davidamarquez Trust me, nothing is ever too permanent, especially not welding.
Those brackets are a thing of beauty. Art in steel. Amazing.
Couldn't agree more :)
This is the explanation of perfection, good job 👍🏻
Awesome work for sure :)
Y'all can't leave us hangin like that, LMAO!! Wanna see those coil overs installed!
Project Napalm JL, RIGHT!! I was like, what, it’s over?? I need all the video 😂
LOL - sorry guys, we've been working hard to get these videos done since getting home. Hope to have part 2 up very soon :)
@@wayalife looking forward to it!!
I am very impressed with your explanation...how mutch is the price of the TJ coilover kit.sukses and continue to make useful vlog..😀👍👍👍
I'm not sure they make this kit for a TJ. For the JL, you're looking at about $9k plus labor.
Mann if I could press a ❤️ instead I would! I wish I had one of these..! I can't complain about my metalcloak game changer 3.5 with flacons 3.3s but coilovers and long arm is just a whole new level! I also wish we had a professional shop that good up here in Quebec! Love to follow all your adventures and hopefully I'll be able to drive down and meet you guys if you ever come near north eastern USA ;) Ain't the JLX coming this way in October!?!
Oh yeah, EVO coilovers are in a league of their own. They do come at a cost though. JLX should be heading out that direction in October.
Serious business, No way back! Have fun with the new set up 🇳🇱❤️🇺🇸✌️💪🔧💪💪💪💪
Would never want to go back :)
Do you think they could do the same on my jeep for free? I’ll be waiting for the reply 😅
Great video!!! Love the new long arms👍
Thank you and we're glad you enjoyed the video :)
I really enjoy watching your videos ! Your channel is my Favorite to watch. Saving up for my 1st Rubicon! I had a Jeep Wagoneer way back in the early 90s.
Thank you, we're so glad to hear it and hope you're able to get your Rubicon sooner than later! :)
Nothing like torching brackets off while wearing shorts...
Great video!! I'm considering the same coil over system you put in. I'm curious how the jl runs on the freeway with these modifications? I do a lot of wheeling but I also drive about 1000 miles a month on the freeway and am concerned about how it tracks and handles freeway speeds? What have you experienced? Thanks for all your videos.
On pavement, this setup rides WAY BETTER than the other lifts I've tested out.
Tommy, Rickey, Eddie. Great trio!
LOL :)
Awesome outstanding job thanks
What a great video!! The craftsmanship and the amount of work these guys did was amazing! Great job!! Can't wait to see the finished product!
Glad you enjoyed it and the finished product is coming soon :)
Holy crap them guys know their stuff and man they fast as hell.. where can i get one of their stickers from ? Love their logo will put on the back of my jeep window
LOL - they were crazy fast for sure. A lot of care in the quality of their work too. Call them up and I'll bet they can help you out.
And to think... our conversation back on the New Years run about going to coilovers made me think this day would never come. Lol. So cool guys. Can’t wait to see you guys in action
LOL - so glad that it finally happened.
Impressive job by Evo. Looking forward to the next video Eddie.
They always do impressive work and we we're working hard on the next video :)
The torch scene gets me. The line is in the way.
Chomping at the bit for the next video !
Sorry for keeping you waiting. Just have a lot of work getting in the way of things. Hoping to have it out by Monday.
Hi. I am wondering the JL/jk double thrown down system. What are the differences and pros and cons? By these two comparisons. Thank you~
To the best of my knowledge, there is no production DTD for the rear of a JL, only the front.
Wayalife >>> wow, that's a whole lotta labor going into the Jeep. I'm most impressed with the welding skills I'm seeing, incredible! ;-) ... too bad the new long arms aren't being attached to 8-lug full-floating axles; that would have been a very nice tie-it-all-together upgrade.
That would be a future mod once we're ready to roll on 40's :)
@@wayalife may your wishes come true soon! ;-)
Looked real sweet and great workmanship. I wonder if suitable for RHD? Steve
You would need to contact them about that but I'd be willing to bet they could help you out.
Those 2 guys did an amazing job. Can’t wait for the next episode.
Working on it now and hope to have it up soon.
Great video, that evo kit looks awesome. Looks like they did a lot of r&d to develop a very functional system. Waiting for the next episode to see the finished install and test drive, thanks.
No one I know has been developing and testing out coilover systems like this for the Wrangler longer than EVO. So glad you enjoyed the video :)
I also know you don't know how many days did it take to get this done
Damn that is a serious mod, all that welding! It was a pleasure to meet you at EJS Eddie! Unfortunately Elephant hill permits were full but hopefully next time I'm in Moab I can get out there!
Hey Matt, we met at the Jeep display right? It was a real pleasure to meet you as well and hope you're able to get out there in the near future :)
@@wayalife that was me! Moab is the best I'll definitely be out there again
Even tho we understand your friends with these guys could u help out with the range of price for a shop like to to install this system on our jeeps since that wasn’t covered. Thanks thanks. Also why didn’t you go with the double throw down for the front and back ?
You're looking at about $9k installed. At the time, there was no DTD for the JL and even now, there is only a setup for the front.
Oh and those welds... That welder is great at his craftsmanship!
Tommy is for sure one of the best :)
Eddy what's the best email for you?
I’ve just started watching it...just got the notice and clicked. You ain’t even driving yet, just opening the door and I’m stoked... 😂
Awesome - hope you enjoy it once you get a chance to watch it :)
Wayalife it was great until the cliffhanger ending. 😢😂
👏🔝🔝🇧🇷👍👍
I have to ask, and I apologize for being late to the party, but what is the touch up paint they use on the new brackets and frame ?
It's just chassis paint. You can get it at most any auto parts store.
Do they help pay for any of this with all the marketing your doing for them? I know I'm going evo after watching these videos! I'm just going to ship my jeep cross county or trailer it.
How many hours did the EVO crew take to complete Part 1 for this video?
About 2 days of solid work.
Also, “Jimmy, close the gate” “huh” “close the gate” “aww but I wanted to go to Naboo to get some coil overs “ “close the gate Jimmy, they’re filming “ “oh right “ [last gate closes]
Does the rear sway bar contact the coil over at full droop? My does. I’m wondering if the sway bar links were longer if that would resolve the situation. I have the same kit in a 2021 JLU.
Sounds like your lower control arms are set too long. Your axle is too far back.
@@wayalife thank you for the prompt reply
The more I see of EVO's work and engineering the more impressed I am. The US has such an abundance of top artisans.
The guys at EVO are definitely one of the best.
Do you think it's because Mel has actually been off roading and Rock crawling for many years and really understands the dynamics at hand?
Can't wait to see that jet flying on those rocks again:)
Soon as we get our wheel situation figured out, we'll try to get out and get some footage :)
Around 5:45 the comment about using a torch instead of a sawzall, why not use a plasma cutter? Next you need a hellcat or hellephant engine. It seems that EVO is really stepping up their builds. Great video. Great Jeep. Good luck. Thanks
Well, I suppose because they didn't have one handy. :)
What that coilover system that you linked in description does it come with the long arms?
If you look, you will see on their site that this kit is listed under "long arm" kits.
SWEET, SWEET, SWEET!!!
Badass
Do you install ANYTHING yourself?
You mean me? And get my hands dirty??
I'm looking for a shop and the Midwest that puts coilovers no
Where in the midwest?
There’s so much going on here, I have to watch it again!
A lot happened in a short amount of time for sure :)
Awesomeness in a video. Great word and tons of fun....
So glad you enjoyed it :)
What is the name of the wheel and tire package you have, digging those...
The wheels are KMC XD231's. We came in with Cooper STT Pros but left with Nitto Trail Grapplers
Can you run outboard clovers on the jk yet?
With custom work, anything is possible. The JL just makes it a lot easier to do.
Wow that was a ton of work done in a day! Wouldn’t probably find many over here in Hawaii that could do that.
Now that's some quick work.
These guys at EVO were super fast :)
They look like they’ve done that at least one other time - lol! Top notch install & fast, can’t wait to see them finish it up.
LOL - I think they could have done it blindfolded.
Wayalife It certainly appeared that way......calm & precise with no wasted effort or deliberation. Confidence inspiring! Like your driving!
Looking good guys!!! Sooooo Awesome!!! 👍🍻
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Now we’re talking 🤟
Been a long time coming :)
Eddie can I ask you lift kits put on your vehicle
I'm happy to answer whatever I can but I'm not really sure what you're asking.
If average joe saves up for 10 years to buy these king shocks and other components. What’s the install cost price time etc ?
The coilovers you see in this video are designed to be bolt on and you can do it yourself. The long arms are the costly part unless you can weld.
What about the front ?
Will this kit work on a RHD 2020 rubicon?
I don't know of any reason why it shouldn't.
Its about damn time 😂🇺🇸🤘
LOL - yes it is :)
dude was stacking dimes.
Tommy really is a great welder.
I knew it was just a matter of time.
LOL - you know us too well :)
NOT kidding
Seriously considering this for my 2019 JL. Do you guys recommend this build with the b-lock wheels as a daily driver ?
It is ours :)
Please be more transparent about who is paying for what. If you wrote a check at full retail to your buddy who owns EVO..... cool. If you didn’t, that is fine too, no hate, I really respect EVO and their products in either case. I just want to know when I’m watching someone on RUclips who has a relationship with a shop, and potentially manufacturers of products like King Coilovers, that you are transparent that this is a sponsored video and product placements. No hating here, I love your content and the massive effort you put into making it, it’s TV quality with great trails and adventures. Your skills at content creation are above reproach, I’m just looking for the real versus the paid, and knowing when the paid is happening. The JL is going to be a beast when this is done and I’ve been a loyal viewer for over 8yrs and I live in the greater Sacto area between 80 and 50, close to the Rubicon and Fordyce, great trails in this area.
I apologize if we've ever been anything but transparent. Some products like our drive shafts or Rough Country track bar, we definitely paid for out of our own pocket and I do believe I've stated as much. Some products are made by friends of ours like Rancho or Synergy and I do believe I've always stated that they are given to us. Some products are made by close personal friends like Dyantrac and EVO and we definitely get help from them. If you've really been watching our channel for as long as you have, you should know that I clearly state in videos like the one we made for the ProRock 44 we got that Jim hooked us up. Mel always helps us out as well but limited to the products that he makes. As in, he doesn't make King coilovers, KMC wheels or Nitto tires. What I'm trying to say is that we are not sponsored but we are fortunate to have friends in the industry who are willing to help us out. But, for all intents and purposes, you're more than welcome to believe that everything we get is given to us. Our videos speak for themselves and we always show EVERYTHING that happens to us, good or bad.
Eddy while your there with Mel, ask him if he's team can put one of those EVO High Clearance Long Arms suspensions on my Honda accord:)
LOL - too funny :)
Very cool! Man... some bigger axles would have been nice. You probably saw Lite Brite just busted theirs? Mel gave me a ride in his. Couldn't swing it at the time.😢 congratulations on the upgrade. OlllllllO
LOL Same name same addiction
Those MIG welds are beautiful !
Shoutout to that guy !!!
I can weld but mine never look like a stack of dimes. Stack of pancakes maybe, or maybe a pile of sandbags.
Truly beautiful welds.
Wayalife what an honor to get a reply from you !!! Thx for all the great content.
wow I want to bring mine in.
These are the guys to do the work for sure!
Plasma cutter much nicer cuts less grinding.
True but ya gotta work with what you've got.
Nice!! Man I wish!
It ain't cheap but it is the good stuff!
