My son chose the CHR premium over the other cars he tested, and is very happy with it. He commutes to college (46 miles each way), and it suits him just fine.
Ron, yikes. My parents took delivery of the competing HR-V, and like this C-HR, they're both miserable, poorly constructed, over-designed excuses for vehicles. Like the HR-V, these things are incredibly flimsy, built around cost-cuttings measures at every possible step, and they're polarizing as sin. Like the HR-V, it's a good vehicle, at the core, but not one worth buying in any capacity. I hope, for his sake, he experiences other vehicles soon, otherwise he'll be stuck with another modern-day disappointment. I'm sure it's vehicles like these that drive the statistic of my generation not wanting to own cars and drive them up.
Well, I dont know if I agree with you on this. It seems as well built as any other vehicle today, and it actually drives very nicely. The HR-V was one of the ones he compared it to. He also drove the Corolla S, Mazda CX-3, Mazda 3, Miata (which he almost went for, but rejected on low practicality), Hyundai Elantra Sport, Kia Forte, Subaru Impreza, and a few others I forget. Of all of them, he liked the C-HR the best. I'm sure it will serve him well for his college years.
This reminds me of a revised version of 2nd gen Scion XB. I must say, I really like the uniqueness of this car. It has a modern but futuristic look, but also is very simple on the inside. I may consider this car for my next purchase.
I was cross shopping this with a Corolla SE one year older. The advantage of the CHR was that the adaptive cruise was full speed and the corollas is not. I ended up getting the Corolla instead, I liked the softex seats on the Corolla and the interior felt much more premium.
Awesome Video Presentation as usual. You mentioned Blind Spot Monitoring is standard on the XLE, but it isn't standard. It's standard on the XLE Premium Trim. Keep up the good work.
I have been driving this car for over 8000 miles, and I love the driving experience. Driving this car is just pure pleasure and has the Toyota reliability. What I really don't like about this car that makes me to think about changing it for another car, is the gas mileage. Gas mileage is not very good (26/30 in echo mode)
My neighbor has this car in Philly PA and gets compliments almost everywhere he goes. Its styling is futuristic and unique in person. The naysayers on here must be broke or been rejected
Notification squad! I am a huge fan of you and your detailed and awesome reviews Alex! Edit: I'd call this vehicle a Sports Utility Hatch, if that makes sense...
In my opinion, if an SUV is built on a unibody chassis, then it's a crossover. And if an SUV is built on a body on frame chassis, then it's a true SUV. Also, because a crossover is supposed to be an SUV built on a car or unibody chassis, I dont think a "crossover" is truly a crossover if it doesnt have available AWD or 4WD. For the C-HR's case, it's really hard to say what it is because AWD is available in other world markets but not in the US which I think is stupid considering this vehicle is supposedly a crossover.
That's one way to look at it, but Jeep and Dodge would disagree since they consider the Grand Cherokee and Durango SUVs. Land Rover would also argue since essentially their entire Land Rover and Range Rover lineup is unibody.
Alex on Autos I see what you're saying but I still think FCA and even Land Rover are wrong because it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me if they're SUVs are full on SUVs if they are built on a car or unibody chassis, like a CRV or something like that. That, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango are based on a Mercedes car chassis which makes them crossovers because once again, a crossover is an SUV built on a car or unibody chassis.
Many don't care when they are driving. How many folks sit and wonder hmm am I driving a crossover, SUV, or hatchback. The main reason for these are height for easy entry and exit and space. Otherwise big deal concerning designation. I referring to the cuvs.
As a Kia Soul owner, I think it's funny that the Soul is identified as a hatchback, wagon, and now a crossover by Kia marketing! In Asia, it's an MPV, so it's a "mini-van" by our earlier standards. JD Powers calls it an MPV. Since you own a Soul EV, what would you call it?
IMO, whether or not the C-HR is a crossover has nothing to do with the drive wheels. It is a body shape like a sedan, hatchback, wagon etc. None of those body shapes dictate the drive wheels as you can get a front, rear or all wheel drive in most if not all body shapes. So, drive wheels are irrelevant in dictating body shape. I think the correct question should be; what exactly defines body shapes? Many manufacturers seem to want to develop their own unique body shape to differentiate themselves from their competition and eliminate or minimize direct comparisons. So, I think by setting an industry standard definition for body shape. It would eliminate the need for this question and put these ambiguous body shapes that manufacturers fabricate into one category, whether their marketing departments like it or not. Maybe there already is a system I am not aware of and the press needs to adopt it?
Yeah, that rear door handle placement. I had that on my 2008 Jeep Compass and my son has it on his 2012 Chevy Sonic so it’s not a new feature on vehicles.
i was so excited the first time i saw it on youtube.....but when i saw it in person it looks too small.....that that attractive to me...just like a civic
A beautiful review of the C-HR! We actually bought one for our daughter for college. I know that this might be a stretch or a challenge to somehow get the car, but I would like to request a review for the new BMW 6 series Gran Turismo. My wife prefers the GT but I am leaning towards the E-Class wagon. I do think the GT handles better, but I would like your two cents. - Carson Tollner
I really don't see a lot of buzz for this C-HR. My two biggest issues are it's spartan storage and the loud road noise. I'm looking more towards the Corolla iM or Kia Soul..yes, they may not solve the storage and noise problems but I can get used ones for 10K less!
I think Kia Soul is the same category with CH-R. Soul ! trim has bigger cargo capacity and faster 0-60 mile acceleration, plus more powerful (201hp, 195 torque).
Why buy a crossover if you're not going to get AWD? If you go FWD, than you're better off just getting a hatchback car or a wagon. Crossover is just a nice way of saying a car on stilts. Without AWD, they offer no additional utility than the cars they're based on (assuming the car is offered as a hatch).
David Malinovsky fair enough, except many of the small crossovers don't even have a high seating position. At best, they're marginally higher than the cars they're based on. You really have to move up to the compact crossover segment to get an appreciably higher seating position, and even some of them are questionable in terms of how high the driver's seat sits.
My aunt owns this car. It REALLY is fun to drive. I wish I owned it. Edit: Oh yeah, the dealer also threw in navigation for free. Gotta bargain with the seller, folks.
A 'crossover' to me is just a large hatchback, nothing at all to do with being offroad capable. Available AWD is for those whose geographic conditions warrant it.
The Australian spec is completely different, 1.2L Turbo, integrated nav, with options for AWD and leather. The C-HR I reviewed was actually pretty nice, the higher spec makes it so much better. It is hard to understand why Toyota have reduced the spec so dramatically in the US, it really makes it uncompetitive with the Honda and Mazda.
RPM Car Reviews The US regulations are more restrictive than most European and Asian countries. That’s one reason why you can get certain features and options in those countries that you can’t get here in the US.
If I remember another car from Gran Turismo PSP, Toyota had an concept car called the Toyota RSC and if that what the C-HR grew from, that's very shy of you Toyota.
I feel like for that price Toyota should throw in the LED head and tail lights that other Markets such as Asian, European markets have. Not stick with halogen/traditional bulbs
As Alex let sneak in the choice for this space really includes the Niro. With the partial tax credit of $3500 for PHEV when it gets here these cars won't be in the same century.
Is a Ford Fusion AWD a crossover? Is a body-on-frame full-size sedan like the old Ford Crown Victoria a truck or SUV? Let's take it further. All pre-1960s cars were body-on-frame construction, not unibody, so what does that make them?
Imo, if a vehicle like this is fwd only it is a raised hatchback. If it is all wheel DRIVE it can claim, or at least strive, to be a CUV. As well, and this is only my opinion, but i dislike toyota's forcing their insync system down the buyer's throat when most folk want the flexibility of android auto or apple car play. It toyota wants to sell cars then give the customer what he wants
S G What you said, ‘If Toyota wants to sell cars then give the customer what he wants.’ You can say the same thing about every automobile manufacturer. It’s always, ‘Oh, if you want this option then you have to remove this option.’ Or, ‘Sorry, sir, that $200 option is only available with this package that costs $3,000 extra.’ I see that all the time when I go online to the manufacturers websites.
Hi Alex, love your reviews. Could you please do a review on the 2016/17/18 Toyota land Cruiser. Thinking of getting one when I migrate to America. If you can't do a review, what are your thoughts on the LC? Thanks in advance.
I think with the two other power trains it would be more successful. Or just the 4x4 or prius power train . We got the worst option ,no power , no fuel economy, and no 4x4.
own a 2019 c-hr gle. it is the most utterly piece of crap. after 2 years of ownership and 40k miles it makes me wish i had bought a yugo! spacious: somewhat good mileage?? not in the least. my 1990 suzuki samurai gave 45/50 miles to the gallon. battery is out in less than 2 years, so were the tires which lasted about 38k miles. noises from low workmanship. it has them all. currently, in slow turns, the steering system cracks, rattles and moans constantly. and then there is the ever bubbling sound after it gets warmed up. what did the dealership service department say all and every time i took the car for inspection? they said that there was nothing wrong with the car. a yugo's the way to go. suspension. it bottoms up every time with the slighest depression on the road. the front absorbers (struts or rubber bands or whatever they use to deal with this) is so horrendous and the japanese mechanic at the dealership says there is nothing wrong with the suspension. a yugo is the way to go! i am telling you guys and gals, save yourselves the aggravation of a great looking piece of crap and buy yourselves a yugo!! the 80's and 90's yugo that is!
Don't think a majority of drivers even know what wheel is driving their car. So FWD, RWD, AWD, 4WD, doesn't matter. It's how the car looks is what ppl categorize a car. Like is a bmw F36 really a coupe? Ha!
Subaru Crosstrek is more spacious, has a bigger engine, has a better (more capable) drivetrain, has better outward visibility, AND has better MPG. I just don't get this Toyota.
Crosstrek has bigger engine? Are you sure? It's also not any faster because of the CVT and power consuming AWD system. Crosstrek is also incredibly bland, looks and feels outdated, like it was designed 10 years ago. Let's be honest, people are buying C-HR because of its looks and love it or hate it - it sells like hot cakes.
the new 2018 isnt bland, imo, but thats totally subjective. It actually feels quite premium on the inside when compared to other cars in the segment. it is now a much quieter, more refined car. it offers lots of room (front and back), best in class AWD system, great suspension, and good fuel economy + the highest in class, almost 9" of ground clearance. while it is on the slow side, it still feels faster than the HRV which I compared it to.
I'm gonna have to give the reviewer a A+ for his continued excellent reviews. However this particular car? At best..a D- for simply being butt ugly! BTW...Still want to see Alex's full review of the 2018 Toyota Highlander!
So this is what I saw in my parking lot today! I did think it was a scion but then saw the toyota logo! The one I saw was a all blue model, not like that awful look of that teal/white color! Not very attractive to me but I'm older than the targeted market! Hey! no all wheel drive? So it's a city/urban car huh! Honestly, I think Toyota is marketing this particular car to the female market.
I, CH R is 5 months old . I, had a remote start put on . and the signals no longer work . It's been at the dealership the last month-Please , do not put a remote start on this CHR.
Teresa Whitehurst My wife has a 2018 and she doesn’t even have 5000 miles on it yet (as of Feb. 2020) and she had it in two months ago because the factory installed remote start stopped working.
Really poor MPG for the performance it gives you. Get a Mazda3 hatch 2.5L gives 184hp, similar mpg if not better, leather heated seats, blind spot monitoring, BOSE sound, and looks better too for about $3K more.
One of the most informative reviews on the Ch-r I've seen.. excellent job!
I love how matter of fact Alex is. His reviews are great and pack in a ton of information.
Excellent! By far the best auto reviewer on RUclips or probably anywhere else. Information you can really use. Thanks very much!

should've drove the new Subaru Crosstrek. its great, imo
Smart kid
He is certainly smart. He is studying condensed matter physics, and just eats it up. Will go on to graduate school.

this channel just gets lots of haters viewing it nowadays. lmao
I have it in silver and it's a premeium .
Layup Films or from the midwest
char ove how does she drive?
That's interesting. I am from PA, and no dealers in my area carry the CHR, due to no AWD. In fact, all dealers in my area have all SUVs with A/4WD.
Good job on another great, detailed video!
I love how they kept the separate dashboard clock. This is so 90's.
Notification squad! I am a huge fan of you and your detailed and awesome reviews Alex!
Edit: I'd call this vehicle a Sports Utility Hatch, if that makes sense...
Excellent analysis on a segment of vehicle that is so hard to pin down.
this guy can talk more than my wife AND sister in law and that is some world class chatter-boxing, let me tell you
In my opinion, if an SUV is built on a unibody chassis, then it's a crossover. And if an SUV is built on a body on frame chassis, then it's a true SUV. The rear blind spot looks brutal.
Currently watching your videos. Many thanks for doing this, great detail!
Alex...Would have loved it, if they had it in AWD...Quite good and sporty looking
Alex’s which do you like better..the Rav-4 or the CHR. and what did you think of the CVT transmission?
love this guy! my fav car review page.
5:00 in, and I think Spider-Man might be stalking you.
LOL, I thought it was a balloon.
Pikminiman that and he might be Dr Octopus
its deadpool
Pikminiman never drive by in ugliest vehicle in strange Forrest alone 😂😂😂😂😂😂
It is deadpool actually watch the evidence in my channel
This needs the new 2.5 Litre D4S that the Camry has, and the proper 8-Speed Automatic.
Then, it might actually be driveable.
It looks really good. LOVE the side profile
Nice paint color choice and i like the white roof.

Toyota only offer the lowest basic model in the U.S. EU and Far East premium models have leather seats turbocharged engine and AWD option.
Turbocharged engine which is slower than 2.0 one available in the US.
I'm used to the more busy designs from the Japanese but this reaches new (low) heights. Must be designed for the youngins.
I didn't know this was intended to be a Scion! That would explain the stylistic choices.
You lost me on the pornography bit, alex. Lol
Alex is the kind of guy to actually put a half gallon of milk in the arm rest.
Its like toyota took parts out of all the vehicles in thier lineup (past and present), glued them together and came up with his monstrosity.
I think Kia Soul is the same category with CH-R. Soul ! trim has bigger cargo capacity and faster 0-60 mile acceleration, plus more powerful (201hp, 195 torque).

totally agree. although certain models do have that extra bit of ground clearance which comes in handy on snowy roads
Correction, the Yaris I A is another Toyota that comes very well equipped with few options.
Compact Hybrid Revolutionary is what C-HR stands for...
I love the chr. Hopefully getting one this month 🙏 hehe
Did u get it?
My aunt owns this car. It REALLY is fun to drive. I wish I owned it.

I'm sold at the scion part but then no awd? Darn
I typically dont like unusual colors but i think that there looks pretty good. Dunno about the white roof but im kinda digging the whole design

Really like the look of the car...
I wait always to hear reviewers talk about the front seats. Those headrests look super uncomfortable.
Definitely a boutique car. I would buy a soul, Cx3 or a base countryman.
You mean like getting a haircut and manicure it it?
Could a competitor to the Mini Cooper, or Mini Clubman too.
15:15
Impressive ride/handling balance. Few crossovers can match that
Can you do an explanation video of MINI's ALL4 all wheel drive system?
If I remember another car from Gran Turismo PSP, Toyota had an concept car called the Toyota RSC and if that what the C-HR grew from, that's very shy of you Toyota.
I feel like for that price Toyota should throw in the LED head and tail lights that other Markets such as Asian, European markets have. Not stick with halogen/traditional bulbs

Alex, I'm expecting the 2018 Lexus LS500 review. Hope you have the review as soon as the car is released.
Is a Ford Fusion AWD a crossover? Is a body-on-frame full-size sedan like the old Ford Crown Victoria a truck or SUV? Let's take it further. All pre-1960s cars were body-on-frame construction, not unibody, so what does that make them?
Wouldn't the Rogue Sport be a direct competitor too?
wwilliamson89 ya, was hoping to see that in the comparison...
Come for the car reviews, stay for the Justice Potter Stewart quotes.
Could this be this generation's Pontiac Aztek?
4 wheel or all wheel drive should be available in ALL vehicles in North America. Especially in Canada.
It misses two things: 2.4l engine from new Camry and full LED headlamps (offered in Europe or Asia).
Thanks Thanks very informative video
Why do Europeans models of this same vehicle offer so many more options? America we are being ripped off yet again!
I love Toyota chr .
Isn't the 50 mpg Kia Niro a hybrid?
Imo, if a vehicle like this is fwd only it is a raised hatchback. If it is all wheel DRIVE it can claim, or at least strive, to be a CUV. Why are these colors not available in Europe?!
C pillar from hell. The blind spots must be atrocious.
Thats why it's equipped with safety features.
@3:30 Looks like you ran off the road and crashed it into a ditch because it doesn’t have AWD!!! LOL!😆
Hi Alex, love your reviews. Could you please do a review on the 2016/17/18 Toyota land Cruiser. Thinking of getting one when I migrate to America. If you can't do a review, what are your thoughts on the LC? Thanks in advance.
ClarkeSLR An all-new Land Cruiser is set to reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September 12th. Stay tuned.
Thank you sir
No problem.
@5:03.... is It in the woods?! Lol
I have been getting 35 mpg in town and 37 mpg on the highway.
Is this based on the Corolla IM or is it the new Toyota modular architecture?
TNGA
It is a mpv(multipurpose vehicle like the honda civic sport hwtch and crosstour.
Surprised how heavy it is for it's size
The Fiat 500L is even smaller and just as heavy.
Alex are tou going to review the 2018 traverse???
Its bad when their radio system is so bad, they expect you to replace it
Quick question: Who is the best reviewer, and why is it you?
Say what you want, this shit is damn cool!
It would be better if they sell it awd with turbo in the USA it would sell quick

Toyota designers have fallen in love with UGLY. Don't ask me why.
Christopher Calder if you think this car is ugly I would hate to see what your car looks like
4 cylinder and barely gets 30 mpg highway......not good!!
Notification squad never late
needs 205hp and 45mpg and seats that fold absolutely flat so i can sleep in it while travelling across North America.
0:28 are you like 5"2 or something this car looks giant!
I just don't get this Toyota.
and don't forget the amazing new infotainment on the Crosstrek as well as the safety tech.
Crosstrek has bigger engine? Are you sure? It's also not any faster because of the CVT and power consuming AWD system. Crosstrek is also incredibly bland, looks and feels outdated, like it was designed 10 years ago. @greg chuchelo
Subaru's famous "Symmetrical AWD" is really limited in base models. Definitely not the best in class.
oh, so which small crossover has a better AWD system? as far as I know, they're all on demand and nowhere near as capable.
Lady gaga 🤣🤣🤣i like this guys reviews subscribed.
No nav and no Android Auto or Apple Carplay is a deal breaker.
This was a scary movie. Did he survive?
Really poor MPG for the performance it gives you. Get a Mazda3 hatch 2.5L gives 184hp, similar mpg if not better, leather heated seats, blind spot monitoring, BOSE sound, and looks better too for about $3K more.
