I did too and honestly I think their opinion was way off.. I love my C-HR and so does anyone I show it to. Its the perfect size for fitting into small spaces and its very roomy in the front but the backs not that bad, yes it has blind spots but it doesnt bother me with the nice back up camera btw much better infortainment and quality then the honda and way roomier over a civic or corolla, that tall ugly kid doesnt know what hes talking about, he drives a old outdated Raptor.
The Toyota looks better and drives better to me, but I compared these two and bought the Honda. It was the Honda's all-wheel-drive, utility with "Magic-Seats", 20 more sq. ft. of cargo storage, driver's view, and strong reliability and resale value, that helped me make my choice.
I have had my 2019 C-HR for 3 months, and I love it. I understand the points you make here, but my car is really fun to drive. Acceleration is slow, but I haven't had a problem merging. It has amazing safety features. It may not be for everyone, but I have been really happy with it.
Yeah, We got a HRV as well. It's practical and peppy around town but cruise nicely on the HWY and returns 28-29 MPG now it winter month and 30-32 in summer. Small yet lots of rooms for our needs. Love the CRV and better performance but it's getting too big for us.
Ive got an HRV as well, same color as the test car, I got the base model because I hated the touchscreen crap with the radio and climate controls. Some features I wish I had, but it wasnt worth the extra money. My wifes got a Fit and she would take the HRV all day every day. But shes getting a Civic when her lease is up.
Lol u guys got the literally shitty version of the Honda the one I have and sold in my country is hella more powerful and it has a electric hybrid dct transmission version.
I like this new format. Very unique among reviews. The cars you have done this with are likely to be compared by a buyer that has narrowed their list down.
I was interested in the HRV CHR and Juke all because they had similar styles. Ended up with the Honda HRV base model which still has a decent amount of features for being base model and fits my budget. Love it!
Came here to say this... so good. TheStraightPipes is all about the chemistry between the hosts - like the Clarkson crew, Chemistry is hard to build and much hard to maintain but so worth it from an entertainment side. That and VFX... and the visor test of course.
Also, I love your box test. Now whenever I look at new cars, I think "but I wonder how many boxes it would fit." It's such a better measurement than cubic feet which tells me nothing. Keep up the good work! P.S. your Element review made me wish I kind of had one just for weekend cycling and paddleboarding trips.
Too bad. You should have try one before making judgement. We own an HR-V and it run quite, save fuel and cruse nicely on the highway. Honda CVT is good unlike Nissan CVT. you set that in cruise and when going uphill the CUV just pull into the power band and hold it there and leave other cars/trucks behind while their traditional vehicle is trying to shift in and out of gear which cause more wears and tears on the engine....gear hunting, I guess.
Tous Shong will you never convince anyone that a CVT is good. One CVT may be better than another, but they’re all garbage compared to geared automatics.
Lol the buyers of this vehicle segment don’t care about transmission, come on dude. I hate CVT, way too rubber-band like, even the Honda one. Experienced it on a 2014 and 2016 Civic. Nope, I’ll take a geared automatic.
I've used my HRV's magic seats about three times in a year. I've folded forwards the back seats about fifteen times. The smug satisfaction alone compared to the price of a Honda Civic was worth it.
this C-HR is like from 2016 it's not at all like what they sell here in France, except of the style indeed, the climat control.. idk about the Honda tho but if they picked as poorly as the toyota.. i guess it's fair also i chose this car cause it is hybrid it's 5L/100km average, the sport mode is great imo ..so this review makes no sense anymore to me it's a different car really
harrismi7 I work at a Honda dealership and I’ve driven the HR-V and they aren’t AWFUL I would never buy one personally. But they’re just kinda bleh. They have a HR-V sport and that’s all you would really need. I prefer the Nissan Juke that I drive.
I went from one extreme to the other... Mazda Miata to HR-V and I don't regret my choice at all... You guys forgot to mention though that you can at least get the HR-V with a manual in LX or EX trim! Otherwise good review and I pretty much agree with everything you guys said.
We actually wanted a smaller SUV but got the CRV after looking at the HRV and Crosstrek with AWD. Their pricing with awd and active safety was almost as expensive as the CRV-EX AWD, which is way bigger, luxurious, and faster...
what sad from the chip shortage I only found dealerships with the 2018 version. I got lucky to get the XLE version of 2019 this year for 26k. The 2020-2021 version are sold out or out of stock.
Both cars fixed a lot of the complaints with the 2019 models. Example: Toyota now offers leather, Apple CarPlay, more safety features, and the backup camera is now seen through the infotainment screen, not the rearview mirror.
Thanks for the review but this is what I think they need to improve : Honda HR-V: Release a design refresh to fit to the other Honda line-up Add Android Auto and Apple Carplay Add Volume knob (like the Accord) Add more physical button instead of touch Improve cabin noise Toyota CH-R: Add AWD for sure Improve Better visibility in second row (need redesign I think) Add Android Auto and Apple Carplay integration change the "aftermarket" infotainment system Delete back up camera from mirror et move it to the infotainment system Improve cabin noise There's maybe more but I prefer the Honda because of the versatility of the back seat that remind me the Honda Fit and the All Wheel Drive.
Am very glad we get a “proper” C-HR here in Europe. Have test driven one with the hybrid power train. Can see why someone would like to have it as a city car. The EU version also has more tech, like full LED headlights, a regular reversing camera, the traditional Toyota Navigation (which quite honestly isn’t much of a win, but at least doesn’t have that ugly plastic bezel), decent JBL speakers, etc. Only things I would want are: Android Auto / Apple CarPlay; slightly more powerful electric motor; better sound insulation.
My mom has a CHR. The blind spot seemed like a minor inconvenience, but during daily driving, it is a PAIN to live with. And also, the AMMOUNT OF BODY ROLL is unreal.
I have the Honda HR-V. I wanted the Toyota CHR at first. I didn’t get it because it costed more then the HR-V but tbh, I don’t like both anymore after I saw this video and I should have gotten the Honda Civic. Oh well.🤷♀️ I should have seen this video first than buying the car that I have now🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
In Malaysia the top line of the HRV comes with led day lights build in the headlamp and has 2 projector lamps on each side. No sunroof no 4wd just fwd. Leather seats on the sides but common materials at the middle of each front seats. I do agree the ac touch screen is a bother when you accidentally touch the panels but we have cruise control at the steering wheel. The biggest perks are ample space at the rear.
In Europe the CHR has an optional hybrid power plant. But overall way too expensive compared to other "Compact" (which is midsized for EU) SUV's. Yes Toyota are ridiculously expensive where I live. A GT86 costs around 33K Euro's, which is over 40KUSD at the current exchange rate. the BRZ is about the same. And then they wonder why the car does not sell well... .

HRV if I had to choose. And yes it does have Apple CarPlay and Android auto, not sure why you guys couldn’t get it to work. Anyway, another good review, keep up the work!

Funny enough, I have access to both these cars at work and I agree with everything that was said by you guys! If forced, I would pick the HRV because it does feel a bit roomier than the CHR. Great reviews fellas, keep up the good work!
I bought an HR-V for my wife because it was a great value for an AWD crossover. It actually has a surprising amount of room for back seat passengers and luggage- much more than it looks like it would have. Going this route I was able to get more options for the same price of a base Escape or CX-5. The CX-3 is tiny in the rear seat and this Toyota wasn't out yet at the time but isn't AWD anyway. The HR-V also looks way better in black mostly because the grill is more integrated that way. We got it when they first came out and it has been trouble free for 45,000 miles. It is slow, but you only notice it when you hammer it which isn't what it was made for anyway. in easy city driving the engine and cvt are well tuned to one another and it works fine. Its not the kind of car that gets you super excited but I'm glad I bought it.
Even the slow cars in North America are faster than many from the early 80's. I had a 1980 Ford Fiesta with all of 66 hp and loved the car, even though it was slow it felt sporty. To me it is more important how the car drives and comfort, especially seat comfort. It seem many new affordable cars are cutting cost in the seats which are just comfortable enough for a 15 minute test drive, and the first time you spend an hour in it you regret it.
Ok I purchased a Toyota CHR 2020 last week 20Sept20 because it was stylish and being a Toyota dependable. You to seem spot on half way thru video. I’ll come back after a winter in Buffalo NY 2020-2021👍🏽
Love your content guys. Love the energy. Greay job on every video! Can i make a request. Can you guys test the Honda Accord 2.0 Sport Manual (with the Type R de-tuned engine). Maybe even compare it to the type r haha. Would love to hear your thoughts.
My mom have a CH-R Hybrid here in Norway and it have just 122 HP, but it is actually quite "fast" because of the electric motor. In any case, it feels faster than the non-hybrid version tested in this video.
I’ve driven one (i’m also from norway lol) and it’s pretty zippy and quick around town, but you can’t overtake anyone at high speed to save your life. It sucks when it’s running on the gas engine alone.
I would pick the all-new Hyundai Kona. It has everything available that you are missing in these two vehicles, including available Android Auto, Apple Car Play and Head Up Display. It is also available in FWD or AWD and an available 1.6T and a very competitive price. Worth looking at.
Chase Short not much of an insult anymore man. Better warranty, better features. As of recent much much better power and dynamics. And the styling is very aggressive compared to its direct competition. Except the sonata. Not to mention they offer a 200k mile 20year warranty with a 120k 12 year bumper to bumper for 2-3k more.and always undercuts competitors pricing. It's just a smarter purchase.
I love my HR-V LX! The economy button nearly has me at 35 mpg and it’s very zippy and fast when I need it to be on freeway. It’s not a fun stop and go point a to point b car but if you have to commute at all it’s actually a dream and it’s cute and sleek.
Rant time: The coolness of the exterior design of the CHR is such a huge waste by filling it with a boring loaf of dry bread of a car. I remember playing Gran Turismo and that was a prototype rally car that was super fast. This thing BEGS to come in a quick 200hp+ AWD with a 6 speed manual. If they sold it as such I would Give my left nut and most of my soul to own one. Instead they’re just going to say nobody wanted it and never bring it back again. Fill it with the moxy that brilliant exterior design deserves! When this came out I was really hoping this was going to be the sporty winter defeater car we need in Canada. Such a letdown. But great job on the video as usual.
Great review -- you guys bring up everything that could be important to a shopper. 0 to 60 numbers aren't important for every car, especially in this class, LOL. Just by watching I like the looks of the Toyota, but not really sure which I would prefer without actually getting into and driving them.
You guys keep dropping bangers!! Both companies absolutely dropped the ball on these two cars.. and that's too bad because it is such an important segment... They are obviously banking on their name/reputation to sell these....
I don't think they are banking on their name, they are def banking on how popular this segment is. The Honda fit can do everything these cars can and more with better quality overall, except the ride height
sean wilson. SUVs are not preferred by anyone who likes cars. They are a pain to drive, have lousy engines and look awful. SUVs are not for active driving but rolling around.
visually i like the toyota, but price ,practicality, options like awd etc makes me lean far more towards the Honda but with out leather , ill stick with my more powerful easier to see out the back and practical almost 20 year old CRV :) megabyte from reboot :D just not that horrible new reboot which is less reboot but shut off fantastic video :)
Man I love my 1999 CR-V manual :) I am finally shopping for a replacement, but I'm headed more in the wagon/hatchback direction for driving fun, rather than another SUV.
I went from a 2016 V6 Highlander to a 2018 CHR. Gas was killing me in the Highlander, so CHR FTW! Eco mode rocks 🎸 I just need a commuter car for work. I would rarely take it on the road for out of town trips.
Loved the special surprise at the end! 14:36 Never noticed the C-HR having that array animated turn signal. Shame both cars kinda cheap out on the infotainment. The C-HR is such an attractive bold design, its too bad mechanically under the hood in NA is lacking, wish they had brought over the hybrid versions that are available in Europe and Asia. Also you guys didn't really mention it feels like your in a prison in the back seat of the C-HR with how the C-Pillars are designed and how little light gets back there.
I wouldn't have either of them. The toyota does look better but those c pillars are ridiculous! great review again boys. Tuesdays and Thursdays are good days
I just purchased a 2021 Honda HRV, I purchased it because I know that 1.8 engine will go a half 1,000,000 miles if you take care of the car. I only wanted to get from point a to point B with a little bit of comfort, which the HRV offers. I tested both, and the HRV is just way better than the Toyota.
Wow, Pretty early, I think i would go with the Honda for design. I just think that the Toyota has too much going on and looks a bit weird. I like more simple designs when it comes to design.
When you want AWD, and want something small, don't want an old used Rav or Samurai. Especially here in the BC interior. CHR isn't AWD. Both Fits and HRVs are massively popular here (HRV is basically a fit)
I have a 2018 CHR with a light blue body and a white roof. I really like it. I’ve been driving it since the end of April. I’ve gotten complements on this car. I don’t know but I love this car
O wauw guys, this is buy far the best car comparison video I have ever watched. Regardless of the cars themselves, you are both so clear in speech and the way you kind of compete but still have fun is so relaxed to listen and watch. Thank you for this video. I'll pick the one that vits my budget best in this case, which will probably be the CHR, I can live with the little "off" aspects consider I only need the car for simple city driving and it's just me and my 7jr old little prince that need to drive in it. Again thank you so much for helping to make my choice way easier cause I don't need to spen any extra time at the dealer checking out these details.
I like it better when Yuri and Jakub review hot hatches. 😏 That said.....again I've been entertained with a review about two vehicles I'd never give a second glance, yet today I watched the whole video and even laughed out loud a couple times. Good times.
I bought CHR not for racing but to get to work and home and be comfortable. And i love it.
Yeah, dont know why most reviewers think ppl buy cars for racing.
Boot is tiny
The Toyota looks better and drives better to me, but I compared these two and bought the Honda. It was the Honda's all-wheel-drive, utility with "Magic-Seats", 20 more sq. ft. of cargo storage, driver's view, and strong reliability and resale value, that helped me make my choice.
Awd… 🤡🤡🤡
I'm not even interested in either of these cars. I just clicked because StraightPipes!
Eli Yang me too lol
they look less excited either, compared to their other videos.
Me neither even though I’m mostly a big SUV/ truck guy.
Don't we all?
I have had my 2019 C-HR for 3 months, and I love it. I understand the points you make here, but my car is really fun to drive. Acceleration is slow, but I haven't had a problem merging. It has amazing safety features. It may not be for everyone, but I have been really happy with it.
Kathryn Kleinman idk you could’ve got a CX-5 for the same price for a much better car with a much better engine and a regular transmission lol
I love how you guys review cars that are for regular people. This is awesome content 👍🏿
Don't worry, lots of cars for "not regular people" coming soon too
You know.. I think tgeres soneone else out there that does regular car reviews.....
@@TheStraightPipes there’s one thing I hate about the C-HR. The steering wheel

Yuri Tereshyn maybe Miata and fiat spider?
Josue Resendiz I’m down. I pick spider abarth. Drive both back to back. Loved the looks on the spider more.
I was interested in the HRV CHR and Juke all because they had similar styles. Ended up with the Honda HRV base model which still has a decent amount of features for being base model and fits my budget. Love it!
Same! I love it!
Masterful outro, 10/10. So entertained by a review of two cars I would never buy, by two guys who don't even like them. This is why I come up here.
Came here to say this... so good. TheStraightPipes is all about the chemistry between the hosts - like the Clarkson crew, Chemistry is hard to build and much hard to maintain but so worth it from an entertainment side. That and VFX... and the visor test of course.
Lol u right I got the new HR -v with all yhe exterior accessories looks awesome
I just got the Honda. My son talked me into it instead of the rav4? 😐 oops no I took it back and got the rav4. It’s so nice I love it.
@@speteydog2260 that’s surprising

A lady just tried to win a Honda HRV on The Price is Right. She didn't win it, but after watching this review did she really lose?
harrismi7 She could trade/sell it afterward ;)
You always lose when something of value is given to you for free :)
But then again you were just joking haha
Its a frikin free car, hell yeah its a lost.
I'm guessing you have an extra HRV lying around that you don't mind losing?
harrismi7 I work at a Honda dealership and I’ve driven the HR-V and they aren’t AWFUL I would never buy one personally. But they’re just kinda bleh. They have a HR-V sport and that’s all you would really need. I prefer the Nissan Juke that I drive.

I have 2 cars an NB Miata and an HR-V. The HR-V is perfect for my small family, it's so practical and boring. I love it.
Jesus Christ. 32k for the HR-V?????? Why would you not get a CR-V
Fadic 4 agreed. Base is just around 20k. Much more reasonable. Once you add all the options you are better off going up a size.
the best part is, these are parts bin cars.. typically using much older engines, transmissions etc .. the profit margins on them are huge
We actually wanted a smaller SUV but got the CRV after looking at the HRV and Crosstrek with AWD. Their pricing with awd and active safety was almost as expensive as the CRV-EX AWD, which is way bigger, luxurious, and faster...
Why the HR-V over the CR-V? Because the CR-V is $5k more... Apples and oranges. Different size class, different price class.
N Pooch you can get a CR-V EX awd for 32k..... it's better in every single way.
The 2019 versions of both cars fixed a lot of these problems. I feel bad for anyone who got these models.
what sad from the chip shortage I only found dealerships with the 2018 version.

Thanks for the review but this is what I think they need to improve :
Honda HR-V:
Release a design refresh to fit to the other Honda line-up
Add Android Auto and Apple Carplay
Add Volume knob (like the Accord)
Add more physical button instead of touch
Improve cabin noise
Toyota CH-R:
Add AWD for sure
Improve Better visibility in second row (need redesign I think)
Add Android Auto and Apple Carplay integration
change the "aftermarket" infotainment system
Delete back up camera from mirror et move it to the infotainment system
Improve cabin noise
There's maybe more but I prefer the Honda because of the versatility of the back seat that remind me the Honda Fit and the All Wheel Drive.

Funny enough, I have access to both these cars at work and I agree with everything that was said by you guys! If forced, I would pick the HRV because it does feel a bit roomier than the CHR. Great reviews fellas, keep up the good work!
I would take the Toyota CH-R for sure😍
SpackotastischLP right! It’s sexy
Oh great stuff, lovely stuff. I own an old rusty Fit so if I had to get one of these two it would be the HRV. I will miss my magic seats...
'I feel like my Toyota looks like Megabyte from Reboot" 😅😂 Love that YTV classic!
In europe 140 Hp would be totally normal. Alot of cars got much less HP... Don´t get how North Americans complain about these cars to be "slow"
Niclas K it’s because some of them are arriving late to work and they need the extra HP to drive recklessly. Lol.
They
got big ass roads
Even the slow cars in North America are faster than many from the early 80's. I had a 1980 Ford Fiesta with all of 66 hp and loved the car, even though it was slow it felt sporty. To me it is more important how the car drives and comfort, especially seat comfort. It seem many new affordable cars are cutting cost in the seats which are just comfortable enough for a 15 minute test drive, and the first time you spend an hour in it you regret it.
Cause you guys drive manual on a auto 150bhp feels abysmal
In asia. 140hp+ is okay. No wonder why americans want more hp. Is it because their long and wide freeway where they travel state to state.
I would get the HRV, mostly because of visibility and I prefer Honda’s infotainment. I currently have a Civic so I’m use to Honda
Dave Fjeldsted definitely the bales looker and most power in the segment
Then you'd have to own a hyaundi tho..
Chase Short it would likely be the first of many. I was sceptical when I bought my first one 26 years ago. I love the value.
It’s not a fun stop and go point a to point b car but if you have to commute at all it’s actually a dream and it’s cute and sleek.
omg Megabyte from Reboot....you guys are so canadian
also the special outro was wicked!
OneObjective was reboot not American too?
It was, we had it too. I busted up laughing when you brought out the graphic! Total throwback!
Matt Wilson 😁
My wife and I had both these two models just to say we’re both glad to see the back of them for many reasons .
Honda HR-V is the far better car for a small family AND it comes with a 6 speed manual (which is why I bought one 😀)
Me too!!🤗
The Toyota C-HR also has Intelligent High beams and "Brake Hold" which are nice features. C-HR owner over here
Rant time: The coolness of the exterior design of the CHR is such a huge waste by filling it with a boring loaf of dry bread of a car.
Which Grand Turismo has that prototype car? I'm just curious.
Thank you for making a review about two sucky cross-overs so entertaining to watch!
Great review -- you guys bring up everything that could be important to a shopper. 0 to 60 numbers aren't important for every car, especially in this class, LOL. Just by watching I like the looks of the Toyota, but not really sure which I would prefer without actually getting into and driving them.
In asia market the HRV got a cool looking double projector in each headlight while CHR got an old looking wheel (not the dual tone).
^^so true!!
sean wilson. SUVs are not preferred by anyone who likes cars. They are a pain to drive, have lousy engines and look awful. SUVs are not for active driving but rolling around.
The infotainment in the chr has been improved a lot since this video. And they have leather and fog lights now.
visually i like the toyota, but price ,practicality, options like awd etc makes me lean far more towards the Honda but with out leather , ill stick with my more powerful easier to see out the back and practical almost 20 year old CRV :)
megabyte from reboot :D just not that horrible new reboot which is less reboot but shut off
fantastic video :)
Eco mode rocks 🎸
I just need a commuter car for work. I would rarely take it on the road for out of town trips.
My fathers friend bought a new HR-V, he is over 60-year-old not quote millennial
You guys told me to wait and did not disappoint. Great review once again
The 2019 Honda HRV is a pretty good urban vehicle at a good price. Forte is maneuvering and space.
Speed does not matter when you're stuck in traffic most of the time.
_窮 Jakub complained a lot about the C pillars
I wouldn't have either of them. The toyota does look better but those c pillars are ridiculous! great review again boys. Tuesdays and Thursdays are good days
That outtro was amazing!!
Yuri should sing the outro in every video... I die laughing, so funny
Grant Schubert 😜
Really liking the two car format lately y'all! Great job!
Wow, Pretty early, I think i would go with the Honda for design. I just think that the Toyota has too much going on and looks a bit weird. I like more simple designs when it comes to design.
I really wanted a Venza, but looking at this review changed my mind !!! Thanks
You guys are so good on editing that you can make anything come true with cgi
When you want AWD, and want something small, don't want an old used Rav or Samurai. Especially here in the BC interior. CHR isn't AWD. Both Fits and HRVs are massively popular here (HRV is basically a fit)
You guys should do big brothers: CR-V vs Rav4 as well
I have a 2018 CHR with a light blue body and a white roof. I really like it. I’ve been driving it since the end of April. I’ve gotten complements on this car. I don’t know but I love this car
Coming from a Honda apologist, I'll take the CH-R if my life depended on it (gun to my head.)
Was going out to get a used car today to buy an HR-V but now you guys changed my mind.
Going for the accord!
When Yuri actually said ey xP
malkionx ehhhhhhhh
Great to hear, thank you
I like it better when Yuri and Jakub review hot hatches. 😏
That said.....again I've been entertained with a review about two vehicles I'd never give a second glance, yet today I watched the whole video and even laughed out loud a couple times. Good times.
Glad to see a Reboot cameo in this review!
LOVE these comparison videos!!!
I really like this! The back and forth reviewing is really nice! I’m hooked watching this!
