Actor Cate Blanchett calls for Gaza ceasefire and urges EU to step up support of refugees

- Actor Cate Blanchett, a goodwill ambassador for the U.N.'s refugee agency UNHCR, urged the European Union to step up support of refugees and host countries and ensure the bloc's policy "focus on their protection and not on fortifying borders".
The Australian actress said she felt "shame and regret" over her country's hardline policies that for years has seen asylum-seekers sent to detention centres in Papua New Guinea and Nauru and barred from settling in Australia.
The Oscar-winning actor also urged Israel to accept a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.

Shaming people does exactly no good. Cate was *given* a platform because she is capable to speak about said issue. Not every famous person has the mental or emotional capacity to appropriately handle such difficult subjects or should they be given a platform for such matters. I'm sure other famous people help out with charities too. All kind people do that with their wealth. Let's hope those who pay attention to Cate chips in with the refugees situation. It's true, no one benefit from a generation of alienated young people. It's true. They are our future and it seems like the world is bent on killing them. The unsustainable wealth disparity in developed countries, the carpet bombing of children in places like Gaza, what happens to protecting our young? Humanity will not endure if this continues.

Just pointing out that even when people have the platform, most try to be “politically correct” rather than using their platform to speak the difficult truth. This holds even more true in light of the Gaza crisis- I’ve seen very few famous people (outside of scholars and historians- thank goodness for them!) speak up for justice.

I hold the opposite opinion as you on this point, I think people should not say anything at all unless they are adequately informed about said subject. It seems like nowadays people are under pressure to speak out and to hold a 'moral position' or they'll be scrutinized. Speaking out alone does no good if the words are not sincere and true. It just adds noise to an already noisy world. Slogans are no good in solving complicated issues.

Unlike most of them, I have travelled to Israel and Palestine to research the conflict, which has been ongoing since 1947. When you see first hand the ongoing theft of Palestinian land that is supported and enforced by the current Israeli government, it is easy to understand the frustration and anger of Palestinians. Anyone who does not recognise how much this situation is like Apartheid era South Africa is just refusing to look at it and see the everyday restrictions and humiliations that Palestinians suffer.

She is basically saying ceasefire now for palestine and israel but dont forget they are not that important, ukraine etc. etc. need attention too.
