  • Try this finesse fishing rig nobody is talking about! Finesse bass fishing is an excellent way to catch a bunch of bass when the fishing gets tough! The split shot rig is an excellent finesse fishing rig for bass as it allows you to fish small worms a little deeper than you usually could. Finesse fishing for bass is my favorite way to get a lot of bites when the fishing is tough specifically in the post spawn and the split shot rig is one of my favorite ways to do so. Give this a shot and see if it works for you!

We used to fish this style of rig back in the dark ages with a Mann's Jelly Worm (purple grape), but to avoid the line damage from a split shot on our 6lb and 8lb Trilene, we would clip the brass out of the tiniest bell sinker we could get and run it on the line pegged with a soft toothpick or a slice of rubber band pressed into the hole in the sinker. Worked great, especially on heavily pressured waters. The tapered bell sinker (now turned into a sort of primitive bullet weight) would come through cover much better than the round split shot ever did. Still use the rig today, 45+ years later and it still gets the bass.

Haven't found a split shot yet that won't slide on fluorocarbon line! Mono no problem! Crimp it to hard and you will cut your line, I found if I wrap the line around the shot once and crimp it stays put, but now I just use 2 bobber stops before and after the light bullet weight and get the same effect.

I was shown this setup years ago by a teacher of mine that ran the Conservation Club ,of which I was a member.
We would use worms & we often did very well on bluegills, bass, catfish etc....

A 6 inch straight tail Robo worm with a light wire 3/0 hook on that rig has been deadly for me this year

What a great reminder! I actually started bass fishing with this rig too many years ago to mention-I am as old as dirt-and it caught me a TON of fish. If you can find a worm with a bit of float to it that also has a curly tail, that also works great.

This is a good rig, when I tie the swivel on I leave a half inch tag end that I can crimp the split shot onto. That way it can't damage your main line.

In the south we have called it split shottin. I've used it for 40+ yrs. It's one of the most versatile ways to fish live bait and plastic baits as well.

Your stick bait split shot rig is an exceptionally great rig for the Z-Man Bang StickZ (not meaning to step on the products you promote).

A Bull shot is a better weight for coming through weeds. It's a bullet shaped version of a split shot

I like using the split shots that are all without those little wings on them. It makes the beat spin around and you can get hung up to.

I use a pegged 1/16 oz tungsten worm weight and a light wire 2/0 or 3/0 hook with a 6" fat roboworm. You don't need the boyant bait if you are using a light wire hook.

The reason it's not talked about years ago it was modified into an adjustable sliding carolina rig small weight pegged with a tooth pick or two sinker stops. The split shot damages the line as you noted.

I do a similar rig that’s kind of a cross between this and a Carolina rig. But, I prefer to peg a light weight instead of using a split shot.
That 6th Sense worm really piqued my interest. I’m going to check those out! I currently use Lunkerhunt sticks that I cut in half. I also use them on Ned rigs. But, they fall faster than I’d like.

I know everyone is a bait expert on RUclips but you want the ultimate grass rig involving a senko (stick bait) run a hitch hiker small willow blade screwed in the end of your choice stick bait weightless! Preferably gold willow leaf and hang on!

Am I missing something here? It seems the concept is to keep the worm just off the bottom but have the weight maintain contact with the bottom. Seems very similar to a drop shot rig to me.

  • @Ronjon86

Any reason not to use a pegged worm weight in place of the spilt shot?

    • @nathanquincefishing7122

Split shot is removable and less expensive. But a bullet weight is less likely to snag, which is a big issue where I fish.
