I have the T5 with a 2.95 1st gear and the 3rd member has 3.73's in my 89 LX Sport. The original transmission (1st gear) was figured for the 2.73 & 3.08 gearset.
You can"t talk about rear-end gearing without factoring in transmission gear ratios. The stock world class T5 has a 3.35 first gear ratio, this allows it to get out of the hole with the low(numerically) rear ratios that come stock such as 2.73, 3.08, or 3.27. Most aftermarket performance transmissions such as the T5Z or TKO600/TKX will have a 2.95 or thereabouts first gear ratio. They do this knowing that most enthusiast guys have gone up in rear gear(numerically) to 3.55, 3.73, 4.10. That 2.95 or so first gear ratio combined with say a 3.73 rear gear is really a sweet spot for gearing in these cars. It brings back a usable first gear and when you hit 2nd it's at the proper RPM range. When you have the stock 3.35 first gear combined with 3.73 rear gear you're out of first gear sooo fast. My personal recommendation for a street car would be as follows -With a stock T5 with 3.35 first gear, I'd go with a used set of 3.27's. you can find these cheap on craigslist or marketplace because they came stock on a bunch of models. this is my mind is the most rear gear i'd want with the stock t5 (overall first gear ratio 10.95) -With an aftermarket Trans with a 2.95 first I'd go with 3.73 rear(11.00 overall first gear ratio) or 4.10 rear (12.09 overall first gear ratio) Also worth noting is the aftermarket transmissions usually have a lower(numerically) final drive ratio to bring highway cruising RPM back down
Ive got A 3.73 83 firebird t5 and 3.55 is the "defacto pontiac" ratio. This test really helps me figure things out. imma drive my car all over the country so now im leaning towards 3.08
I have been thinking 3:55, but being VERT should I go 3:73 due to the weight? hmmmm I had 2002 ROUSH went 3:73 but that was coupe and I loved them! Still have 2:73 but my '93 I dont want twister her up too bad with all that torque either! Going to do the Stifflers Fit System Chassis Stiffening Kit for sure!
My ASC/McLaren Coupe has 3.08s but with the stock 225/50/15s, comes out to about 3.31. That's nice for a factory motor that drops off at 4400. Now that I have heads that breath to 6000, maybe I'll go stiffer. In 1987, I put 3.73s in my stock '86 ASC with the same tires and I was shifting in the intersection. Hated it. All comes down to the heads used, I suspect.
Yeah, power band and motor set up will definitely play into this as well. As for the speedo bounce, Ive tried new cables, new gauge, new speedo gears etc. still got the bounce 🤷♂️
Nice video, I have a 69 Mustang with a 3:47 Stroker and AOD transmission. I'm thinking about putting the 373s, but I'm not sure how high my RPMs would be with that transmission.
I went with 4.10's in my car as it put me right at 6,000 rpm at the end of the 1/4 mile in 4th gear. With the tire size and hp peak of my engine it worked well
@@KASLCustoms I went from 2.73's to 4.10's 🤣🤣 even went up to 4.56's at one point lol I had plans to run the car in NMRA pure street class but life got in the way at the time
It is a pretty steep gear ratio but if your only doing “low speed” driving then I don’t see much of an issue. Keep in mind you will be shifting a lot if your car is a manual trans
Great video👍 Concerning jumpy speedometers, I’ve actually heard that the reason sometimes is the magnets in the mechanism has lost their power/degaussed over time..hence an even smooth pull to the “hand”/ meter is no longer there..making it jump. Especially at lower speeds..I’ve tried it myself, using magnets from a spare meter , and it got better… for awhile. Something worth trying if you a chance maybe? Best bet I guess would be if someone could recharge those magnets properly..
Thx buddy! I’ve even tried changing the speedo gauge and not even that helped…🤷♂️. Ive got a feeling that my speedo cable was ran a 1/4” off where it should have been from the factory and it’s rubbing in the cable sheath. One of these days I’ll get it beside the Vert and bust out the micrometer 😉
@@KASLCustoms a guy with what seemed like a lotta knowledge on this once said only an original ford cable works properly, (and not too worn out obviously) no after market cable is 100% up for the job..supposedly
Like most thing I guess hey bud…? I actually changed the cable back when you could buy them from Ford because this car literally did it from the time I bought it in 1997
Ive had both in several foxs and if u want to street race alot 373 if u plan to drive and just want a lil more better gear 355 both are great for everyday driving
My 95 gt daily has the anticlimactic 2:73s and yes it's sweet to pop it in 5th and cruise at 1300/1400rpm in traffic but I don't mind driving in 4th where it's closer to 2k. But as everybody knows they hurt acceleration big time even tho the HO has impressive Tq for a small short stroke engine so it's not as bad as most would assume but deff no neck snapping acceleration. I'm going to do a gear swap but I don't wanna feel like I'm cruising at 55mph in 3rd. I'm thinking 3.55 is the best compromise... Also I'm thinking is where at the moment having a bone stock 5.0 and there pretty underwhelming in higher RPMs really low gears may not feel as impressive as a slightly higher gear that can use some of that TQ they have. Mine seems to pull best around 3500ish you can really feel the TQ pulling good and wringing it out to 5500+ is kinda pointless where you can feel the power dropping off and it's just not doing a whole lot except gaining rpm. That small long runner HO intake just won't breathe in upper rpm but does make TQ. I do plan on doing some upgrades at some point what depends on when or what reason it needs a rebuild. But at least intake, cam and long tubes. I'd love to grab a pair of enforcers, I may be able to swing it at moment maybe but if money's super tight may end up doing some mild porting to the E7s if there in good shape that is but if they need overhauling I'm deff going aftermarket heads preferably enforcers but there's some decent even more budget ones out there now and anything is better than E7s and I'm definitely not dumping money into those turds. Problem I have is I have a hotrod truck that needs engine n trans, the 355 just needs a short block I can swap heads cam n intake worst case, trans I'm not sure needs to be decent but not super expensive, all comes down to vehical Prioritys, my gt is basically my daily but have a caravan also that has my big sound system (big subs, big amp and lithium) truck is a toy that drive to work here n there when it's all good which isn't at moment. Well that was a semi off topic ramble! Lol
3.73:1 make first gear almost unusable without slicks. I have 2 foxes. One with 3.73s and one with 3.27's. The 3.27 car is faster with less mods. You get more out of 1st gear and when you shift to 2nd it doesn't feel like you're hitting a wall with 3.27's like you do with 3.73's for some reason. Nowadays 3.73's are the 'go to' for the 3rd and 4th generation Foxbody owners.
First gear is “low” with a stock T-5 and 3.73’s but by no means have I ever found it low enough to not use first gear from a dead stop. With a big power motor, I would definitely change my tune on this topic but for a simple HCI setup like mine, I like the 3.73’s 👍
@@KASLCustoms note that I said unusable without slicks; meaning it blows the tires off anywhere in 1st gear if I attempt to give it the beans. I'm running a 275 tire out back. Nothing to do with driving from a dead stop.
@@KASLCustoms I got the 7.3 liter Godzilla in my new Super Duty. I put a Stainless Works dual exhaust on it and it sounds awesome. I took my 5.0 out for the first time last week. It has a Bassani X pipe and Flowmasters. The truck sounds much better, unfortunately. I need to get those RPMs up in the vert to get a better exhaust note! 😆
Like I said in the video, it all depends on what you’re doing with your car. If you drive it for 20-30miles per day at 75 mph, or you take it on long drives at highway speeds, I wouldn’t personally go to a 4:10
I like the 373. And not that high of rpms on the highway. I had a 67 Camaro with 373 but it was 4 speed. In 4th at 65 it was doing around 3500 rpms but was fairly quick through the quarter mile.
Maybe I missed it, but did you change the speedo gears to compensate for the rear-end gears? Good video. I was happy with my 3.73s in my '90 GT Convertible (5-speed). I always thought 1st was too short tho.
I had the same problem with a bouncing speedometer i Fix it take the speedometer wire out and lube it good white lightning grease spray can mine is running perfect now no bouncing
I don’t believe so because the automatics are geared differently then the T-5’s. They may have points (at various speeds) where they are close but definitely not the exact same.
@@KASLCustoms Thanks for answering my question. I will test my gear ratio in my auto transmission and let you know what the speeds/RPM shift points are.
Yeah, tall gears only benefit you if you don't have to have your foot "in it" while it's at lower RPM i.e. slight downhill grade. My Notch with 3.73's can get as high as 30ish mpg on the highway with slight variations of grade. Moral of the story: The less throttle you have to give it - regardless of engine RPM - the better the fuel milage 👍
Question. Have a ford galaxie 500. With a 445 stroker in it. With 9 inch rear trying to do sum research on rear end gears. I want power. To play with like at the strip , but I want to be able to drive it on the weekends and take it on the highway what would u suggest , like 3.73 ?
I have a 96 viper gts. It comes with 17s and a 3.07. I was considering 3.55s, however, I am running 19s front and 20s rear and think a 3.73 may be better suited.
SN95 owner. I'll get 3.73s when the time comes. Can't stand these stock highway gears. But i may miss them because my V8 Mustang gets better gas mileage than my V6 4x4 truck which has 3.73s.
@KASLCustoms That’s cool. Guess it'll be while before mine gets change. Got an estimate at the shop. $900 and that's with me supplying all the necessary parts.
Your literally splitting hairs wit those gears options. Nobody would honestly say they can tell a difference with them two. Going from a 2:73 or 3.08 to a 3.73 would give a full wheel spin of difference. Now In my race car I went from a 5.30 rear gear going thru the traps at 88mph at 7k rpm’s. To a 3.90 gear. Now I go thru at 110 mph at 7k rpm’s.
Great video Gary, I appreciate the work that goes into these videos. I think a few factors that matter: 1. Power level (or planned power level) of the car. 2. What transmission is in the car (if you have a manual with a 2.95 first instead of the stock 3.35 1st, you will need to account for that). 3. What is your tolerance for freeway (cruising) RPM. 4. Weight of the car (heavier cars need more gear) 5. Do you have racing goals? My 3.73s felt doggy on the low end with my HCI '89 vert. I have a T5Z with the 2.95 first gear and the .63 overdrive. I did my first gear change on my own over this past winter. After playing with the Tremec online calculators, I decided on 4.30s. Couldn't be happier. Feels 100 times faster and I can still cruise at 74 mph at 2600 RPM. BTW, please keep doing the podcast with Chris. It's awesome!
When I filled out the build sheet on my 5 speed '90 lx hatch, I checked the 'secret' box to get a 3.08 instead of the standard 2.73. A few months later I had a 3.73 installed when I decided that the 3.08 was not low enough. Ideally, if you race, you want to choose the gear that gets you through the trap at redline. Generally 3.73 for 5 speed and 4.10 for AOD if NA or 3.55 for 5 speed and 3.73 for AOD with a power adder.
Thanks for this. I was looking to go 3.55s but I am thinking lower cause i could get some long range already from 1st-3rd and pushing 47 mph in 1st at 5500 rpm.
Great explanation on gear ratios 👍quick question for you I'm not sure what's in my 87 is that stamped on the gear somewhere to see easily? Thanks for uploading video take care stay safe later bro 👍
Hey bud. You’re very welcome! Does your diff cover still have the tag on one of the bolts? If so, it will say the gear ratio on the tag. If they have been changed out and the tag has been removed, you’ll have to either pull the cover and look at the stamp on the pinion, or jack the back up and count pinion rotations…
@@KASLCustoms sorry bud just saw your response and thank you for your response and no my gift cover doesn't have a tag anymore I have a whole different rear end put in my car for that Mustang year make and model but I'm not sure what is in it so I'll have to count opinion rotations thank you for your response take care stay safe👍
I've a 06 mustang gt. Unlike others my car is super explosive off the line in first gear. I hear alot of guys day their first gear is useless...not sure. I've 3.55 gears with 20 inch rims. Tire size is off set Front: 255 35 20 Back: 295 30 20 Should I keep 3.55 or upgrade to 3.73 Thanks for the help
I have a stock '92 with a World Class T5 and 2.73 gears. When I bought the car it came with a 3.73 gearset in the box. In readihg the comments below, I think that 3.73 is not going to be satisfactory for me because I don't want first gear to be too short. I suspect that 3.27s would be a lot better for me. The 2.73 is a bit too low, and I think makes it more prone to bucking when cruising slow (5-10 mph). I am looking for a higher ratio to cure that and get a little more acceleration without smoking tires all the time.
@@neilbrown82 I decided to go with a 3.73 and it is totally awesome. It is the perfect street ratio for these cars. Its like I now have a 4 speed with 5th as overdrive. With the 2.73 it was like a 3 speed with 4th and 5th both acting like overdrives. And it doesn't smoke the tires unless I want it to.
Nice video bud. Mind would jump to I changed my gear that goes on the speed cable transmission side under the car. And it stop my hand from jumping hope it helps you fix it thanks for the video
4.10 in my 90 gt. But I dont drive it everyday. Lucky to put 200 miles a year on it. New engine is about ready to go in and I'm doing a 5 speed swap so I may do 355 or 373. I probably will because my ranger drag truck has 456 gears and I want to do 410 in it.
Get a helper, lift the rear of your car off the ground, mark your tire and drive shaft, then count how many times your drive shaft turns in correlation to one full turn of your tire 👍
hey bud your video was the first one i watched for this gears switch up and beat video by far . i have a 90 LX notch and its got an intake, headers and flow master exhaust n o cats. stock gears make the car nice to drive but now ppl been saying go up for the 3.73. i don't like driving rough or doing burnouts but i would like drive this car from a grandma having tea to a grandma on preworkoutl lol.. you think i should go 3.55 or 3.73? thanks
Thx for the kind words! In all honesty there is not a massive difference between the two gear ratios - maybe 150-200 RPM at most with the stock T-5 etc. All that said, the biggest place you’re probably going to notice the higher RPM of the 3.73’s is on highway/freeway cruises. If you do a lot of “Higher speed” driving, I’d go with the 3.55’s. They are a great and very noticeable difference. Otherwise, I’d go 3.73’s if you mainly do short in town cruises. Not to say you can’t do longer highway cruises with 3.73’s, you’ll just notice that your car is reving fairly high if you’re up around the 75+mph mark for extended periods of time
I had 3.73 gears and I couldn’t get through the intersection without shifting . What gear out there would give me better acceleration over the stock 2.73 but would allow me to get through a intersection without shifting ?
2014 Mustang v6 stock 2.73s. I got a mpt tune with the CAI & Roush axel backs. (Sounds like shit) put a 170 thermo and 3.55s in this year. Not bad, catches secound gear. Needs a stick shift though. That transmission sucks balls.
For what I do with my car, I prefer the 3.73’s but I also don’t drive it at higher speeds for long periods of time either. If I did, I think I’d prefer the 3.55’s 👍
I’ve got a 91’ stock vert that almost never sees the hwy but I like a little spirited driving … been thinking about doing gears to give it a little more something without doing major mods.
Here's What I Learned about Gears in Mustangs. Number 1 : If You DONT Live in Germany and Drive Your Mustang On The Speed UNLIMITED AUTOBAHN HIGHWAY ... And None of Us DO .. Then ... DON'T BE AFRAID TO SWAP in MUCH LOWER GEARS ... ! It Comes Down to These TWO Things ... If You DONT Drive Much On Long Straight Roads / Street s / Highways ... Then , The Best Gears Are ANY From 3 : 45 MINIMUM AND On Up to 5 : 14 With Both Auto and Stick Overdriive Trannies. And Stock to Mildly Modified Engines. And The Second Thing Is : If You REALLY DO ALOT Of LONG DISTANCE STRAIGHT ROADS / HIGHWAY DRIVING ... THEN OBVIOUSLY The BETTER Gears ARE ANY From 2 : 73 on Up to about 3 : 55 / 3 : 73 MAXIMUM. For Both Auto and Stick Overdriive Trannies. For NON - Overdriive Auto and Stick Transmissions ... A Little Less Gearing is More DESIRABLE. SO ... For Long HIGHWAYS Driving ... It Better To Use Gears From 2 : 73 to 3 : 55 MAXIMUM. And For ALL Close / " AROUND The Area " Shorter And Hills And Twisting Roads DRIVING ... Then ... BEST Gears to Use Are MINIMUM 3 : 45 On Up To About 4 : 88 MAXIMUM . AGAIN ... DONT BE AFRAID TO GEAR IT FOR BETTER AND WAY MORE FUN AND SATISFYING " THROUGH THE GEARS " " SEAT OF THE PANTS " PUNCH ... ! And DONT WORRY ABOUT HIGH TOP END SPEEDS AND GAS MILEAGE ... ! THINK ABOUT IT ... ! WHERE ARE YOU EVER EVEN GONNA BE ABLE TO SAFELY HIT ANYTHING OVER 110 MILES AN HOUR ON ANY ROADS OF THE UNITED STATES ANYWAYS ... ? ? POLICE WILL NOT ALLOW SUCH RIDICULOUS HIGH TOP END SPEEDS AND OVER 90 MPH SPEEDING ANYWAYS ... ! SO ... GEAR YOUR CAR FOR WAY MORE " ALL AROUND " STREET RIPPIN FUN AND SATISFACTION ACCELERATION ... ! USE 3 : 45 MINIMUM AND EXPERIMENT WITH EVEN LOWER GEARS From 3 : 55 ON UP TO EVEN 5 : 14 . LEAVE THE HIGHER GEARS OF 2 : 73 TO 3 : 08 AND 3 : 27 FOR ONLY LONGER STRAIGHT STREET / HIGHWAYS DRIVING CARS . SIMPLE AS THAT.

@@mikemarks6562 No Problem. I like shorties and have done a couple of videos on them if you're interested. Both were on Verts too
@@KASLCustoms yea I saw them
I have the T5 with a 2.95 1st gear and the 3rd member has 3.73's in my 89 LX Sport. The original transmission (1st gear) was figured for the 2.73 & 3.08 gearset.
Get video man!! I'm currently debating this very thing right now! Thanks for the info!!!
Right on!! Glad I could help 👊
My personal recommendation for a street car would be as follows
-With a stock T5 with 3.35 first gear, I'd go with a used set of 3.27's. you can find these cheap on craigslist or marketplace because they came stock on a bunch of models. this is my mind is the most rear gear i'd want with the stock t5 (overall first gear ratio 10.95)
-With an aftermarket Trans with a 2.95 first I'd go with 3.73 rear(11.00 overall first gear ratio) or 4.10 rear (12.09 overall first gear ratio)
Also worth noting is the aftermarket transmissions usually have a lower(numerically) final drive ratio to bring highway cruising RPM back down
Thanks for sharing 👍
Ive got A 3.73 83 firebird t5 and 3.55 is the "defacto pontiac" ratio.
This test really helps me figure things out.
imma drive my car all over the country so now im leaning towards 3.08
Nice 👍
I have 2.73 in my ls 5 speed truck and it does burn out thru first and second if I get after it hard enough
With 295/50/15 at 70 mph the rpm was at 1700
I have been thinking 3:55, but being VERT should I go 3:73 due to the weight? hmmmm I had 2002 ROUSH went 3:73 but that was coupe and I loved them! Still have 2:73 but my '93 I dont want twister her up too bad with all that torque either! Going to do the Stifflers Fit System Chassis Stiffening Kit for sure!
The difference between 355 and 373 is very minimal. I cannot imagine you ever twisting you car up unless you're launching it with slicks
@@KASLCustoms I loved 3:73 in my 2002 ROUSH to be honest! Hmm soooo hard to decide LOL and the extra weight of the Vert is selling point too!
Oh, the speedo? You check the cable? Sounds like a kink.
With the tire size and hp peak of my engine it worked well
Right on! Like I said, every person’s situation is a little different. Sounds like you found the perfect gear for your situation 👌👊
@@KASLCustoms I went from 2.73's to 4.10's 🤣🤣 even went up to 4.56's at one point lol I had plans to run the car in NMRA pure street class but life got in the way at the time
How do 4.10s do for on the road driving?
It is a pretty steep gear ratio but if your only doing “low speed” driving then I don’t see much of an issue. Keep in mind you will be shifting a lot if your car is a manual trans
@@KASLCustoms how is it for highway speed? 60-80mph range
Thx for the tip my friend. I have tried that as well but no luck… 🤦♂️
@@KASLCustoms a guy with what seemed like a lotta knowledge on this once said only an original ford cable works properly, (and not too worn out obviously) no after market cable is 100% up for the job..supposedly

@@KASLCustoms it’s about the same either way. I wish it was 3.73 😆
Ive had both in several foxs and if u want to street race alot 373 if u plan to drive and just want a lil more better gear 355 both are great for everyday driving
373s in my car, but I'd love to swap to a 2.97 1st gear trans. Second gear comes real fast.

I'm thinking of going from my current 3:73 to 4:10s. Am I nuts?
Not a big difference
Like I said in the video, it all depends on what you’re doing with your car. If you drive it for 20-30miles per day at 75 mph, or you take it on long drives at highway speeds, I wouldn’t personally go to a 4:10
Depends on what you plan for your car.
not much change why bother
I went to 4:10s. They feel so good.
Yes I did but I did a separate video on it, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/HNDJNQiFerA/видео.html

Would the test results yield the same results if both cars were equipped with automatic transmissions with overdrive?
I don’t believe so because the automatics are geared differently then the T-5’s. They may have points (at various speeds) where they are close but definitely not the exact same.
@@KASLCustoms Thanks for answering my question. I will test my gear ratio in my auto transmission and let you know what the speeds/RPM shift points are.
Perfect!
I drive mine on the freeway a lot. I have the stock 2:73 gears. Fuel mileage is terrible on the 89 vert. I only average 190-200 miles per tank
Thank you for this video man
You’re welcome 👊👊
Question. Have a ford galaxie 500. With a 445 stroker in it. With 9 inch rear trying to do sum research on rear end gears. I want power. To play with like at the strip , but I want to be able to drive it on the weekends and take it on the highway what would u suggest , like 3.73 ?
My two favourites are 3.55 and 3.73 but if I had to pick just one, I'd pick the 3.73
I have a 96 viper gts. It comes with 17s and a 3.07. I was considering 3.55s, however, I am running 19s front and 20s rear and think a 3.73 may be better suited.

Great comparison man! This was so needed. I bet tos 373s keep that cam in the power.

SN95 owner. I'll get 3.73s when the time comes. Can't stand these stock highway gears. But i may miss them because my V8 Mustang gets better gas mileage than my V6 4x4 truck which has 3.73s.
My coupe still does pretty good on the highway 28-30mpg
I think a few factors that matter:
1. Power level (or planned power level) of the car.
2. What transmission is in the car (if you have a manual with a 2.95 first instead of the stock 3.35 1st, you will need to account for that).
3. What is your tolerance for freeway (cruising) RPM.
4. Weight of the car (heavier cars need more gear)
Good info buddy! Thanks so much for sharing. All very good points 👊
Oh and thanks for the kind words on the podcast! We’re having a blast doing it 👍
When I filled out the build sheet on my 5 speed '90 lx hatch, I checked the 'secret' box to get a 3.08 instead of the standard 2.73.
That’s awesome! Well said 👍

It all depends on what you do with the car...
Lol don't fear the gear gramps! 3.27s are boring
@@neilbrown82 I decided to go with a 3.73 and it is totally awesome. It is the perfect street ratio for these cars. Its like I now have a 4 speed with 5th as overdrive. How can I figure out which gears I have in the 8.8 rear?
Get a helper, lift the rear of your car off the ground, mark your tire and drive shaft, then count how many times your drive shaft turns in correlation to one full turn of your tire 👍
Take the rear diff cover off . The gear number is stamped on the head of the pinion gear .
Then you need to replace the gear oil and friction modifier. Counting wheel/pinion turns is the quickest and cheapest method 👍
Do they both have the same trans?
Yes, I mention that in my video 👍
What's the gas mileage between the 2? Thanks
About the same

Thx for the kind words! In all honesty there is not a massive difference between the two gear ratios - maybe 150-200 RPM at most with the stock T-5 etc. All that said, the biggest place you’re probably going to notice the higher RPM of the 3.73’s is on highway/freeway cruises. If you do a lot of “Higher speed” driving, I’d go with the 3.55’s. They are a great and very noticeable difference. Otherwise, I’d go 3.73’s if you mainly do short in town cruises. Not to say you can’t do longer highway cruises with 3.73’s, you’ll just notice that your car is reving fairly high if you’re up around the 75+mph mark for extended periods of time
What is your MPG in each car?
It's not much different in each car. 16ish around town and low to mid 20's on the highway
