Franz Schubert - Erlkönig (Sheet music and lyrics)

- Franz Schubert composed his Lied "Erlkönig" for solo voice and piano in 1815, setting text from Goethe's poem. Schubert revised the song three times before publishing his fourth version in 1821 as his Opus 1; it was catalogued by Otto Erich Deutsch as D. 328 in his 1951 catalog of Schubert's works. The song was first performed in concert on 1 December 1820 at a private gathering in Vienna and received its public premiere on 7 March 1821 at Vienna's Theater am Kärntnertor.
The four characters in the song - narrator, father, son, and the Erlking - are all sung by a single vocalist. Schubert placed each character largely in a different vocal range, and each has his own rhythmic nuances; in addition, most singers endeavor to use a different vocal coloration for each part.
1. The Narrator lies in the middle range and begins in the minor mode.
2. The Father lies in the lower range and sings in both minor and major mode.
3. The Son lies in a higher range, also in the minor mode.
4. The Erlking's vocal line, in the major mode, provides the only break from the ostinato bass triplets in the accompaniment until the boy's death.
"Erlkönig" has been transcribed for various settings: for solo piano by Franz Liszt; for solo voice and orchestra by Hector Berlioz; for solo violin by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst.

I love how Schubert paints a picture with the music. The rhythm of the entire piece is a galloping horse, every character's voice is in the appropriate octave and all those little details, for example when the text talks about lulling the boy to sleep at 2:34. You can literally hear how the notes are weighing left and right.
Who else came here from the Sideways video?
AND he composed this in 3 HOURS!!!
Repent and trust in Jesus. He's the only way. We deserve Hell because we've sinned. Lied, lusted stolen, etc. But God sent his son to die on the cross and rise out of the grave. We can receive forgiveness from Jesus. Repent and put your trust in him.

Just listening to this is making my hands cramp
I don't play the piano, but my brother does, and he played this song, and I understand why. 1 hand is just constantly making notes to represent the horse galloping.
@@Dalek_Scientist and the left hand octave is also very quick
HUH
You forgot the fifth character: the horse is represented by the repeating triplets in the rigth hand in the piano line :)
xD
Yeah, but, like, that's to help you distinguish the characters while reading the lyrics from the lyric sheet. The horse wasn't mentioned because there's no need to distinguish it since it has no lyrics.
Having said that:
This concept of using that fast, stabby rhythm to refer to a hard running horse is one of my favorite musical expressions I've come across because it's so easy to visualize and it sets the tone of urgency in the song, which then lends power to the story that's being told through the lyrics. Easily one of my favorite pieces of music all time, but I'm just a really crappy bass player, so it be what it be. Gnome Saiyajin?? XD
@@mtdarkness82 you'll also find it in Liszt's mazeppa
Yesss!!! And Schubert described it so amazing!
Schubert does a lots of fast notes to show moment- Another example of that is Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel.

I can't even imagine how it's possible. I've tried numerous time, always failing lol
It is unbelievable that Schubert's publisher returned this song to him, saying that it was far below Schubert's usual standard. Fortunately, posterity has judged otherwise.
This reminds me of Fantaisie-Impromptu. Chopin requested that all his unfinished manuscripts were burned. However, his friend, Julian Fontana, published his work despite Chopin's will.
It's obviously not the same case, but it makes you wonder how many masterpieces never saw the light of day...

My story is exactly the same! It was in my accompanying class I discovered this piece.
Dude I was listening to this for my school and I decided to cry and it felt so epic

This is one of the greatest song cycles of Schubert (Lieder) ever composed! One can clearly hear the anxiety and sadness that outpours from this poem and Schubert sets this song cycle beautifully! As someone who studied German for a year while in high school, I can hear through the vivid words the dwindling spirit of the person throughout this song. As a composer of classical music, I use this Lied for inspiration. Danke schön (Thank you)!

By far the best version I've heard,in all the others the singer's were over singing and over pronounced the words ... This is my favourite performance by far ❤
so beautiful
I first heard “The Erlking” in community college. Even though my knowledge of the German language is limited, it gave me nightmares. I was a music student back then. What got rid of the nightmares was when I was asked to learn how to play it for a recital along with three Chopin compositions-two mazurkas and “The Minute Waltz”. However, I was given a month to learn them. I worked part time, went to school full time, and took weekly piano lessons, so I really didn’t have enough time to learn all of them. I was able to fully learn all three of the Chopin compositions and just started learning “Erlking.” I can tell you that it’s challenging with its fast tempo and with the right hand playing octaves at that tempo…even the most experienced pianist can’t do that, so the octaves are played 1-8 (low note to high note) but super quick as possible so that it sounds like the two notes are played together rather than apart. Reading the composition again brings back some memories.
Excellent video, Doctor.
Just beautiful ( exept for what this whole song is about)
I love how complicated and beautiful this perfect piece is, and at the end the last two chords at 4:08 schubert was like : Fuck! This!
It makes perfect sense if you know the words. The horse had stopped galloping at that point.
@@jakegearhart My comment was meant more as a joke comment, as a native German speaker who knows his music theory you can be sure that I know that it makes perfect sense, it just sounds a little like a fuck this ending don't know why

Truly a banger
I was just listening to Schubert's "Winterreise" and when I listened to "Rückblick", I had to stop the song and said to myself, "Wait a minute...that kinda has the same dynamic and darkness like the Erlkönig. But the Erlkönig is not by Schubert, but by Goethe. Has Schubert actually composed the music?" Well, seems that is the case. :D

Good!
This song stings my heart. Feels very strange.
Schubert tells a short story in 4 minutes!
English Translation : Who rides so late through the night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He has the boy in his arms;
he holds him safely, he keeps him warm.
‘My son, why do you hide your face in fear?’
‘Father, can you not see the Erlking?
The Erlking with his crown and tail?’
‘My son, it is a streak of mist.’
‘Sweet child, come with me.
I’ll play wonderful games with you.
Many a pretty flower grows on the shore;
my mother has many a golden robe.’
‘Father, father, do you not hear
what the Erlking softly promises me?’
‘Calm, be calm, my child:
the wind is rustling in the withered leaves.’
‘Won’t you come with me, my fine lad?
My daughters shall wait upon you;
my daughters lead the nightly dance,
and will rock you, and dance, and sing you to sleep.’
‘Father, father, can you not see
Erlking’s daughters there in the darkness?’
‘My son, my son, I can see clearly:
it is the old grey willows gleaming.’
‘I love you, your fair form allures me,
and if you don’t come willingly, I’ll use force.’
‘Father, father, now he’s seizing me!
The Erlking has hurt me!’
The father shudders, he rides swiftly,
he holds the moaning child in his arms;
with one last effort he reaches home;
the child lay dead in his arms.
muito lindo

Incredibly, somehow, prior to now, I had never come back and listened to Erlkonig, the original. I had only been familiar with it as the Ernst transcription, which I had admired purely for its notorious difficulty. After listening, I've gained a serious new appreciation for what Erlkonig is -- nothing short of a masterpiece -- and what any real performance of the transcription should attempt to convey.
And unfortunately it seems like many of them miss the mark quite badly. Perhaps some of them have studied the Schubert lied for guidance, perhaps some of them haven't. Either way there are a number of quite false and unfaithful traditions that seem to have been routinely passed down: for instance, many large ritardandi and breaks between sections are frequently inserted, the chosen shaping of the melodic line often fails to complement the meaning of the lyrics, and in particular, most egregiously, the Erlking's final lines are usually performed at half-tempo or slower, as if it were some sort of break from the action, whereas in truth the intensity must only continue to mount. Additionally, Ernst himself appears to have not quite accurately transcribed all of the melodic lines in the first place, sometimes without obvious justification, though the transcription is still hardly composed in a manner which would make a performance in the spirit of the original impossible.
This has given me the impetus to take up Erlkonig once again myself as a player, and endeavor to create my own unique edition which ideally corrects most of the melodic discrepancies and holds truer to the original interpretation. The technical challenges of Ernst's contrapuntal writing hardly vanish, of course, but I can no longer listen to most performances of the Ernst version in quite the same way, knowing just how far the performers sometimes stray from the source material.
wer muss es auch für Schule anschauen :)

SHE FOUND THE ERLKING
(the lover)
I came here for a school assignment, there was a translation. Basically, there's a guy and his son riding a horse at night, and the son keeps saying he sees and hears a creature usually translated as "The Erlking" beckoning to him. The father repeatedly explains this away--it's a log, or the wind, or mist. Towards the end of the song the Erlking attacks the child and the father rides faster to try to escape, but finds that his son is dead in his arms.
Erlking is the literal symbol of death. The erlking offers pleasures if the boy joins him, and the father is trying to get his son to not beleive that he is there, to calm the son. So in essence, they boy was on the verge of death, and the father was trying to get him to a hospital or something the like, before he died, but the son died along the way. And basically death got him
