One of the better explanations of color mixing. Very logical. Thanks.

Constructing the color wheel was informative and interesting. I saw it as very creative in the hues. Excellent teaching.

I just started to teach myself painting using RUclips as my primary guide. A self-produced color wheel is on my list activities. My paint brand of choice at the moment is the Blick Basic. This video supported my suspicion that I should purchase additional premixed colors to compliment the Studio intro set. Thanks for this lesson. 🙂

Yes! with acrylics, the more color variations you have available the better due to the fact that acrylics are a bit limited in their mixing capabilities (compared to oil)

I am a self taught artist that although I’ve been aware of the color wheel I need to start using it. I wanted to create a color wheel for my own reference and so I can also better know how to make my colors. Anyway, point is this is super helpful. I screwed up my first attempt so I’m going to start over because I ran out of space and had to switch colors so my wheel got funky. I have some Blick but more of thenAmsterdam so I’m going to start over with that brand. Subbed btw Thanks again

Yes! Keep trying! Every time I make a painting it is better than the one before it, soon you will be a master :D. You will find that different paint brands mix together to create entirely new combinations of colors :)

The ultramarine blue mixed with red would have gotten you a more vibrant purple when mixed. It's because the first blue you used would have had a little green in it (more teal as you say). Which when mixed with red cancels out the colour getting a muddy purple. Same with your yellow. If you mixed your red, with the cadmium medium yellow, you would have gotten a much more vibrant orange that you wanted. The bright yellow you started with was the perfect yellow to mix with the teal blue you started with to get the vibrant green. Your orange and purple were muddy because of the blue and yellow you started with.

Basically, when you mix two complementary colors or two tertiary colors, you get a brown/gray depending on what colors you mixed. ( Either warm or cool brown/gray). Adding white to any color makes tints. Adding black to any color makes shades. Different brands can produce more or less saturation, in addition to slightly skewed, color.

4:50 If you add white to the paint to make it opaque, it also dilutes the color though?

Indeed it does! You can add a second layer without white to make it more vibrant, or even better a third layer!

I suppose you would also get neutral colors by mixing the tertiary colors similar to your mixing black with the tertiary color but with a hint of the tertiary color?

It’s good that you are working with acrylic now and not oil. So many painters have taken on mental illness and or cancer from being exposed to so many toxins.

If you used a split primary you would get a better purple and orange.
