- The technique of connection in partnered swing dancing may look mysterious but here's a way to see what's going on.

My last video was about axes, so I feel I ought to get away with uploading another dance video. This one doesn't give you any moves as such, but instead attempts to explain how dancers connect with each other on the floor so that they become able to lead and follow complicated but improvised moves. If your connection is good, you can get away with (almost) anything.
If you have a short length of stout metal chain, you can use it to connect you, as I used the belt in this video, and then try dancing as a couple with the aim of keeping the chain taut so that you never hear it rattle.
The Lindy hop is a 1930s swing dance, often called the 'jitterbug'.
This video was shot with the help of Laura Halttunen of The Jazz Factory, Helsinki's primary dance studio for the swing dances.

I built a sound-baffle around the camera, which blocked out most of the echo from the large room, but blocking it all out was impossible.

Lindybeige... the only channel where you can learn about military history, medieval warfare and a sudden lesson in dance is not at all surprising.
It's called LINDYbeige for a reason
Exactly why I love it.
what is the beige part of his name for ?
He wears a lot of beige.
oh ok thanks
Instructions unclear, shot a Frenchman with my Bren gun
dat ist exactly vat wast suppose two hapen
A spandau would be a fantastic motivation to start dancing!
Was the Frenchmen properly penetrated?
Throwing a nuclear pommel at two guys who are discussing whether the spandau is the better weapon or the brengun would also help.
The spandau is too energetic of a dance. The tempo is too up beat. Much more of an expert's routine.
What I love about the Lindybeige channel is that he puts whatever the fuck he wants on it, without sticking to a certain theme all time time.
Lindy, you are the very definition of a gentleman and a scholar.
and a player
+clazy8 Playa* all gangsta like ;)
he should have my best steed, windjammer
I wish we had clones of Lloyd so they could replace all of my teachers in school.
This channel is such a gem.
I know nothing about dance and Lindybeige had me interested in the whole video, the man should teach for a living.
I have absolutely no interest in dancing, but somehow, some weird way, when Lindybeige makes a video of it, it still captivates me. Smarter every time.
Oh and kudos to his partner as well!
I’m watching this for the first time, and I had the exact same thought
Let me get this straight. Have some tension, make her feel the tension, push and pull gently, go up and down with her, and not too tight. That makes a good couple.
Got it.
You're so naughty!
As long as she's not French.
lol
this is a nerd channel, no nice girls are supposed to be in it, that makes audience nervous and overexcited!
is there a risk of someone fainting for such reasons? :D
Lubos Reho so much blood was nose-spilled since the video was uploaded man
lol, no mazdaplz
Were those pants made out of mild steel or hardened steel? And do they stop an arrow shot by an 140 pound warbow with a bodkin point made out of hardened steel?
And does it look better than a Spandau?
They were made from... STUDDED LEATHER!
woeha, another old joke. Life is good.
Bodkin has no chance, but fire arrow would be 100% deadly.
No, but you can make an emergency tent for ten people out of them.
H-h-his, his hair isn't messy? WHAT IS THIS!?!???
it looks better in a natural state
I noticed it too, could the reason be that beautiful perfectly balanced woman? ;-)
what do you mean balanced
she's a good dancer.
heresy!
I want to dance in full plate armor.
Lindy must make this happen
hahaha XD
he soold allso maek eh vidya aboot why plate armour ist rubish bcasue ist has no pockits
we're knights of the round table
we dance when we're able
we do routines and chorous scenes
with footwork impeccable
We Dine well here in camelot, we eat ham and jam and spam a lot!!!!!!
I tried to tell the driver of my cromwell tank where to go using this method. He proceeded to jump over a river the absolute madman. 2/10 would not use again.
Lindy I think it might be time for a lavalier mic :) still enjoying the content but it's impossible not to notice the horrible audio. They're cheap, they're great, and scientists say they even make "Spandau" sound more convincing.
Yes, I didn't know that I was going to be there and get a chance to record this. I built a hide out of duvets and blankets, and a fluffy coat around the mic, and this cut down most of the echo of the room. I'll get a personal mic of some sort one day.
I would like to personally thank you for taking the time to show us mere mortals how to dance. With such a beautiful woman in front of you I know it couldn't have been easy to not be tempted to just bugger the video and dance away!
An absolute treat, this. This is the style from the 30's and 40's right? I've always appreciated the style, I've never really know what it is.
Talented and beautiful! -- and she was ok too. ;-) lol Thumbs up to her for being an excellent choice of partner for the demo. Very graceful and she really seemed to be having a good time.
I like to imagine someone who hasn't seen Lindybeige before look through this comment section and be confused with why a video about dancing has so many comments about weaponry.
Did I just watch a dancing instruction video? You, Mr Beige, are a wizard.
Goodness lindy, you can dance, sew your own ties, and still have quite extensive knowledge about killing people. All this on top of being a brit makes me think you should be 007 in his next movie... Unless you're already a secret agent in real life!
I'm planning to cut my testicles off once I become a legal adult. Surgically, of course. I'm not a fucking barbarian.
I really didn't need to know that. Also, don't. You may need those things.
I should wish I could dance - in any fashion - let alone with that sort of confidence, and poise. Lloyd, you shame me. And, rightly so.
As if we needed more proof that history buffs get all the beautiful women
I do not expect dancing on this channel.
And I'm SO glad it's here. YAY! More Dancing!
I've been taking HEMA classes, and I'm starting to think dance classes might help. Keeping in line with your partner's movements is just as important when you're trying to not get hit by their sword.
Some of the best martial artists also make the best dancers. It's the same theme of timing, rhythm, distance, footwork and body mechanics, just that one is for leisure and spectacle the other for violence. A lot of skills cross over between the two.
(It's also why people are entertained by fight scenes in movies unknowingly as it triggers the same parts of the brain that get pleasure from dance, choreography and emotion.)
Probably also why men who can dance well are sexy, its a sign of fighting ability to the caveman brain.
Roy Marshall
Well that is to do with sexual performance, being good in bed = good rhythmic ability. Since women are not the same as men, faster does not equal more pleasure, but rather a consistent rhythm on the right spot gives her pleasure. Women always say "like that, right there" or "harder" but rarely do you hear "speed up".
My experience here has always been right and it's why many men struggle in getting their female partners to climax because they are getting them there and then they apply their male mentality to it and think "oh I best go faster now to get her to finish" and it ruins it as the rhythm has been broken, hence the woman is always saying "I was almost there", but doesn't get there. (It's also why people say porn is completely unrealistic and fake, because it is)
So good dancer = good rhythm = he's good in bed.
Dancers and fighters use most of the same skills of movement. The biggest difference is that in fighting you are trying to deceive your opponent, whereas in dancing you want to inform them.
I do believe hitting your dance partner is generally considered bad form.
Glad to see more Lindy with Lindybeige
Such a well-rounded gentleman sharing his lessons with the world, that's lindybeige
More of these please. You're content is always so interesting!
* random joke about Spandau *
* random joke about the Katana *
* random joke about vikings *
* random ScholaGladiatoria watcher joking about context *
* random joke about ending 'em rightly *
They're so annoying! D:
should have thrown a pommel
They can be funny in the right context.
Sorry to be that guy, but where did all these Spandau/Katana/Pommel jokes suddenly come from? I missed the trick.
Wow! I never thought some one could actually make dancing interesting, brilliant Lindy! Also, you lucky so and so.
It was Mr Beige in the hall with the belt.
Wrong. 'twas in the ballroom.
It would be much more enjoyable, if you were wearing a suit of heavy plate armor. And a katana. On the back.
A katana bayonet on the end of a Spandau
He also needs a pointed axe as a secondary weapon.
+Sandro The Great it would cut right through the barrel. No good.
On his back!
nicholas cunningham ...SHIT! I forgot it was that powerful. He shouldn't use the Spandau either, that gun kills everything around it instantly, even if he's not actually firing it.
This, weirdly, explains very well the basic principles of the hammer throw technique. Far better than "sit down and relax upon the torque" I like to use when teaching kids at my athletics club. Right, from now on, I'll use that way of reasoning, I'll just add the "do this wrong and you'll break your own jaw" bit.
watching a combed Lloyd dancing has to be one of the most astonishing things of his channel.
but that studded leather trousers tho.
I am getting into partner dancing, including the Lindy hop. Then RUclips suggests Lindybeige! The last time our paths crossed was a presentation about the Chetniks and Partisans in Yugoslavia in WW2. But doing the Lindyhop makes perfect sense though: WW2 - Lindyhop. Same period. Same eclectic interest. I love it. If Lindybeige can dance then I will get good at it too.
No ring on that. She wants to lay siege to the fortress of your clothing.
I think she'd rather storm that castle. Or build a ramp.
XD
She's a beauty.
stop
again, thanks for keeping up with the lindy hop videos, when i subscribed however many years ago it was (5? no couldn't be, jeez) it was because you had both the dancing and the swords.
teh normins ver net french
What the fuck is this weird ass novelty account? ;3
what the hell is this i thought the normans were a french viking hybrid thingy that dosint run on gass
+Daniel A Wote du yo min? Dissis jast howi spake.
You're very good at presenting a topic.
This is one piece of dancing I often see glossed over. Usually it's all about the steps. The actual connection between the dancers is mostly not even mentioned, and steps are shown mostly on an individual basis. The skill to lead, and the skill to follow is really more important than how exactly you're placing your feet, especially when there are so many different steps and moves you can take in a dance like this.
What a beautiful young dance partner you have found...oh yes and an informative video as well, really!
Nicolas is an absolute legend.
We have witnessed greatness
That feel when your name is Nicholas and so is Lindy. Best day ever.
You never fail to secure my admiration, you brilliant boy.
So, basically, now women and man dragging each other around instead of man pushing the women around?
....wait, where did this sexism come from?
TANGO! COME OVER HERE INSTANTLY!
Somebody's gonna get ended rightly tonight amiright chaps? Har har
nice....
I was told a great way to practice the extension is by using a fridge door. lean back as far as you can go, but don't let the door open. If you can dance in that stretch, then you will get the "right" amount of extension.
is that outro true? That sounds awesome!
Absolutely true. I even have a supply of blindfolds taken from long-haul flights for training in this technique.
I'd love to see a demonstration of that!
I'm with Kram on that one; I'd watch a demonstration of blindfolded dancing.
Don't know about blindfolded competitions, but I have indeed danced blindfolded (Cuban salsa) with a girl I had never met before. It's odd at first glance ;) but it's really no trouble and after a minute or so, it becomes rather effortless.
Your body I reckon, just needs time to adjust to pitch black. If there's plenty of room that you don't have to worry about bumping into someone or something, really, all the communication is in the hand connection.
Naturally, I couldn't use the 'direction of view' leading (she sees where I'm looking and gives her free hand on the spot) but, some other more common figures that require two hands, we connected without too much trouble as she would bring her hand to where I would expect her and vice versa. :)
What's even more amazing, you don't even need the physical connection, a
good follower can just observe your motion (providing you give clear
directions) and dance the steps/figures you had in mind.
That none-change of clothes between videos! #SameDayFilming
I'm french, please don't shoot me.
Just duck and shoot back, because the British don't do that and in a prolonged firefight you'll get the upper hand easily.
"Penetrating frenchmen"-Lindybiege
if you know what i mean *winks*
As long as you don't taunt us first.
MalloonTarka Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!
Lindy, me and some friends where discussing about all things medieval and one friend stated that a peasant fighting for a country wasn't allowed to kill an apposing army's knights and was only allowed to capture them, we did discuss the reasons and that but i would love to hear your insight on this. (repost, sorry)
Really consider how that sounds for one moment. If that was true, then one knight would have been able to mow down waves of peasents with no repercussions.
Knights probably did kill peasants, it's a knights word over a peasants and after all they're enemies. All i was says is that I would like to hear Lindy's thoughts on this matter.
I don't know anything about dancing... well, I now know a very small amount about dancing but I enjoyed this. More dancing videos to come? Diversification is the condiment of vitality, and all that.
I wasn't sure about the dancing... But I think.... I LIKE IT!
Made at the Jazz Factory in HELSINKI?! SUOMI MAINITTU!
Suomi, Suomi
Oon jo torilla. Missä muut lindy hoppaajat?
i like the complete randomness of this channel... there are rants, guns, politics then a lot of history and even some dancing ^^
dammit Lloyd, now on upcoming episodes of dancing with the stars, I'll know more than my wife what to look for in a good lindy hop. she hates getting shown up, especially when I know more about dance than she does
Please more dancing videos, they are fantastic
LOL those trousers are pure gold!
Your picture made me swat my phone
willaim barrett XD
what a wonderfull video again! I hardly ever dance but still this was interesesting! hope it gets a lot of views :)
This generation needs to be taught how to lead, good call on this video
This man makes everything seem interesting
My favourite dance is the prestigious Spandau dance!
I do swing. It's so much fun. I really want to try it out in other countries though.
I was actually curious about this a couple days ago, neat that you would post a video about it :)
There is so much manliness coming from your channel, that I feel inferior and compelled to subscribe. Love your content mate! =D
For some reason I always envision Lindy as the teacher in that Monty Python skit where the boys learn about sex. "Right, SO....put your arm sort of 'round her waist, like this, aaand.... begin to thrust in a firm upwards motion. It cracks me up.
"It's exhausting and makes things less sensitive." Sounds like Friday nights in my early twenties.
Ah, that was a very good explanation of connection! I may forward this video to my dancing folks. I do Hungarian dance and connection is very intense in that as well.
PS.I have been binge watching your videos, I think I might be your newest #1 fan :D
Suggestion on the sound - Use a wireless microphone clipped to your vest. Yes, you'll need to wear the transmitter, probably on your belt, but you'll get used to it.
Alternatively, you could cover the walls with medieval tapestries...
That IS a lovely tie!
What a dapper man.
no guns no sword no helmet ahhhhh
good video anyway
There is lots more to it. You can send all kinds of signals with your shoulders, eyes, fingers, thumb press on back of hand....lots and lots. BTW the lady is very good and I'd have liked to see her dance the whole routine.
Brilliant! I find it very frustrating to dance with women who won't effect resistance to my frame in smooth and rhythm dances. I'm going to suggest the belt exercise to my instructor. headed to my first Lindy Hop lesson tomorrow. wish me luck.
Professional ballet dancer saying:
"Approved"
I never dreamed it would be the same guy.....this is the Lindy in Lindybeige? Well I'll be dammed!
This makes me happy, i don't know why.
You can't push someone with a floppy belt, but you can flog the crap out of them.
Haha, this is impressive and educational. Great video.
This was a really neat video talking about the tension and supporting each other. As I don't quite know much more about early 20th century dance I don't have much to add. However, have you ever thought of doing a video on Heraldry? There's quite a big industry here in America about companies selling merchandise on "family" coats of arms, and it frustrates me to no end to see this ancestral plagiarism.
Hi Lindy, like the videos but the audio of this video was very low quality. A re recording of the audio would be nice, but deffinitly set your mic closer to you in the next wide shot video :)
You didn't hear the sound WITHOUT the house of blankets I built around the camera.
Oh god, I can only imagine :' )
You're quite the dapper looking fellow, Lindy
Perfectly explained!
so of topic from other videos... still loved it
that lady's posture is just gorgeous
If you had a japanese katana none of this would have ever happened
spandau > katana
But is a bren > katana?
I reckon Lindy actually has huge muscular legs, which explains the need for the baggy trousers :)
Next week he'll start uploading his leg routines.
why isnt he talking about axes!?!?!?
Suomi mainittu jne.
Tuon torille muutaman risun.
en oo tulos toril.
Haista vittu!!
Onko sulla ase?
perkele
yeah this is neat putting the lindy in the beige lol and she is very pretty
Lindy is such a character
like it how lloyd has got his hair slicked back to look nice and smart lol. no beige shirt though?
He says he doesn't wear beige shirts when dancing because they show sweat spots rather easily.
Beige vest though
this is really helpful for me thanks!
What a legend.
love it! when are u doing a cooking video? :)
I have genuinely considered doing some! People might not be impressed by the state of my kitchen, though. Perhaps I could call it 'rustic'.
Would like to see more lindy hop stuff I find it quite interesting when told from the gentleman that like to stuff the French.
Awesome ! Just started lessons; this is soo helpful !
I'm gonna need about 10 minutes of you two just dancing in a future video.
The exact same principle is used in salsa and cumbia. I suppose this applies to most forms of dancing as a couple.
